Florida Gold Coast’s Aiden Kohanyi Wins Twice; Lance Lesage SOFLO’s Top Finisher On Day Four Of Southern Zones

August 4, 2017—Aiden Kohanyi came up big for the Florida Gold Coast Zone team winning two events Friday night at the Southern Zones Age Group LCM Championships at Tupelo (Miss.) Aquatic Center.

Kohanyi, 12, won the 11-12 100-meter breaststroke in a best time 1:10.01. Kohanyi swam back-to-back best times lowering his previous best of 1:12.06, first in prelims in 1:11.77 and again in finals.

Kohanyi was also a member of FGC’s winning 11-12 200-meter medley relay in 2:00.22 with teammates Hudson Bishop, Kaii Winkler and Agustin Rodriguez.

FGC teammate Kyle Korvick, 14, was second in the 13-14 400-meter freestyle in 4:15.63.

SOFLO’s Lance Lesage led off FGC’s fifth place 13-14 200-meter medley relay in 1:55.19 with teammates Victor Valdes, Jack D’Avi and Kyle Korvick.

SOFLO’s Kayla Cunningham and Paige Lane were members of the sixth place 13-14 200-meter medley relay in 2:04.44 with Michaela Avedisian and Gabrianna Banks.

USA Swimming’s Zone Championships feature top regional swimmers at the age group level who qualify. There are four zones: southern, western, central and eastern.

The Shockwave Aquatics Swim Club is hosting the meet, which is being webcast from the state-of-the-art Tupelo Aquatic Center.

The five-day meet concludes on Saturday with prelims and finals.

SOFLO’s Ricardo Roche, Jessica Rodriguez Top Finishers On Day Two Of Futures Championships

August 4, 2017—Jessica Rodriguez and Ricardo Roche of South Florida Aquatic Club were the team’s top finishers against a tough field Friday in the USA Swimming Futures Championships at Centennial Sportsplex Tracy Caulkins Competition Pool in Nashville, Tenn.

Rodriguez, 18, University of Florida-bound, was 13th in the 100-meter breaststroke in 1:15.88. In morning prelims, she had the 16th fastest time in 1:16.11. She was also a member of SOFLO’s 20th place 400-meter freestyle relay along with Kelley Heron, Jennifer Rodriguez and Melissa Marinheiro.

Rodriguez had the 200-meter breaststroke and 100-meter freestyle left to swim.

Ricardo Roche, 17, swam back-to-back times in the 400-meter individual medley. He bettered his previous best time of 4:39.54 in morning prelims in 4:38.26 and bettered the time in finals in 4:36.48 to finish 11th for a time drop of 3.06.

Roche has the 400- and 800-meter freestyles and 200-meter backstroke left to swim.

Three other SOFLO swimmers posted time drops:

Juan Serna, 200-meter freestyle, 2:01.66, 0.24 drop.

Samuel Quintero, 100-meter breaststroke, 1:09.53, 0.10 drop.

Luke Lezotte, 100-meter butterfly, 1:00.39, 0.23 drop.

SOFLO’s boys’ 400-meter freestyle relay of Lezotte, Serna, Rafael Rodriguez and Kevin Porto was 11th in 3:38.66.

SOFLO is 12th in the combined team standings with 63 points. SwimMAC leads with 270. SOFLO boys are tied for sixth with East Coast Aquatic Club with 55 points.

The championships are open to swimmers who are USA Swimming members and have achieved the time standards in one or more events. The summer meet provides swimmers with a new stepping stone between Sectionals and Junior Nationals. Some call the Futures meet as a “junior” Junior Nationals.

It is one of four Futures meets held across the country. The other three are in Santa Clara, Calif., Lewisville, Tex. and Geneva, Ohio.

Several Florida teams are among 45 teams competing including Gator Swim Club, Pine Crest Swimming, Tampa Bay Aquatics, Highlander, Area Tallahassee, AquaKids Sharks, East Coast Aquatics and Blue Wave Swimming.
