By Sharon Robb

December 26, 2017—-For the second year in a row, South Florida Aquatic Club had three of its high school swimmers earn 2017 Broward All-County first team honors.

Selected by the Sun-Sentinel and announced last week, Kathleen Golding of Cooper City, Kelley Heron of Pembroke Pines Charter and Juan Diaz of Cypress Bay earned first team honors.

Golding, a junior and University of Florida commit, was named to the first team for the third consecutive year. Golding was selected in the 200-yard individual medley and 100-yard freestyle.

Golding is a three-time state champion in the 200-yard individual medley with a best time of 1:59.72. She was a state runner-up in the 100-yard freestyle in 49.79. She was a member of the seventh place 200-yard medley relay team making its state meet debut.

Golding is joined by her high school coach Jill Ankney for the first time. The Cowboys finished 7-1 and were district and region runners-up. The Cowboys were eighth at the state meet with 10 swimmers and two divers.

Heron, a senior and Michigan State commit, was named first team for the second straight year in the 100-yard backstroke. The MVP leaves behind two high school records in the 200-yard individual medley in 2:05.22 and 100-yard backstroke in 56.33.

Diaz made first team on the 400-yard freestyle relay with teammates Diego Machado, Luis Bucaro and Diego Homes with a season-best 3:11.47. Diaz was also among the county’s Top 10 in the 100-yard backstroke and 200-yard freestyle.

Diaz’ high school coach John Spire was named Boys Coach of the Year. The Lightning won BCAA, district and region boys team titles and was 11th at state.

Junior Ricardo Roche of Pembroke Pines Charter and freshman Paige Lane of Cypress Bay earned second team honors. Roche was selected for the 500-yard freestyle and Lane, making her high school debut, was picked in the 200-yard freestyle.

Earning Honorable Mention honors were CJ Kopecki and Kevin Porto of American Heritage Plantation; Heath Brames of Cooper City; Rafael Rodriguez of Pembroke Pines Charter; Juan Serna of West Broward; Sam Quintero of Sagemont; Molly Golding of Cooper City; and Sarah Acevedo of Everglades.

Patrick Groters of NSU University School and Aruba was named the Boys Swimmer of the Year. The University of Denver commit won a state title in the 100-yard backstroke and was state runner-up in the 200-yard individual medley.

Westminster Academy senior and University of Virginia commit Jessica Nava was named Girls Swimmer of the Year for the second consecutive year. She defended her title in the 100-yard butterfly in a state record 53.39 and won the 100-yard backstroke in 55.10

It was one of SOFLO’s finest showings on an all-county team since the program’s inception. Only Broward County swimmers were eligible. The Miami Herald is expected to announce its Broward and Dade all-county teams in January.

Cooper City’s Kathleen Golding Three-Peats, Wins State Title At FHSAA State 4A Meet

By Sharon Robb

STUART, November 10, 2017—-In front of a packed house at Sailfish Splashpark Aquatic Athletics Center on an electrifying Friday night, Kathleen Golding won another state title at the FHSAA State 4A Swimming and Diving Championships.

The Cooper City junior defended her title in the 200-yard individual medley in an automatic All-American time of 1:59.72, the only swimmer to crack 2 minutes in the field. It was her third consecutive state title in the challenging event.

“I had confidence since I had won it twice before,” Golding said. “I’m glad I did well and had a better time that was under two minutes.”

Golding was the only girl or boy swimmer from Broward County to capture a state title. She was also second in the 100-yard freestyle in a close race with Micayla Cronk of Flagler Palm Coast, 49.58-49.79. It was the first time she swam the 100 freestyle at state. In the past two state meets, her second event was the 100 butterfly.

Golding was a member of the Cowboys’ seventh place 200-yard medley relay that finished in 1:49.11 with teammates Solana Capalbo, Molly Golding and Barbara Bernal. She also anchored the tenth place 200-yard freestyle relay.

Cooper City was the top Broward girls team finisher placing eighth with 93 points. The next Broward girls finisher was Cypress Bay, 19th with 32 points. Cypress Bay was the top boys team, placing 11th with 79 points.

Jennifer Rodriguez of Hialeah Gardens had a Top 10 finish placing ninth in the 100-yard breaststroke in 1:06.57.

Cypress Bay freshman Paige Lane was 11th in the 200-yard freestyle in 1:53.98 and 12th in the 100-yard freestyle in 52.97. Another freshman, Molly Golding of Cooper City was tenth in the 100-yard breaststroke in 1:06.84.

Cooper City’s Heath Brames, making his first state meet appearance, was tenth in the 100-yard freestyle in 47.38. Brames also led off the Cowboys’ 200-yard freestyle relay that was ninth in 1:29.59 with teammates Ivan Capalbo, Mark Zhang and Robert Wilson.

Juan Diaz of Cypress Bay was 12th in the 100-yard backstroke in 53.56.

Park Vista senior Kyle DiMatteo ended his high school career with two state titles in the 50-yard freestyle in 20.42 and 100-yard freestyle in 44.45. The high school All-American is headed to Florida State next fall.

Jupiter’s Will Lefebre won the 1-meter diving title with 505.75 points.

Mandarin senior Keegan Fluharty, seeded second, won the girls diving title with 470.30. She is the first northeast Florida diver to win a state girls title since 2013 after placing sixth, sixth and fifth the past three seasons.

Gainesville Buchholz won the girls team title with 360.5 points, ahead of Tampa Plant with 273. Sarasota Riverview won the boys title with 278.5 points. Laker Brantley was second with 198.

Cypress Bay Lightning Sweeps BCAA Team Titles; Cooper City’s Kathleen Golding Breaks Two BCAA Records

By Sharon Robb

PLANTATION, OCTOBER 7, 2017—Before the season started, Cypress Bay veteran swim coach John Spire said he could have the best girls team since 2006 when it finished sixth at the State 4A meet. He just may be right.

And the boys team isn’t too shabby either.

With both talent and depth, which can take a high school team a long way during the championship season, Cypress Bay looked impressive Saturday night sweeping the boys and girls team titles at the Broward County Athletic Association Swimming and Diving Championship.

The Lightning, led by freshman sensation Paige Lane, winner in the 200-yard freestyle and third in the 100-yard freestyle; Gaby Banks, winner in the 50-yard freestyle; and winning 400-yard freestyle relay with Lane, Elizabeth Riley, Ulrike Tovilla and Banks, the girls team won with 554 points, the only team, boys or girls, to crack the 500-point barrier.

2015 defending girls champion St. Thomas Aquinas was second with 426 and much-improved Cooper City was third with 334, edging Fort Lauderdale by two points (332).

Cypress Bay, the 2015 defending boys champion, defended its title with 419 points ahead of Fort Lauderdale with 345 and St. Thomas Aquinas was third with 321.

The Lightning was led by individual winner Diego Machado in the 200-yard freestyle, also second in the 100-yard butterfly. Machado was swimming on very little sleep after returning to the U.S. Saturday morning at 4 a.m. after competing in the Junior South American Youth Games in Santiago, Chile.

The 2016 BCAA meet was cancelled because of Hurricane Matthew. This season’s swimmers, despite missing more than a week of training because of Hurricane Irma, were excited to compete for BCAA bragging rights and gauge their training for the upcoming district, region and state meets.

Cooper City junior Kathleen Golding, who as a freshman won the 200-yard individual medley (2:06.86) and 100-yard butterfly (56.80, BCAA record) at the BCAA meet, was outstanding among the girls field breaking two more BCAA records.

Golding, the only Florida Gold Coast swimmer recently selected for USA Swimming’s National Select Camp at the Olympic Training Center in Colorado Springs, set records in the 200-yard individual medley and 100-yard freestyle.

Golding led from wire-to-wire in the 200-yard medley relay to finish in 2:02.93 ahead of her freshman teammate and sister Molly Golding in 2:13.44. She broke the 2009 record of 2:03.64 set by Lindsey McKnight of Douglas.

Golding also broke the 100-yard freestyle record in 51.14. The previous mark of 52.10 was held by Tiffany Oliver of Cypress Bay. Oliver trained at the same South Florida Aquatic Club that Golding now trains at. Oliver went on to Florida State and successfully passed her bar exam and recently was sworn into the Florida Bar.

Oliver took to Facebook late Saturday night after learning her record was broken.

“Congratulations Kathleen Golding for breaking my 8-year-old Broward County High School record in the 100-freestyle,” Oliver wrote. “Must be one helluva swimmer.”

Golding finished with 48 points and tied Fort Lauderdale’s Giulia Guerre-Montes for high point honors.

At the mid-season point, Golding was pleased with her record swims and also happy the select camp will not interfere with her high school championship season.

“Those were two records I wasn’t really expecting at all,” Golding said. “I thought I could get close to the records, I knew that it was possible but because of the hurricane we have been training hard to catch up to the time lost. I didn’t think I would go best times, untaper and unshaved. I just wanted to see what I could.

“I am so happy for Cooper City, it’s exciting to have a team there,” Golding said. “The best part is they help me swim well. We talk and have fun.”

The only other girls’ double winner was Giulia Guerre Montes of Fort Lauderdale in the 500-yard freestyle and 100-yard backstroke.

Fort Lauderdale also had a boys’ double winner. Kevin De Grijze won the 200-yard individual medley in 1:55.03 and 100-yard breaststroke in 1:00.33. He finished with 48 points and tied for high point award with Douglas sprinter Nicholas Dworet also a double winner in the 50- and 100-yard freestyles.

Douglas swept the 1-meter springboard diving titles.

Connor Dietrich won the boys with 206.55 points. Tyler Flowers of Cooper City was runner-up with 193.40. Six divers competed with four no-shows. Olivia Rosen won the girls title with 232.45 points ahead of Cooper City’s Courtney Russo with 225.95.

Several swimmers did not compete because of Saturdays SATs college placement testing.

ELSEWHERE

Gulf Coast High School captured its eighth Collier County Athletic Conference overall title on Saturday. A scoring error of calculating points for only top five instead of top 16 was discovered after Barron Collier was initially announced the winner. Gulf Coast girls finished with 628 followed by Barron Collier with 451 and Naples with 344. Barron Collier won the boys with 511 and Gulf Coast was runner-up with 450.

BCAA Swimming & Diving Championships Return On Saturday

By Sharon Robb

October 5, 2017—After a year’s absence because of Hurricane Matthew, the Broward County Athletic Association Swimming and Diving Championship returns Saturday at Plantation Aquatics Complex.

Last year Hurricane Matthew forced the cancellation of several high school events including the BCAA meet which serves as a gauge for the district, region and state meets.

The much-anticipated BCAA meet attracts all BCAA-member schools and excludes Pine Crest, American Heritage Plantation, University School, Westminster Academy, Archbishop McCarthy and other private teams allowing schools to earn county bragging rights for at least a week.

It was the first time the BCAA meet had been cancelled in meet history.

Cypress Bay, St. Thomas Aquinas, Pembroke Pines Charter and Pompano Beach are among favorites to challenge for team titles. Cypress Bay, with depth and talent, could sweep the team titles.

Cooper City junior Kathleen Golding, recently selected for USA Swimming’s National Select Camp, is defending champion in the 200-yard individual medley (2:06.86) and 100-yard butterfly (56.80). This weekend she is top seed in the 200 IM and 100-yard freestyle. Her younger sister and teammate Molly Golding is seeded second in the 200 IM and first in the 100-yard breaststroke.

Among individual top seeds are Cypress Bay freshman Paige Lane in the 200-yard freestyle; Ricardo Roche of Pembroke Pines Charter in the 200-yard individual medley; Cypress Bay sophomore Diego Machado in the 100-yard butterfly; junior Mattheus Santos of Pompano Beach; and Andres Lares of Pembroke Pines Charter in the 500-yard freestyle.

The daylong meet, hosted by the BCAA, Pembroke Pines Charter and St. Thomas Aquinas, begins 9 a.m. with prelims and ends with finals at 5 p.m.
