Pompano Beach Sweeps District 11-2A Team Titles; SOFLO’s Sabrina Osorio, Enrique Rodriguez Win

STUART, October 30, 2022–Pompano Beach won the boys and girls team titles at the District 11-2A Swimming and Diving Championships at Sailfish Splash Waterpark.

In one of the closest finishes at a district meet, the Tornadoes edged Somerset by one point, 333-332, to win the girls title.

Pompano Beach, with two big relay wins and double winner Giuliano Brunetti, won the boys team title with 390 points. Riviera Beach Suncoast was second with 330.

South Florida Aquatic Club’s Sabrina Osorio and Enrique Rodriguez won individual titles for Somerset.

Osorio won the 100-yard breaststroke in 1:09.08 and was a member of the winning 200-yard medley relay with SOFLO teammates Natalia Sibug and Sofia Osorio that won in 1:55.27. She was also second in the 200 IM.

Rodriguez won the 100-yard backstroke in 53.89 ahead of Somerset and SOFLO teammate Aldo Zepeda in 54.73.

Lilia Blanco of Pompano Beach and Brynn Stoneburg of Jensen Beach were double winners.

Stoneburg won the 200-yard freestyle in 1:56.11 and 500-yard freestyle in 5:07.28.

Blanco won the 200-yard individual medley in 2:15.82 and 100-yard freestyle in 54.08. She also anchored the Tornadoes winning 400-yard freestyle relay.

Brunetti won the 200-yard individual medley in 1:57.85 and 500-yard freestyle in 4:43.23. He was also a member of the winning 200-yard and 400-yard freestyle relays.

Daniel Burg of American Heritage Plantation was a double winner in the 50-yard freestyle in 22.76 and 100-yard freestyle in 48.44.

The top qualifiers now advance to the Region 4-2 meet on Nov. 2 at 10 a.m. in Stuart. The qualifiers can be found at FHSAA.org.

South Florida Heat Girls, Pine Crest Boys Win District 11-1A Team Titles; N.C. State Commit Erika Pelaez Double Winner

FORT LAUDERDALE, October 30, 2022—South Florida Heat knocked off defending girls champion Pine Crest to capture the District 11-1A Swimming and Diving Championships Friday at NSU University School Aquatic Center.

South Florida Heat, led by double winner Erika Pelaez, won with 528 points. Pine Crest was runner-up with 424 and host NSU University School was third with 255.50. Pine Crest had won 32 girls district titles in the last 34 years.

Pine Crest boys, with two relay wins and three individual winners, won their 32nd title in 35 years. The Panthers finished with 562 points. South Florida Heat was second and Westminster Academy was third with 263.

Pelaez, who recently committed to North Carolina State, won the 100-yard butterfly in 54.35 and 100-yard backstroke in 53.50. She was also a member of the winning 200-yard medley and 200-yard freestyle relays.

Pelaez, a junior home schooler and U.S. junior national team member, announced her verbal commitment to the Wolfpack’s class of 2028 last week.

“I’m blessed to announce my verbal commitment to North Carolina State University!” Pelaez announced on social media. “Thank you to my family, Coach Adam, Coach Eric, and teammates for their guidance during this process. And a special thank you to the staff and team at NC state! So excited to become part of the Wolfpack!! Go Pack!”

Other South Florida Heat winners were Anais Gedeon and Alera Hurwitz tying in the 50-yard freestyle, Alanis Santiago in the 200-yard freestyle and Gioia Balzano in the 100-yard freestyle. The Heat also won the 200-yard medley and 200-yard freestyle relays.

University of Florida-bound Julia Podkoscielny led Pine Crest with a win in the 200-yard individual medley in 2:05.42 and second in the 100-yard backstroke in 55.79.

Other Pine Crest winners were Riley Botting in the 500-yard freestyle and Sara Lin in the 100-yard breaststroke and 400-yard freestyle relay.

Pine Crest’s Ava Andersen won the diving title with 452.05 points. The Panthers swept diving with Allen Levitis winning the boys with 547.65.

Pine Crest won the boys 200-yard and 400-yard freestyle relays. Colin Nealy won the 100-yard butterfly and Freddy Rosenthal won the 500-yard freestyle.

Kaii Winkler was a double winner for the Heat in the 100-yard freestyle in 44.57 and 200-yard freestyle in 1:39.18. Other Heat winners were Nikita Efimov in the 200 IM, Finn Winkler in the 100 backstroke and Giulian Martin in the 100 breaststroke. The Heat also won the 200-yard medley relay.

The only other district champion was sprinter Christian Clark of Westminster Academy in the 50 freestyle in 22.34.

The top district qualifiers now advance into the Region 4-1A meet on Nov. 4 at 10 a.m. at NSU University School.

St. Thomas Aquinas Sweeps Team Titles At Region 4-3A Swimming and Diving Championships; SOFLO’s Catalasan, Colmenares Win Region Titles


STUART, October 29, 2022–St. Thomas Aquinas girls and boys teams set themselves up nicely for a Top 3 finish at next week’s Class 3A state meet.

The Raiders dominated the Region 4-3A Swimming and Diving Championships at Sailfish Splash Waterpark by sweeping the boys and girls team titles.

The girls team swept all three relays and won seven individual events to total 505 points. South Fork was a distant second with 214.

The boys team won two relays and four individual events to finish with 466 points. Belen Jesuit was runner-up with 291.

Julianne McCranie and Anastasia Lutz were double winners for the Raiders. McCranie won the 100-yard butterfly in 56.36 and 100-yard backstroke in 58.06. Lutz won the 50-yard freestyle in 24.63 and 100-yard freestyle in 53.91. Teammate Jade Renaud won the 200-yard individual medley in 2:15.23.

Kaitlyn Raby was among St. Thomas winners, capturing the 1-meter diving title with 495.55 points.

Alex Mansur was a double winner for the Raider boys in the 200-yard freestyle in 1:42.52 and 100-yard freestyle in 47.03 and anchored the winning 200- and 400-yard freestyle relays.

Samuel Collingwood and Gabriel Tortola also won region titles for the Raiders in the 50-yard and 500-yard freestyles respectively.

South Florida Aquatic Club’s Mariann Catalasan, a junior at St. Thomas Aquinas, won the 100-yard breaststroke in 1:08.43 and was a member of the winning 200-yard medley relay.

SOFLO teammate Javier Colmenares of Everglades won the 200-yard individual medley in 1:55.81 and 100-yard breaststroke in 57.76. SOFLO and Everglades teammate Alejandro Mateus took second in the 100-yard butterfly and 100-yard backstroke.

Kaitlyn Jorgensen of Pembroke Pines Charter won the 200-yard freestyle in 1:56.06.

The FHSAA State 3A meet is Friday, Nov. 4 at Sailfish Splash Waterpark in Stuart. The state qualifiers and psych sheet will be posted at fhsaa.org after the completion of all region meets around the state.

Cypress Bay Girls, Braddock Boys Win Region 4-4A Team Titles; Flying Ls Divers Cavaretta, Boardman Win; Villamil, Kaplan, DeLuna Top SOFLO Finishers

BOCA RATON—Cypress Bay girls and Holmes Braddock boys won the team titles at the Region 4-4A Swimming and Diving Championships at Boca Raton Aquatic Center.

Cypress Bay, buoyed by three relay wins and double winner Mariana Cote, won the girls crown with 404.5 points. Fort Lauderdale was runner-up with 246.

Holmes Braddock, led by three relay wins and five individual wins including double winners George Gonzalez and Marcelo Mansur, captured the boys team title with 330 points followed by Miami Beach with 245 and Fort Lauderdale was third with 208.

For the second week in a row, Fort Lauderdale divers Sophia Cavaretta and James Boardman won the 1-meter springboard titles after winning last wek’s district titles.

Cavaretta, a freshman, won the girls title with 461.50 points for her second major title. The Flying Ls swept the top four girls spots. Boardman, a sophomore, won the boys title with 530.05.

South Florida Aquatic Club’s Ana Villamil, Carley Kaplan and Gabriella DeLuna were South Florida Aquatic Club’s top finishers.

Villamil of Cypress Bay was a member of two winning relays, the 200-yard medley relay (1:49.53) and 200-yard freestyle relay (1:40.77). She was also second in the 100-yard breaststroke in 1:05.93.

DeLuna was a member of the winning 200-yard medley relay. She was also third in the 100-yard butterfly in 58.09.

Kaplan of West Broward was third in the 50-yard freestyle in 24.74.

Fort Lauderdale’s Tawannah McLemore was a double winner in the 50-yard freestyle in 23.50, an All-American consideration time, and 100-yard freestyle in 52.41.

Cote was a double winner in the 200-yard freestyle in 1:53.54 and 500-yard freestyle in 4:57.81.

The only Broward boys winners were Fort Lauderdale’s Makar Goncharov in the 200-yard individual medley in 1:56.70 and Mason Green of Taravella in the 100-yard butterfly in 50.23.

The FHSAA State 4A meet is Saturday, Nov. 5 at Sailfish Splash Waterpark in Stuart. The state qualifiers and psych sheet will be posted at fhsaa.org after the completion of all region meets around the state.

Victoria Colmenares, Andres Gomez Lead SOFLO Swimmers In Final Session Of BRST Not So Scary Halloween Invite

BOCA RATON, October 23, 2022—Victoria Colmenares and Andres Gomez led South Florida Aquatic Club swimmers on Saturday at Session Two of the Boca Raton Swim Team’s Not So Scary Halloween Invite at Boca Raton High School Aquatic Center.

Colmenares, 8, following in the footsteps of her two older brothers, won the 25-yard butterfly in a best time 23.65, dropping 1.66 seconds. She was also third in the 25-yard breaststroke in 26.22, another best time dropping 1.37. She was also sixth in the 25-yard freestyle in 20.14, a best time with a 2.91 drop.

Gomez, 7, was second in the 25-yard freestyle in a best time 18.51, dropping 2.02. He was also third in the 25-yard butterfly in 23.84, another best time dropping 0.16 and fourth in the 25-yard backstroke in 23.05, a best time dropping 0.42.

SOFLO sent 34 swimmers to both sessions of the developmental meet.

In addition to host Boca Raton Swim Team and SOFLO, other teams that competed were FAST, Grandview Prep, Lake Lytal Lightning, PAQ, Pine Crest, Pompano Beach Piranhas, St. Andrew’s Aquatics, Swim Fort Lauderdale, Tsunami and one unattached swimmer, Harrold Simmonds of the Bahamas.

Dmitrii Berezin Leads SOFLO Swimmers In Session One Of BRST Not So Scary Halloween Invite

BOCA RATON, October 22, 2022—Dmitrii Berezin was top finisher for South Florida Aquatic Club Saturday at Session One of the Boca Raton Swim Team’s Not So Scary Halloween Invite at Boca Raton High School Aquatic Center.

Berezin, 13, finished second and had three other Top 14 finishes along with three best times.

Berezin finished second in the 100-yard backstroke in a lifetime best time of 1:08.54, dropping two seconds. He also dropped 22.74 seconds in the 100 butterfly and 0.24 in the 100 freestyle.

SOFLO teammates Alexander Rahman was fifth in the 100 breaststroke in 1:21.55 and seventh in the 100 freestyle in 1:00.31. Diego Reveron was sixth in the 100 backstroke in 1:12.19 and sixth in the 100 butterfly in 1:09.54.

SOFLO sent 34 swimmers to both sessions of the developmental meet.

St. Thomas Aquinas Sweeps District 11-3A Team Titles; SOFLO’s Catalasan, Vasquez, Colmenares, Mateus Win

CORAL SPRINGS, October 21, 2022—Defending champion St. Thomas Aquinas dominated the field to sweep the boys and girls team titles in the District 11-3A Swimming and Diving Championships Friday at Coral Springs Aquatic Complex.

The Raider girls swept all three relays and won seven individual events including diving to win the team title with an impressive 616 points among the 10-team field. Pembroke Pines Charter was second with 336.

The Raider boys also swept all three relays and won four individual events to win with 596 points ahead of Pembroke Pines Charter with 386. Seven boys teams competed.

South Florida Aquatic Club swimmers captured seven individual events and played a role on a winning relay.

Mariann Catalasan of St. Thomas Aquinas won the 200-yard individual medley in 2:17.76 and 100-yard breaststroke in 1:08.74. Catalasan was also a member of the winning 200-yard medley relay.

Sarah Vasquez, also of St. Thomas Aquinas, won the 500-yard freestyle in 5:20.85 and was second in 2:02.90.

Other St. Thomas Aquinas district champions were double winners Julianne McCranie in the 100-yard butterfly in 58.85 and 100-yard backstroke in 1:01.01. Anastasia Lutz won the 100-yard freestyle in 55.99.

SOFLO’s Javier Colmenares and Alejandro Mateus were double winners for Everglades.

Colmenares won the 200-yard individual medley in 2:00.00 and 100-yard breaststroke in 59.25.

Mateus won the 100-yard butterfly in 53.87 and 100-yard backstroke in 54.88.

Alex Mansur led the Raiders winning two events in the 200-yard freestyle in 1:44.12 and 100-yard freestyle in 47.84.

Other St. Thomas Aquinas winners were Samuel Collingwood in the 50-yard freestyle in 21.70 and Gabriel Tortola in the 500-yard freestyle in 4:51.83.

St. Thomas Aquinas’ Kaitlyn Raby won the 1-meter diving title with 460.70 points.

SOFLO’S Smutny, Schleicher Named USA Swimming Scholastic All-Americans

COLORADO SPRINGS, October 21, 2022—Maddie Smutny and Mallory Schleicher were among thirteen Florida Gold Coast swimmers named to the 2021-22 USA Swimming Scholastic All-American team.

Smutny and Schleicher are joined by Aitor Arrese-Igor, Aspen Gersper and Maximilian zum Tobel of St. Andrew’s, Riley Botting and Julia Podkoscielny of Pine Crest, Dylan Felt of Swim Fort Lauderdale, Giulian Martin of Hurricane Aquatics, Erika Pelaez of Eagle Aquatics, Dylan Smiley of Miami Country Day, Heidi Smithwick of Jupiter Dragons and Zarek Wilson of TS Aquatics.

The lists consist of 1,281 athletes, freshmen, sophomores, juniors and seniors who maintained a minimum 3.5 grade point average (GPA) and met any of the competition criteria during the qualifying period of September 1, 2021 – August 31, 2022.

The 595 girls and 686 boys were led by Katie Grimes (Las Vegas, Nevada/Sandpipers of Nevada), Erin Gemmell (Pontomac, Maryland/Nations Capital Swim Club) and Baylor Nelson (Huntersville, North Carolina/SwimMAC Carolina), the only athletes who earned perfect scores due to being an event champion and maintaining a 4.0 GPA.

Grimes earned her championship in the 10K at the Open Water National Championships, Gemmell in the 400 freestyle at the Phillips 66 National Championships and Nelson in the 200 IM at the 2021 U.S. Open.

Eleven athletes with disabilities earned the honor, marking the second year where athletes with disabilities can qualify for this program. Five open water athletes are also included among this year’s honorees.

North Carolina Swimming led all Local Swimming Committees (LSCs) in Scholastic All-America selections this year with 99 athletes. The top-two clubs with individual athletes receiving this honor, SwimMAC Carolina (28 athletes) and TAT Titans (24 athletes), both came from North Carolina.

Athletes by zone: Southern, 397; Eastern, 314; Western, 301 and Central, 268.

Athletes by grade: freshmen, 116; sophomores, 331; juniors, 468 and seniors 316.

All athletes will receive certificates and a bag tag. Three- and four-time honorees will receive a special gift. All awards will be shipped this fall.

SOFLO Swimmers Headed To BRST Not So Scary Halloween Invite This Weekend

BOCA RATON, October 21, 2022—South Florida Aquatic Club swimmers will get in some good racing Saturday at the Boca Raton Swim Team’s Not So Scary Halloween Invite at Boca Raton High School Aquatic Center.

The meet, for developmental swimmers, features 34 swimmers from SOFLO.

Two sessions are scheduled: Session One for the 13-18 swimmers from 9 a.m. to 10:02 a.m. with an 8 a.m. warmup; and Session Two for the 12-and-unders 11 a.m. to 1:36 p.m. with a 10 a.m. warmup.

In addition to host Boca Raton Swim Team and SOFLO, other teams competing are FAST, Grandview Prep, Lake Lytal Lightning, PAQ, Pine Crest, Pompano Beach Piranhas, St. Andrew’s Aquatics, Swim Fort Lauderdale, Tsunami and one unattached swimmer, Harrold Simmonds of the Bahamas.
