Metro Aquatic Club Of Miami Knocks Off Defending Champion SOFLO In FGC Senior Championships; SOFLO’s Golding, Rodriguez Win High Point

By Sharon Robb

PEMBROKE PINES, March 26, 2018—SOFLO swimmers Kathleen Golding and Rafael Rodriguez, team leaders throughout the Florida Gold Coast Senior Championships, finished as high point award winners Sunday at Academic Village Pool.

The pair played a key role in SOFLO’s runner-up finish in the combined and boys team standings and third place in the girls team standings.

Golding accumulated 209 points, the second most of any girl swimmer. Chade Nersicio of East Coast Aquatic Club was top high point winner with 210 points.

Rodriguez totaled 204 points, the most of any boy swimmer in both age groups.

Defending champion SOFLO fell 33.50 points shy defending its title in the combined and boys team standings. SOFLO was trying to make history by winning both seniors and JO titles in the same short course season for the sixth time in the team’s 18-year history.

“Our kids swam well, we just came up short,” SOFLO head coach Chris Anderson said. “We had a lot of good individual swims.”

Metro Aquatic Club of Miami knocked off the meet host, winning the combined team title with 2,620.50. SOFLO was second with 2,587. MAC won the boys team title with 1,944 ahead of SOFLO with 1,407.

Gulliver Swim Team won the girls team title with 1,729.50. East Coast Aquatic Club was second with 1,612 and SOFLO was third with 1,180. Defending champion Pine Crest was fourth with 725.50.

It was the first time MAC won the combined team title in more than 20 years, in 1997. Several members of the team were off Miami Belen’s fifth place state 3A team.

“It’s been a long time,” said MAC and Miami Belen veteran coach Kirk Peppas. “We won it the first couple of years when it was a young competition. The Gold Coast has grown so much in seniors and is very competitive.”

MAC clinched the title in the final boys’ event, placing one-two in the 400-yard medley relay. Nine of the swimmers were coming off last weekend’s National Club Swimming Association Meet (NCSA) at Orlando YMCA.

“The kids never thought we had a shot until they looked at the heat sheets,” Peppas said. “The leadership kicked in, they got pumped up and pulled it off. I am happy for the kids. It was a really good group effort. I didn’t know they would do this. It all came down to the relays. It was fun. It’s a good way to end the meet.

“Aitor did a good job of making sure everyone did their part. Everybody stepped up, everyone was together and that’s what makes a team, a team. They all pushed each other.”

Metro Aquatic Club of Miami was led by top swimmers Nestor Montero, 16, Andres Wong, 15, Alejandro Timp, 16, Aaron Rodriguez, 16, Brandon Vives, 18, team leader Aitor Fungairino, 17, and Adrian Aguilar, 17, Stephanie Suarez, 16, and Anelis Roque, 14.

Visiting coaches and parents were impressed by the meet’s atmosphere and organization including Peppas.

“People were into it, there was more of a fun, relaxed atmosphere with everybody, it wasn’t just another championship meet,” Peppas said. “Everyone was entertained. The parents were involved, the music was good, everyone was pumped up. It was a good scenario. Chris did a good job of putting on a good meet.”

Among SOFLO swimmer Sunday highlights:

Golding swam the second fastest time in the pool ever in the 200-yard individual medley in a best time 1:58.58. Golding won the 50-yard butterfly in 24.58, another best time and 50-yard freestyle in 23.04.

Golding was also a member of the winning 400-yard medley relay in 3:49.42 and second-place 200-yard medley relay in 1:46.76 with teammates Kelley Heron, Jennifer Rodriguez and Paige Lane.

Heron was third in the 200 IM in 2:06.57.

Rodriguez closed out an outstanding meet. He won the 1,650-yard freestyle in 15:51.48. Teammate Ricardo Roche was second in the event in 16:04.52 and Leonardo Mateus was third in 16:22.32.

Rodriguez was also second in the 50-yard freestyle in a best time 21.82.

Lance Lesage was third in the 100-yard backstroke in 52.81.

SOFLO took a pair of thirds in both the 200- and 400-yard medley relays.

The morning session on Sunday was held in memory of TS Aquatics swimmer Nicholas Dworet and 16 other victims killed in the Marjory Stoneman Douglas mass shooting. Seventeen balloons were tied to the lane lines during prelims.

Parents, swimmers and spectators were also treated each day to the National Anthem in unique presentations including a beautiful violin rendition by talented SOFLO swimmer Joseph Lee and well-choreographed lane swim out by SOFLO swimmers with TYR patriotic kickboards, U.S. flag and wearing USA flag swim caps during the anthem.

SOFLO Has Slim Lead Headed Into Final Day Of FGC Senior Championships; Golding, Rodriguez Top Finishers On Day Two

By Sharon Robb

PEMBROKE PINES, March 24, 2018—The battle for the combined team title is going down to the wire at the Florida Gold Coast Senior Championships.

Defending champion and meet host South Florida Aquatic Club leads Metro Aquatics by 8.5 points going into the third and final day of competition at Academic Village Pool.

SOFLO, led by Kathleen Golding and Rafael Rodriguez for the second consecutive day, leads by only 8.5 points. SOFLO has 1,654 points and Metro Aquatics is second with 1,646. East Coast Aquatic Club is third with 1,554.

It is expected to be one of the closest finishes in meet history. SOFLO is attempting to win both Seniors and Junior Olympic titles in the same short course season for the sixth time in the team’s 18-year history.

“The kids swam really well,” said SOFLO head coach Chris Anderson after Saturday’s finals. “We are shaving off a lot of best times in the groups. The Gold Group did a really nice job and senior training group is making consos and finals and scoring points. Sunday should be one of our stronger days with the medley relays.

“The team is really coming together,” Anderson said. “They are doing a good job closing out races and when necessary winning some races. Teams are are definitely gunning for us.

“We need to come together as a team. I told them they have to have a little bit more grit and get a little tougher. They need to get comfortable feeling slightly uncomfortable going fast. It’s going to be a matter of pride. I think it will come down to the men’s and women’s B relays.”

Golding won the 100-yard butterfly in a best time 53.90 and was third in the 50-yard backstroke in a best time 26.23. Golding has 137 points.

Golding was also a member of SOFLO’s third place 800-yard freestyle relay that finished in 7:45.61. Other relay members were Paige Lane, Kelley Heron and Katrina Del Vecchio.

Lane was also third in the 200-yard freestyle in a best time 1:53.38 and fourth in the 100-yard butterfly in 58.56.

Rodriguez won the 400-yard individual medley in a best time 4:01.32 and was second in the 200-yard freestyle in a best time in 1:42.25. Leonardo Mateus was third in the 400 IM in a best time 4:13.43.

Rodriguez was also a member of SOFLO’s runner-up 800-yard freestyle relay that finished in 7:04.39. Other relay members were Heath Brames, Ricardo Roche and CJ Kopecki.

SOFLO Captures Ninth Florida Gold Coast Short Course 14&Under Junior Olympics Title

By Sharon Robb

CORAL SPRINGS, March 18, 2018—South Florida Aquatic Club found a way to win—again.

The early leaders of the Florida Gold Coast 14&Under Short Course Junior Olympics clinched the combined team title on the third and final day at the Michael Lohberg Pool of Champions at Coral Springs Aquatic Complex.

With less swimmers and superstars than years’ past, SOFLO won with 846 points finishing ahead of Flood Aquatics with 717.50 and Pine Crest Swimming with 708.50.

It was a record eighth consecutive and ninth overall in the club’s 18-year history.

“It’s definitely getting harder each year to win,” said SOFLO head coach Chris Anderson. “With the group that we have I can’t stress enough how our coaches maximized their strengths. Our experienced coaches took the strength of club and exploited the rest of the Gold Coast with it.”

Every point mattered for SOFLO. In past years, depth was always the key but this year’s meet was a little different.

“Our strengths was really taking advantage of athletes we have in the water,” Anderson said. “We found a way to basically win in four different ways–depth, the middle distance quality, depth of relays and specifying different strokes.

“Our girls were swimming out of their minds in individual races. They may not have been able to swim six races but they could do three very strong ones and that’s what we had to do.

“We’re not as strong as we used to be, but we had a good handle on it. We looked at where they were at in September, adjusted in December, coached them better and they were ready to go.

“We are going to continue to find ways to win the big championships,” Anderson said. “It is a culture of winning. The coaches feel it and know it as well.”

Last weekend SOFLO won its first Southern Zone South Sectional Championships with depth and fed off that momentum at JOs. Thirty-two of the sectional swimmers all scored and competed on multiple JO teams.

“Winning sectionals was something we had never done in the past and we did it with depth,” Anderson said.

“This week if you looked at us on paper there was no way we would be in the top two,” Anderson said. “We were suppose to get third place. After the first day of the meet we found a way to win. Our younger swimmers, the 10-and-unders, did a great job. It worked out well.”

SOFLO swimmers that competed in their final JO short course appearance before aging up all played a vital role in the team victory. They were Sarah Acevedo, Brennan Binder, Juan Colmenares, Kayla Cunningham, Mark Andre De Gracia, Molly Golding, Yannai Michael, Jena Legaspi, Anthony Robaina, Javier Roman, Mallory Schleicher and Christian Vasquez.

SOFLO’s 11-12 boys scored 254 points; 13-14 girls 178 points; 13-14 boys 138 points; 11-12 girls scored 114; 10-and-under girls scored 83; and 10-and-under boys score 79. The majority of SOFLO swimmers had at least one best time.

Among SOFLO’s top three finishers were:

Giada Porven, second, 200-yard individual medley, 2:35.70, time drop.

Jonathan Lozano, second, 200-yard individual medley, 2:31.52, time drop.

Mallory Schleicher, third, 1,650-yard freestyle, 17:33.42.

Valerie Vank, third, 50-yard breaststroke, 31.77.

Alejandro Mateus, third, 200-yard individual medley, 2:12.92, time drop; third, 1,650-yard freestyle, 18:26.33, time drop.

Lucas Porven, third, 200-yard butterfly, 2:16.91, time drop.

SOFLO’s A 200-yard freestyle relay was third in 1:45.30 with Diego Nazario-Vazquez, Christian Tijero, Aldo Zepeda and Alejandro Mateus.

“The most satisfying win is always the first,” Anderson said. “As far as upping the quality and reputation of being a very competitive team, this is definitely one of the most satisfying ones. Coaching up the kids and watching the kids and coaches perform at the championship level was very satisfying.”

More than 600 swimmers and 36 teams competed. The top six finishers in each JO event qualify for the Florida Gold Coast All-Star team.

Among FGC teams were Pine Crest, Azura, East Coast, Metro Aquatics, North Palm Beach, Miami Swimming, Wahoos of Wellington, Gulliver and AquaKids Sharks.
