SOFLO’s Young Swimmers Rule Pool In Session Three Of Comets Invitational

SOFLO’s Young Swimmers Rule Pool In Session Three Of Comets Invitational

WRITTEN BY SHARON ROBB

February 2, 2013

The future looks bright for South Florida Aquatic Club’s young swimmers.

The 10-and-under and 11-12 age group swimmers dominated Session Three of the Comets Florida Gold Coast Open Invitational Saturday at Academic Village Pool.

“Our little kids swam better than our older swimmers,” SOFLO head coach Chris Anderson said. “It was a great format for them. The younger kids got to sleep in and swim in warmer weather.”

The 2013 season-opening meet is a good gauge for the coaching staff, Anderson said.

“For sure this is a gauge meet,” Anderson said. “It’s an indication of what we have done for winter training. We understand it’s February and we wanted to train the kids longer and harder. We want to see what they could endure.

“I am pleased to see where we are at and it’s comforting for us as a staff to know we will be successful in the championship season. It’s been a good meet.”

Most of the SOFLO contingent swam at least one lifetime best time.

Michael Arias, 10, led SOFLO’s contingent with four wins. He won the 100-yard backstroke in a best time and JO cut 1:13.65, dropping from 1:18.32; 100-yard butterfly, 1:13.39; 50-yard freestyle in 29.52; and 500-yard freestyle in a best time and JO cut 5:55.39, dropping from 6:00.22.

Other SOFLO winners were:

Sara Quintero, 9, 200-yard breaststroke, 3:32.34.

Delanie Perez, 12, 200-yard breaststroke, 2:40.00; 50-yard breaststroke, 35.52; 100-yard butterfly, 1:06.21, best time.

Samuel Quintero, 12, 200-yard breaststroke, 2:43.05.

Isabella DiSalvo, 10, 100-yard backstroke 1:14.18; 50-yard freestyle, 29.50, best time.

Annita Huang, 11, 100-yard backstroke, 1:08.9.

Rafael Rodriguez, 11, 100-yard backstroke, 1:06.92; 500-yard freestyle, 5:27.86.

Michelle Marinheiro, 10, 100-yard butterfly, 1:28.07; 500-yard freestyle, 6:15.76, best time and JO cut.

The meet concludes on Sunday with two final sessions.

SOFLO Double Winner Carlos Rodriguez Swims Lifetime Bests On Day One Of Comets Open Invitational

January 27, 2012

WRITTEN BY SHARON ROBB

Carlos Rodriguez saw his hard work pay off Friday on the opening day of the Comets Florida Gold Coast Invitational.

The 12-year-old South Florida Aquatic Club swimmer won two events in lifetime best times in the 200-yard freestyle and 200-yard individual medley at the Academic Village Pool in Pembroke Pines.

For the first time in his swimming career, Rodriguez cracked the 2-minute barrier in the 200-yard freestyle in 1:57.27, bettering his previous best of 2:00.53. He also won the 200-yard individual medley in 2:16.89, another big time drop from his previous best of 2:21.65.

“I was so happy because I broke two minutes,” Rodriguez said. “This is what I was going for. I’ve been dreaming about it for a while. It helped having so many good swimmers push me.”

SOFLO teammates Tristan Celestin, Kevin Porto and Rodrigo Rodriguez pushed Carlos Rodriguez during the 200-yard freestyle race that produced fourteen career-best times from swimmers.

What also helped was the added training Rodriguez put in over the holidays. Rodriguez is competing in seven events during the meet.

“I was nervous before my race,” Rodriguez said. “After all the winter training you want to know what the outcome will be. You want to see how all the practice turns out. This was definitely one of my top wins. I am still hoping for more. Coach Anderson is right about putting in the extra training. It helps you swim fast.”

After taking up the sport three years ago, the Pembroke Pines Charter West seventh grader is beginning to take the sport seriously.

“I like the sport,” he said. “It helps when your teammates and coaches encourage you. It’s a fun atmosphere and it’s great being around your friends. I played soccer and baseball before but I enjoyed swimming a lot more.”

Rodriguez ages-up on February 10 when he turns 13. “I want to swim faster and get a sectional cut,” he said.

SOFLO dominated opening night action winning nine out of ten events and turning in 88 career-best times, 47 by the girls team and 41 by the boys.

On a perfect night for swimming, the most impressive event was the 1,650-yard freestyle where twenty SOFLO swimmers improved their times.

Melissa Marinheiro, 14, won the mile in 17:13.67 bettering her previous best of 18:21.01. Runner-up Leonie Davies also had a huge time drop in 17:43.97 bettering her previous best of 18:15.60. Marc Rojas, 17, won the boys race in 16:14.30, bettering his previous best of 16:29.96.

The three-day meet continues Saturday with prelims and finals for the older swimmers and timed finals for the 12-and-under swimmers.

Record Turnout For Comets FGC Open Invitational This Weekend, SOFLO Opens Short Course Season

WRITTEN BY SHARON ROBB

September 23, 2010

An impressive mix of age group and high school, Olympians and Olympic hopeful swimmers will compete in the Comets Florida Gold Coast Open Invitational Friday through Sunday.

With 988 swimmers, the three-day meet is the largest Florida Gold Coast meet the Comets have ever hosted at the newly-refurbished Academic Village Pool in Pembroke Pines and largest short course meet in the Florida Gold Coast.

The first major Florida Gold Coast meet of the fall, featuring mostly south club teams, begins Friday with one session at 5:30 p.m.

Two sessions, split into 12-and-under and 13-and-over will be held Saturday and Sunday at 8:30 a.m. and 2 p.m.

The South Florida Aquatic Club, coming off an outstanding summer season that included a FGC Junior Olympic team title and FGC Senior Championships runner-up finish, is among favorites in the 22-team field. Davie Nadadores, Fort Lauderdale Aquatics and Metro Aquatics are also contenders.

Three new SOFLO swimmers will make their FGC meet debut. Grandview Prep exchange students, Valerio Rasi and Gianpaolo Barelli of Italy and Robert O’Gorman, whose family moved from Sweden, will compete.

Barelli, 17, and Rasi, 17, will compete in the 500-yard freestyle along with several other events.

Several of SOFLO’s elite swimmers will compete. Two-time Olympian Vlad Polyakov of Kazakhstan, Olympian Arlene Semeco of Venezuela and Olympic hopeful Loai Tashkandi of Saudi Arabia head the list of world-class swimmers.

Tashkandi, 19, a national record holder, is coming off an outstanding summer highlighted by his three-gold medal and national record-breaking  performance at the GCC Aquatic Championships in Kuwait.

Tashkandi is seeded first in the 200-yard individual medley (1:52) and 50-yard freestyle (22.00).

Keegan Boisson-Yates, 15, and Tyla Martin, 13, who compete internationally for Trinidad and Tobago, head a strong age group contingent for SOFLO that also includes sisters Emily, 14, and Allison Kopas, 12, Ann Kuczynski, 16, Linea Cutter, 17, Eden Cooke, 11, Kelley Heron, 11, Catharine Cooper, 10, Leonie Davies, 14, Marc Rojas, 16, and Carly Swanson, 13.

Several SOFLO swimmers are top-seeded in their events.

Charlotte Hartung, 17, another SOFLO newcomer, is seeded first in the 13-and-under 100-yard backstroke.
