South Florida Aquatic Club Sweeps Sarasota Sharks In Virtual Meet Season-Opener

By Sharon Robb

PEMBROKE PINES, October 4, 2020–South Florida Aquatic Club won the Battle of the Sharks this past weekend.

In a unique cross-state virtual swim meet in front of a livestream audience, South Florida Aquatic Club Sharks swept the combined, girls and boys team titles against the Sarasota Sharks at Academic Village Pool and Selby Aquatic Center.

The two-day meet was the first competition against another club since March 8. SOFLO has been hosting intrasquad meets since July 28, but this past weekend was the first opportunity to gauge training and competitive level against other talented swimmers in a safe and controlled environment. All COVID-19 safety measures were observed throughout the meet.

SOFLO won the combined team title, 2,755-2,557; girls’ team title, 1,310-1,252; and boys’ team title, 1,445-1,305.

The competition brought out the best in both teams. SOFLO swimmers posted 395 time drops and Sarasota Sharks had 224 time drops.

The two-day meet was sanctioned by Florida Gold Coast and Florida Swimming and followed strict COVID-19 safety measures and precautions including no fans. No parents or friends were allowed to congregate outside the pool fencing or pool deck. The meet was run without volunteers other than a limited number of officials and ten lane timers.

With 177 swimmers, SOFLO had the largest contingent and virtual meet in the state. Ninety-eight swimmers competed in 553 individual events and eight relays in the 13-and-over. Seventy-nine swimmers raced in 280 individual events and four relays in 12-and-under.

SOFLO’s four-time Jamaican Olympian Alia Atkinson, 31, completed her fine tuning for her Oct. 16 International Swimming League season-opener in Hungary. Atkinson won the 100-yard breaststroke in 1:03.06 and was third in the 200-yard freestyle in 1:52.86.

Paige Lane was a double winner in the 50-yard butterfly in 26.54 and 100-yard butterfly in 58.57.

Javier Colmenares was a double winner for the 13-14 boys in the 100-yard breaststroke in 1:03.27 and 100-yard butterfly in 57.36. Other 13-14 winners were Diego Nazario-Vazquez in the 50-yard butterfly in 26.20 and Kevin Moya in the 50-yard backstroke in 29.23.

In the 15-and-over competition, Julio Horrego was a double winner in the 100-yard breaststroke in 55.50 and 50-yard breaststroke in 26.02.
