PLANTATION, March 9, 2018–South Florida Aquatic Club leads the combined team standings after Day Two of the Speedo Championship Series Southern Zone South Sectional Championships Friday at Plantation Aquatic Complex.
In the team competition, SOFLO leads the combined team totals with 895 points ahead of Azura Florida Aquatic with 862 and Gator Swim Club with 837.5.
Azura leads the men’s team standings with 563 and SOFLO is third with 410 points. East Coast Aquatic Club lead the women’s team standings with 420 and SOFLO is third with 343.
SOFLO’s top individual finishers were Kathleen Golding and Rafael Rodriguez.
Golding 17, was second in the 100-meter butterfly in 1:01.85 behind Gator Swim Club’s Talia Bates in 1:01.10. Both will be teammates at University of Florida. Golding was also third in the 400-meter individual medley in 4:53.79.
Golding has 55 points in the high point awards standings.
Rodriguez, 16, was second in the 400-meter individual medley in 4:37.85 nine seconds behind University of Florida-bound Miguel Cancel in 4:31.95. Rodriguez was also 13th in the 200-meter freestyle in a best time 1:58.19.
South Florida Aquatic Club’s men’s 800-meter freestyle relay was second in 8:11.95 with Rafael Rodriguez, Ricardo Roche, Heath Brames and Lance Lesage.
SOFLO women were fifth in the 200-meter medley relay, sixth in the 200-meter freestyle relay and ninth in the 800-meter freestyle relay. The mixed 200-meter medley relay was seventh.
Other notable SOFLO swims were:
Paige Lane, 15, swam a best time 2:10.74 in the 200-meter freestyle, shaving 1.21 off her previous best of 2:11.95.
Molly Golding, 14, was fifth in the 100-meter breaststroke in a best time 1:15.23, an 0.77 time drop. She was 14th in the 400-meter individual medley in 5:17.75, just off her best time of 5:17.37.
Marc Rojas, 24, was sixth in the 100-meter breaststroke in 1:08.15. Florida State’s Julio Horrego won in 1:03.69.
Kelley Heron, 18, was seventh in the 50-meter backstroke in 31.48.
Lance Lesage, 15, was ninth in the 50-meter backstroke in 29.39.
Twelve-time Olympic medalist Ryan Lochte of Gator Swim Club won two events in the 200-meter freestyle in 1:50.56 and 100-meter butterfly in 53.77. Teammate Isabel Ivey won the 200-meter freestyle in 1:59.74.
The four-day meet continues on Friday with prelims at 9 a.m. and finals at 5 p.m.
A field of more than 600 swimmers from 60 teams and 20 unattached teams are competing over four days in one of four designated USA Swimming zones. The others are Eastern, Central and Western Zone Sectionals. The meet attracts some of the top swimming talent from across the United States and internationally.
Among Florida Gold Coast teams entered are Azura Florida Aquatic, AquaKids Sharks, East Coast Aquatic Club, Boca Raton Swim Team, Pine Crest Swimming, North Palm Beach, Martin County, Hurricane Swim Club, TS Aquatics, and host Plantation Swim Team.
Out-of-state teams include North Andover YMCA, Arizona Aquatic Club, City of Lafayette Aquatics, Elmwood Sharks, Falfins Swimming, Franco’s Fins, Peddie Aquatics and Oro Valley Swim Team.
