Cypress Bay Lightning Sweeps BCAA Team Titles; Cooper City’s Kathleen Golding Breaks Two BCAA Records

By Sharon Robb

PLANTATION, OCTOBER 7, 2017—Before the season started, Cypress Bay veteran swim coach John Spire said he could have the best girls team since 2006 when it finished sixth at the State 4A meet. He just may be right.

And the boys team isn’t too shabby either.

With both talent and depth, which can take a high school team a long way during the championship season, Cypress Bay looked impressive Saturday night sweeping the boys and girls team titles at the Broward County Athletic Association Swimming and Diving Championship.

The Lightning, led by freshman sensation Paige Lane, winner in the 200-yard freestyle and third in the 100-yard freestyle; Gaby Banks, winner in the 50-yard freestyle; and winning 400-yard freestyle relay with Lane, Elizabeth Riley, Ulrike Tovilla and Banks, the girls team won with 554 points, the only team, boys or girls, to crack the 500-point barrier.

2015 defending girls champion St. Thomas Aquinas was second with 426 and much-improved Cooper City was third with 334, edging Fort Lauderdale by two points (332).

Cypress Bay, the 2015 defending boys champion, defended its title with 419 points ahead of Fort Lauderdale with 345 and St. Thomas Aquinas was third with 321.

The Lightning was led by individual winner Diego Machado in the 200-yard freestyle, also second in the 100-yard butterfly. Machado was swimming on very little sleep after returning to the U.S. Saturday morning at 4 a.m. after competing in the Junior South American Youth Games in Santiago, Chile.

The 2016 BCAA meet was cancelled because of Hurricane Matthew. This season’s swimmers, despite missing more than a week of training because of Hurricane Irma, were excited to compete for BCAA bragging rights and gauge their training for the upcoming district, region and state meets.

Cooper City junior Kathleen Golding, who as a freshman won the 200-yard individual medley (2:06.86) and 100-yard butterfly (56.80, BCAA record) at the BCAA meet, was outstanding among the girls field breaking two more BCAA records.

Golding, the only Florida Gold Coast swimmer recently selected for USA Swimming’s National Select Camp at the Olympic Training Center in Colorado Springs, set records in the 200-yard individual medley and 100-yard freestyle.

Golding led from wire-to-wire in the 200-yard medley relay to finish in 2:02.93 ahead of her freshman teammate and sister Molly Golding in 2:13.44. She broke the 2009 record of 2:03.64 set by Lindsey McKnight of Douglas.

Golding also broke the 100-yard freestyle record in 51.14. The previous mark of 52.10 was held by Tiffany Oliver of Cypress Bay. Oliver trained at the same South Florida Aquatic Club that Golding now trains at. Oliver went on to Florida State and successfully passed her bar exam and recently was sworn into the Florida Bar.

Oliver took to Facebook late Saturday night after learning her record was broken.

“Congratulations Kathleen Golding for breaking my 8-year-old Broward County High School record in the 100-freestyle,” Oliver wrote. “Must be one helluva swimmer.”

Golding finished with 48 points and tied Fort Lauderdale’s Giulia Guerre-Montes for high point honors.

At the mid-season point, Golding was pleased with her record swims and also happy the select camp will not interfere with her high school championship season.

“Those were two records I wasn’t really expecting at all,” Golding said. “I thought I could get close to the records, I knew that it was possible but because of the hurricane we have been training hard to catch up to the time lost. I didn’t think I would go best times, untaper and unshaved. I just wanted to see what I could.

“I am so happy for Cooper City, it’s exciting to have a team there,” Golding said. “The best part is they help me swim well. We talk and have fun.”

The only other girls’ double winner was Giulia Guerre Montes of Fort Lauderdale in the 500-yard freestyle and 100-yard backstroke.

Fort Lauderdale also had a boys’ double winner. Kevin De Grijze won the 200-yard individual medley in 1:55.03 and 100-yard breaststroke in 1:00.33. He finished with 48 points and tied for high point award with Douglas sprinter Nicholas Dworet also a double winner in the 50- and 100-yard freestyles.

Douglas swept the 1-meter springboard diving titles.

Connor Dietrich won the boys with 206.55 points. Tyler Flowers of Cooper City was runner-up with 193.40. Six divers competed with four no-shows. Olivia Rosen won the girls title with 232.45 points ahead of Cooper City’s Courtney Russo with 225.95.

Several swimmers did not compete because of Saturdays SATs college placement testing.

ELSEWHERE

Gulf Coast High School captured its eighth Collier County Athletic Conference overall title on Saturday. A scoring error of calculating points for only top five instead of top 16 was discovered after Barron Collier was initially announced the winner. Gulf Coast girls finished with 628 followed by Barron Collier with 451 and Naples with 344. Barron Collier won the boys with 511 and Gulf Coast was runner-up with 450.

Broward, Miami-Dade Schools Re-Open Monday; High School Swim Meets Likely to Resume This Week

By Sharon Robb

September 17, 2017—Still in the midst of recovery and repairs after Hurricane Irma, Broward County and Miami-Dade public schools are scheduled to re-open on Monday with a full day of classes.

According to a Saturday announcement on Broward Schools’ social media, “the District looks forward to welcoming all students and employees back to school on Monday, Sept. 18, 2017.”

District officials also added that before and after-school programs will also resume on Monday. Buses may face delays with some roadways to schools still waiting to be cleared.

Miami-Dade County public schools will also re-open on Monday according to school superintendent Alberto Carvalho, who made the announcement on Sunday afternoon.

Not all Miami-Dade schools will have air conditioning in all parts of their schools. The buildings have been inspected and deemed safe. However, there may be some power interruptions during the day.

“There may be delays, inconvenience and a bit of discomfort,” Carvalho said on Twitter. “We ask for your patience as we transition back to school.”

Public schools in both counties also announced all students will receive not only the free breakfast to which they are entitled but a free lunch for the foreseeable future.

Several private and charter schools are also planning to re-open on Monday.

No athletic events have been held in nearly two weeks in either county.

The Florida High School Activities Association granted its schools statewide permission to practice on Sunday if it was possible in an effort to catch up.

The Broward County Athletic Association’s Rocky Gillis and other officials plan to inspect football fields at each of its member schools on Monday. If they are in good condition, the schedule for Week 5 would go on as planned.

The BCAA postponed all golf, cross country and swimming competitions for Monday and Tuesday and will make a decision by Monday night when to resume. Girls’ volleyball is expected to resume on Tuesday depending on gymnasium conditions at each school.

Many Florida Gold Coast club team swimmers stayed in shape with dry land training off site in homes and garages including South Florida Aquatic Club with Bridge Athletics, which designed an eight-day training schedule for athletes to maintain strength and flexibility while out of the pool. Age group and senior coaches stayed in contact with their swimmers and dry land workouts.

As of last Wednesday, SOFLO’s home Academic Village Pool was up and running thanks to the tireless efforts of the City of Pembroke Pines and SOFLO coaches and support team. Pool chemicals are balanced and facility is safe. High school and club swimmers resumed training on Thursday.

BCAA Swimming, Diving Championships Cancelled, Will Not Be Rescheduled

By Sharon Robb

October 6, 2016—The Broward County Athletic Association Swimming and Diving Championships scheduled for Saturday at Plantation Aquatics Complex have been cancelled and will not be rescheduled.

Hurricane Matthew forced the cancellation or postponement of all games and events scheduled through the weekend for public schools in Broward and Palm Beach counties.

The Palm Beach County Swimming and Diving Championships were also postponed at Lake Lytal Aquatic Complex in West Palm Beach.

The much-anticipated BCAA meet attracts all BCAA-member schools and excludes Pine Crest, American Heritage, University School, Westminster Academy, Archbishop McCarthy and other private teams allowing schools to earn county bragging rights.

It is the first time the BCAA meet has been cancelled in meet history.

Pembroke Pines Charter’s undefeated boys’ team was expected to be among the favorites and challenge defending boys champion Cypress Bay for the team title.

Cooper City sophomore Kathleen Golding was defending champion in the 200-yard individual medley (2:06.86) and 100-yard butterfly (56.80) and was expected to repeat.

Kelley Heron of Pembroke Pines Charter was a favorite in the 100-yard backstroke. She is ranked third in the county behind Jessica Nava of Westminster Academy and Allison Kopas of University School.

In the boys’ races, Pembroke Pines Charter’s Richardo Roche (200-yard individual medley, 1:59.87, 100-yard backstroke, 55.06), Rafael Rodriguez (100-yard butterfly, 54.68, 500-yard freestyle, 4:48.71), Juan Lucas (100-yard butterfly, 54.77, 100-yard backstroke, 55.40) and Matthew Menocal (100-yard freestyle, 52.08) were all among favorites to finish in the top three in their respective events.

Broward Schools Superintendent Robert Runcie told reporters Wednesday at a press conference safety is the primary objective. Even when Hurricane Matthew and its outer bands continues its path out of Broward County the residual effects in damages, lost electricity and debris would make it impossible to host any events on the weekend.

The county rival football game between St. Thomas Aquinas and Deerfield Beach was also cancelled and will not be rescheduled. The district football games and other BCAA events will be rescheduled, officials said.

SOFLO’s Marinheiro Sisters Lead West Broward At BCAA Championships

Marinheiro Sisters Lead West Broward, SOFLO At BCAA Championships

WRITTEN BY SHARON ROBB

October 14, 2012

Melissa Marinheiro had a feeling her hard training would pay off and it did Saturday night at the Broward County Athletic Association Swimming and Diving Championships at Plantation Aquatic Complex.

The West Broward High School sophomore broke her own meet record in the 500-yard freestyle in a season-best 4:58.07, the county’s fastest time this season. She finished more than two body lengths ahead of Nova junior Daniela Veloza (5:05.22). Her previous record set was 5:00.34 as a freshman.

“I wanted to go under my time for last year,” the Brazilian swimmer said, “I’ve been training really hard.”

Big sister Marcella Marinheiro, a senior at West Broward, won the 100-yard backstroke in 59.54, bettering her season-best of 1:03.78. She was also third in the 200-yard freestyle in 1:56.10.

West Broward junior Amber Hunter was second in the 100-yard butterfly in 1:00.78.

The Marinheiro sisters, Hunter and Whitney Johnson were second in the 400-yard freestyle relay in 3:40.51.

Cypress Bay sophomore Kylie Herman, in her BCAA debut, was third in the 500-yard freestyle in 5:22.18. Lilli Calero of Pembroke Pines Charter was fifth in 5:32.69. Hannah Doyle of Flanagan was 15th in 6:14.32.

West Broward girls finished fourth among girls teams with 199 points and the boys finished ninth with 116.

Pembroke Pines Charter boys, led by Ivan Parada, finished ninth with 116 points and the girls also finished ninth with 119. Parada, a senior, was third in the 100-yard freestyle in 49.67 and fourth in the 100-yard backstroke in 58.10.

West Broward senior Jacob Walters was third in the 100-yard butterfly in 53.31.

SOFLO swimmers turned in some solid swims in the finals and consolations.

Herman, a sophomore was seventh in the 200-yard freestyle in 2:01.91 and Amber Hunter of West Broward was eighth in 2:02.30. Freshman Lilli Calero of Pembroke Pines Charter was fifth in consos in 2:09.04.

Freshman Monica Rodriguez of Pembroke Pines Charter was seventh in the 200-yard individual medley in 2:26.30 and 11th in the 100-yard butterfly in 1:07.49. Teammate Madeleine Fernandez was sixth in consos in 2:31.07 and was second in the 100-yard backstroke consos in 1:07.39.

In the 50-yard freestyle, Nicole Cordoba (27.51), Victoria Hill (27.52) and Leysha Caraballo (28.15), all of Pembroke Pines Charter finished sixth, seventh and eighth in consolations. Caraballo was sixth in the 100 butterfly consos in 1:09.94.

Cypress Bay freshman Carly Swanson was seventh in the 100-yard freestyle consos in 1:00.42.

Gustavo Valery of Flanagan was eighth in the 100-yard backstroke in 59.72.

Walters, a senior, was also eighth in the 200-yard individual medley in 2:12.45. Joshue Kon of Pembroke Pines Charter was second in the 200 IM consos in 2:11.66, teammates Alexander Viloria was third in 2:11.84 and Diego Rodriguez was eighth in 2:18.23. Rodriguez was eighth in the 100-yard breaststroke consos in 1:11.47.

William Perry was eighth in the 50-yard freestyle in 23.92 and eighth in the 100-yard freestyle in 54.26.

Joshua Coote of Pembroke Pines Charter was sixth in the 100-yard butterfly in 1:00.07.

Cypress Bay freshman Jonathan Strod was fifth in the 100-yard freestyle in 52.71 and sixth in the 100-yard breaststroke in 1:07.06.

Alex Monti of West Broward was eighth in the 500-yard freestyle in 5:07.98 and third in the 100-yard breaststroke consos in 1:09.16. Josue Kon of Pembroke Pines Charter was ninth in 5:10.29.

Gustavo Valery of Flanagan was 17th in the 100-yard freestyle in 53.50 and Fernando Quintero of Flanagan was 19th in 53.85. Quintero was fourth in the 100-yard backstroke consos in 1:01.11

St. Thomas Aquinas defended their team titles. The boys, led by record-breaker Brandon Goldman and Alex Lilley, won with 469 points ahead of Nova (293) and Cypress Bay (208).

The girls team won with with 391 points finishing ahead of surprise runner-up Cypress Bay (214) and Cardinal Gibbons (207). It was the second major meet the Raiders swept after winning last month’s Florida Catholic Swimming and Diving State Championships in Orlando.

The Raiders swept all six boys and girls relays and dominated the record field of 886 athletes and 24 teams.

Goldman, a senior, was one of three swimmers to break BCAA meet records. Goldman broke the 100-yard backstroke record in 52.03. The previous record was 53.05 set by Kevin Bandy of Douglas in 2007. Goldman also won the 200-yard individual medley (1:54.81) and was on two winning relays.

St. Thomas boys coach Marty Grady was pleased with his team’s effort but knows how tough it will be just to duplicate its second place finish in 2011, which was the team’s best state finish since 2004 and just four years after finishing 54th.

“I am very happy for our team, a lot of kids swam great tonight,” Grady said. “Brandon and Alex were good leaders. I was hoping to prepare my district meet entry and see if we have a chance to make another run at Top 3 at state. I think we have a chance if we keep improving. These kids are stepping up and doing well.”

The Raider girls, led by double winner Mia Fiorenzi, were equally impressive. Fiorenzi won the 200-yard individual medley (2:10.18) and 100-yard butterfly (57.86) and was on two winning relays.

“They are excited because this is a championship meet,” said St. Thomas girls coach Jimmy Parmenter, whose team graduated all its seniors last season. “This is a stepping stone. I got to find out what the team was like a little more in a championship meet and see what direction we are going to go.”

One other meet record was broken.

Taravella junior Alex (Ilya) Evdokimov broke the meet record in the 100-yard breaststroke in 58.71, the county’s fastest time. He was the only swimmer in the field to crack 1 minute. The previous record was 59.88 set last year by Kristof Kertesz of South Broward.

Cypress Bay junior Emma Lincoln just missed the meet record in the 100-yard freestyle, winning in 52.23 just 1/10th of a second off. Lincoln also won the 200-yard freestyle (1:52.96).

Fort Lauderdale senior Lance Rutkin was a double winner in the 200-yard freestyle (1:43.47) and 500-yard freestyle (4:40.74).

Other winners were: Osianna McReed of Northeast, 50-yard freestyle (25.00); Keegan Boisson-Yates of Taravella, 100-yard butterfly (52.07); Francisco Parra of Cypress Bay, 100-yard freestyle (47.95); and Lydia Musleh, Coral Glades (1:08.99).

Juniors Alexa Elkins of Western and Jack Harrington of St. Thomas Aquinas won the 1-meter springboard diving titles.

All but one Western High swimmer scratched from finals because of the homecoming dance. Senior Francisco Alvarez was the only trooper who stayed around to swim the butterfly (12th in 58.75) and backstroke finals (7th in 59.41). The Western one-man team was coached by SOFLO’s Alessandra Escobar, the SOFLO/Comets Swim School Site Supervisor and Cypress Bay alum.

Greater Miami Athletic Conference Championships

Maria Lopez of Hialeah Gardens won the 100-yard butterfly in 57.44 Friday night at the GMAC Swimming and Diving Championships at Miami Springs Aquatic Complex. Hialeah Gardens finished third among girls teams with 62 points behind Coral Reef (87) and Palmetto (74). Palmetto won the boys team title with 96 points followed by Columbus (48) and Krop (35).

Palm Beach County Championships

Nine meet records were broken, including two by University of Texas-bound Tasija Karosas of St. Andrew’s Saturday night at the Palm Beach County Swimming and Diving Championships at Lake Lytal. St. Andrew’s won the girls team title with 498.5 points and Boca Raton boys won with 459 points. Karosas, the Most Outstanding Girl Swimmer of the Meet, won the 200-yard individual medley in 2:03.83 breaking Natalie Pike’s 2003 record of 2:06.13. She also won the 100-yard backstroke in 55.97. She was also a member of two winning and record-breaking relays. Jason McCormick of Boca Raton and Quinn Cassidy of St. Andrew’s were named Co-Most Outstanding Boys of the Meet. South Florida Aquatic Club will be well-represented at the Broward County Athletic Association Swimming and Diving Championships Saturday at Plantation Aquatic Complex.

The BCAA meet is the beginning of the championship season for swimmers and divers hoping to fine tune for district, region and state meets.

The meet has a record 886 athletes from 24 teams including a record 268 swimmers entered in the girls 50-yard freestyle and 262 in the boys 50-yard freestyle.

Prelims begin 9 a.m. and championship finals 5 p.m.

West Broward sophomore Melissa Marinheiro leads the SOFLO contingent. She is seeded first in the 500-yard freestyle in 5:12.70. She is also swimming an off-event, the 100-yard breaststroke where she is seeded eighth in 1:12.60.

SOFLO has four of the top five seeds in the 500-yard freestyle. In addition to Marinheiro, Kylie Herman of Cypress Bay is seeded third in 5:19.03, Haley Wright of Cypress Bay is fourth in 5:20.43 and Lilli Calero of Pembroke Pines Charter is fifth in 5:29.12.

Last year as a freshman, Marinheiro broke the BCAA record in the 500-yard freestyle by 3.17 seconds in 5:00.34. Marinheiro also won the 200-yard freestyle in 1:52.73 and her older sister Marcella was third in 1:56.05.

Marcella Marinheiro, a senior, also was second in the 100-yard backstroke in 58.63.

West Broward junior Amber Hunter was fifth in the 100-yard butterfly in 1:03.00. Cypress Bay sophomore Haley Wright was fifth in the 500-yard freestyle in 5:35.10.

Hunter is seeded fourth in the 200-yard freestyle in 1:57.00 and fourth in the 100-yard butterfly in 1:02.53 for this year’s meet. SOFLO teammate Kylie Herman, a Cypress Bay sophomore, is seeded sixth in the 200 free event in 1:59.07; Marcella Marinheiro is seeded seventh in 2:02.60 and Pembroke Pines Charter freshman Lilli Calero is seeded tenth in 2:06.71.

Haley Wright is seeded seventh in the 100-yard butterfly in 1:03.83.

Three-quarters of West Broward’s winning 400-yard freestyle returns with Marcella and Melissa Marinheiro and Amber Hunter. West Broward is competing without its fourth member, former SOFLO swimmer Leonie Davies, who moved with her family to The Woodlands in Texas this past summer.

West Broward boys are led by senior Jacob Walters, seeded seventh in the 100-yard butterfly in 54.68.

Pembroke Pines Charter is led by seniors Ivan Parada, Joshua Coote and Madeleine Fernandez, sophomore Leysha Caraballo and freshman Maria Rodriguez. Parada is seeded third in the 100-yard freestyle in 48.98 and third in the 100-yard backstroke in 55.04.

Flanagan’s Gustavo Valery is seeded 11th in the 100-yard backstroke in 59.36.

Jennifer Huchler, a senior at Cypress Bay and Jack Harrington, a junior at St. Thomas Aquinas, are top seeds in the 1-meter springboard diving competition. Because of the size of the meet, the diving will be held simultaneous during prelims.

St. Thomas Aquinas is defending boys and girls champions. The girls won with 361 points ahead of West Broward with 256. The Raider boys ran away with the meet with 509 points.

Plantation Swim Team and St. Thomas Aquinas are hosting the one-day meet. It is the first time it has been held at Plantation Aquatic Complex being moved from Fort Lauderdale Aquatic Complex.
