SOFLO’s Fab Five Head To Speedo Winter Junior East Championships That Begin Wednesday

KNOXVILLE, Tenn., December 5, 2017—South Florida Aquatic Club will have one of its largest contingents at this week’s Speedo Winter Junior East Championships at University of Tennessee’s Allan Jones Aquatic Center.

The four-day meet begins Wednesday with the men’s and women’s 200 medley and 800 freestyle relays. SOFLO swimmers begin competing on Thursday.

SOFLO’s contingent includes Kathleen Golding, Kelley Heron, Luke Lezotte, Ricardo Roche and Rafael Rodriguez.

Golding is qualified in five events. She will compete in the 200- and 400-yard individual medleys and 50-, 100- and 200-yard freestyles.

Heron will compete in the 200-yard individual medley and 100- and 200-yard backstroke.

Lezotte qualified in the 50-yard freestyle.

Roche will swim five events, 500-yard freestyle, 200- and 400-yard individual medleys, 1,650-yard freestyle and 200-yard backstroke.

Rodriguez will swim the 500-yard freestyle, 400-yard individual medley and 1,650-yard freestyle.

The East field features swimmers from SwimMAC Carolina, Gator Swim Club, Marlins of Raleigh, Carmel, Mason Manta Rays, Swim Atlanta, Dynamo, Bolles and Pine Crest.

In addition to Pine Crest and SOFLO swimmers, other Florida Gold Coast teams entered are Boca Raton Swim Team, AquaKids Sharks, Gulliver Swim Club, Metro Aquatics, North Palm Beach, St. Andrew’s Swimming, Azura Florida Aquatics and Lake Lytal Lightning.

The star-studded girls field is led by Alex Walsh who is seeded first in four events, the 100- and 200-yard backstroke, 100-yard breaststroke and 200-yard individual medley. She also qualified in the 50- and 100-yard freestyle.

Other top girls competing are Junior World medalists Emily Weiss and Ella Nelson, Morgan Tankersley and Madison Homovich.

The boys field is led by Trey Freeman, Carson Foster, Cody Bybee and Drew Kibler.

The Speedo Winter Junior West Championships are also being held Wednesday through Saturday at the University of Iowa Recreation Center in Iowa City.

Kayla Cunningham Wins On Final Day; SOFLO Finishes Sixth At GSC Holiday Classic

GAINESVILLE, December 4, 2017—South Florida Aquatic Club enjoyed one of its finest road trips in the club’s history.

Competing among a strong field that featured SwimMAC, Bolles, Sarasota YMCA and host Gator Swim Club, SOFLO finished sixth in the combined and boys team standings. The girls placed ninth.

SwimMAC, the nation’s top-ranked age group team, swept the combined, boys and girls team titles.

Kayla Cunningham, 14, won her first event of the three-day meet in the 200-yard backstroke in a best time 2:03.70, shaving 3.76 seconds off her previous best time of 2:07.46. She finished with nine points in high point.

SOFLO boys were outstanding throughout the meet piling up points with talent, depth and relays and swimming best times.

SOFLO boys had three swimmers in the 11-12 100-yard backstroke. All three swimmers turned in best times either in prelims or finals. Alejandro Mateus was third in 1:02.35, Christian Tijero was fifth in 1:04.30 and Logan Gonzalez was seventh in 1:05.60.

SOFLO Boys Continue To Impress On Day Two Of Gator Swim Club Holiday Classic

GAINESVILLE, November 2, 2017—After two days of competition against some of the nation’s top teams, South Florida Aquatic Club boys remain in sixth place at the Gator Swim Club Holiday Classic at University of Florida’s Stephen O’Connell Center.

SOFLO is seventh in the combined team standings with 184 points, with the boys team accounting for 150 of those points.

The boys’ relays continue to do well along with the depth and talent of swimmers in individual races, many with best times.

SOFLO had three swimmers final in the boys’ 11-12 200-yard individual medley, the most of any team including SwimMAC. Alejandro Mateus was third in 2:17.56, Christian Tijero was fourth in 2:19.10 and Lucas Porven was eighth in 2:21.59 after swimming a best time in prelims in 2:20.67, shaving an impressive 8.33 off his previous best of 2:29.

SOFLO’s 11-12 200-yard freestyle relay was third in 1:45.99 with Christian Tijero, Samuel Bullen, Logan Gonzalez and Alejandro Mateus.

SOFLO’s 13-14 200-yard freestyle relay was fifth in 1:34.77 with Sebastian Lares, Nicolas Munoz, Javier Roman and Nicolas Rossi, shaving 3.18 seconds off its entry time of 1:37.95.

SOFLO’s 400-yard freestyle relay was eighth in 3:14.98 with Kevin Porto, Juan Serna, Juan Diaz and Heath Brames. Brames had an opening split of 22.33, fastest on the team.

Jonathan Lozano, third, 200-yard individual medley, 2:36.48, time drop of 5.30.

Sam Bullen, fourth, 200-yard breaststroke, 2:39.71, time drop of 5.52.

Paige Lane, seventh, 50-yard freestyle, 24.53 and seventh in the 500-yard freestle in a best time 5:10.10, dropping 1.53.

Alexis Christensen, eighth, 500-yard freestyle, 5:30.83, with an impressive time drop of 8.42

The three-day meet concludes Sunday with prelims and finals.

WINTER NATIONALS

SOFLO’s Marc Rojas completed his appearance at the USA Swimming Winter Nationals Saturday morning at Ohio State. Rojas was 26th in the 200-yard breaststroke in 2:03.07. Cody Miller won the event in a course record 1:49.31

Jennifer Rodriguez, Boys Relays Lead SOFLO On Day One Of GSC Holiday Classic

GAINESVILLE, December 1, 2017—South Florida Aquatic Club, competing against some of the nation’s top clubs, rose to the occasion on Day One of the Gator Swim Club Holiday Classic at University of Florida’s O’Connell Center.

SOFLO is sixth among boys’ teams with 50 points, tied for ninth among girls’ teams with 18 and tied for seventh in the combined team standings. SwimMAC leads the combined, boys and girls ahead of Bolles in all three categories.

Jennifer Rodriguez, 17, was SOFLO’s lone winner. Rodriguez won the 100-yard breaststroke in 1:06.61. She was also fourth in the 400-yard individual medley in 4:42.94 with a time drop of 3.05. She accounted for 14 of SOFLO’s points.

SOFLO boys took second, third and fourth in the medley relays.

SOFO’s 11-12 200-yard medley relay was second in 1:58.40 with Alejandro Mateus, Logan Gonzalez, Lucas Porven and Samuel Bullen.

SOFLO’s open 400-yard medley relay was third in 3:33.41 with Lance Lesage, Samuel Quintero, Juan Serna and Heath Brames.

SOFLO’s 13-14 200-yard medley relay was fourth in 1:45.35 with Sebastian Lares, Javier Roman, John Paul Handal and Nicolas Rossi.

Other top four SOFLO individual finishers:

Juan Serna, second, 100-yard butterfly, 51.54, time drop of 1.73.

Alejandro Mateus, second, 200-yard butterfly 2:17.66 time drop of 5.63

Lucas Porven, fourth, 200-yard butterfly, 2:20.67, time drop of 8.38

Molly Golding, fourth, 100-yard breaststroke, 1:06.93, time drop of 0.51 and had an impressive time drop of 5.26 in the 400-yard individual medley prelims in 4:37.07.

Jonathan Lozano, fourth, 200-yard freestyle 2:14.7, time drop of 5.10.
The three-day meet continues Saturday with prelims and finals.

ROJAS SWIMS FIRST EVENT

SOFLO’s Marc Rojas competed in the 100-yard breaststroke Friday at the USA Swimming Winter National Championships in Columbus, Ohio. He finished 32nd in prelims in 56.15. Nic Fink of Athens Bulldogs won in a meet and pool record 50.80. Rojas swims the 200-yard breaststroke on Saturday.

SOFLO Swimmers Get Busy Friday At GSC Holiday Classic And Winter Nationals

GAINESVILLE, November 30, 2017–South Florida Aquatic Club will get in some good racing on its big road trip of the fall when the Gator Swim Club Holiday Classic begins Friday at Stephen O’Connell Center Natatorium.

The event features 42 teams and 1,100 swimmers. There are “A” cuts for most age groups and sectional cuts for seniors (17-and-up).

SOFO is sending 46 swimmers (24 boys, 22 girls) to the three-day meet to compete in 248 individual events and 12 relays in prelims and finals.

In addition to SOFLO and host Gator Swim Club, other teams competing are AquaKids Sharks, Area Tallahassee Aquatics, Beaches Aquatic Club, Berkeley Barracudas, Bolles, Central Brevard, Central Florida, Clearwater, Daytona Beach, Gulf Coast, Gulliver, Hilltoppers, Lakeland Area Swimming, Laker Swim, Loggerhead, Makos Aquatics, Mandarin, Martin County, Metro Aquatics, Miami Shores, PAQ, Pipeline, Piranhas YMCA, Rocoa of Brevard, St. Andrew’s, St. Augustine, St. Edwards, St. Petersburg, Sarasota YMCA, Seminole Aquatics, Storm, Swim Florida, Swim Fort Lauderdale, Swim Jax, SwimMAC, Tampa Bay Aquatics, Treasure Coast Aquatics, Treasure Coast Swimming, West Florida and YMCA of Florida.

WINTER NATIONALS

South Florida Aquatic Club will be represented at the USA Swimming Winter National Championships at Ohio State’s Bill and Mae McCorkle Aquatic Pavilion.

Marc Rojas will swim the 100 breaststroke (1:03.61) on Friday and 200 breaststroke (2:20.86) on Saturday. SOFLO coach Chris Anderson will coach Rojas and then fly to Gainesville for the GSC Holiday Classic.

SOFLO teammate Alia Atkinson, entered in the 100 butterfly, 100 breaststroke and 100 freestyle, dropped out of the meet.
