FORT MYERS BEACH, April 16, 2021—South Florida Aquatic Club’s Mallory Schleicher is among a national-caliber field for the USA Swimming Open Water 5K National Championship Sunday at Lynn Hall Park.

Schleicher, 17, a junior at Cooper City High School, is seeded tenth among a women’s field of 18 open water swimmers in 17 minutes, 18.67 seconds. She is the only Florida Gold Coast swimmer in the 5K field.

At the 2019 USA Swimming Open Water Junior National Championships Schelicher was seventh in the 5K against the nation’s top swimmers.

Schleicher, a USA Swimming Scholastic All-American, has verbally committed to University of Florida.

Schleicher is a high school state meet qualifier as a freshman and sophomore. The distance swimmer is a Summer and Winter Junior Nationals qualifier. In March 2019, she was second in both the 400 individual medley and 1500 freestyle and third in the 400 freestyle at sectionals.

She also has five Top 20 finishes at the Gainesville Sectionals before placing fifth in the 400 IM and ninth in the 400 freestyle at the Greensboro Futures. She has her Futures cuts in the 200 and 800 freestyle and 200 and 1,650 freestyle.

Her long course meters best times are: 400 IM, 4:53.96; 200 IM, 2:22.53; 1,500 free, 17:18.67; 800 free, 9:08.38; 400 free, 4:21.95; and 200 free, 2:05.41.

And, her short course yards best times are 1,650 free, 17:11.62; 1,000 free, 10:23.53; 500 free, 4:55.86; 200 free, 1:52.55 and 400 IM, 4:26.04.

The women’s 5K field features Ashley Twichell, 31, of TAC Titans and Haley Anderson, 29, of Mission Viejo Nadadores.

The 10K event is Friday with the 7.5K junior national championship also on Sunday.

Athletes who have previously been selected (Haley Anderson, Ashley Twichell, Jordan Wilimovsky) to compete in the 10k at the 2021 Olympic Games secure a spot on both rosters automatically.

In Sunday’s 7.5K event, Ella Martinez, 17, of St. Andrew’s Swimming is top seed in 16:04.53 and Anna Auld, 17, of East Coast Aquatic Club is seventh in 17:00.81.
