SOFLO Swimmers Come Up Big On Final Day Of FGC LCM BB Championships

MIAMI, July 11, 2022–South Florida Aquatic Club swimmers turned in one of their finest showings in meet history at the Florida Gold Coast Long Course Meters BB Championships at Ransom Everglades’ Ansin Aquatic Center.

On Sunday, the third and final day of the competitive meet, SOFLO dominated with top three finishes and time drops.

The boys were led by double winners Michael Barber, 10, and Abraham Penaloza, 14.

Barber won the 7-10 100-meter freestyle in a best time 1:20.02, dropping 3.26 and 50-meter backstroke in 44.10, another best time, dropping 3.68.

Penaloza won the 13-14 200-meter breaststroke in a best time 2:51.18, dropping 12.08 seconds. He also won the 100-meter butterfly in a best time 1:09.19, dropping 3.09.

SOFLO had the largest contingent with 54 swimmers (34 boys and 20 girls) in 223 individual events.

In addition to host Ransom Everglades and SOFLO, among other teams that competed were Gulliver, Metro Aquatics, Midtown Weston, Bravo Swimming, Blue Marlins, Eagle Aquatics, Cooper City Cyclones, North Miami Swimming and Azura.

SOFLO Captures Girls Team Title, Runner-up In Combined; Wilson, Dinehart Sisters, Relays Shine At Southern Zone South Sectional Championships

PLANTATION, July 10, 2022—South Florida Aquatic Club kicked off the championship season in style at the Southern Zone South Sectional Championships at Plantation Aquatic Complex.

On Sunday, SOFLO girls captured the girls team title and finished runner-up in the combined team standings.

SOFLO won the girls’ team title with 517.5 points ahead of Planet Swim Aquatics (428) and Azura Florida Aquatics (326.5).

Azura won the combined team title with 1,020 ahead of SOFLO with 833.5 and Academy Aquatic Club (599). Azura also won the boys’ team title with 693.5 and SOFLO was fourth (316).

Olivia Dinehart, 17, won her second event of the meet sweeping the breaststroke events. After winning the 100 in 1:12.79 earlier in the meet, she came back to win the 200 in 2:39.82 on the final night. She finished with 72 points.

Izzy Wilson, 15 was third in the 1500-meter freestyle in 17:49.12, her best finish of the meet.

Elena Dinehart, 17, was third in the 200-meter backstroke in 2:23.17. She finished with 52 points.

The Dinehart sisters were also members of the second place 400-meter medley relay team with Maddie Smutny and Natalie Gembicki that finished in 4:26.55. SOFLO’s B relay was sixth in 4:33.62 with Mallory Schleicher, Sophia Grubbs, Gabriella DeLuna and Michelle Marinheiro.

Roche, 22, was the top boys’ finisher placing fourth in the 200-meter backstroke in 2:13.73. He was also a member of the boys’ 400-meter medley relay that was fourth in 4:03.08 with Javier Colmenares, Wisthon Rendon and Alex Golding.

Erika Pelaez, 15, of Eagle Aquatics won two more events in the 100-meter freestyle in 57.93 and 200-meter backstroke in 2:19.85. The U.S. junior national team member won all six of her events. She finished with 120 of her girls team’s 136 points.

SOFLO had 29 swimmers (16 girls and 13 boys) compete in 131 individual events (77 girls and 54 boys) and 10 relays.
