TYR OCTOBER GIRL SWIMMER OF THE MONTH: Isabella Callaway Coy

By Sharon Robb
PEMBROKE PINES, November 29, 2022–Isabella Callaway Coy is a self-starter when it comes to her motivation in swimming.

“I think I’m motivated to work hard,” Callaway Coy said. “I want to get on to Silver, that’s my goal right now.”

Callaway Coy, 13, a home schooler in seventh and eighth grade courses, is a member of the Senior Development Group. She is constantly striving to improve at practice and swim meets.

“Isabella is by far one of my most motivated swimmers,” said her coach Kenzy Green. “She’s committed to getting better and always tries to do everything right and pushes herself. She even asked me if she could move from the B group to the A group because she just really wants to get better.”

At her most recent meet, the Nov. 18-19 SOFLO Last Chance Meet at Academic Village Pool, Callaway Coy had five time drops in six events she competed in. She dropped 14.92 seconds in the 200-yard freestyle; 1.75 in the 100-yard breaststroke; 1.93 in the 200-yard individual medley; 3.39 in the 200-yard breaststroke; and 0.71 in the 500-yard freestyle.

Callaway Coy started swimming when she was 5. She first took Swim America lessons at Coral Springs Aquatic Center. She then joined her neighborhood recreational league team Margate Motion when she was 8. At 11 she took a long break when her family went on a cross country road trip. The family then went to Cape Canaveral where her father was deployed for the Air Force. Her family returned to Pembroke Pines where she started swimming with SOFLO in April.

“I was excited to get back to swimming,” Callaway Coy said. “At first it was hard since it was a USA Swimming team. Then it got easier and now I really love it.”

Callaway Coy loves being around her teammates and coaches.

“I like going to see my friends and swimming with them and seeing myself improve,” she said. “I’d like to thank Coach George, Coach Jack and Coach Kenzy. They help me a lot.

“I am competitive. I like competing and it relaxes my mind.”

Callaway Coy is currently training for the Dec. 16-18 Holiday Champs at Sunrise which she has qualified for. She is close to qualifying for the Dec. 8-11 Winter Championships at Plantation.

During her break from swimming, Callaway Coy competed in track and field for the South Florida Heat. She ran the half mile, mile and two-mile relay which helped her get into shape for swimming. She also likes to do art (painting and drawing) and playing guitar. “Since I home school it gives me time to do lots of things,” Callaway Coy said.

Her goals for the future include moving up the ladder of the various SOFLO team groups, swimming in high school and earning a college scholarship.

“She’s always excited to see the practice and finds the good things in every tough practice instead of hyperfocusing on the pain and difficulty of a set,” Green said. “She’s a great team player and lifts those around her up with her positive attitude. I’m excited to see where the rest of the year takes her.”

Callaway Coy is the second member of her family to earn TYR Swimmer of the Month honors. Her brother Lincoln was the September TYR Boy Swimmer of the Month.

Cristina Calloway Coy, a masters swimmer and mother of three swimmers, loves having all her kids in one sport.

“I think about parents that are going and dropping one off to gymnastics, another at soccer and another at swimming and I think how do you survive that?” she said.

“I am very glad that all three of my kids like swimming and I do, too. It makes it easy we all do one thing. I love watching them swim, practice, dive off the blocks and see them getting better and better. With dedication in this sport and good coaching, kids can achieve their goals and that’s encouraging to see.

“This is something you can do until you’re 95, it’s something you can do to stay healthy,” Cristina added. “It sets the bar for health whether you keep competing or not.”

Each TYR Swimmer of the Month receives a free TYR backpack. Callaway Coy joins SOFLO teammates Jianna Amores (September), Carolina Carrera (August), Lydia Smutny (July), Amber Connor (June), Eva Ortiz (May), Sally Golding (April), Natalie Gembicki (March), Sofia Lugo (February) and Valentina Remmele (January) as 2022 Swimmers of the Month.

SOFLO sponsor TYR is a USA manufacturer of recreational and competitive swimwear, caps, goggles, triathlon gear and accessories and one of the nation’s top companies.

TYR, created by athletes, is named for the Norse god of warriors in Germanic mythology. Among its female-sponsored athletes are ESPY Sportswoman of the Year Katie Ledecky, 2020 Olympians Simone Manuel, Lilly King, Annie Lazor, Ashley Twichell and other elite swimmers Melanie Margalis, Molly Hannis and Kelsi Dahlia.

SOFLO’s Julio Horrego Among Field For Toyota U.S. Open Swimming Championships

By Sharon Robb
GREENSBORO, N.C., November 28, 2022—Julio Horrego of South Florida Aquatic Club will compete in the Toyota U.S. Open Swimming Championships at Greensboro Aquatic Center scheduled for Wednesday through Saturday.

Horrego is seeded fifth in the 100 breaststroke in 1:01.18. Ireland’s Darragh Greene is seeded first in 59.76 followed by Bulgarian national record holder Lyubomir Epitropov of University of Tennessee, 1:00.32; AJ Pouch of Virginia Tech, 1:00.85; and Reid Mikuta of Auburn University, 1:00.92.

Swimming Notebook: Boca Raton Swim Team Hosts Swim Clinic With Olympian Ryan Lochte; Dylan Carter Earns FINA World Cup Title; Gators Dominate Golden Goggles

By Sharon Robb
BOCA RATON, November 27, 2022—Twelve-time Olympic medalist Ryan Lochte, one of the most decorated swimmers and entertaining clinicians, will hold a swim clinic on Saturday, December 17th at Boca Raton High School’s Aquatic Center.

The world record holder will be joined by longtime coach Steve Lochte, his father. Lochte has more than four decades of coaching experience from age groupers and collegians to Olympians. Lochte swam for his father’s club as a child and represented them nationally as an adult several times.

Along with Natalie Coughlin, Dara Torres, and Jenny Thompson, the 38-year-old Lochte is the second-most decorated swimmer in Olympic history measured by total number of medals, behind only Michael Phelps. Lochte’s seven individual Olympic medals rank second in history in men’s swimming (again to Phelps), tied for second among all Olympic swimmers.

The swim clinic is for swimmers, parents and coaches. The highlights include each stroke, drill and demonstrations with time for questions and answers, photos and autographs.

The first session for 12-and-unders is 9 a.m.-noon and second session for 13-and-overs, 1-4 p.m. Space is limited. The price is $150 per athlete. The aquatic center is located at 1501 NW 15th Court. Those interested may sign up at http://www.legacyswimming.com.

DYLAN CARTER SHINES
Former American Heritage Plantation swimmer Dylan Carter, Trinidad and Tobago’s two-time Olympian, earned the overall FINA Swimming World Cup men’s title after the final short course meet in Indianapolis.

Carter, 26, won the overall World Cup title with nine wins across three weeks in the 50-meter butterfly, backstroke and freestyle finals. Carter never lost a 50-meter final totaling three triple crowns

Carter’s success comes on the heels of a good summer at the World Championships in June where he was fourth in the 50 butterfly. At the Commonwealth Games in July, he was fourth in the butterfly and fourth in the 50 freestyle.

“I came home this summer after World Champs and Commonwealth Games and I went to my local gym and the amount of people that came up to me to ask if I was going to retire I can’t count on one hand,” Carter said.

“I had a great summer. I swam some good times but people were like, ‘this guy is done and washed up. He’s never going to break through.’ And that really drove me and made me really mad. I think that’s part of the results you see now.”

Carter has switched his focus on events. Carter had been more known as a 200 freestyle swimmer and made his Olympic debut in 2016 in the 100 freestyle, where he was 23rd. It’s now been the 50s where he has been successful recently.

“I was a main 200 guy until I was 23 or 24,” Carter said. “I always wanted to have a bit of a second career in just the 50s because I felt like I had potential. I didn’t know how much potential but I knew I had a good 50 fly and it was always good for a 200 guy, so I wanted to put it all there and see where I could go and I think that’s why I’m seeing some good times because I’ve never trained for them up until now.”

Carter is training at home in Trinidad with coach Dexter Browne. He set best times in both the 50 backstroke and 50 butterfly at the Indianapolis World Cup, ranking him 11th and 17th all-time respectively. His 50 butterfly in Indianapolis was only 0.01 off his best time, where he is fourth on the all-time list.

Carter is happy swimming, not because his events are shorter but because he feels that he is finally reaching his true potential. And making money through the World Cups has also helped.

“It’s fun, a lot more fun than training for the 200,” Carter said of his reborn life as a sprinter. “I think that swimming in a way that is sustainable mentally and you’re happy, that’s when you can see your career stretch out in front of you. I know it’s not always happy days like winning and best times, but the 50s and being creative with it are really fun and really rewarding.”

Carter also knows how much his win means to Trinidad and Tobago, a nation with only one Olympic medal in swimming history.

“I don’t think we ever won it. I know George (Bovell) came close,” Carter said. “At world champs or Olympics, it’s who is the best on that day. The World Cup is who is the best over an extended period of time. It’s really a phenomenal feat and not just fast swimming but endurance and mental endurance. It is a big step for our sport and the Caribbean.”

GATORS DOMINATE GOLDEN GOGGLES

The University of Florida Gators dominated the recent 2022 Golden Goggle Awards at the New York Marriott Marquis, winning six awards (five individual, one relay).

The 18th edition of the awards ceremony began in 2004 to recognize the USA’s most accomplished swimmers. This year’s awards were mostly based on performances from the 2022 World Championships in Budapest, Hungary.

Bobby Finke was named the 2022 Male Athlete of the Year, winning the award for the first time. Finke also won the 2022 Race of the Year for his American record-breaking 800 freestyle at the World Championships back in June with a 7:39.36. The Clearwater native now has won the Male Race of the Year in back-to-back years after pocketed the 2021 Male Race of the Year last year for his comeback win in the 800 freestyle to win gold at the Tokyo Olympics. Finke also broke the American record in the 1500 freestyle last June.

Volunteer coach Katie Ledecky won three Golden Goggle awards, topping her decorated night with the 2022 Female Athlete of the Year. This is the eighth time Ledecky has won the award (2013, 2014, 2015, 2016, 2017, 2018, 2021, and 2022), passing Michael Phelps for the most Golden Goggle awards in history. Ledecky won four gold medals at the World Championships in Budapest, winning gold in the 800 free, a race that won her the Race of the Year award tonight, and in the 4×200 freestyle, winning Relay of the Year award alongside 2023 Gator signee Bella Sims. Ledecky also took gold in the 1500 freestyle and 400 freestyle in Budapest.

Head coach Anthony Nesty earned the 2022 Coach of the Year Award. He was head coach in Budapest, coaching multiple medal winners including Finke, Ledecky, Caeleb Dressel and Trey Freeman.

Jacksonville Bolles Sweeps State 1A Team Titles; SOFLO’s Olivia Dinehart Repeats As State Champion; Kaii Winkler Breaks NAG Record

By Sharon Robb
STUART, November 18, 2022–Cutler Bay High School senior Olivia Dinehart left a lasting impression Friday night at the FHSAA State 1A Swimming and Diving Championship at Sailfish Splash Waterpark and Aquatics Center.

The South Florida Aquatic Club and Auburn-bound swimmer defended her title in the 100-yard breaststroke in a best time 1:01.60, an automatic All-American time with a 0.88 time drop. Last year she won in 1:02.18.

Dinehart was also sixth in the 200-yard individual medley in 2:04.26 and was a member of the sixth place 200-yard medley and seventh place 400-yard freestyle relay teams.

Jacksonville Bolles swept the boys and girls team titles and continued its unmatched winning streaks.

Bolles topped a field of 40 boys teams with 546 points. South Florida Heat was runnerup with 182 points followed by St. Andrew’s (172.5) and Pine Crest (162).

Bolles, with only one relay win but plenty of depth, won the girls title among a 43-team field with 374 points. King’s Academy was second with 237 and St. Andrew’s was third with 229 points.

Bolles has won every boys state championship since 1988 and every girls title since 1991, and with decades of tradition on the line, Bolles kept the streak going. Bolles has now won a record 35 boys titles and 32 girls titles to continue as the state’s all-time high school swimming dynasty.

Julia Podkoscielny of Pine Crest finished her illustrious high school career with a state title in the 200-yard individual medley in 1:58.81, a time drop of 4.48 seconds and automatic All-American time. The University of Florida-bound swimmer finished with six individual state titles (10 overall including four relays). She was also second in the 100 backstroke in 54.56.

The only other individual event Broward state champion was double winner Erika Pelaez of South Florida Heat in the 100-yard butterfly in 52.12 and 100-yard backstroke in 52.30, both automatic All-American times. The North Carolina State commit also led off the state champion 400-yard freestyle relay that won in 3:24.30 with teammates Alanis Santiago, Mia Patton and Gioia Balzano.

Top-seeded Bolles (1:25.12) was disqualified in the boys’ 200-yard freestyle relay final opening the door for second-seeded Pine Crest (1:27.92) to rise to the occasion and capture the state title in 1:26.56 with Colin Nealy (21.56), Lucas Opperman (21.57), Kingsley Bailey (21.46) and Roman Ferrara (21.97). The relay dropped 1.13 seconds off its entry time of 1:27.69.

Kaii Winkler, 16, of South Florida Heat was a double winner in the boys’ 200-yard freestyle in 1:34.18, a time drop of 5.09 seconds, breaking Caeleb Dressel’s state high school record of 1:34.69. He also won the 100-yard freestyle in 42.52, his first sub-43 breaking the 15-16 national age group record of Ryan Hoffer’s 42.67 set in 2014 and breaking Ryan Murphy’s state high school record of 42.95. His splits were 20.57 and 21.95. He also split 18.98 on his freestyle split to open the meet in the 200-yard medley relay.

Pine Crest boys diving was shut out of a state title after dominating the event for six consecutive years by Kevin Mendez, one of the state’s most decorated athletes. Pine Crest’s Allen Levitis finished second with 476.75 points behind Lake Highland Prep’s Jack Bessire with 515.45.

It was evident the week delay imposed by the FHSAA because of Hurricane Nicole affected several athletes while a handful were out of the country on planned field trips including Pine Crest top diver Ava Andersen. The host meet facility was not damaged and teams were able to travel last weekend, the meet’s original date.

The FHSAA State 2A concludes the high school season on Saturday with prelims and finals. SOFLO swimmers competing are: Natalia Sibug, Sofia Hernandez, Sofia Osorio, Sabrina Osorio, Sebastian Fernandez, Felix Gonzalez, Giorgio Rusconi, Enrique Rodriguez, Aldo Zepeda and Carlos Salas.

For the TYR SOFLO Last Chance meet, prelims are Friday at 5:30 p.m. and Saturday at 8:30 a.m. The finals are Saturday at 5:30 p.m. Several swimmers will be attempting to get qualifying times for upcoming meets including Winter Junior Nationals and Winter Championships.

The Holiday Classic for 8-and-unders and 10-and-unders begin Saturday at 1:30 p.m. with timed finals.

Several swimmers are missing because of the FHSAA State 1A and 2A meets being moved to this weekend by the FHSAA after Hurricane Nicole, even though the facility in Stuart was not damaged and all high school teams were able to travel and were tapered for last weekend, the original dates.

Among SOFLO top seeds are:

The meet is hosted by SOFLO and Comets Swim Team Booster Club. Admission is $5 per session. Heat sheets are available on Meet Mobile and http://www.soflomeets.info/holiday classic

TYR SEPTEMBER GIRL SWIMMER OF THE MONTH: Jianna Amores

By Sharon Robb
PEMBROKE PINES, November 10, 2022–Jianna Amores is happy she chose swimming.

Amores, 12, a seventh grade home schooler competed in gymnastics, volleyball, tennis, soccer and basketball and did dance and tap dance classes, but decided she wanted to focus on one sport.

“I’m glad I did,” Amores said. “I wanted to focus and get good at one sport. Gymnastics was really hard and I really like swimming. I gave up everything for swimming.”

Amores started swimming at 4 and then left the sport to try gymnastics. She returned to swimming two years ago and is happy she did. She already has her JO cut in the 100 butterfly.

“I wanted to try swimming out again,” she said. “SOFLO is fun and all the meets are good. I’ve made a lot of friends and Coach Issy is a great coach.”

Amores trains with head age group coach Isidro (Issy) Planell and Mako Sharks.

“I often speak with the Mako Sharks about leadership and how a true leader does not tell people what to do, but sets the standard for everyone in the room,” Coach Issy said. “Jia is a great worker simply put. Her results are just a tiny glimpse into the tremendous amount of work she puts in on a daily basis.

“She does not hesitate whenever I raise the bar nor does she challenge it. I give her a challenge and she tries to beat it always.

“She already had the JO cut in the butterfly but going a best time early in the season is never something to complain about.”

Coach Issy also coached her older siblings, Jaden, 15, and Jenesys, 13. “It’s safe to say she knew what was going to be expected of her in Makos from their experience,” Coach Issy said.

Amores said it is an advantage of following in her siblings’ foot steps.

“Being the youngest, they paved the way for me,” Amores said. “I learn from them. It’s a big advantage having an older brother and sister. I compare times when they were younger and I beat Jaden when he was 12 by one second in the 100 fly. They do support me at meets when they can even though they are 13-and-up and I am 12- and-under.”

Amores trains six days a week. She said the sport has helped her manage her time for school and watching TV. She hopes to swim in high school and earn a college scholarship.

“I like the training,” Amores said. “It is worth the time and sacrifice. I am happy to be there. I am having fun with my friends. I like competing against them and racing them. I am super competitive. I’ve always been so competitive. It helps me get better.”

Each TYR Swimmer of the Month receives a free TYR backpack. Amores joins SOFLO teammates Carolina Carrera (August), Lydia Smutny (July), Amber Connor (June), Eva Ortiz (May), Sally Golding (April), Natalie Gembicki (March), Sofia Lugo (February) and Valentina Remmele (January) as 2022 Swimmers of the Month.
