Pompano Beach Piranhas Turkey Classic Heading Food Drive During Weekend Meet

By Sharon Robb

POMPANO BEACH, November 15, 2018—The Pompano Beach Piranhas Turkey Classic, one of the largest swim meets and food drives, will be held Saturday and Sunday at Pompano Beach Aquatic Center.

While swimmers will get a chance to race before the holiday, even more important is the Food Drive To Feed The Hungry in Broward County.

The unique idea has become popular among swimmers, parents and coaches. Instead of gate admission, attendees are asked to donate non-perishable food items that will be collected at the gate.

Two sessions are scheduled on Saturday and three sessions on Sunday each day at 10 a.m. and 45 minutes after the second and third warm-up sessions.

South Florida Aquatic Club is among an impressive field of Florida Gold Coast teams. SOFLO has 51 swimmers competing in 193 individual events.

SOFLO top seeds are Shelby Evans, 8, in the 25-yard breaststroke and Martin Petkov, 9, in the 50-yard freestyle.

Alyssa Katelyn D’Souza, 13, will make her debut in the 50 butterfly, 50 breaststroke and 50 freestyle.

Dahlia Maya Hirsh, 12, will make her debut in the 50 butterfly, 50 breaststroke and 50 freestyle.

Dylan McVeigh, 8, will make his debut in the 25 backstroke, 25 breaststroke and 25 freestyle.

Gabrielle L’mae Salgado, 10, will make her debut in the 50 butterfly, 50 backstroke, 50 breaststroke and 50 freestyle.

Adam Stewart, 10, will make his debut in the 50 butterfly, 50 backstroke, 50 breaststroke and 50 freestyle.

In addition to SOFLO and host Piranhas, among other Florida Gold Coast teams competing are Azura, Pine Crest, Swim Fort Lauderdale, Midtown, Wellington Wahoos, SwimFast, Blue Marlins, Hialeah StorCoral Springs Swim Club, Heritage Aquatics and Westminster Academy.
