Cypress Bay Defends BCAA Team Titles; Kathleen Golding, Diego Machado, Juan Zapata Double Winners; Golding, Machado Break Meet Records

By Sharon Robb

PLANTATION, September 30, 2018—Defending champion Cypress Bay lived up to expectations sweeping the girls and boys team titles Saturday night at the Broward County Athletic Association Swimming and Diving Championship at Plantation Aquatic Complex.

The Lightning boys’ team, led by double winner and record breaker Diego Machado and relays, won the team title with 585 points for the third time in four years.

Machado won the 200-yard freestyle in the county’s fastest time of 1:41.81, breaking the BCAA record of 1:42.41 set by Cypress Bay alum Franco Lupoli in 2011. Machado also won the 100-yard freestyle in 46.74, also the county’s fastest this season.

In an exciting girls competition, the Lightning, led by individual winners Gaby Banks and Elle Koch and relays, won the team title with 585 points. St. Thomas Aquinas was runner-up with 557 points and Cooper City was third with 437.

Banks, a junior, won the 50-yard freestyle in the county’s fastest time of 23.97, was fourth in the 100-yard freestyle in 53.17, a member of the winning 200-yard freestyle relay with teammates Emily Lopez-Diaz, Jacqueline Lugo and Paige Lane, and second-place 400-yard freestyle relay. She finished with 43 points in high point.

In morning prelims, Cypress Bay junior Ellie Koch swam the county’s fastest time this season in the 100-yard backstroke in 1:00.37 to earn the top seed for finals. She came back in finals and bettered her time in 1:00.22 to win the event. She finished with 41 points in high point.

Cooper City senior Kathleen Golding left a lasting impression in her final BCAA Championship appearance. The University of Florida commit broke the BCAA record in the 200-yard freestyle to finish with three career BCAA records.

Golding won the 200-yard freestyle in 1:50.39, breaking the previous record of 1:52.35 set by Ileana Lucos of Cypress Bay in 2006.
