FHSAA State Swim 1A Meet, Other State Meets Moved To Sunday Because Of Expected Bad Weather

GAINESVILLE, November 11, 2020—For the first time in the history of the state swimming and diving championships, the Florida High School Athletic Association postponed Friday’s state championships in cross country, swimming and volleyball because of Tropical Storm Eta.

Those contests will now occur on Sunday, an extreme rarity in Florida high school sports. High school athletes are rarely allowed to compete on Sundays.

Affected are the Class 1A Swimming and Diving prelims and finals at Sailfish Splash Waterpark in Stuart, in which Bolles will pursue its 33rd boys title and 30th girls title.

SOFLO has nine swimmers in the Class 1A meet including Olivia Dinehart and Miguel Sierra, both of Cutler Bay.

The Class 1A and 2A cross country meets at Apalachee Regional Park in Tallahassee, with contenders Miami-Dade, Broward and Palm Beach counties, are Sunday beginning 7:30 a.m.

Also postponed is Bishop Kenny’s Class 4A volleyball final against Fort Lauderdale Cardinal Gibbons, which now moves to 1 p.m. Sunday at Suncoast Credit Union Arena in Fort Myers.

Any spectator tickets already pre-purchased through GoFan will continue to be honored at the newly-schedule date and time.

Schedules remain unchanged for teams that were set to compete Saturday, including State 2A Swimming and Diving Meet in Stuart, featuring defending champion Pine Crest Panthers.
