High School Swimmers Head To FHSAA State 2A, 1A Meets This Weekend

By Sharon Robb

November 2, 2017—It’s show time for high school swimmers whose high school season ends this weekend at the FHSAA State 1A and 2A Swimming and Diving Championships in Stuart.

The 2A meet, featuring American Heritage Plantation, is Friday and 1A Meet, featuring the perennial battle between defending champion Jacksonville Bolles and Pine Crest, is Saturday.

While the Region 3A and 4A qualifying meets are also being this week for next weekend’s state competition, swimmers who overcame missed workouts and meets because of Hurricane Irma, have recovered to qualify for the ultimate meet in high school swimming. The top 24 swimmers from the combined regions around the state qualified.

The 2A meet is Friday at Sailfish Splashpark Aquatic Athletics Center. Swimming prelims are 9 a.m. and finals begin 5:30 p.m. The girls diving begins 9 a.m. and boys diving at 1:30 p.m. There is a live webcast at NFHS Network for a fee.

In the 2A competition, Gulliver Prep, with both depth and talent, is favored to defend its girls and boys state titles. Gulliver Prep has strength in all three boys and girls relays where points make the difference.

The boys are led by top seeds Miguel Cancel in the 100-yard freestyle and Trahern Gribble in the 100-yard butterfly. The girls are led by Emily Cordovi, a junior, who is top seed in the 100-yard butterfly with an All-American time of 54.47 and 100-yard backstroke, and top seed Marcella Ruppert-Gomez in the 500-yard freestyle.

American Heritage Plantation is led by fifth seed CJ Kopecki in the 200-yard freestyle in 1:44.89. Kopecki was the only boy swimmer to capture a region title in last weeks’ meet. He is seeded eleventh in the 100-yard butterfly in 53.01. Kopecki, a senior and top club swimmer at South Florida Aquatic Club, is competing in his final state meet.

Teammate Kevin Porto, also a senior, is seeded 12th in the 50-yard freestyle in 22.36 and 11th in the 100-yard freestyle in 48.77.

Patriots teammate and freshman Nicolas Rossi had an outstanding season and is seeded 16th in the 500-yard freestyle in 4:57.84. Rossi is one of three freshmen in the distance field. Teammate Joseph Lee, also a freshman, is seeded 22nd in the 100-yard breaststroke in 1:05.22.

The Patriots’ girls team is led by top seed and senior defending champion Catharine Cooper in the 50-yard freestyle in 23.88. She is seeded third in the 100-yard freestyle in 53.07. Junior teammate Thea Mckenna is seeded 18th in the 200-yard individual medley. Junior Annita Huang is competing on the freestyle relays.

Somerset Academy’s Katrina Del Vecchio is seeded eleventh in the 50-yard freestyle in 25.12. She is also seeded 18th in the 100-yard butterfly in 1:00.56. Also competing are Somerset teammate Elise Larin in the 100-yard breaststroke and Juan Pineda of Mater Academy in the 100-yard breaststroke.

Cardinal Gibbons’ Hudson Coldren is top seed and the favorite in the boys 1-meter diving with a county-leading 519.10 points.

In Saturday’s Class 1A competition, the challenge remains the same after more than two decades, how to beat Bolles that usually has enough depth and talent to field three competitive teams. The boys are favored to win their 30th consecutive title and girls team its 27th state title.

There is parity in the individual competition with NSU University’s dynamic duo of Patrick Groters and Daniel Jacobs. NSU University School’s Maia Goldstein is a favorite in the girls diving.

Sagemont senior Samuel Quintero is seeded eleventh in the 100-yard breaststroke in 1:00.52 and 14th in the 200-yard individual medley in 1:59.75. Sagemont teammates Luis Villanueva will swim the 200-yard individual medley and 100-yard butterfly.
