Eleven SOFLO Swimmers Headed To All-Star Meet This Weekend

FORT PIERCE, March 21, 2023—South Florida Aquatic Club has eleven swimmers and one coach on the Florida Gold Coast All-Star team for this weekend’s All-Star dual meet against Florida Swimming at Indian River State College’s Anne Wilder Aquatic Complex.

SOFLO has seven girls and four boys on the team for the three-day meet that runs from Friday night to Sunday morning.

The girls who qualified are Catalina Akpabio, 10, Jenesys Amores, 14, Jianna Amores, 12, Jemma Baldwin, 12, Elise Dinehart, 14, Laila Harran, 13, and Ellie Jackson, 12.

The boys who qualified are Connor Jimenez, 13, Mason Jimenez, 14, Ethan Phan, 10, and Maximiliano Remmele, 13.

SOFLO age group coach Isidro (Issy) Planell is head coach.

A fun and exciting new four-team meet format has been developed that mixes the top athletes from both Florida Swimming and Florida Gold Coast via a draft format. The All-Star meet will be a winner-take-all, and one team will have bragging rights until next year. This year’s four teams are the Rays, Barracudas, Gators, and Sharks.

The top six finishers at the FGC 14&Under Age Group Championships in Coral Springs qualified for the team. Several FGC swimmers turned down spots because of spring break vacations.

The full FGC All-Star roster has yet to be posted on the Florida Gold Coast website.

SOFLO Swimmers Dominate Weather-Abbreviated GMAC Swimming And Diving Championships

MIAMI, October 14, 2022–Mother Nature put a damper on the GMAC Swimming and Diving Championships Thursday at Miami-Dade North, but not before Cutler Bay girls swim team left a lasting impression.

Meet officials were forced to end the meet after the boys’ 100-yard freestyle event because of lightning.

Cutler Bay got off to a good start winning the 200-yard medley relay in 1:50.93 with Elena Dinehart, Olivia Dinehart, Maddy Smutny and Natalie Gembicki. All four train with South Florida Aquatic Club.

In an exciting race among teammates, Smutny also won the 200-yard freestyle in 1:57.58 and Natalie Gembicki was close behind in second in 1:57.88.

Olivia Dinehart won the 200-yard individual medley in 2:08.33 and Sophia Grubbs, also of SOFLO, was third in 2:15.93.

Sisters Natalie and Katelyn Gembicki finished one-two in the 100-yard freestyle in 54.00 and 56.96 respectively.

Katelyn Gembicki was second in the 50-yard freestyle in 25.63 and Elena Dinehart was second in the 100-yard butterfly in 59.05.

Cutler Bay’s boys 200-yard medley relay was fourth in 1:46.52 with Austin Nelson, Nicolai Ross, Jaden Amores and Nicholas Pelaez.

The meet served as a tuneup for the upcoming districts.

Cutler Bay, Miami Beach Win Team Titles In Weather-Shortened Ransom-Everglades School Invite; SOFLO Girl Swimmers Dominate

COCONUT GROVE, September 17, 2022–Cutler Bay and Miami Beach won the girls and boys team titles in the lightning-abbreviated 24th annual Ransom Everglades Invite Saturday at Ansin Aquatics Center.

The timed final eight-team meet was called during the boys’ 100-yard backstroke and girls’ 100 breaststroke heats because of lightning but not before South Florida Aquatic Club girls came up big for Cutler Bay.

Cutler Bay, led by SOFLO swimmers’ six individual event victories and one relay win, won the girls team title with 356 points. Carrollton was runner-up with 339.

Miami Beach, led by double winner Marcoaurelio Lopez-Casula, won the boys team title with 424.5 points. Ransom-Everglades was runner-up with 372 points.

Host Ransom-Everglades, buoyed by depth, won the combined team title with 696 points. Cutler Bay was second with 612. They were the only teams to top the 600-point mark.

SOFLO’s Maddy Smutny and Natalie Gembicki were double winners for Cutler Bay.

Smutny, a senior, won the 200-yard freestyle in 1:57.18 and 500-yard freestyle in 5:12.24 ahead of SOFLO teammate Izzy Wilson of Carrollton in 5:16.03.

Gembicki, also a senior, won the 200-yard individual medley in 2:17.00 and 100-yard freestyle in 55.81.

Other Cutler Bay/SOFLO winners were freshman Jenesys Amores in the 100-yard backstroke in 1:04.31 and sophomore Katelyn Gembicki in the 50-yard freestyle in 25.69.

The SOFLO foursome of Amores, Elise Dinehart, Maddy Smutny and Natalie Gembecki won the 200-yard medley relay for Cutler Bay in 1:55.96.

Olivia Dinehart swam an exhibition in the 200-yard individual medley race in 2:12.34. Dinehart was set to take the SAT but for some reason her registration got canceled and meet organizers would not allow her to enter late.

Cutler Bay junior Austin Nelson was the lone SOFLO boys winner. Nelson won the 500-yard freestyle in 4:53.49 and was a member of the third place 200-yard medley relay team that finished in 1:48.44 with Nicholas Mejia, Jaden Amores and Armando Bertea.

Marcoaurelio Lopez-Casula of Miami Beach was a double winner in the 50-yard freestyle in 21.23 and 100-yard freestyle in 47.50.

SOFLO’s Guillermo Mantilla Wins In Florida Gold Coast-Florida Swimming All-Star Meet Second Session

PEMBROKE PINES, March 26, 2022—Guillermo Mantilla of South Florida Aquatic Club came up big for the Florida Gold Coast All-Stars during the second session of the 2022 Florida Gold Coast vs. Florida All-Star Meet Saturday morning at Indian River State College.

In an exciting race, Mantilla, 10, won the 200-yard individual medley in 2:31.41, just ahead of Florida Gold Coast teammate Eric Macedo in 2:31.55 and Florida Swimming’s Ivan Fesenko in 2:31.79. It was one of the closest races in meet history.

Mantilla also led off the second place 10-and-under 200-yard freestyle relay that finished in 1:54.21 with Macedo, Aiden Goodwin and Christopher Chaison.

Christie Ann Lumsden, 10, was SOFLO’s girls top finisher, placing third in 1:22.93. She was also eighth in the 200 IM in 2:44.23. Teammate Elise Dinehart, 13, was fifth in the 400 IM in 4:54.04.

After two sessions, Florida Swimming remains in the lead for all three categories: Combined, 339-254; Boys, 166-107; and Girls, 143-129.

Christie Ann Lumsden, Guillermo Mantilla Lead SOFLO On Day Two Of Junior Olympics

CORAL SPRINGS, March 11, 2022—Guillermo Mantilla and Christie Ann Lumsden came up big for South Florida Aquatic Club on Day Two of the Florida Gold Coast 14-and-Under Junior Olympics Championships Friday at Coral Springs Aquatic Complex.

Mantilla, 10, was a double winner. He won the 10-and-under 100-yard backstroke in a best time 1:08.56 with a time drop of 6.29 and 200-yard individual medley in 2:29.92. Mantilla leads the 10-and-under high point standings with 38 points.

Lumsden, 10, won the 100-yard breaststroke in a best time 1:18.43, dropping 3.26 off her previous best. She was also fourth in the 200 IM in 2:40.68, also a best time with a time drop of 6.83. She also anchored SOFLO’s seventh place 200-yard freestyle relay. She was ninth in the 50-yard freestyle in a best time 29.59 with a time drop 1.18. Lumsden is third among high point scorers with 20 points.

SOFLO’s 13-14 girls 400-yard freestyle relay was third in 3:43.03 with Amanda Grubbs, Jenesys Amores, Elise Dinehart and Katelyn Gembicki.

SOFLO’s 10-and-under boys were fourth in the 200-yard freestyle relay in 2:05.02 with Zachary Snigur, Toma Petkov, Ethan Phan and Mantilla.

SOFLO’s 11-12 400-yard freestyle was fourth in 3:53.97 with Connor Jimenez, Ryan Harries, Ethan Hall and Maximiliano Remmele.

The race for team titles is going to be a close one over the next two days. South Florida Aquatic Club is second in the combined (284) and girls team standings (127) behind St. Andrew’s Aquatics and is tied with St. Andrew’s for the lead in the boys team standings(157).

SOFLO qualified 59 swimmers for the second consecutive year. Thirty-one boys and 28 girls are competing in 285 individual events and relays.

SOFLO’s 14-year-olds making their final JO short course appearance are Jaden Amores, Amelie Bicerne, Genesis Escobar, Katelyn Gembicki, Andres Gonzalez, Mia Guerrero, Derek Hau, Benjamin Kim, Tania Mantilla, Isabella Montes, Abraham Penaloza, Mariana Pinto, Carlos Rincon, Felipe Rodriguez and Sarah Vasquez.

The top six finishers in each JO event qualify for the Florida Gold Coast All-Star team.

SOFLO Swimmers Dominate Session Two Of TYR SOFLO Open

PEMBROKE PINES, January 22, 2022–South Florida Aquatic Club swimmers rose to the occasion Saturday in the second session of the TYR South Florida Aquatic Club Open.

SOFLO continues to lead the men’s team standings with 675 points and women’s team standings with 747 points. Ransom Everglades is a distant second in both categories.

SOFLO age group swimmers dominated the second session with 68 percent of its swimmers turning in at least one best time during the morning.

SOFLO swept the girls and boys 200-yard medley relays. The girls’ team of Sara Quintero, Olivia Dinehart, Ana Villamil and Nat Gembicki won in 1:55.15.

The boys relay of Alejandro Mateus, Javier Colmenares, Manuel Melendez and Alexander Miller in 1:41.90.

SOFLO’s individual event winners were:

Jenesys Amores, 100-yard backstroke, 1:04.75.

SOFLO and Comets Swim Team Booster Club is hosting a field of 420 swimmers during the three-day meet at Academic Village Pool.

The meet continues Saturday with a second sessions at 1 p.m. and Sunday at 8:30 a.m. and 12:30 p.m.

It is the first SOFLO meet of the 2022 Florida Gold Coast season.

The last TYR SOFLO Open was held in 2020 when SOFLO swept the combined team title with a record 1,888 points; men’s title with 900.5; and women’s title with 987.5 points with 128 swimmers. This year’s team is on track to break its previous record.

SOFLO has the largest club with 179 swimmers (98 boys and 81 girls) in 1,244 individual events and eight relays with 59 relay teams.

Several Florida Gold Coast teams are entered including Metro Aquatics, SwimFast, Coral Springs Swim Club, Tsunami Swim, Ransom Everglades, Cyclones Swim Team, Hialeah Storm, Boca Raton Swim Team, Olympus, Hialeah and Hallandale-based Bravo Swim Team.

In order to prevent the spread of COVID-19, the following protocols are in effect in and around the facility. All people, excluding athletes actively participating in competition, warmup, and warm-down activities in the pool must wear a mask or face covering.

Spectators will only be permitted within a designated area, entering, and exiting through a single gate on the west end of the pool deck, and are encouraged to socially distance.

South Florida Aquatic Club Kicks Off 2022 With TYR SOFLO Open

PEMBROKE PINES, January 19, 2022–What better way to start the New Year than with the TYR South Florida Aquatic Club Open.

SOFLO and Comets Swim Team Booster Club will host a field of 420 swimmers during the three-day meet that gets under way Friday at Academic Village Pool.

The timed final meet begins Friday at 5:30 p.m. with the 200 freestyle, 100 individual medley, 200 individual medley and 400 individual medley. The meet continues Saturday with two sessions at 8:30 a.m. and 1 p.m. and Sunday at 8:30 a.m. and 12:30 p.m.

It is the first SOFLO meet of the 2022 Florida Gold Coast season.

The last TYR SOFLO Open was held in 2020 when SOFLO swept the combined team title with a record 1,888 points; men’s title with 900.5; and women’s title with 987.5 points with 128 swimmers.

SOFLO has the largest club with 179 swimmers (98 boys and 81 girls) in 1,244 individual events and eight relays with 59 relay teams.

SOFLO dominates the top-seeded spots. Some of SOFLO’s top seeds are Christie Ann Lumsden, Sofia Gomez, Elise Dinehart, Felipe Rodriguez, Olivia Dinehart, Elena Dinehart, Javier Colmenares, Jaden Amores, Mackenzie McPherson, Derek Hau, Sebastian Lares, Nat Gembicki, Juan Vallmitjana, Mallory Schleicher and Gabriella DeLuna.

Several Florida Gold Coast teams are entered including Metro Aquatics, Swim Fast, Tsunami Swim, Ransom Everglades, Cyclones Swim Team, Hialeah Storm, Boca Raton Swim Team and Hallandale-based Bravo Swim Team.

In order to prevent the spread of COVID-19, the following protocols are in effect in and around the facility. All people, excluding athletes actively participating in competition, warmup, and warm-down activities in the pool must wear a mask or face covering.

Spectators will only be permitted within a designated area, entering, and exiting through a single gate on the west end of the pool deck, and are encouraged to socially distance.

SOFLO’s Vasquez, Catalasan, Dinehart, Tijero Win In Best Times On Day One Of FGC BB Silver South Long Course Championships

POMPANO BEACH, July 16, 2021—South Florida Aquatic Club captured four events at the Florida Gold Coast BB Silver South Long Course Championships Friday night at Pompano Beach Aquatic Center.

The girls team won three of seven age group races and boys team won one of six races.

Sarah Vasquez, 13, won the 13-14 400-meter freestyle in a best time 4:58.76, dropping 6.45 seconds off her previous best of 5:05.21.

Mariann Catalasan, 15, won the 15-18 400-meter freestyle in a best time of 5:05.50. Her yards entry time was 5:45.93.

Elise Dinehart, 13, won the 13-14 400-meter individual medley in a best time 5:43.34, dropping 17.54 seconds and breaking 6 minutes for the first time. Her previous best was 6:00.88.

Christian Tijero, 15, won the 400-meter individual medley in a best time 5:20.42, dropping 7.41 seconds. His previous best was 5:27.83.

South Florida Aquatic Club heads the field with 57 swimmers (31 boys and 26 girls) in 215 individual events.

Saturday events are: 200-meter butterfly, 100-meter backstroke, 50 freestyle, 50 butterfly, 100 breaststroke and 200 freestyle. Prelims are 9 a.m. and finals 6 p.m.

The 100’s strokes during prelims have been consolidated from separate age groups into one group. So instead of having an 11-12, 13-14, 15-18 100 butterfly, for example, it will be a multi- aged 11-18 100 butterfly in prelims. Finals will swim as 11-12, 13-14, and 15-18.

The meet was cancelled in 2020 because of the pandemic. In 2019, SOFLO won the combined, boys and girls team titles at Sunrise Civic Center.

In addition to SOFLO and host Pompano Beach Piranhas, other FGC teams competing are Hurricanes Swimming, Florida Keys Swim Club, SwimFast, North Miami, Olympus, Cooper City Cyclones, Hialeah, Gulliver, Miami Country Day, Eagle Aquatics, Shelton Doral, Midtown Weston, Metro Aquatics, Blue Marlins of Hialeah Gardens, Miami Swimming and Ransom Everglades.

Meet organizers have a closed deck meet, with a designated area where only swimmers, coaches and volunteers are allowed, and a designated area for family members and spectators to set up their tents and chairs outside the deck.

Parents are asked to come in, watch their swimmer race and then leave the deck to allow space for others to do the same.

Admission and parking are free.

During the competition the latest meet information will be posted on the Piranhas’ website, http://www.pompanopiranhas.com once there click on FGC BB Silver South Championship button there. Results will also be posted on Meet Mobile.

The FGC BB Silver North Long Course Championships are being hosted by Boca Raton Swim Team, also Friday through Saturday. Ten SOFLO Swimmers Will Compete In Southern Zone Open Water Championship This Weekend

HIXSON, Tenn., June 3, 2021—Ten South Florida Aquatic Club swimmers will represent Florida Gold Coast this weekend at the Southern Zone Open Water Championship at Chester Frost Park.

The 2021 Chattanooga Swim Fest will feature the Southern Zone Open Water Championship and Chattanooga Rat Race.

The Southern Zone Open Water Championship is for Zone All-Star Teams selected by their LSC.

Individual races will be held Saturday at 8:15 a.m. and relay races on Sunday on 8:45 a.m. The zone event on Saturday is for swimmers ages 11 and 12 in the 2K; 13 and 14 in the 5K and 15 and 16 and senior open in the 5K.

On Sunday, there is a 1K relay race for 11 and 12; 1.2K relay race for 13 and 14 and 1.2K relay race for open swimmers. Swimmers will check in on Friday and also be able to see the course and warm up. A zoom meeting for athletes and officials will also be held.

The meet, hosted and sponsored by SES Swimming and McCallie/GPS Aquatics, is being held about 30 minutes from downtown Chattanooga. Chester Frost Park is on Lake Chickamauga and Tennessee River, with the greater portion of the park cradling Dallas Bay.

The team was selected off the Florida Gold Coast Open Water Swimming Championship in Pompano Beach.

The FGC will be represented by SOFLO All-Stars Jaden Amores, 13-14; Elise Dinehart, 13-14; Ivan Grass, Open; Ryan Harries, 11-12; Juan Vallmitjana, 11-12; Isabelle Wilson, 15-16; Olivia Wilson, 11-12; Nat Gembicki, 15-16; Leo Mateus, Open and Alejandro Mateus, 15-16.

Other FGC All-Stars are: Reese Andres, Rylie Barnhardt, Adrianna Barone, Lilia Blanco, Addison Byrne, Caleb Caponera, Caleb DaSilva, Andreas DaSilva, Leslie Dame, Julia Freshour, Riley Garcia, Steven Gary, Giovanni Gianfriddo, Ian Meiselman, Francesca Ninova, Bree Silva, Evelyn Smith, Lillian Smith, Marcus Szabo and Lucas Young. The head coach is Cathy Silveira.

Awards will be distributed to the top eight finishers and top three team relays. The top five teams will also be awarded trophies.

The start is an in-water start and finish will be an out-of-water finish chute. The race course is a rectangular in a bay with no current.

Paddlers and escort boats will be spaced throughout the course under the supervision of the race committee to provide help to swimmers as needed. USA Swimming Rules will govern any interaction with escort crafts.

The Central Zone Open Water Championship is June 18-19 in Pleasant Prairie, Wisc. and Eastern Zone Open Water Championship is June 26 at Lake Quassapaug in Middlebury, Ct.

SOFLO Swimmers Shine At Three-Day SoFlo Memorial Day Intrasquad Long Course Challenge

PEMBROKE PINES, May 30, 2021—South Florida Aquatic Club swimmers rose to the occasion at the SoFlo Memorial Day Intrasquad Long Course Challenge at Academic Village Pool.

After the third and final day of competition on Sunday, SOFLO swimmers totaled a one-meet record 131 new long course Junior Olympic qualifying cut times.

After nearly two years of not being able to swim long course meets because of the COVID-19 pandemic, swimmers more than made up for lost time and looked good doing it.

In the girls’ competition, Jemma Baldwin, Elise Dinehart, Jenesys Amores and Nat Gembicki were double winners.

Baldwin, 10, won the 50-meter freestyle in a best time 34.01, dropping 3.76 and 200-meter freestyle, also a best time 2:42.97, dropping an impressive 22.03. The 50- and 200-meter freestyle times were two of four new JO cuts over three days. She also had new cut times in the 400 freestyle and 100 freestyle.

Amores, 12, won the 50-meter freestyle in 31.91 and 50-meter backstroke in 37.60. She had new JO cuts in the 50 butterfly, 100 freestyle, 50 freestyle, 50 backstroke and 200 freestyle.

Dinehart, 12, won the 50-meter breaststroke in a best time 41.50, dropping 5.06 and 200-meter freestyle, another best time in 2:27.17 and whopping 22.72-second time drop. She posted JO cuts in the 400 freestyle, 100 freestyle, 100 breaststroke, 200 IM, 50 breaststroke, 50 freestyle and 200 freestyle.

Gembicki, 16, won the 50-meter freestyle in 29.65 and 200-meter freestyle in 2:18.90.

In the boys’ competition, Jose Rincon, Giorgio Rusconi, Javier Colmenares and Hashan Ekanayake were double winners.

Rincon, 12, won the 50-meter freestyle in a best time 30.46, dropping 6.72 and 100-meter butterfly in 1:13.77. He posted new JO cuts in the 400 freestyle, 50 butterfly, 50 backstroke, 100 freestyle in addition to the 50 freestyle and 100 butterfly.

Rusconi, 14, won the 50-meter breaststroke in 34.80 and 200-meter breaststroke in 2:50.25. He had new JO cuts in the 100 breaststroke and 200 breaststroke.

Colmenares, 14, won the 50-meter freestyle in a best time 25.96, dropping 4.60 and 100-meter butterfly in a best time 1:00.12, dropping 3.90. He had a new JO cut in the 50 freestyle.

Ekanayake, 14, won the 200-meter backstroke in a best time 2:28.11, dropping 8.82 and 200-meter freestyle in 2:09.69, dropping 6.90 seconds. He posted new JO cuts in the 400 freestyle, 100 freestyle, 100 backstroke, 50 freestyle, 200 backstroke and 200 freestyle.

The three-day meet was part of a holiday doubleheader at Academic Village Pool. It gave 114 SOFLO swimmers (64 boys and 50 girls) the opportunity to race long course, fine tune, improve times and make qualifying cuts for various meets.

Between sessions of the two meets, the always-entertaining SOFLO alum and coaches Jack Davies and Jessica Rodriguez came out of retirement briefly for a Battle of the Sexes. Davies just out-touched Rodriguez. “Almost had him,” Rodriguez wrote on social media.

All COVID-19 pandemic safety precautions were observed. The venue was not open to spectators. Face coverings were worn at all times within the venue. Only athletes, coaches, officials and volunteers were allowed on the pool deck.
