FSU Seminoles Win Quad Meet; Izaak Bastian, SOFLO’s Gaby Banks Top Three Finishers

TALLAHASSEE, October 30, 2021—Florida State swept North Florida, West Florida and Florida Southern Saturday in its annual “Paint It Pink” Meet.

Sponsored by Tallahassee Memorial Hospital, the meet supports the fight against breast cancer.

“This meet is always a lot of fun,” FSU head coach Neal Studd said. “It’s great to get some other Florida teams here for us and to mix it up a little. It’s a great opportunity for the athletes that did not travel last week to show us what they have.”

The No. 15 Seminoles picked up a combined four wins at Morcom Aquatics Center.

The 15th-ranked men’s team (3-0, 1-0 ACC) defeated Florida Southern 196.50-65.50.

The women’s team (4-1, 1-0 ACC) picked up three victories, defeating UWF 240-59, North Florida 248-45 and the Mocs 244-49.

“It was good to see some different events out of people today,” Studd said. “We saw some people step up and help us in areas where we go against SEC and ACC teams.”

The Seminoles won a combined 26 events, with 19 sweeps including the both the men’s and women’s 200 medley relay.

South Florida Aquatic Club’s Gaby Banks, a sophomore who competes for Jamaica internationally, was third in the 50-yard freestyle in 24.40, 11th in the 100-yard freestyle in 54.75 and was a member of the 200-yard medley relay that finished second in 1:47.40.

Senior Izaak Bastian, a St. Andrew’s alum and member of the Bahamian national team, was third in the 100-yard freestyle in 47.18 and was a member of the third place 200-yard freestyle relay that finished in 1:24.73.

In the women’s meet, Nina Kucheran (1:52.35), Ashley Zettle (1:52.97) and Tania Quaglieri (1:55.87) swept the 200 freestyle and Jaden Herbet was first in the 100 backstroke in 57.24.

FSU added another sweep in the 100 breaststroke, led by Maddy Huggins (1:03.04) followed by Hannah Womer (1:03.37) and Nora Woods (1:07.08).

Edith Jernstedt (2:03.75) won the 200 butterfly and Pia Murray (2:08.77) followed was second.

Gloria Muzito won the 50 freestyle in 24.08 followed by Aryanna Fernandes in 24.18.

Herbet won her second event of the day, leading a sweep of the 200 backstroke in 2:05.29, followed by Murray in 2:07.62 and Natalie Peterson in 2:08.53.

Katherine Baker was first in the 200 breaststroke (2:23.51) ahead of Rachel Moran (2:24.20) and Woods (2:24.66).

FSU took the top three places in the 500 freestyle with Phoebe Griffiths (4:59.23), Kucheran (5:03.89) and Zettle (5:08.72).

Womer added a win in the 100 butterfly (55.15) ahead of Murray (56.64) and Huggins in third (57.97).

The women added another sweep in the 400 individual medley led by Syd VanOvermeiren (4:24.81) followed by Sydney Boals (4:28.22) and Olivia Sapio (4:31.67).

FSU took first in the 200 freestyle relay by Muzito, Zsofia Kurdi, Quaglieri and Womer in 1:36.09.

Samantha Vear (284.18) won the 1-meter diving ahead of teammates Victoria Cervantes (280.65) and Isabel Gregersen (278.40). On 3-meter, Cervantes (314.70) edged Gregersen (302.03) and Vear (281.93) for first-place.

After the sweep of the 200 medley relay in the men’s meet, Nick Mason came back with a win in the 1000 freestyle in 9:26.05 followed by Zach Smith in (9:27.54).

FSU swept the 200 freestyle with Yordan Yanchev (1:39.95), Sam Budd (1:40.52) and David Quirie (1:42.23).

Florida Southern’s Brandon Dyck won the 100 backstroke. FSU’s Peter Varjasi won the 100 breaststroke in 55.08.

FSU had a one-two finish in the 200 butterfly with Brennan Hammond (1:51.97) and Auben Nugent (1:52.27).

Max McCusker (20.48), Jakub Ksiazek (20.71) and Ian Cooper (20.75) combined for the sweep of the 50 freestyle before the break.

Adrian Aguilar won the 100 freestyle in 45.84. Arijus Pavlidi (1:50.16) won the 200 backstroke before FSU swept the 500 freestyle with Yanchev (4:29.89), Aziz Ghaffari (4:31.78) and Jason Brzozowski (4:35.66).

Mason Herbet won the 100 butterfly in 48.56 ahead of Varjasi (49.35) and Budd (49.36).

Nick Mason won the 400 individual medley (4:00.23) five seconds ahead of Brzozowski (4:05.50) and Tanker Speck (4:06.12).

The men finished the meet with a sweep in the 200 freestyle relay led by the ‘A’ team of Blake Moran, Mason Herbet, Varjasi and McCusker.

The Seminoles’ next meet is Friday, Nov. 5 at 2 p.m. against Florida at Morcom Aquatics Center for the Mental Health Awareness meet.

Pompano Beach Wins First-Ever Region 4-2A Boys Title; Gulliver Prep Wins Girls Crown; Somerset’s Enrique Rodriguez Top SOFLO Finisher

STUART, October 30, 2021—Pompano Beach made history winning its first boys title in the Region 4-2A Swimming and Diving Championship Saturday at Sailfish Splash Waterpark.

The Tornadoes, with two runner-up finishes in the 200- and 400-yard freestyle relays, won with 207.5 points. Mater Lakes was second with 192.5 and Somerset was third with 178 points.

Gulliver Prep, with two relay wins and one individual win, won the girls title with 353 points. Cape Coral was second with 245.5 and Jensen Beach was third with 224 points.

Somerset junior Enrique Rodriguez of South Florida Aquatic Club won the 500-yard freestyle in 4:41.79 and was second in the 200-yard individual medley in 2:00.04.

SOFLO’s Aldo Zepeda, also a junior at Somerset, was second in the 100-yard backstroke in 53.02.

SOFLO’s Matthew Tarafa, Anthony Martinez and Agustin Rodriguez were members of Mater Academy’s winning 200-yard freestyle relay that won in 1:27.96. Ronny Rueda was the other relay member. The foursome also won the 400-yard freestyle relay in 3:11.88.

Tarafa was also second in the 200-yard freestyle in 1:44.38 and Rodriguez was third in 1:45.41. Martinez was fifth in the 100-yard butterfly in 53.50. Tarafa was fifth in the 100-yard freestyle in 48.03. Rodriguez was third in the 500-yard freestyle in 4:46.78.

SOFLO teammate Anthony Robaina of Mater Academy was second in the 100-yard breaststroke in 1:00.73.

Pompano Beach relied on relay talent and depth. The 200-yard freestyle relay of sophomore Gianni Famiano, junior Charles Wingold, junior Steven Gary and senior Joshua Cajuste was second in 1:28.67.

The 400-yard freestyle relay of sophomore Giuliano Brunetti, Cajuste, Famiano and Gary was second in 3:14.13.

Cajuste tied for second with Aria Besharat of Mourning in the 50-yard freestyle in 21.59, just 1/100th of a second behind John Trieu in 21.58. He was also third in the 100-yard freestyle in 47.20.

Pompano Beach is coached by Rogesterman Farris and Gainus Wright. Several of the swimmers are also coached by Hall of Famer and Olympian Jesse Vassallo of Pompano Beach Piranhas.

Gulliver Prep, runner-up to Pine Crest last year, reclaimed its region title with wins in the 200-yard medley and 200-yard freestyle relays. The medley relay won in 1:48.73 with Giovanna Musiello, Reese Rosenthal, Elyse Wood and Cassandra Kraft. The 200 free relay won in the 1:39.83 with Rosenthal, Wood, Aria Torretta and Kraft.

Gulliver Prep’s 400-yard freestyle relay was second in 3:37.09 with Musiello, Camila Saporta, Wood and Torretta.

Wood also won the 100-yard butterfly in 56.62.

U.S. junior national team member Blair Stoneburg of Jensen Beach was a double winner in the 200-yard freestyle in 1:50.96 and 500-yard freestyle in 4:53.28.

The State 2A meet is Friday at Sailfish Splash Waterpark.

SOFLO’s Ellie Phan Shines At Boca Raton Swim Team Not So Scary Halloween Invite

BOCA RATON, October 30, 2021—At 6, one of the youngest swimmers in the meet also shined the brightest at the Boca Raton Swim Team Not So Scary Halloween Invite Saturday at Boca Raton High School Aquatic Center.

South Florida Aquatic Club’s Ellie Phan won the 8-and-under 25-yard butterfly in a best time 20.59, dropping 1.69 seconds off her previous best.

Phan was also second in the 25-yard breaststroke in 25.38, also a best time dropping 1.37. She was fourth in the 25-yard backstroke in 23.77 and tenth in the 25-yard freestyle in 22.33.

Other top SOFLO finishers were:

Aleksander Chaussky, 13, was fourth in the 13-18 200-yard individual medley in a best time 2:33.97, dropping 3.18; sixth in the 13-14 100-yard backstroke in 1:10.45, dropping 15.59 according to Meet Mobile and eighth in the 13-14 100-yard freestyle in 59.98, also a best time dropping 2.55 and dipping below 1 minute for the first time.

Isabel Schlicht, 16, was third in the 15-18 100-yard butterfly in 1:15.91, fourth in the 15-18 100-yard freestyle in a best time 1:02.05, dropping 1.12, sixth in the 15-18 100-yard breaststroke in 1:27.82 and tenth in the 13-18 200-yard individual medley in 2:47.40.

Mikhel Martin, 12, was sixth in the 12-and-under 100-yard individual medley in a best time 1:13.00, dropping 3.83; seventh in the 12-and-under 50-yard butterfly in a best time 32.01 dropping 2.83 and 11th in the 12-and-under 50-yard breaststroke in a best time 40.98, dropping 1.35.

Jemma Baldwin, 11, fourth in the 12-and-under 50-yard backstroke in a best time 33.22, dropping 3.31; seventh in the 50-yard breaststroke in a best time 39.51, dropping 2.48; seventh in the 50-yard freestyle in a best time 29.00, dropping 0.64 and seventh in the 100-yard individual medley in 1:13.62.

Eric Ferrer, 11, was eighth in the 50-yard freestyle in 29.21; tenth in the 100-yard individual medley in a best time 1:14.80, dropping 4.16; 12th in the 50-yard butterfly in 33.86 and 13th in the 50-yard backstroke in a best time 35.73, dropping 0.64.

Martin Petkov, 12, was fourth in the 50-yard breaststroke in a best time 38.29, dropping 0.46; seventh in the 50-yard backstroke in a best time 34.21, dropping 0.51; ninth in the 50-yard freestyle in a best time 29.24, dropping 0.82 and 14th in the 50-yard butterfly in a best time 34.34, dropping 1.21.

Santiago Zuluaga, 6, fifth in the 8-and-under 25-yard backstroke in a best time 24.53, dropping 0.02; fifth in the 25-yard breaststroke in a best time 28.43, dropping 0.04; seventh in the 25-yard freestyle in a best time 21.30, dropping 2.90 and ninth in the 25-yard butterfly in a best time 28.36, dropping 1.04.

Savanna Alonso, 8, was fourth in the 25-yard breaststroke in 27.76; sixth in the 25-yard freestyle in 20.93; eighth in the 25-yard butterfly in 27.17 and tenth in the 25-yard backstroke in 26.47.

Maximiliano Remmele, 12, sixth in the 12-and-under 50-yard freestyle in 28.36 and ninth in the 50-yard butterfly in a best time 32.78, dropping 0.50.

South Florida Aquatic Club had 56 swimmers (29 boys and 27 girls) race in 189 individual events over two sessions. The meet was capped at 160 athletes, 80 per session.

In addition to host Boca Raton Swim Team and SOFLO, other Florida Gold Coast teams in the field were East Coast Aquatic Club, Tsunami Swim Team, Swim Fort Lauderdale and Plantation Swim Team.

St. Andrew’s Scots Sweep Region 4-1A Team Titles; SOFLO’s Maddy Smutny, Olivia Dinehart Win

FORT LAUDERDALE, October 29, 2021—In the state’s fastest region qualifier, St. Andrew’s swept the boys and girls team titles Friday at the Region 4-1A Swimming and Diving Championships at Nova Southeastern University Aquatic Center.

The Scots won the girls’ team title with 376 points followed by Pine Crest with 369 and King’s Academy with 323 points.

The Scots won the boys’ team title with 350 points. Pine Crest was second with 319 and South Florida Heat was third with 273 points.

The 22-team field featured some of the most talented swimmers in the state including U.S. junior national team members Julia Podkoscielny of Pine Crest, Erika Pelaez of South Florida Heat and Josh Zuchowski of King’s Academy.

The Scots were led by girls’ individual winner Aspen Gersper in the 100-yard butterfly in 54.45 and winning 400-yard freestyle relay.

Pine Crest had four individual winners with Podkoscielny in the 200-yard individual medley in 2:01.89; Ava Anderson in 1-meter diving; Hanna Elks Smith in the 100-yard freestyle in 51.76 and Riley Botting in the 500-yard freestyle in 4:52.97.

Pelaez was a double winner in the 50-yard freestyle in 23.02 and 100-yard backstroke in 54.11.

Cutler Bay had two individual champions, both South Florida Aquatic Club swimmers. Junior Maddy Smutny won the 200-yard freestyle in 1:51.02 and junior Olivia Dinehart won the 100-yard breaststroke in 1:03.06.

The Scots’ boys were led by individual winner Kacper Rafael who tied King’s Academy’s Noah Engstrom in the 50-yard freestyle in 21.72. The Scots also won the 400-yard freestyle relay in 3:07.92.

Kaii Winkler of South Florida Heat was a double winner in the 200-yard freestyle in 1:38.00 and 100-yard freestyle in 44.51. The Heat also won the 200-yard medley and 200-yard freestyle relays.

South Florida Heat teammate Dario Martin was also a double winner in the 100-yard butterfly in 49.39 and 100-yard breaststroke in 56.58.

Zuchowski won two events in the 200-yard individual medley in 1:49.11 and 100-yard backstroke in 49.87. King’s teammate Christian Proscia won the 500-yard freestyle in 4:43.77.

Pine Crest senior diver Kevin Mendez defended his 1-meter title for his sixth crown and final opportunity to win his sixth state title.

The State 1A meet is next Saturday at Sailfish Splash Waterpark in Stuart where defending champion Jacksonville Bolles is favored to win after sweeping the Region 1-1A titles. The girls and boys teams combined to win 21 events and posted several All-American time standards.

Bolles has been named No. 1 in the nation 18 times–10 for the boys and eight for the girls. The Bolles girls have won 34 state titles and boys have won 33 state titles.

Florida Gators Sweep Georgia Bulldogs In Season Home Opener; Kathleen Golding Takes Two Seconds; Katie Ledecky Swims Men’s Exhibition 200, 500

GAINESVILLE, October 29, 2021–Florida and Georgia renewed their longtime rivalry in a dual meet Thursday and Friday at the O’Connell Center.

The Gator women defeated the Bulldogs, 153-147, and the men’s team won, 180-120.

Florida leads the all-time series with an overall record of 62-19-3 including 8-4-1 in the last eleven dual meets.

SOFLO’s Kathleen Golding, a junior, was second in the 200-yard individual medley in 2:02, third in the 200-yard freestyle in 1:48.09 and sixth in the 500-yard freestyle in 4:51.17. She also swam anchor on the Gators’ runnerup 400-yard freestyle relay that finished in 3:18.48.

Freshman Molly Golding was seventh in the 200-yard breaststroke in 2:22.09.

Freshman Anna Auld, another Florida Gold Coast swimmer, was third in the 1,000-yard freestyle in 9:53.26 and fifth in the 500-yard freestyle in 4:49.76.

Senior Miguel Cancel, who trains summers at SOFLO, was third in the 200-yard individual medley in 1:49.68, fifth in the 200-yard butterfly in 1:48.36 and fifth in the 200-yard backstroke in 1:48.05.

Several of the Gators big guns including Olympians Kieran Smith and Bobby Finke did not compete.

Ten-time Olympic medalist and 15-time World Champion medalist Katie Ledecky, now training in Gainesville and working as a volunteer coach, competed in the 200- and 500-yard freestyle events.

Ledecky swam against the men in the 500 and finished in 4:30.55 in an exhibition, which would have easily won the women’s event. One of the most decorated swimmers in history also swam 1:42.80 in the 200.

The diving competition was held Thursday.

Florida heads next to Tallahassee to meet Florida State on Friday, Nov. 5.

The men’s team is ranked third and women ranked ninth in the College Swimming and Diving Coaches Association of America (CSCAA) preseason poll.

SOFLO Heads Saturday’s Boca Raton Swim Team Not So Scary Halloween Invite

BOCA RATON, October 28, 2021—Before the trick treating and candy, comes the racing at the Boca Raton Swim Team Not So Scary Halloween Invite Saturday at Boca Raton High School Aquatic Center.

South Florida Aquatic Club heads the small field with 56 swimmers (29 boys and 27 girls) in 189 individual events. At 6, Ellie Phan will be one of the youngest swimmers in the field.

There will be two sessions. Session One for 13-and-over swimmers begins at 9 a.m. and is expected to end around 10:09 a.m. The second session for 12-and-unders starts at 10:30 a.m. and projected to finish at 12:20 p.m.

The meet was capped at 160 athletes, 80 per session.

In addition to host Boca Raton Swim Team and SOFLO, other Florida Gold Coast teams competing are East Coast Aquatic Club, Tsunami Swim Team, Swim Fort Lauderdale and Plantation Swim Team.

St. Thomas Aquinas Sweeps District 11-3A Titles; Pembroke Pines Charter Runners-up

CORAL SPRINGS, October 28, 2021–St. Thomas Aquinas swept the team titles at the District 11-3A Swimming and Diving Championships Thursday at Coral Springs Aquatic Complex.

The girls’ team defended its’ title and won its third consecutive championship with 615 points. Pembroke Pines Charter was runner-up with 417 points.

St. Thomas boys team, third last year, won the team title with 488 points. Pembroke Pines Charter was also runner-up with 426 points.

Pembroke Pines Charter boys and girls teams are coached by South Florida Aquatic Club head age group coach Rose Lockie. She is coaching her final year of high school swimming.

St. Thomas Aquinas swept all three girls relays and had two individual winners, Mariann Catalasan and Julianne McCranie.

Catalasan, a sophomore, won her first district title in the 200-yard individual medley in 2:16.36. Last year she was third in 2:27.24. She was also second in the 100-yard breaststroke in 1:07.60 for the second consecutive year. Last year she finished in 1:15.48.

McCranie, also a sophomore, defended her title in the 100-yard backstroke in 1:02.11 and was second in the 100-yard butterfly in 1:00.59 in one of the more exciting races of the meet. Seminole Ridge sophomore Taylor Rizzi won in 1:00.31.

Pembroke Pines Charter finished runner-up in the girls’ 200-yard medley relay and 400-yard freestyle relay and won four individual events.

Senior Victoria Torres was a double winner for Pembroke Pines Charter. She won the 100-yard freestyle in 54.43 and 100-yard breaststroke in 1:07.60.

Jaguar teammates Kaitlyn Jorgensen won the 200-yard freestyle in 2:00.52 and Sarah Vazquez won the 500-yard freestyle in 5:26.57.

St. Thomas Aquinas boys’ team was just as impressive as the girls. The Raiders won the 200- and 400-yard freestyle relays and won three individual events.

The Raiders were led by freshman Alex Mansur, winning the 200-yard freestyle in 1:44.22 and 100-yard freestyle in 48.45, in another exciting race just ahead of Landon Emmons of Seminole Ridge in 48.86. Emmons won the 50-yard freestyle in 22.32.

Mansur also led a Raider sweep in the 200-yard freestyle in 1:44.22 followed by teammates Gabriel Tortola, a freshman, in 1:48.79 and Matthew Tan, a sophomore, in 1:50.62. Tortola also won the 500-yard freestyle in 4:50.90.

Everglades was led by the one-two punch of Javier Colmenares and Alejandro Mateus, both double winners.

Colmenares won the 200-yard individual medley in 2:05.79 and 100-yard breaststroke in 1:00.36.

Mateus won the 100-yard butterfly in 54.75 and 100-yard backstroke in 55.20.

Cypress Bay Girls, Doral Academy Boys Win District 11-4A Titles; SOFLO’s Alex Golding, Juan Mora Double Winners

HOLLYWOOD, October 26, 2021—Defending girls champion Cypress Bay and Doral Academy boys won the District 11-4A Swimming and Diving Championships Tuesday at South Broward Aquatic Center.

Cypress Bay, led by three relay wins and individual event winners Mariana Cote and Nicol Bellardi, dominated the nine-team girls field to win with 532 points. Doral Academy was a distant second with 292 and Cooper City, led by individual event winners diver Cara Barkey and Kate Kaplan, was third with 260.

Cote won the 500-yard freestyle in 5:06.74 and Bellardi won the 200-yard individual medley in 2:14.01.

Doral Academy, led by South Florida Aquatic Club’s Juan Mora, won the boys team title with 464 points.

Cooper City, led by SOFLO’s Alex Golding and diver Nicholas Dolton, was runner-up with 416 points. Defending boys champion Cypress Bay was third with 307.

Mora won the 100-yard butterfly in 51.72 and 100-yard breaststroke in 56.68. He was also a member of the winning 200-yard medley and 400-yard freestyle relay wins.

Golding won the 200-yard individual medley in 2:02.41 and 500-yard freestyle in 5:00.87. He was also a member of the third place 200-yard medley and 400-yard freestyle relays along with SOFLO teammates Chris Hau, Derek Hau and Javier Roman.

Roman was also second in the 500-yard freestyle in 5:01.10.

SOFLO’s Gabriella DeLuna of Cypress Bay was second in the 100-yard backstroke in 1:01.48.

SOFLO’s Sally Golding of Cooper City was third in the 200-yard individual medley in 2:14.65.

West Broward’s Dahlia Hirsh was third in the 100-yard breaststroke in 1:11.86.

Gulliver Prep Girls, Mater Lakes Boys Win District 12-2A Titles; SOFLO’s Agustin Rodriguez Double Winner

MIAMI, October 24, 2021–Host Gulliver Prep girls and Mater Lakes boys won the team titles Saturday at the District 12-2A Swimming and Diving Championships.

Gulliver Prep, led by freshman Giovanna Musiello, won the girls’ team title with 579 points. Mater Lakes was runner-up with 307 points. The team won every individual event and swept all three relays.

Mater Lakes, led by double winner Agustin Rodriguez, Anthony Robaina and Matthew Tarafa, all of South Florida Aquatic Club, knocked off Gulliver Prep by eight points to win the boys’ title for the first time.

Mater Lakes finished with 442 points. Gulliver Prep had 434 points.

Mater Lakes won the boys’ 200- and 400-yard freestyle relays which clinched the title.

Rodriguez anchored the 200-yard freestyle relay that won in 1:30.90 with Ronny Rueda, Anthony Robaina and Anthony Martinez.

Rodriguez also won the 200-yard freestyle in 1:46.00 and 500-yard freestyle in 4:52.92.

Robaina was also a member of the winning 400-yard freestyle relay that won in 3:24.50 with Ronny Rueda, Anthony Martinez and Tarafa.

Tarafa won the 100-yard freestyle in 48.60 and was also second in the 200-yard freestyle in 1:48.15. Robaina was second in the 100-yard breaststroke in 1:02.17.

Luca Lesentier of Mast Academy was a double winner in the 50-yard freestyle in 21.78 and 100-yard backstroke in 55.03. He also led off the winning 200-yard medley relay.

Musiello led Gulliver Prep with individual wins in the 200-yard individual medley in 2:13.53 and 100-yard backstroke in 59.72. She was also a member of the winning 200-yard medley and 400-yard freestyle relays.

Camila Saporta and Cassandra Kraft were also double winners: Saporta in the 200-yard freestyle in 2:03.10 and 500-yard freestyle in 5:25.60 and Kraft in the 50-yard freestyle in 25.03 and 100-yard freestyle in 57.30.

Top qualifiers advance into the Region 4-2A meet, hosted by Jensen Beach High School at Sailfish Splash Waterpark, Oct. 30, Saturday at 9 a.m.
