SOFLO’s Pinon, Farah, Kopecki, Rossi Lead American Heritage Boys Team; Huang Takes First, Second For Girls Team

September 15, 2015—American Heritage Plantation boys’ team remained undefeated with a 99-84 victory over Pine Crest Tuesday at the Woodson Pool in Fort Lauderdale.

The Patriots are now 4-1 during Week Three of the high school swimming and diving season.

It was Pine Crest’s (3-1) first loss of the season.

American Heritage won six individual boys’ events and swept the 200- and 400-yard freestyle relays.

Julien Pinon won two events and anchored both winning relays. Pinon won the 200-yard freestyle in 1:45.00 and 100-yard freestyle in 48.35, both season-bests.

SOFLO teammate CJ Kopecki was second in the 200-yard freestyle in 1:50.75 and second in the 500-yard freestyle in 4:52.50, a season-best dropping from 4:59.27. He was also a member of the winning 400-yard freestyle relay.

Jonathan Farah won the 200-yard individual medley in 2:02.09, also a season-best and third in the 100-yard breaststroke in 1:05.74. Farah was a member of the second-place 200-yard medley relay that finished in 1:41.25.

American Heritage won the 200-yard freestyle relay in 1:31.47 with Kopecki, Farah, Carlos Rodriguez and Pinon and 400-yard freestyle relay in 3:21.25 with Sebastian Vargas, Kopecki, Nico Medina and Pinon.

SOFLO’s Cristian Rossi was a member of the third-place 200-yard medley relay that finished in 1:52.77 and third-place 200-yard freestyle relay that finished in 1:42.78. Rossi was fifth in the 50-yard freestyle in 24.94 and fifth in the 100-yard freestyle in 57.56.

Other American Heritage individual winners were: Carlos Rodriguez, 50-yard freestyle, 22.65; Nico Medina, 100-yard butterfly, 54.33; Nicholas Pacitti, 500-yard freestyle, 4:50.91.

Pine Crest’s Anton Generalov won the 100-yard backstroke in 56.81 and Matthew Petreski won the 100-yard breaststroke in 1:02.64. The Panthers also won the 200-yard medley relay in 1:40.68 with Generalov, Ryan Graff, Joao Vitor Pereira and Christian Soderberg.

Pine Crest swept the 1-meter springboard diving events. Juliette Pozzuoli won the girls event with 249.60 points and Austin Fields won the boys title with 288.60 points, edging teammate Kevin Mendez with 285.75.

“All the boys and girls improved their times including the relays so I can’t complain about anything,” American Heritage coach Nobutaka Tan said.

Pine Crest girls remained undefeated (4-0) with a 117-66 victory over American Heritage Plantation. The Patriot girls’ team dropped to 3-2.

SOFLO’s Annita Huang led off the Patriots’ winning 200-yard freestyle relay that won in 1:44.65. Huang was also second in the 100-yard backstroke in 1:07.36.

Pine Crest girls were led by double winners Marta Ciesla and Molly See.

Ciesla, a member of the USA Swimming junior national team, won the 50-yard freestyle in a showdown with Catharine Cooper, another top sprinter, 23.33-23.90. Ciesla also won the 100-yard freestyle in 51.50. Cooper was second in 53.13.

Ciesla was a member of the winning 200-yard medley relay team that won in 1:56.37 with teammates Molly See, Alexandra Meszaros and Brooke Bernstein.

See won the 100-yard butterfly in 1:07.60 and 100-yard backstroke in 1:06.40.

Other individual girls’ winners were: Audrey Mason of American Heritage, 200-yard freestyle, season-best 2:00.00; Thea Mckenna of American Heritage, 200-yard individual medley in a season-best 2:00.00; No. 1–ranked Alexandra Meszaros of Pine Crest, 500-yard freestyle in a season-best 5:16.20 and Julie Mason of American Heritage, 100-yard breaststroke, 1:18.47.

Pine Crest also won the 400-yard freestyle relay with Daniela Munoz, Daniela Gomez, See and Eva Sher.

South Florida Aquatic Club Keeps Raising The Bar, Enjoys Another Great Year In 2014

December 31, 2014—Success never gets old at South Florida Aquatic Club.

And, it’s never taken for granted.

After outstanding 2012 and 2013 seasons, SOFLO improved again across the board.

From three-time Jamaican Olympian Alia Atkinson breaking a world record to Rafael Rodriguez shattering Florida Gold Coast records, SOFLO enjoyed success at every level.

With talent, depth and good coaching, the largest team in the Florida Gold Coast bonded at every swim meet and never lost sight of the importance of the team concept.

The camaraderie among swimmers and coaches was evident on the pool deck at every short and long course meet during 2014.

As we ring in the New Year on Thursday, let’s reflect on some of the highlights.

SOFLO’s Top 10 Moments Countdown for 2014 were:

10. SOFLO’s Tiffany Oliver of Florida State finishes out college career as the first Seminole in history to defend her Atlantic Coast Conference 50- and 100-yard freestyle titles, with school records in both events and Most Valuable Swimmer honors.

9. SOFLO sends 41 swimmers in three of the four classes at the high school state championships including Julien Pinon, CJ Kopecki and Cristian Rossi of American Heritage Plantation which defended its state 2A boys’ team title.

8. SOFLO qualifies four swimmers for the USA Swimming Speedo Junior Winter Nationals in Federal Way, Wash.

7. SOFLO’s veteran coach Rose Lockie finishes runner-up in the National Age Group Coach of the Year awards.

SOFLO’s Pinon, Kopecki Lead American Heritage At District 11-2A Meet

October 31, 2014—Defending state boys champion American Heritage took its first step to returning to the state meet by winning the District 11-2A Swimming and Diving Championships Friday at Indian River Community College in Fort Pierce.

American Heritage won the combined team title with 860 points and boys team title with 534 points, nearly 200 points ahead of runner-up Suncoast.

Suncoast won the girls team title with 450 points. Lincoln Park was second with 336.

American Heritage swept all three boys relays.

SOFLO’s Julien Pinon was the only boys double winner for American Heritage. Pinon won the 200-yard freestyle in 1:43.18 and 100-yard freestyle in 47.58. He also swam anchor leg on the winning 200- and 400-yard freestyle relays.

American Heritage and SOFLO teammate CJ Kopecki was second in the 500-yard freestyle in 4:49.60 and fourth in the 200-yard freestyle in 1:47.29.

Individual winners for American Heritage were Fernando Bohorquez in the 200-yard individual medley in 2:00.02; Taylor Eaddy in the 100-yard butterfly in 51.71 and Nico Medina in the 500-yard freestyle in 4:48.

Suncoast girls won the 200-yard medley relay and 200-yard freestyle relay and had three individual winners. Jena Pisani won the 200-yard freestyle in 1:55.58, Fabiana Ingram in the 100-yard backstroke in 59.07 and Francesca Vandersluis in the 100-yard breaststroke in 1:07.84.

Catharine Cooper of American Heritage was the only girls double winner. Cooper won the 50-yard freestyle in 24.22 and 100-yard freestyle in 52.38. Cooper also led off the winning 400-yard freestyle relay.

American Heritage Sweeps David Posnack JCC In Dual Meet; SOFLO’s Pinon, Kopecki, Rossi Score

October 7, 2014—In a more relaxing atmosphere, American Heritage got the opportunity to swim most of its swimmers in its meet against David Posnack JCC.

American Heritage won the combined, 259-68; girls, 120-40 and boys, 139-28, team titles.

Because of Posnack’s lack of depth, American Heritage swept the top three places in several events and swept all three boys and girls relays.

The boys won every individual event and swept all three relays.

South Florida Aquatic Club’s Julien Pinon and Fernando Bohorquez were double winners.

Pinon won the 200-yard freestyle in 1:45.71 and 100-yard freestyle in 48.06.

Bohorquez won the 200-yard individual medley in 2:00.75 and 100-yard butterfly in 53.12.

SOFLO teammate CJ Kopecki won his first event in the 500-yard freestyle in 4:57.29, the only swimmer to dip under 5 minutes. Kopecki was also a member of the winning 200-yard medley and 400-yard freestyle relays.

SOFLO’s Cristian Rossi was third in the 100-yard butterfly in 1:01.39 and was a member of the winning 200-yard freestyle relay team.

In the girls races, American Heritage won every event except the 100-yard breaststroke won by Posnack’s Maddie Sumkin in 1:22.03.

Catharine Cooper, Alexandra Pacitti and Lindsay Hay were double winners. Cooper won off-events in the 200-yard freestyle in 2:02.90 and 500-yard freestyle in 5:27.21.

Pacitti won the 100-yard butterfly in 1:06.71 and 100-yard backstroke in 1:06.65.

Hay won the 100-yard freestyle in 56.90 and 200-yard individual medley in 2:19.53.

October 1, 2014—American Heritage boys swim team continued its successful run to open the second month of the high school swim season.

Coming off their weekend FSPA Invitational win, the defending 2A state champions swept Westminster Academy, South Florida Heat and Coral Springs Christian in a four-team meet to remain unbeaten Wednesday at host Westminster Academy in Fort Lauderdale.

The Patriots were led by double winners Taylor Eaddy and Fernando Bohorquez.

Eaddy won the 50-yard freestyle in 22.25 and 100-yard butterfly in 53.03.

Bohorquez, 18, won the 200-yard individual medley in 2:01.22 and 100-yard backstroke in 57.17.

South Florida Aquatic Club’s Julien Pinon, 16, won the 500-yard freestyle in 4:48.46 and was second in the 50-yard freestyle in 22.46.

SOFLO and American Heritage teammates CJ Kopecki, 15, was fourth in the 100-yard butterfly in 56.42 and Cristian Rossi, 14, was fifth in 1:01.63.

American Heritage also swept all three boys’ relays.

Westminster Academy, led by double winners Elizabeth Zubero and Jessica Nava, swept the girls competition with wins over American Heritage, South Florida Heat and Coral Springs Christian.

Zubero won the 200-yard individual medley in 2:12.26 and 100-yard breaststroke in 1:08.86.

Jessica Nava won the 100-yard butterfly in 1:00.16 and 100-yard backstroke in 1:02.07.

September 23, 2014—Defending state boys champion American Heritage Plantation continued its early-season success with a 104-63 victory Tuesday over host Pine Crest.

The Patriots swept all three relays and won seven individual events led by double winners Julien Pinon of South Florida Aquatic Club and Carlos Rodriguez.

Pinon, 16, won the 100-yard freestyle in season-best 48.13 and 50-yard freestyle in 22.55, the first time he has competed in the 50 in a high school meet. Pinon’s previous high school best in the 100 was 48.30. Pinon also anchored the winning 200- and 400-yard freestyle relays.

Rodriguez won the 200-yard freestyle in 1:51.44 and 500-yard freestyle in 5:02.31.

SOFLO teammate CJ Kopecki finished third in the 100-yard butterfly in 57.52. Kopecki was also a member of the winning 200-yard freestyle relay that won in 1:31.88.

Kopecki and SOFLO teammate Cristian Rossi also teamed up to finish second as members of the Patriots’ “C” relay in the 400-yard freestyle relay in 3:37.39 ahead of Pine Crest’s “A” relay.

In the girls competition, Pine Crest won seven individual events and swept all three relays to defeat American Heritage, 129-53.

Tyla Martin and Lindsey Swartz each won two individual events for Pine Crest.

Martin, 17, won the 200-yard freestyle in 1:59.43 and 500-yard freestyle in a season-best 5:15.54, bettering her previous best of 5:16.63. She was also a member of the winning 200-yard medley and 400-yard freestyle relays.

Swartz won the 200-yard individual medley in 2:10.47 and 100-yard breaststroke in 1:08.61. She was also a member of the winning 200-yard medley relay.

Catharine Cooper was a double winner for American Heritage. Cooper, 14, a freshman, won the 50-yard freestyle in a season-best 24.88, bettering her previous best of 24.50, and 100-yard freestyle in 54.80.

Pine Crest swept the boys and girls diving competition, taking the top three boys and girls places.

September 20, 2014—Host University School girls and American Heritage Plantation boys swept the team titles Saturday at the Suns High School Swimming & Diving Invitational at Nova Southeastern University Aquatic Center.

The Suns, after finishing second last year, won with 545 points. Boca Raton was second with 464 and American Heritage Plantation was third with 383. Defending champion South Florida Heat was fourth with 303.

The defending 2A state champion Patriots, in only their second meet of the season, dominated the boys field with 680.50 points. Defending champion University School was runner-up with 472 and Boca Raton was third with 418.50 points.

American Heritage also won the combined team title with 1,063.50 points.

South Florida Aquatic Club’s Julien Pinon, CJ Kopecki and Cristian Rossi all contributed to the victory and continue to fine tune for the big post-regular season meets.

Pinon, 16, won the 100-yard freestyle in 48.30 and was second in the 200-yard freestyle in 1:47.14. Pinon also anchored the winning 400-yard freestyle relay that won in 3:12.91 with teammates Taylor Eaddy, Chris Garcia and Nico Medina.

Kopecki, 15, was fourth in the 50-yard freestyle in a season-best 23.64 and Rossi, 14, was sixth in 24.61, also a season-best.

Kopecki was also sixth in the 100-yard butterfly in 56.55. Rossi was seventh in the 100-yard freestyle in a season-best 54.79.

Rossi and anchor leg Kopecki were also members of the Patriots runner-up 200-yard freestyle relay that finished in 1:36.45.

SOFLO’s Samuel Quintero, 14, was a member of Sagemont’s fourth place 200-yard medley and 200-yard freestyle relay teams. Quintero was also sixth in the 200-yard individual medley in 2:17.47 and eighth in the 500-yard freestyle in 5:26.23.

SOFLO’s Juan Medina of Monsignor Pace also competed and finished eighth in the 100-yard breaststroke in 1:15.13. He led off the eighth place 200-yard medley relay and anchored the seventh place 200-yard freestyle relay.

University School was led by double winner Allison Kopas, diving champion Maia Goldstein and its winning 400-yard freestyle relay.

Kopas won the 50-yard freestyle in 24.82, 100-yard backstroke in 59.35 and led off the winning 400-yard freestyle relay that won in 3:52.62 with teammates Abigail Carswell, Cecily Bowe and Anabella Lyn.

Goldstein won the 1-meter diving title with 425.25 points edging runner-up Juliette Pozzuoli of Pine Crest with 423.95.

Rachael Botting, at 12, one of the youngest swimmers in the meet, was a double winner for South Florida Heat, a competitive swim team for home-schooled students.

Botting won the 100-yard freestyle in 59.25, the only swimmer to break 1-minute. She also won the 100-yard breaststroke in 1:14.59.

Botting was also a member of two winning relays. She led off the 200-yard freestyle that won in 1:46.47 with teammates Windsor Anderton, Lindsey Sauer and Ainsley Anderton. She swam second leg on the winning 200-yard medley relay that won in 2:03.76 with the same trio of teammates.

American Heritage won the boys 200-yard medley relay and 400-yard freestyle relay. The Patriots also won six individual events including two wins from Chris Garcia in the 200-yard freestyle in 1:44.55 and 100-yard butterfly in 53.58.

Daniel Pereira of University School was a double winner, capturing the 200-yard individual medley in 1:57.51 and 100-yard breaststroke in 1:01.00.

Zach Allen of Cardinal Gibbons won the boys diving title with 509.70 points.
