Hartley Pitters-Hinds, Alexis Christensen Lead SOFLO In Fourth Session On Final Day Of GCST Winter Open

FORT MYERS, January 21, 2019—It was girl power for South Florida Aquatic Club during Session Four of the Gulf Coast Swim Team Winter Open Sunday at FGCU Aquatics Center.

Hartley Pitters-Hinds, 13, was top finisher placing third in the 50-yard breaststroke in a best time 38.20, dropping 3.54 seconds off her previous best. It was her best finish during the three-day meet. She had two other Top 20 finishes on the final day. She finished with six points in high point.

Alexis Christensen, 13, was ninth in the 200-yard breaststroke in 2:51.56. She had three other Top 17 finishes. She finished with three points.

SOFLO had 21 swimmers (13 girls and eight boys) compete in 127 individual events and three girls teams in two relay events.

The field was comprised mostly of teams from Central and North Florida in the Florida Swimming Association. Pompano Beach Piranhas, Heritage Aquatics and SOFLO are the only Florida Gold Coast teams.

Samuel Bullen Leads SOFLO In Second Session On Day Two Of GCST Winter Open

FORT MYERS, January 20, 2019—Samuel Bullen was the top finisher for South Florida Aquatic Club during Session Two of the Gulf Coast Swim Team Winter Open Saturday at FGCU Aquatics Center.

Bullen, 13, was third in the 13-14 50-yard backstroke in 31.35. He was also tenth in the 100-yard breaststroke in 1:12.74 and 22nd in the 100-yard freestyle in 59.67. Bullen has six points in high point.

Alexis Christensen, 13, was the top girls finisher, placing sixth in the 50-yard backstroke in 33.25. She was also tenth in the 50-yard butterfly in 33.26; 13th in the 100-yard breaststroke in 1:19.76 and 14th in the 400-yard individual medley in 5:08.38. She has three points in high point.

Teammate Natalia Sibug, 12, was eighth in the 1,650-yard freestyle in 19:57.26. She has one point in high point.

The meet concludes Sunday with two sessions.

SOFLO has 21 swimmers (13 girls and eight boys) competing in 127 individual events and three girls teams in two relay events.

The field is comprised mostly of teams from Central and North Florida in the Florida Swimming Association. Pompano Beach Piranhas, Heritage Aquatics and SOFLO are the only Florida Gold Coast teams.

Lin, Kohanyi Win For Florida Gold Coast All-Stars On Day Two Of Southern Zones

MIDLAND, Tex., August 1, 2018—Sara Lin and Aiden Kohanyi won individual events Wednesday on Day Two of the Southern Zones Age Group Championships at FMH Foundation Natatorium.

Sara Lin, 12, of Pine Crest Swimming won the 50-meter breaststroke in 34.82 with a time drop of 0.76.

Aiden Kohanyi, 13, of TS Aquatics won the 13-14 200-meter breaststroke in 2:28.77 with a time drop of 1.94.

Valerie Vank, 12, and Alexis Christensen, 12, were South Florida Aquatic Club’s top finishers. Vank was 11th in the 50-meter breaststroke in 37.92 and Christensen placed 14th in the 200-meter freestyle in 2:18.57.

Vank anchored the fifth-place 11-12 400-meter medley relay that finished in 4:45.15 with other relay members Julianne McCranie, Sara Lin and Bella Egizi.

Florida Gold Coast 13-14 boys were third in the 400-meter medley relay in 4:06.29 with Hudson Bishop, Aiden Kohanyi, Matthew Tarafa and Nicolas Gallego.

For the second day in a row, Florida Swimming leads the combined (482) and girls (231). Southeastern leads the boys (205). Florida Gold Coast is sixth in combined (134), seventh in boys (56) and sixth in girls (60).

The meet continues Thursday with prelims and finals.

Four SOFLO Swimmers Selected For FGC Age Group Zone Team

PEMBROKE PINES, July 20, 2018—South Florida Aquatic Club had four talented swimmers selected for the Florida Gold Coast Age Group Zone Team.

Alexis Christensen, Mallory Schleicher, Valerie Vank and Christian Tijero, all currently competing in this weekend’s FGC Junior Olympics in Stuart, will compete along with other 11-14 year olds in the Southern Zone Age Group Swim Meet July 31-August 5 at COM Aquatic Center, in Midland, Texas.

SOFLO Remains In Lead On Day Two Of FGC Long Course Junior Olympics

STUART, July 20, 2018—Defending champion South Florida Aquatic Club remained in the lead after Day Two of the Florida Gold Coast Long Course Junior Olympic Championship Friday at Sailfish Splash Water Park.

SOFLO leads the combined team standings with 226.5 points followed by FAST with 168. Pine Crest leads the girls team stanings with 119 followed by SOFLO with 107. FAST leads the boys with 126 points and SOFLO is second with 119.5.

SOFLO’s Alexis Christensen and Mallory Schleicher continued their dominance in the distance events. After winning the mile, the duo came back and won their age group titles in the 400-meter freestyle.

Christensen, 12, won in a best time 4:43.60 with a time drop of 11.98. She has 21 points for high point.

Schleicher, 14, also won in a best time 4:30.08 with a time drop of 4.22. She has 24 points.

Javier Colmenares led the boys team winning the 100-meter breaststroke in a best time 1:18.88 with an impressive time drop of 7.81.

Colmenares was also a member of the winning 11-12 400-meter freestyle relay in 4:17.29 with teammates Diego Nazario-Vazquez, Alessandro Pereira and Christian Tijero.

Other top three finishers were:

Valerie Vank was second in the 100-meter breaststroke in a best time 1:18.92, with a time drop of 2.53 seconds.

Mariana Pinto was second in the 400-meter freestyle in a best time 5:17.86 with a time drop of 9.73.

Schleicher was also third in the 200-meter backstroke in a best time 2:27.84, dropping 3.60 seconds.

Fiorella Di Salvo was third in the 100-meter breaststroke in a best time 1:35.10 with a time of 2.55 seconds.

Diego Nazario-Vazquez was third in the 50-meter freestyle in a best time 28.38 with a time drop of 1.16.

The girls’ 400-meter freestyle relay of Alexis Christensen, Kaitlyn Barrios, Ava Kuznik and Valerie Vank was third in 4:26.76.

The boys’ 800-meter freestyle relay of Brennan Binder, Enrique Rodriguez, Javier Roman and Juan Colmenares was third in 8:28.58.

The four-day meet continues Saturday with prelims at 9 a.m. and finals at 6 p.m.

SOFLO is going after its ninth consecutive JO long course team title and tenth overall in club history. SOFLO has also won back-to-back short and long course JO titles five times.

It is the third time the meet, that features 31 teams, is being co-hosted by FGC clubs Martin County Swimming and North Palm Beach Swim Club at Sailfish Splash Water Park, site of the annual FHSAA State High School Swimming and Diving meet for the past five years.

Defending Champion SOFLO Off To Good Start At FGC Long Course Junior Olympics

STUART, July 19, 2018—Alexis Christensen, Mallory Schleicher and Christian Tijero got South Florida Aquatic Club off to a good start Thursday at the Florida Gold Coast Long Course Junior Olympic Championship at Sailfish Splash Water Park.

SOFLO swimmers won three of the four individual mile races on opening night.

Christensen, 12, won the 11-12 1500-meter freestyle in a best time 18:34.63. She shaved 58.25 off her previous best mile time of 19:32.88 and broke 19 minutes for the first time.

Schleicher, 14, won the 13-14 1500-meter freestyle in 17:50.04, also a best time dropping 14.40 off her previous time of 18:04.44. It was the first time Schleicher cracked 18-minutes in the mile.

In the boys’ competition, Christian Tijero, 12, won the 11-12 1500-meter freestyle in a best time 18:21.43, bettering his previous best of 19:29.50, dropping 1:08.07 and cracking 19 minutes for the first time in his young career.

SOFLO teammate Alessandro Pereira, 11, was sixth in the mile in 19:07.81, also a best time dropping 38.32 from his previous best of 19:46.13.

Schleicher, Christensen and Tijero were recently named to the FGC age group zone team. They will represent SOFLO and FGC at the July 31-Aug. 5 Southern Age Group Swimming Championships at COM Aquatic Center in Midland, Tex.

The four-day meet continues Friday with prelims at 9 a.m. and finals at 6 p.m.

Defending Champion SOFLO Heads Field For This Week’s FGC Long Course Junior Olympics

STUART, July 18, 2018—South Florida Aquatic Club will try and build on its winning tradition and legacy at this week’s Florida Gold Coast Long Course Junior Olympics.

The four-day meet begins Thursday at Sailfish Splash Water Park.

SOFLO is going after its ninth consecutive JO long course team title and tenth overall in club history. SOFLO has also won back-to-back short and long course JO titles five times.

In March, SOFLO won the FGC 14&Under Short Course JOs for a record eighth consecutive and ninth overall in the club’s 18-year history.

SOFLO, defending champion in combined and boys team titles, has qualified 58 individual swimmers in 329 events. SOFLO has also entered 40 relay teams in 22 relay events where it will rely on its depth to pick up points against talented but less deep FGC teams.

Last year SOFLO won the combined team title with 661 points, nearly 200 points ahead of runner-up Gulliver Swimming. SOFLO boys won with 442, more than double Gulliver with 202. Gulliver won the girls title with 289. SOFLO girls were fourth with 219.

Competing in their final JO long course meet are 14-year-olds Sarah Acevedo, Brennan Binder, Jenna Marie Brames, Juan Colmenares, Mark Andre De Gracia, Alex Golding, Sally Golding, Manuel Melendez, Yannai Michael, Sara Quintero, Anthony Robaina, Moises Rodriguez, Javier Roman, Mallory Schleicher and Emma Twombly.

The younger contingent is led by Kaitlyn Barrios, 12, 11 events; Javier Colmenares, 12, 11 events; Fiorella Di Salvo, 10, nine events; Zackary Harris, 13, 10 events; Derek Hau, 10, nine events; Jonathan Lozano, 11, 11 events; Diego Nazario-Vazquez, 12, 11 events; Alessandro Pereira, 11, events; Lucas Porven, 12, 11 events; Enrique Rodriguez, 13, 11 events; Christian Tijero, 12, 11 events; Ava Kuznik, 12, 10 events; and Valerie Vank, 12, 11 events.

ELSEWHERE: ATKINSON REPRESENTS JAMAICA IN CAC Games

Four-time Olympian Alia Atkinson will be among Jamaica’s contingent of 186 competing athletes in the 23rd Central American and Caribbean (CAC) Games that will take place in Barranquilla, Colombia Thursday through August 3.

The CAC Games, which are the oldest continuing games in the region, were first held in Mexico in 1926 and Jamaica had the privilege of hosting the games in 1962 at the National Stadium in Kingston.

Atkinson will not be alone this time in representing in swimming. She will be joined by Keanan Dols, Luke Gunning, Michael Gunning, Laura Lim-Sang, Emily McDonald, and Bryanna Renaurt. Atkinson is among four co-captains of the team.

Yona Knight Wisdom, who has represented Jamaica at the Olympic Games and Commonwealth Games in diving will have company in Pele Julien. Both men will competed in the 1- and 3-meter springboard.

The sports that will be contested are athletics, badminton, basketball, boxing, diving, fencing, football, hockey, rugby, shooting, squash, swimming, beach volleyball, with additions, karate, water polo and wrestling.
