SOFLO’s Mallory Schleicher Fifth On Day Two Of USA Swimming Futures Championships; Podkoscielny Gets First U.S. Olympic Trials Cut

GREENSBORO, N.C., August 2, 2019—Mallory Schleicher was top finisher for South Florida Aquatic Club at the USA Swimming Futures Championships Friday at Greensboro Aquatic Center.

Against a fast field, Schleicher, 15, was fifth in the 400-meter individual medley in a lifetime-best 4:58.69 with a time drop of 4.21 seconds. She qualified eighth in morning prelims in 5:04.45.

It was the first time Schleicher cracked the 5-minute barrier in the 400 IM.

Pine Crest’s Julia Podkoscielny, 14, won the 400 IM in 4:50.42, also a best time with a 4.52 time drop, another 5-minute cracked barrier and even more impressive, her first U.S. Olympic Trials cut.

Schleicher was also a member of SOFLO’s eighth place women’s 400-meter freestyle relay in 3:59.94 with teammates Olivia Dinehart, Gaby Banks and Paige Lane.

SOFLO’s Schleicher, Bono, Relays Open Action At USA Swimming Futures Championships

GREENSBORO, N.C., August 2, 2019—The USA Swimming Futures Championships got under way Thursday with South Florida Aquatic Club swimmers getting in some early action at Greensboro Aquatic Center.

Mallory Schleicher, 15, was 17th in the 800-meter freestyle in 9:08.38.

Dominic Bono, 16, was 45th in the 1500-meter freestyle in 17:13.84.

SOFLO’s A relay of Schleicher, Elena Dinehart, Paige Lane and Olivia Dinehart finished 12th in thr 800-meter freestyle relay in 8:43.98.

SOFLO’s boys 800-meter freestyle relay of Juan Mora, Juan Pablo Pineda, Robert Wilson and Miguel Sierra was 17th in 8:11.49.

SOFLO’s Smutny Finishes Sixth On Day Three Of Southern Zone Age Group Championships

CARY, N.C., August 2, 2019—Maddie Smutny came up big for the Florida Gold Coast All-Stars Thursday at the Southern Zone Age Group Championships at Triangle Aquatic Center.

The 14-year-old South Florida Aquatic Club Shark was sixth in the 400-meter indivudual medley in a best time 5:15.07 with a time drop of 2.79 seconds.

Alejandro Mateus, 14, was 14th in the 400-meter individual medley in a best time 4:59.41 with a 2.89 time drop. He was also 21st in the 200-meter backstroke in 2:23.62, another best time with a 0.58 time drop.

SOFLO’s Smutny, Mateus Top 20 Finishers On Day Two Of Southern Zone Age Group Championships

CARY, N.C., August 2, 2019—South Florida Aquatic Club’s Maddie Smutny and Alejandro Mateus finished among the Top 20 Wednesday at the Southern Zone Age Group Championships at Triangle Aquatic Center.

Smutny, 14, finished 16th in the 200-meter freestyle in 2:12.86, 12th in the 100-meter butterfly in 1:06.78 and was a member of the Florida Gold Coast’s seventh-place 400-meter medley relay in 4:35.41 with teammates Nicol Bellardi, Michelle Fenandez and Mariana Cote.

Mateus, 14, was 17th in the 100-meter butterfly in a best time 1:02.67 with a time drop 0.67.
