St. Thomas Aquinas Sweeps District 9-4A Team Titles; Lance Lesage Wins District Title

CORAL SPRINGS, October 29, 2018—St. Thomas Aquinas defended its girls and boys team titles at last week’s District 9-4A Swimming and Diving Championship at Coral Springs Aquatic Complex.

The Raiders young girls team won with 646.5 points ahead of Douglas with 357 points and Deerfield Beach with 218 points.

The Raiders won all three of the girls relays and won six individual events.

The Raiders swept the top three places in the girls’ 200-yard freestyle with senior Kasey Jordan winning in 2:00.24 followed by sophomore Gabriella Chambers in 2:02.82 and freshman Isabella Troccoli in 2:07.12.

The Raiders also swept the top three places in the girls 100-yard butterfly with Jordan in 55.15, sophomore Lalainie Bannister in 55.89 and Troccoli in 57.99.

The Raiders swept the top three spots in the girls 500-yard freestyle with Gabriella Chambers in 5:25.13, freshman Victoria Landron in 5:27.18 and freshman Megan Smith in 5:32.63.

Kasey Jordan and Giulianna Garcia were double winners in individual events for the Raiders.

Jordan won the 200-yard freestyle in 2:00.24 and 100-yard freestyle in 55.15.

Garcia won the 200-yard individual medley in 2:15.07 and 100-yard butterfly in 1:00.39.

The Raiders boys team won the district crown with 427 points. Douglas was second with 365 and Coral Glades was third with 335 points.

SOFLO’s Lance Lesage won the 100-yard backstroke in 54.22 and was second in the 100-yard freestyle in 49.52. He was also a member of the Raiders’ two winning 200-yard medley and 400-yard freestyle relays.

Juan Zapata was a double winner for the Raiders boys in the 200-yard individual medley in 1:58.27 and 100-yard butterfly in 52.00.

Andres McKeon of Coral Springs and Carter Carlson of Deerfield Beach were also double winners.

McKeon won the 200-yard freestyle in 1:50.19 and 500-yard freestyle in 4:55.55.

Carlson won the 100-yard freestyle in 49.34 and 100-yard breaststroke in 1:02.92 and anchored the Bucks’ winning 200-yard freestyle relay that won in 1:31.55.

Connor Dietrich of Douglas won the boys diving title with 450.45 points. Teammate Olivia Rosen won the girls diving title with 410.60.

Boca Raton High School will host the Region 3-4A meet at Bobcat Aquatic Complex on Friday, Nov. 2 at 11 a.m. for diving and 5:30 p.m. for swimming. The event is timed finals.

Pembroke Pines Charter Girls Capture District 11-3A Title; Legaspi, Torres Win District Titles

FORT LAUDERDALE, October 24, 2018—Pembroke Pines Charter knocked off defending champion Fort Lauderdale to win the District 11-3A Swimming and Diving Championship Wednesday at Fort Lauderdale High.

The Jaguars, coached by SOFLO age group coach Rose Lockie, swept all three girl relays and relied on depth and young talent to pile up the points while freshmen Jena Legaspi and Victoria Torres won their first individual district titles and were members of winning relays.

Pembroke Pines Charter, which defeated the Flying L’s during the regular season, looked even more impressive winning the girls team title with 523 points. Fort Lauderdale was second with 358.

Legaspi, 14, won the 100-yard backstroke in 1:03.24 and was second in the 100-yard butterfly in 1:05.30.

Torres, 14, won the 100-yard breaststroke in 1:08.29 and was second in the 200-yard individual medley in 2:22.09.

Legaspi and Torres were members of the winning 200-yard medley relay and Torres led off the winning 400-yard freestyle relay.

Fort Lauderdale defended its boys team title with 535 points. Pembroke Pines Charter was runner-up with 414 points.

In the boys competition, the Flying L’s won the 200- and 400-yard freestyle relays and had five individual winners including double winner Kevin De Grijze.

The Jaguars’ lone winner was junior Rafael Rodriguez in the 500-yard freestyle in 4:49.63. He was second in the 200-yard individual medley in 1:58.99. Teammate Sebastian Sevilla was second in the 100-yard freestyle in 51.51.

The Region 4-3A meet will be hosted by Estero High School on Nov. 3 at 8:30 a.m. at Florida Gulf Coast Aquatic Center. The psych sheet is posted on fhsaa.org.

Cypress Bay Defends Titles, Sweeps District 10-4A Meet; SOFLO Swimmers Dominate

DAVIE, October 26, 2018—Defending champion Cypress Bay captured the girls and boys team titles Friday at the District 10-4A Swimming and Diving Championships at Nova High School Aquatic Center.

The seven-team meet looked more like an exciting dual meet between Cypress Bay and Cooper City.

The Lightning won the girls’ team title with 534 points. The Cowboys were runner-up with 468 points.

Cypress Bay had three individual girls winners and won the girls 200-yard freestyle relay.

Paige Lane won the 200-yard freestyle in 1:55.28, Gaby Banks won the 50-yard freestyle in 24.22 and Ellie Koch won the 100-yard backstroke in 1:01.65.

Cypress Bay won the 200-yard freestyle relay in 1:43.16 with Lane, Emily Lopez-Diaz, Jacqueline Lugo and Banks.

Cooper City won two relays and four individual events.

Kathleen Golding was a double winner in the 200-yard individual medley in 2:06.84 and 100-yard freestyle in 52.55. Mallory Schleicher won the 500-yard freestyle in 5:13.88 and was second in the 200-yard freestyle in 1:56.12. Molly Golding won the 100-yard breaststroke in 1:08.05 edging teammate Kate Kaplan in 1:08.74.

The Cowboys won the 200-yard medley relay in 1:52.85 with Solana Capalbo, Molly Golding, Kathleen Golding and Kate Kaplan. They also won the 400-yard freestyle relay in 3:39.73 with Schleicher, Molly Golding, Capalbo and Kathleen Golding.

West Broward’s Maya Coffey won the 100-yard butterfly in 1:01.32.

The Lightning won the boys’ team title with 545 pints. Cooper City was second with 474.

Cypress Bay looked impressive winning all three boys’ relays. The Lightning also won four individual events.

Philopatier Ibrahim was a double winner in the 200-yard freestyle in 1:47.29 and 500-yard freestyle in 4:48.73.

Tom Liraz won the 200-yard individual medley in 2:02.35 and Maxwell Miller won the 100-yard butterfly in 55.95.

The Cowboys also won four individual events. Robert Wilson was a double winner in the 50-yard freestyle in 22.70 and 100-yard freestyle in 50.01. Javier Roman won the 100-yard breaststroke in 1:03.27.

Tyler Flowers of Cooper City won the boys 1-meter diving title with 525.70 points. Hannah Egert of Western won the girls title with 391.90.

The most exciting race of the day was the boys’ 200-yard freestyle with the top four finishers all clocking in the 1:47s.

The final district results were not immediately released until all results from the region were submitted by meet hosts.

The Region 4-4A psych sheet can be found at fhsaa.org. Boca Raton High School will host the region meet on Nov. 1 at 5:30 p.m. for swimming and 11 a.m. for diving.

Countdown To States Begins With District Meets This Week; SOFLO Swimmers Expected To Shine

October 22, 2018—The road to high school state meets for South Florida Aquatic Club swimmers begins this week with district meets for 3A and 4A schools.

The club will be well-represented with more than fifty SOFLO swimmers competing in high school district meets in Broward and Miami-Dade counties.

All district meets are timed finals. The FHSAA will not release any final district results until the weekend when all official results are submitted to the state’s governing body.

On Tuesday, Coral Springs High School will host the District 9-4A Swimming and Diving Championship featuring defending champion St. Thomas Aquinas with SOFLO’s Lance Lesage. The meet will be held at Coral Springs Aquatic Complex at 9 a.m. for swimming and 10 a.m. for diving. Other teams competing are Douglas, Taravella, Deerfield Beach, South Plantation, Coral Glades, Monarch and Piper.

On Wednesday, Fort Lauderdale High School will host the District 11-3A meet. The Flying L’s are defending champions. The swimming begins 9 a.m. and diving at noon. The meet is expected to be more of a dual meet between Fort Lauderdale and Pembroke Pines Charter, led by Rafael Rodriguez. Other teams are Nova, South Broward, Northeast, Ely and Dillard.

On Thursday, Hialeah Gardens, led by Jennifer Rodriguez, will host the District 11-4A meet at Miami-Dade North Aquatic Center at 9 a.m. Other teams are Miami Beach, Miami Columbus, Coral Gables, Our Lady of Lourdes, Dr. Krop, American, Miami and Hialeah. Miami Beach girls and Columbus boys are defending champions.

On Friday, Flanagan will host the District 10-4A meet at Nova High School’s pool. The swimming, which features the most SOFLO swimmers including defending state champion Kathleen Golding, Molly Golding, Mallory Schleicher and Robert Wilson of Cooper City and Paige Lane and Gaby Banks of Cypress Bay, begins 8:30 a.m. and diving at noon. Cypress Bay is defending champion. Other teams are Everglades, Flanagan, McArthur, West Broward and Western.

The top two finishers in each event from each district meet as well as the next overall best times at-large for a field of 24 from the remaining best times among top 16 finishers in the district meets will move on to regions.

For relays, the district champion advances plus the next overall best times at-large for a field of 16 from the remaining best times among eight finishers.

In diving, the top two in each district plus 18 at-large spots from the divers who placed in the top 16 in district meets. All divers must meet the minimum qualifying score of 280 points in the district meet.

The 1A and 2A teams, including NSU University School and American Heritage Plantation, both featuring SOFLO swimmers, will start qualifying at next week’s district meets throughout South Florida while the 3A-4A district qualifies advance to the region meets.

FORT LAUDERDALE, October 20, 2018—In an exciting regular season finale that featured several close races, Pine Crest and St. Andrew’s, two Class 1A swimming powers, split on Saturday at Woodson Pool.

Pine Crest girls looked impressive en route to finishing the regular season undefeated at 10-0 with a 107-79 victory. In addition to the Scots, the Panthers also defeated reigning Class 1A state champion Bolles during the season.

The Panthers boys team dropped a 100-85 decision to the Scots to finish the regular season at 8-2.

Pine Crest is now off for two weeks of training before the state meet qualification meets begin with districts at Nova Southeastern Aquatic Center. The Sharks will host the defending district champion Panthers along with seven other teams in the District 11-1A Swimming and Diving Championship on Nov. 2 at 10 a.m.

In Saturday’s meet, Pine Crest won the girls 200- and 400-yard freestyle relays.

Andrea Santander was a double winner for the Panthers in the 200-yard individual medley in 2:05.51 and 100-yard freestyle in 51.99.

Emily Trieschman was a double winner for St. Andrew’s in the 200-yard freestyle in 1:53.53 and 500-yard freestyle in 5:03.42.

Pine Crest’s Sara Lin, 12, knocked off defending state breaststroke champion Shayna Fetes, 17, of St. Andrew’s in an exciting 100-yard breaststroke race, 1:06.15-1:06.54.

St. Andrew’s swept all three boys relays and won five individual events.

Nicholas Vale of Pine Crest was a double winner in the 200-yard freestyle in 1:44.09 and 100-yard butterfly in 51.30.

In another exciting race, the boys’ 50-yard freestyle, four swimmers touched in the 22s, separated by 84/100ths. Ryan Nordheim of St. Andrew’s won in 22.12 followed by Joshua Hanks of Pine Crest in 22.24 and St. Andrew’s teammates Tiago Pereira in 22.30 and Seth Berke in 22.96.

In another close race, Zachary Moore of St. Andrew’s won the 100-yard freestyle in 49.13 followed by Tom Piza of St. Andrew’s in 49.29 and Pine Crest’s Joshua Hanks in 49.39.

Joshua Balbi of St. Andrew’s just edged Pine Crest’s Elvis Kotikovski in the 100-yard backstroke, 52.25-52.85.

American Heritage Plantation Tops Somerset Academy

FORT LAUDERDALE, October 17, 2018—American Heritage Plantation swept Somerset Wednesday afternoon in the Patriots’ regular season finale.

The Patriots won the combined, 213-101; girls, 92-59; and boys, 121-42 team titles and now will focus on districts.

The Patriots won the girls 200-yard medley and 400-yard freestyle relays.

Olivia Mason, Gigi Leon, Julie Mason and Emme Hall were individual winners for American Heritage Plantation.

Somerset girls kept the meet close.

Katrina Del Vecchio was a double winner for Somerset in the 50-yard freestyle in 26.00 and 100-yard freestyle in 57.15.

Luna Delgado won the 100-yard butterfly in 1:06.87. Delgado and Del Vecchio along with Payola Inestroza and Kyana Castro were members of the winning 200-yard freestyle relay in 1:55.31.

In the boys’ competition, the Patriots won the 200-yard medley and 400-yard freestyle relays.

The Patriots won all eight individual events. Joseph Lee was a double winner in the 200-yard individual medley in 2:06.93 and 100-yard butterfly in 57.31.

Nicolas Rossi won the 50-yard freestyle in 23.93 and was second in the 500-yard freestyle in 5:16.87.

NSU University School Sweeps Westminster Academy In Regular Season Home Finale; Next Up District 11-1A Meet

FORT LAUDERDALE, October 17, 2018—NSU University School had one final dress rehearsal against Westminster Academy before the post-season countdown begins.

In its regular season home finale, the Sharks’ girls team defeated Westminster Academy, 128-50, to finish the season 8-1.

The Sharks swept all three girls relays. Sophomore Mariangela Cincotti was a double winner in the 200-yard freestyle in 2:01.59 and 100-yard butterfly in 1:02.15. She also anchored the winning 200- and 400-yard freestyle relays.

Westminster Academy was led by double winner JoJo Richter in the 50-yard freestyle in 25.93 and 100-yard backstroke in 1:02.42.

Sharks seventh grader Alexis Christensen won the 500-yard freestyle in 5:29.75.

Maia Goldstein of NSU University School won the 1-meter diving event in 289.20 just off her record for six dives.

The boys team also won, 119-55, to finish the season 9-1. Both teams’ only loss was to Pine Crest.

The Sharks also swept all three boys relays. The Sharks had three double winners–Enrique Perez, Marcelo Carrion and Pedro Pavao.

Perez, a freshman, won the 200-yard freestyle in 2:13.89 and 100-yard butterfly in 59.99.

Carrion, also a freshman, won the 200-yard individual medley in 2:06.16 and 500-yard freestyle in 5:26.70.

Pavao, a sophomore, won the 100-yard freestyle in 50.86 and 100-yard backstroke in 1:01.41.

Westminster Academy had two winners, diver Stephen Cardea and sprinter Noah Sipowski in the 50-yard freestyle.

NSU University School now has nearly two weeks to fine tune and taper before the post-season journey begins.

The Sharks will host the District 11-1A Swimming and Diving Championships on Nov 2 at 10 a.m. Nine schools will compete including Westminster Academy, Calvary Christian, Chaminade-Madonna, North Broward Prep, defending champion Pine Crest, Posnack, Sagemont, South Florida Heat and the host Sharks.

The NSU University School senior swimmers were also honored during the meet.
