August 30, 2017—In a much-anticipated early season boys’ showdown, Fort Lauderdale edged Pompano Beach, 156-144, Wednesday at the Flying L’s pool.

The boys were led by double winner Kevin De Grijze, a sophomore, in the 100-yard butterfly (52.97) and 100-yard breaststroke (1:02.54) and one-two finish by divers Kylian Lorient, a junior, (190.75) and Swan Martinetti, a sophomore, (152.95).

The Flying L’s won one relay and four individual events. Pompano Beach, led by Mattheus and Rafael Santos, won two relays and five individual events, but had no divers.

Pompano Beach swept the top three spots in the 100-yard freestyle with freshman Rafael Santos, junior Dante Poe and sophomore Ethan Arias.

The Flying L’s girls team had a little more breathing room with its 198-103 victory over Pompano Beach.

Senior Giulia Guerre Montes was a double winner in the 500-yard freestyle in 5:24.98 and 100-yard backstroke in 1:04.76.

Senior Racine Ross was also a double winner for Fort Lauderdale in the 200-yard individual medley in 2:23.18 and 100-yard butterfly in 1:01.49.

The Flying L’s swept all three relays and won eight individual events. Senior sprinter Gabrielle Cissone was the only Pompano Beach winner in the 50-yard freestyle in 27.48 just out-touching Fort Lauderdale’s Diana Freshour in 27.51.

“This was a tough meet,” Fort Lauderdale second-year coach Carrie Becker said. “We knew it would come down to the wire and that we would be tested. It took everyone together as a team to get the win. Pompano had a lot of depth and a lot of fast swimmers but so do we.”

The Flying L’s are now 2-0 with Cardinal Gibbons and Northeast next up.
