SOFLO Swimmers Continue Championship Season At Junior Nationals, Southern Zones, Futures Championships

PEMBROKE PINES, July 31, 2018–Several South Florida Aquatic Club swimmers are competing this week in the 2018 Speedo Junior National Championships in Irvine, Calif., Southern Zone Age Group Meet in Midland, Tex. and USA Swimming Futures Championships in Cary, N.C.

SOFLO’s Alexis Christensen, Mallory Schleicher, Valerie Vank and Christian Tijero will represent the Florida Gold Coast Age Group Zone Team in the Southern Zone Age Group Swim Meet that started Tuesday with the distance events and runs through Sunday at COM Aquatic Center, in Midland, Texas.

Kathleen Golding, 17, coming off five events at the USA Swimming Phillips 66 National Championships, will compete Wednesday in the 100-meter freestyle and 400-meter individual medley. At seniors, Golding posted three lifetime-bests and qualified for two “C” finals.

The junior nationals also got under way on Tuesday with the distance events after a day off on Monday after the senior nationals in the same pool.

The USA Swimming Futures Championships begin Wednesday and end Sunday at Triangle Aquatic Center in Cary, N.C. It is one of four Futures meets held across the country.

The championships are open to swimmers who are USA Swimming members and have achieved the time standards in one or more events. The summer meet provides swimmers with a new stepping stone between Sectionals and Junior Nationals. Some call the Futures meet a “junior” Junior Nationals.

SOFLO has qualified eight swimmers in the individual events and will have an additional three entered in relays including four-time Olympian Alia Atkinson.

The individual qualifiers are Gaby Banks, three events; Molly Golding, three events; Kelley Heron, three events; Paige Lane, three events; Lance Lesage, three events; Jessica Rodriguez, three events; Rafael Rodriguez, five events; and Juan Serna, three events.

According to the early entries, the 800-meter freestyle relay, which is seeded first, features Kathleen Golding, Kelley Heron, Melissa Marinheiro and Alia Atkinson. The 400-meter freestyle relay, seeded 13th, is Kathleen Golding, Kelley Heron, Jessica Rodriguez and Melissa Marinheiro. The 400-meter medley relay, seeded 23rd, is Kelley Heron, Jessica Rodriguez, Kathleen Golding and Paige Lane.

Several Florida teams are competing including Gator Swim Club, Tampa Bay Aquatics, Highlander, Area Tallahassee, TS Aquatics, East Coast Aquatic, Pine Crest Swimming, Boca Raton Swim Team, SwimMAC and Blue Wave Swimming.

Farah Leads SOFLO On Final Day Of FGC Senior Championships; SOFLO Finishes Eighth

CORAL SPRINGS, July 29, 2018—Jonathan Farah was South Florida Aquatic Club’s top finisher on the final day of the Florida Gold Coast Senior Championships Sunday at the Michael Lohberg Pool of Champions at Coral Springs Aquatic Complex.

Farah, 20, an American Heritage alum and junior-to-be at Boston College, placed fifth in the 100-meter backstroke in a best time 1:02.05 with a 0.75 time drop and fifth in the 200-meter individual medley in 218.59. He also led off SOFLO’s 12th place 200-meter medley relay. Farah finished with 44 points in high point.

SOFLO finished eighth among combined teams with 481 points. Azura Florida Aquatics defended its title with 1,328 points. Pine Crest Swimming was second with 1,080 points.

In the girls and boys age group team divisions, SOFLO was seventh with 90.50 points in the girls 15-16; third with 171.50 points in the boys 15-16; 11th with 59 points in the boys 17-and-over and 17th with 25 points in the girls 17-and-over.

Robert Wilson, 15, was SOFLO’s only other top five finisher in the 50-meter freestyle. Wilson was fifth in the 25.06 with a time drop of 0.11. Wilson finished with 54 points.
