Lack Of Resources Put Broward County Winter Sports Including Swimming On Hold

PEMBROKE PINES, November 21, 2020–High school swimming and other winter sports at Broward County public schools have been put on hold.

Practices for all winter sports have been pushed back to Dec. 14 and the regular season will now start on Jan. 4 instead of the original Dec. 5 starting date.

Teams will be allowed to compete in holiday tournaments before Jan. 4 to enable them to keep their holiday tournament commitments. Winter sports practices had started this past week but are now on hold until the new Dec. 14 starting date.

Shawn Cerra, Director of Athletics and Student Activities for Broward County Public Schools’ BCAA made the announcement on Friday.

Cerra stressed that the winter season is not being postponed specifically because of the COVID-19 rising positive case numbers.

Cerra said the holding pattern is mainly because schools’ resources and personnel would be stretched too thin in addition to overlap issues for the sports. He said there were five fall sports still playing and now there will be five winter sports.

“It’s a numbers game,” Cerra told the media. “It really comes down to double the number of our athletes on campus, and then also the facilities side of it, trying to accommodate all those sports.”

The winter season will now likely include fewer meets. There were plans to hold six dual swim meets before a tri-county championship with Miami-Dade and Palm Beach in January/February at Boca Raton High School Aquatic Center.

Miami-Dade public schools are staying with the Dec. 4 start date for winter sports competitions. Palm Beach County remains on schedule to begin winter sports on Nov. 30 and Dec. 7.
