Louisville Wins First Atlantic Coast Conference Men’s Title By Two Points; Florida State Finishes Fifth

By Sharon Robb
GREENSBORO, N.C., February 28, 2021–For the first time in school history, the University of Louisville won a thrilling Atlantic Coast Conference Men’s Swimming and Diving Championship Saturday at Greensboro Aquatic Center.

The Cardinals, coached by Arthur Albiero since 2003, broke five school records, had eight first place swims and won in the closest margin of victory in ACC history.

Louisville finished with 1,181 points and edged North Carolina State by two points in the meet. N.C. State was second with 1,179 and Virginia Tech was third with 1,085.

Florida State, with St. Andrew’s alum Izaak Bastian, finished fifth with 740 points.

Louisville needed to finish in the top three of the 400-yard freestyle relay, the final race of the meet, to win the championship. The teams were separated by 10 points going into the relay.

The Louisville relay team of Haridi Sameh, Nicolas Albiero, Michael Eastman and Tanner Cummings delivered, finishing second to N.C. State (2:48.19) with a time of 2:48.37.

“What a meet all around,” Albiero said. “I am proud to be part of this conference. It has been a crazy year for all of us. I am so proud of the guys. They found a way to be resilient.

“Plenty of things weren’t pretty but this group has so much fight. I love their passion and pride. We are who we are because of the people who came before us.

“This is such a special group. We do it the Louisville way, with heart and with not dwelling on past mistakes.”

Louisville’s score marked the highest point total in program history, bettering the previous mark of 1,178 set in 2015 during its first year in the ACC.

The win snapped N.C. State’s winning streak.

The Cardinals return to the Greensboro Aquatic Center for the NCAA Championships on March 24-27.

Vlad Polyakov, a St. Thomas Aquinas and Coral Springs Swim Club alum, has been a member of the Louisville coaching staff and men’s recruiting coordinator since September 2012. He is a three-time Olympian and world champion for Kazakhstan and NCAA champion for Alabama, where Albiero was on the swim coaching staff at the time.

In early January, Albiero was forced to watch his team’s Missouri meet on his home computer because of COVID-19 contact tracing protocols.

Notre Dame’s Jack Hoagland was named the Most Valuable Swimmer after becoming the first men’s swimmer since 2018 to win three individual events. Hoagland won the 500-yard freestyle, 400-yard individual medley and 1,650-yard freestyle.

North Carolina’s Anton Down-Jenkins was voted the Most Valuable Diver last week after winning the 1-meter and 3-meter competitions.

University of Miami swept the podium for the men’s platform diving competition. The Hurricanes’ Zach Cooper won the event after taking silver in 2020 with a score of 421.50, extending the Hurricanes’ streak to five straight titles in the event. Max Flory (416.05) and Brodie Scapens (380.70) rounded out the top three.

TYR JANUARY BOY SWIMMER OF THE MONTH: Nico Pelaez

By Sharon Robb
PEMBROKE PINES, February 24, 2021–Nico Pelaez can’t wait to get back in the pool to take up where he left off before fracturing his leg two weeks ago.

The South Florida Aquatic Club swimmer, who trains with Coach Issy and Mako Sharks, had several outstanding swims at the SOFLO New Year’s Invitational before the freak accident which has him sidelined for at least two more weeks.

Pelaez, 14, an eighth grader at Somerset Academy Silver Palms in Miami, had best times in all of his events including his first swim under 1 minute in the 100-yard butterfly (59.86) and 6.3 percent drop in the 200-yard individual medley (2:13.81).

His favorite stroke is butterfly. The meet he was happiest with was the Speedo Winter Championships where he made JO and Senior Championship cut times.

“I had my eye on the prize for those bigger meets,” said Pelaez, who was also happy with his 1,650 race. “I thought that race was pretty good. I just think about the end and finishing the race and whatever happens happens.”

Pelaez started swimming four years ago. Before that he was involved in taekwondo. His background in the martial art has helped his agility and flexibility.

“I just wanted a different sport that not many people do and it’s fun to swim,” Pelaez said.

“I knew how hard it was going to be but I still wanted to stay with it,” he said. “I go to every practice. I put maximum effort into swimming and focus as best I can in practices. I think it’s working for me.”

Like many of his teammates, Pelaez was able to adjust being out of the pool during the early months of the COVID-19 pandemic.

“It was difficult because swimming is every day,” Pelaez said. “I didn’t have too much to do so I tried to swim in my pool with the bands. I did dryland and other stuff.

“I felt so much better when I got back in the pool and got back to normal a little bit. I was a little bit behind because it wasn’t the same as going every day in swimming but I felt pretty fit with the dryland. I caught up to my original pace pretty quickly.”

Pelaez fractured his leg when he was playing with friends and landed wrong on his right leg. He has been able to do dryland every day and work on the vasa trainer to help his strength and endurance.

Despite the setback, Pelaez has some lofty goals when he returns to the pool.

“I hope it’s not long for my recovery but I haven’t swam in quite a while, it’s already been two weeks and I have another two weeks. I’m just going to push myself when I get back and swim as many meets as I can.

“My goal is to get into Senior Champs and sectionals would be nice,” Pelaez said. “Swimming in college would be great, too.”

TYR JANUARY GIRL SWIMMER OF THE MONTH: Sarah Bedoya

By Sharon Robb
PEMBROKE PINES, February 23, 2021–Hard work and dedication really does pay off if you are a swimmer.

Sarah Bedoya of South Florida Aquatic Club is a perfect example of that.

Bedoya, 13, a seventh grader at Glades Middle School, is having a breakthrough season.

At the SOFLO New Year’s Invitational at Academic Village Pool, she swam best times in all her events including a four percent drop in the 200-yard backstroke in 2:42.42.

“She is a consistently hard-working positive influence in the practice environment across the month,” said her Senior Development coach Jack Davies.

Her progression continued in February at the BC Developmental Challenge where she added the 200 freestyle and 200 individual medley to her three other events (500 freestyle, 50 freestyle, 100 freestyle) she had already qualified for this weekend’s BB Silvers Championship. She also qualified in the 50 butterfly but it’s not a 13-14 event at BB Silvers.

“A couple years ago I started improving and dropping time,” Bedoya said. “That’s when I decided to work harder to get better.

“I think it’s good to work hard so you can reach your goals. Sure I get tired, but then I just take a little rest and I will be right back up again.”

Bedoya has been swimming with SOFLO for five years. She learned how to swim when she was 2. She was involved with gymnastics and ballet before swimming, but decided to focus solely on swimming. It helped that her older sister Sophia, now in college, swam with SOFLO. She would go to her practices and watch the older swimmers.

“I always really liked the pool and the ocean,” Bedoya. “It’s fun to be in the water and feel like you’re light weight and not be dragged down by gravity.

“I would go to my sister’s practices a lot when my mom would go to pick her up. I loved watching them and see what they were doing. I decided I wanted to try it.

“It’s fun getting to spend time in the water with your friends training together. I like competing and seeing other people swim.”

Her favorite stroke is the backstroke. “I like looking at the sky and you can breathe easier,” she said.

Bedoya said she likes to set goals each year. This year she wants to improve her times.

“I want to drop time in all my meets and try to get best times,” Bedoya said. “I am definitely happy I am doing that.”

During the COVID-19 pandemic Bedoya has been doing virtual school on her computer at home. “It’s pretty good, I don’t mind it,” she said.

Like most of her teammates, she did virtual dryland training when SOFLO was out of the pool because of pandemic safety protocols.

“I was so glad when we got back in, I really missed it so much,” she said. “The virtual dryland was fun, seeing everyone. I am glad I stayed with it and didn’t get discouraged.”

Each TYR Swimmer of the Month receives a free TYR backpack.

Virginia Wins Atlantic Coast Conference Women’s Championship; Florida State Seventh

By Sharon Robb
GREENSBORO, N.C., February 22, 2021–University of Virginia won the Atlantic Coast Conference Women’s Swimming and Diving Championship Saturday for the third time in four years at Greensboro Aquatic Center.

Virginia totaled 1,486 points over four days to win the title for a record 17th time. North Carolina State was second with 1,317 points. Florida State finished seventh with 551 points.

Virginia’s Paige Madden, who won three individual titles and was part of two winning relay teams, was named the meet’s Most Valuable Swimmer for the second straight year. Madden won the 1,650-yard freestyle (15:45.45) on the final day.

Florida State had ten scoring individual swims in addition to the 400-yard freestyle relay on the final night of the meet.

“We finished off really well,” FSU head coach Neal Studd said. “Passing two teams in overall points and we only scored four points less than last year without divers and we DQed a relay. We’re really excited for the future of this team.”

Junior Maddie McDonald led off the night with a personal best time in the 200 back at (NCAA B) 1:55.33 for 11th overall. The time moves her up to third on the FSU All-Time Top 10 list.

The Seminoles had six swimmers score in the 100 freestyle for the first time in school history.

The men’s swimming portion of the meet begins Wednesday with the 200-yard medley and 800-yard freestyle relays.

No spectators will be allowed at the meet.
