Coral Springs’ Deven Christopher Wins Two Golds; Broward County YMCA Finishes Fourth At YMCA Masters Nationals

Deven Christopher of the Broward County YMCA ended on a winning note Sunday at the YMCA Short Course Masters National Swimming Championships at Fort Lauderdale Aquatic Complex.

Christopher, 37, who trains with the Coral Springs Masters, won the 35-39 50-yard backstroke in 32.56, faster than her seed time of 32.77. She also won the 200-yard individual medley in 2:31.15, faster than her seed time of 2:33.11.

Christopher also swam a time trial in the 1,000-yard freestyle and finished in 12:00.34.

Coral Springs Masters swimmer Barbara Protzman, 57, led off the Broward County YMCA’s fourth place mixed 55-plus 200-yard freestyle relay that finished in 2:02.20.

Coral Springs Masters teammate Celia Devanney was a member of Broward County YMCA’s sixth-place finisher in the mixed 45-plus 200-yard freestyle relay.

Other Broward YMCA champions on the final day were:

*The mixed 75-plus 200-yard freestyle relay on Cav Cavanaugh, Maria Menocal, Mary Jane Mullins and Alfredo Utrilla in 3:00.74.

*Suzanne Dearworth, 39, 35-39 200-yard breaststroke in 2:58.41.

*Kelly Legaspi, 40, 40-44 200-yard breaststroke in 2:28.43.

*Sean Frampton, 45, 45-49 200-yard breaststroke 2:16.18, bettering his seed time of 2:19.05.

*Cathy Mancino, 62, 60-64 100-yard butterfly in a meet record 1:20.71 and 200-yard individual medley in 3:01.75, bettering her seed time of 3:07.20.

*Jeannie Mitchell, 65, 65-69 50-yard backstroke in 38.77.

*Robert Smith, 68, 65-69 50-yard backstroke in 31.00 bettering his seed time of 32.00.

*Dale LeClair, 42, 40-44 100-yard freestyle in 57.45 bettering her seed time of 58.50.

*Terry Lage, 44, 40-44 100-yard freestyle in 52.38 bettering his seed time of 54.50.

*David Quiggin, 67, 65-69 100-yard freestyle in 56.33 bettering his seed time of 57.20.

*Cav Cavanaugh, 76, 75-79 100-yard freestyle in 1:05.67 bettering his seed time of 1:10.50.

Pembroke Pines police officer Jennifer Martin, 31, of Sarasota YMCA Masters who trains with the South Florida Aquatic Club in Pembroke Pines, won the 30-34 100-yard butterfly in 1:06.21. She also won the 50-yard backstroke in 31.19.

Broward County YMCA finished fourth overall in both the men’s and women’s competition. The men finished with 1,243 points. The women finished with 1,193 points.

Sarasota YMCA Masters defended its team titles. The women won with 3,196 points and the men with 3,284 points. Broward County YMCA finished fourth in the men’s and women’s competition.

Barbara Protzman and Celia Devanney of the Coral Springs Masters are among some of the top masters swimmers from around the state competing in the third annual Rowdy Gaines Masters Classic that begins Friday at the Orlando YMCA Aquatic Center.

Protzman, 57, and Devanney, 54, will compete with the GOLD Masters Club, one of the state’s largest masters swim clubs.

Hosted by Team Blu Frog, the three-day format is 25-meter timed finals.

Other GOLD swimmers entered are Yukako Beatty, 40; Katie Broussard, 37; Cav Cavanaugh, 76; Debbie Cavanaugh, 53; Jose Ferraz, 66; David Hoffman, 60; Maureen Hughes, 58; James Jacobson, 49; David McIntyre, 74; JC Mejia, 25; Jeannie Mitchell, 65; Carolyn Mizell, 44; Al Moreno, 51; Danielle Ogier, 59; Brant Parsons, 38; Roger Parsons, 64; David Quiggin, 67; Howard Rolston, 71; Pat Sargeant, 58; Roy Sonenshein, 54; and Ann Stewart, 41.

Competing for the first time in four years is three-time Olympian Brooke Bennett, 31, of Tampa, who has been training diligently for the meet and sharing her training with her fans on Twitter. Olympians Martin Zubero, 42, Tracey McFarlane, 45, Mitzi Kremer, Ozzie Quevedo and two-time Olympic diver Mark Ruiz are also in the field.

International Swimming Hall of Fame CEO and President Bruce Wigo, 62, of Fort Lauderdale competing for Team BLU Frog, is also entered.

“All the cool kids will be here,” Gaines said.

GOLDEN GOGGLES NOMINEES ANNOUNCED

Ryan Lochte, Michael Phelps and teenager Missy Franklin are among frontrunners after earning four nominations each for the Golden Goggles Awards honoring the year’s top performances in USA Swimming.

Lochte and Phelps were nominated for Male Athlete of the Year.

Lochte, a six-time Olympic medalist, won five gold medals and a bronze at the World Championships in July in Shanghai, China while also setting the first individual world record since the high-tech body suits were banned at the end of 2009. Phelps won seven medals at worlds.

Franklin along with Elizabeth Beisel, Rebecca Soni and Dana Vollmer were nominated for Female of the Year. All four won individual gold medals at worlds.

Gregg Troy, Bob Bowman and Todd Schmitz, coaches of Lochte, Phelps and Franklin were among Coach of the Year nominees along with Teri McKeever and Dave Salo.

The winners will be determined through online fan voting which ends Nov. 18. The awards will be announced during a banquet Nov. 20 in Los Angeles. The event serves as a fundraiser for the USA Swimming Foundation.

MISCELLANEOUS

Michael Phelps, looking for a few good international races, will compete on the Berlin leg of the FINA/Arena World Cup Series next week. The second leg of the series is Saturday and Sunday in Stockholm, Sweden with a beefier field including Aussie Geoff Huegill, American Tyler McGill and German Paul Biedermann…SOFLO’s Dara Torres has the eighth ranked all-time 50-meter freestyle (24.07) on the Top 50 women’s world top  performance long course meters list recently released by swimming statistician Bill Bell. Torres also has ten American records in the event which is the most ever by any U.S. woman swimmer in any event…University of Louisville men’s swim team opens the season with its first meet against Xavier on Friday at the Ralph Wright Natatorium. The team features SOFLO swimmer Kevin Bandy, a junior and Lake Lytal Lightning swimmer Brendon Andrews, a senior…Ridgedale (Minn.) YMCA Bill Toivonen celebrated his 100th birthday recently. He still swims and does water aerobics three times a day. He credits the key to living a long life to good nutrition, good exercise and being around upbeat people.

Barbara Protzman of the Coral Springs Masters will be among some of the top masters swimmers from around the country competing in the U.S. Masters Long Course Summer National Championships that begin Wednesday at Auburn University’s James E. Martin Aquatics Center.

A field of 688 swimmers including world and national age group record holders David Quiggin and Cav Cavanaugh of GOLD are entered.

Protzman, 57, will begin swimming on Thursday in the 55-59 400-meter individual medley (6:56.70 seed time).

Protzman will compete with the larger GOLD Masters Team that features some of the fastest age group swimmers in the nation.

Protzman is also scheduled to compete in the 200-meter freestyle (2:44.98) and 100-meter butterfly (1:34.17) on Thursday; 50-meter butterfly (38.34) and 200-meter individual medley (3:14.27) on Friday and 400-meter freestyle (5:53.28) on Saturday.

Quiggin, 67, will be the first GOLD athlete to swim on Wednesday in the 65-69 800-meter freestyle (11:12.01).
