SOFLO Heads Field For Canes Spring Long Course Invitational That Begins Friday

CORAL GABLES, May 19, 2022—South Florida Aquatic Club swimmers will get in some long course racing at the Canes Spring Long Course Invitational at University of Miami.

The three-day meet begins Friday at 5:30 p.m. with the 50s events and 800-meter freestyles. The timed final event is expected to end at 9 p.m.

The three-day meet continues on Saturday 9 a.m.-1:47 p.m. and concludes Sunday 9 a.m.-12:35 p.m. All events are timed finals.

Other Florida Gold Coast teams competing are Coral Springs Swim Club, Midtown Weston and host Hurricane Aquatics.

SOFLO has the largest contingent with 99 swimmers (60 boys and 39 girls) in 666 individual events.

Admission is $4 per session, cash only. Heat sheets will not be sold at the meet and are expected to be posted on Meet Mobile and http://www.teamunify.com/fgha which they were not as of 8 p.m. Thursday night.

Masks are encouraged but not required inside all buildings on the University of Miami campus including walking through the Whitten Center to access the pool. Spectators are allowed at the turn end of the pool deck and not the Fate Bridge to watch the meet.

Azura Wins Three Events; SOFLO’s Rodriguez Seventh In Prelims At Puerto Rico International Swimming Open

SALINAS, Puerto Rico, April 23, 2022—Despite a pool water problem that forced Friday’s finals to be moved, swimmers overcame the adversity to swim well Saturday morning.

Four of the finals on Friday had to be rescheduled because of an issue with the pool water being cloudy. The events were moved to another pool and four of the finals were held Saturday morning before Saturday’s prelims.

SOFLO’s Enrique Rodriguez, 17, was seventh in the 400-meter freestyle prelims in 4:16.09 on Friday. The final is being rescheduled because of the pool problem.

SOFLO’s Aldo Zepeda, 16, was 27th in the 100-meter freestyle in 57.23.

Azura Florida Aquatics picked up three more wins.

Top-seeded Julimar Avila, 24, of Honduras won the 100-meter butterfly in 1:02.18. She also won the 50-meter butterfly earlier in the meet in 28.40. She was her country’s only woman swimmer at the 2020 Tokyo Olympics.

Nicole Frank, 18, of Uruguay won the 200-meter breaststroke in 2:34.11. She was second in the 50-meter breaststroke in 33.10. She also competed in the 2020 Tokyo Olympics.

Two-time Olympian Abbas Qali, 29, of Kuwait won the 100-meter butterfly in 54.68. He was the only male swimmer to represent Kuwait at the Olympics.

The four-day meet runs through Sunday. Prelims are 9 a.m. and finals are 5:30 p.m. Saturday and Sunday.

In addition to SOFLO, swimmers from Azura Florida Aquatics (21 swimmers) and Plantation Swim Team (24 swimmers) are among the 35-team field. Swimmers from Mexico, Honduras, Guatemala, Uruguay and Puerto Rico head the field.

The FINA meet is a qualifying event for the May 13-29 19th FINA World Swimming Championship in Hungary and 8th FINA World Junior Swimming Championships.

SOFLO’s Luciano Gonzalez Takes Silver At Puerto Rico International Swimming Open

SALINAS, Puerto Rico, April 21, 2022—Luciano Gonzalez was South Florida Aquatic Club’s top finisher Thursday at the Puerto Rico International Swimming Open at Albergue Olimico German Rieckehoff.

Gonzalez, 27, was SOFLO’s top finisher placing second in the 50-meter butterfly in 25.04. He was fourth fastest in prelims in 25.29.

SOFLO’s Enrique Rodriguez, 17, finished sixth in the 800-meter freestyle in 8:47.40, dropping 10.65 off his previous best of 8:58.05.

SOFLO’s Aldo Zepeda, 16, placed ninth in the 50-meter backstroke prelims in a best time 28.67, dropping 3.73 and came back in finals to finish ninth in 28.83.

Azura Florida Aquatics had three individual winners.

Julimar Avila, 24, Kito Campbell, 18, and Jayhan Odlum-Smith, 19, won individual events.

Avila, the top seed, won the 50-meter butterfly in 28.40.

Campbell, also the fastest morning qualifier, won the 50-meter breaststroke in a best time 28.36, dropping 1.16.

Odlum-Smith, second fastest in morning prelims, won the 50-meter butterfly in 24.63.

The four-day meet runs through Sunday. Prelims are 9 a.m. and finals are 5:30 p.m. Friday, Satuday and Sunday.

SOFLO’s Rendon, Rodriguez, Zepeda Head To Puerto Rico For International Competition

SALINAS, Puerto Rico, April 19, 2022—South Florida Aquatic Club will have three swimmers competing at the Puerto Rico International Swimming Open.

The four-day meet gets underway Thursday and runs through Sunday at Albergue Olimico German Rieckehoff. Thursday events are 5 p.m. for prelims and 8 p.m. for finals. Prelims are 9 a.m. and finals are 5:30 p.m. Friday, Satuday and Sunday.

Wisthon Rendon, 17, Enrique Rodriguez, 17, and Aldo Zepeda, 16, will compete in the international meet. The trio will each compete in six events.

Pompano Beach Wins First-Ever Region 4-2A Boys Title; Gulliver Prep Wins Girls Crown; Somerset’s Enrique Rodriguez Top SOFLO Finisher

STUART, October 30, 2021—Pompano Beach made history winning its first boys title in the Region 4-2A Swimming and Diving Championship Saturday at Sailfish Splash Waterpark.

The Tornadoes, with two runner-up finishes in the 200- and 400-yard freestyle relays, won with 207.5 points. Mater Lakes was second with 192.5 and Somerset was third with 178 points.

Gulliver Prep, with two relay wins and one individual win, won the girls title with 353 points. Cape Coral was second with 245.5 and Jensen Beach was third with 224 points.

Somerset junior Enrique Rodriguez of South Florida Aquatic Club won the 500-yard freestyle in 4:41.79 and was second in the 200-yard individual medley in 2:00.04.

SOFLO’s Aldo Zepeda, also a junior at Somerset, was second in the 100-yard backstroke in 53.02.

SOFLO’s Matthew Tarafa, Anthony Martinez and Agustin Rodriguez were members of Mater Academy’s winning 200-yard freestyle relay that won in 1:27.96. Ronny Rueda was the other relay member. The foursome also won the 400-yard freestyle relay in 3:11.88.

Tarafa was also second in the 200-yard freestyle in 1:44.38 and Rodriguez was third in 1:45.41. Martinez was fifth in the 100-yard butterfly in 53.50. Tarafa was fifth in the 100-yard freestyle in 48.03. Rodriguez was third in the 500-yard freestyle in 4:46.78.

SOFLO teammate Anthony Robaina of Mater Academy was second in the 100-yard breaststroke in 1:00.73.

Pompano Beach relied on relay talent and depth. The 200-yard freestyle relay of sophomore Gianni Famiano, junior Charles Wingold, junior Steven Gary and senior Joshua Cajuste was second in 1:28.67.

The 400-yard freestyle relay of sophomore Giuliano Brunetti, Cajuste, Famiano and Gary was second in 3:14.13.

Cajuste tied for second with Aria Besharat of Mourning in the 50-yard freestyle in 21.59, just 1/100th of a second behind John Trieu in 21.58. He was also third in the 100-yard freestyle in 47.20.

Pompano Beach is coached by Rogesterman Farris and Gainus Wright. Several of the swimmers are also coached by Hall of Famer and Olympian Jesse Vassallo of Pompano Beach Piranhas.

Gulliver Prep, runner-up to Pine Crest last year, reclaimed its region title with wins in the 200-yard medley and 200-yard freestyle relays. The medley relay won in 1:48.73 with Giovanna Musiello, Reese Rosenthal, Elyse Wood and Cassandra Kraft. The 200 free relay won in the 1:39.83 with Rosenthal, Wood, Aria Torretta and Kraft.

Gulliver Prep’s 400-yard freestyle relay was second in 3:37.09 with Musiello, Camila Saporta, Wood and Torretta.

Wood also won the 100-yard butterfly in 56.62.

U.S. junior national team member Blair Stoneburg of Jensen Beach was a double winner in the 200-yard freestyle in 1:50.96 and 500-yard freestyle in 4:53.28.

The State 2A meet is Friday at Sailfish Splash Waterpark.

Pompano Beach Boys, Jensen Beach Girls Win District 11-2A Titles; Aldo Zepeda Top SOFLO Finisher

STUART, OCTOBER 23, 2021—Pompano Beach boys and Jensen Beach girls captured the District 11-2A Swimming and Diving Championships Saturday at Sailfish Splash Waterpark.

Pompano Beach edged Suncoast, 346-342 to win the boys’ title.

Jensen Beach won with 365 points ahead of Suncoast with 305 and Pompano Beach third with 285.

Somerset junior Aldo Zepeda was South Florida Aquatic Club’s top finisher placing second in the 100-yard backstroke in 55.68. Cardinal Gibbons sophomore Marcus Szabo won in 55.05.

Other top three SOFLO finishers were also Somerset Academy swimmers. They were Diego Nazario-Vazquez, third in the 100-yard butterfly in 56.55 and third in the 100-yard backstroke in 59.30. Enrique Rodriguez was third in the 500-yard freestyle in 4:52.51. Giorgio Rusconi was third in the 100-yard breaststroke in 1:05.08.

U.S. National Junior team member Blair Stoneburg, a senior, led the Jensen Beach girls’ team. She won the 200-yard freestyle in 1:49.65 and 500-yard freestyle in 4:49.75.

Younger sister Brynn Stoneburg, a sophomore, won the 100-yard backstroke in 59.87. The sisters book-ended the winning 200- and 400-yard freestyle relays with Blair leading off and Brynn anchoring.

Lilia Blanco was a double winner for Pompano Beach in the 200-yard individual medley in 2:14.57 and 100-yard butterfly in 1:00.25. Teammate Reese Andres won the 100-yard breaststroke in 1:06.37.

Other individual Broward girls winners were Jaclyn Nelson of Cardinal Gibbons in the 50-yard freestyle in 25.31 and Eva Pierre-Antoine of American Heritage Plantation in the 100-yard freestyle in 56.98.

Pompano Beach clinched the boys’ title winning the 400-yard freestyle relay in 3:16.59 with Giuliano Brunetti, Gianna Famiano, Joshua Cajuste and Steven Gary. The Tornadoes also won the 200-yard freestyle relay in 1:29.10 with Charles Wingold, Gianni Famiano, Joshua Cajuste and Steven Gary.

Steven Gary was a double winner for the Tornadoes in the 200-yard freestyle in 1:47.40 and 500-yard freestyle in 4:49.82.

Famiano and Alessandro Pereira of American Heritage Plantation tied for first in the 200-yard individual medley in 2:01.41.

Cardinal Gibbons sophomore Marcus Szabo was a double winner in the 100-yard butterfly in 52.18 and 100-yard backstroke in 55.05.

American Heritage Plantation won the 200-yard medley relay in 1:44.88 with Rithvik Marri, Daniel Burg, Alessandro Pereira and Kirill Prikhodko.

The Region 4-2A meet is Saturday, Oct. 30 at 9 a.m. at Sailfish Splash Park. The qualifiers will be posted on the fhsaa.org website on Sunday.

Pine Crest Panthers Sweep NSU University School, Somerset In First Tri-Meet Of The Season

FORT LAUDERDALE, September 10, 2021—After competing in the Westminster Academy Relays and having its first meet cancelled because of bad weather, Pine Crest won its season-opening tri-meet Friday.

Pine Crest girls defeated NSU University School, 131-47, and Somerset Academy, 133-41.

Pine Crest boys edge NSU University School, 102-80, and topped Somerset Academy, 133-41.

The girls were led by double winner Isabella Chambers. The 17-year-old won the 200-yard freestyle in 1:57.68 and 100-yard freestyle in 54.82.

Pine Crest swept all three girls relays and won every individual event.

Ava Anderson won the 1-meter diving with 165.25 points.

The boys’ competition had more parity.

NSU University School swept all three relays. NSU University also had four individual winners: Max Fermayer, Marcelo Carrion, Karl Aimable and Michele Vandenbossche.

Diver Allen Levitis and swimmers Colin Nealy and Ronin Jones won individual events for Pine Crest.

Somerset’s Enrique Rodriguez and Aldo Zepeda also won individual events.

In one of the more exciting races of the day, Pine Crest teammates Lara Jones and Riley Botting battled it out in a close 100-yard breaststroke with Jones edging Botting, 1:09.16-1:09.64.

In another exciting race, Somerset’s Enrique Rodriguez out-touched Kingsley Bailey of Pine Crest in the 500-yard freestyle, 4:55.25-4:55.28.

In another close race, NSU University School’s Max Fermayer outsprinted Kingsley Bailey of Pine Crest to win the 200-yard freestyle, 1:49.01-1:49.81.

Broward Swimmer of the Year Julia Podkoscielny of Pine Crest did not swim. She was on a recruiting trip at University of Texas. She has already visited University of Florida.

Somerset Academy Sweeps NSU University School, North Broward Prep

COCONUT CREEK, September 2, 2021–Somerset Academy Panthers swept NSU University School and host North Broward Prep in a Wednesday tri-meet.

Somerset girls defeated North Broward Prep, 93-51, and NSU University School, 81-75. In the other matchup, NSU University School topped North Broward Prep, 89-53.

In the boys’ competition, Somerset downed North Broward Prep, 93-58, and NSU University School, 85-70. In the other matchup NSU defeated North Broward Prep, 90-59.

Mariana Pinto, Isabella Hernandez and Sabrina Osorio were double winners for Somerset.

Pinto won the 200-yard freestyle in 2:09.56 and 500-yard freestyle in 5:45.03.

Hernandez won the 50-yard freestyle in 25.06 and 100-yard freestyle in 58.11.

Osorio won the 200-yard individual medley in 2:30.09 and 100-yard breaststroke in 1:18.81.

Enrique Rodriguez and Aldo Zepeda were double winners for the Somerset boys team.

Rodriguez won the 200-yard individual medley in 2:05.25 and 500-yard freestyle in 5:02.50.

Zepeda won the 100-yard freestyle in 50.10 and 100-yard backstroke in 56.31.

For NSU University School, Yardena Rubin was a double winner in the 200-yard freestyle in 2:08.72 and 500-yard freestyle in 5:42.25. Rafaella Araujo also won two events in the 200-yard individual medley in 2:20.06 and 100-yard breaststroke in 1:11.69.

SOFLO’s Colmenares, Rodriguez Top Four Finishes On Final Day Of CCCAN Championships; Puerto Rico Wins Team Title

SAN JUAN, Puerto Rico, June 27, 2021–Javier Colmenares and Enrique Rodriguez, both representing Venezuela internationally, ended a long meet on a successful note Sunday at the Central American and Caribbean Amateur Swimming Confederation Championships at San Juan Aquatic Complex.

Rodriguez, 16, was fourth in the 15-17 400-meter freestyle in 4:14.85. Rodriguez swam a best time of 4:14.36 in prelims, bettering his previous best of 4:15.30. His best event finish during the meet was second in the 200-meter butterfly in a best time 2:12.56, a time drop of 1.81.

Colmenares, 14, was third in the 100-meter butterfly in a lifetime-best 59.88. It was the first time he cracked 1 minute in the event. He dropped 0.24 off his entry time of 1:00.12. He was also fourth in the 13-14 50-meter breaststroke in 31.13 after going a best time 30.76 in prelims, dropping 0.38. His previous best was 31.14.

El Salvador’s Marcelo Acosta, 24, who trains with Azura, won the 400-meter freestyle in 3:58.51.

Cypress Bay High School’s Nicol Bellardi, 15, of Venezuela won the 200-meter backstroke in a best time 2:23.43, shaving 2.04 off her previous best of 2:25.47.

Puerto Rico’s Yeziel Morales, 24, who trains with Azura, won the 200-meter backstroke in 1:59.39, the FINA “B” cut for Tokyo.

Kristen Romano, 21, of Puerto Rico won the 200-meter backstroke in a best time 2:13.75, another FINA “B” cut for the Tokyo Olympics and meet record.

Puerto Rico dominated the field of 14 countries to win the team title with 1,579 points after the completion of individual events. Venezuela was second with 744.

The CCCAN Championships are a biennial aquatics championship for countries in Central America and the Caribbean. The name of the event comes from the event’s organizers: the Central American & Caribbean Swimming Confederation, whose abbreviated name is CCCAN.

NASSAU—Three-time Panama Olympian Edgar Crespo fell short of qualifying for the Tokyo Olympics in his final attempt. Crespo, 31, went 1:02.10 in the 100-meter breaststroke time trial. The FINA “B” cut was 1:01.73 and “A” cut 59.93. Sunday was the final day for swimmers to qualify. Honduras’ Julio Horrego, already qualified in the 100 breaststroke with a “B” cut, went 1:01.18 in an exhibition final.

SOFLO’s Javier Colmenares, Enrique Rodriguez Swim Best Times, Finish Runners-up On Day Four Of CCCAN Championships; Puerto Rico Leads Team Standings

SAN JUAN, Puerto Rico, June 26, 2021–Venezuela’s Javier Colmenares of South Florida Aquatic Club turned in another best time at the Central American and Caribbean Amateur Swimming Confederation Championships Saturday at San Juan Aquatic Complex.

Colmenares, 14, was second in the 13-14 400-meter individual medley in a lifetime-best 4:48.76, shaving 3.07 seconds off his previous best of 4:51.83. Colmenares has had best times in every event he has competed in.

Colmenares has the 50-meter breaststroke and 100-meter butterfly left to swim on Sunday.

Puerto Rico’s Miguel Cancel, 21, of University of Florida and SOFLO had the fastest qualifying time in the 400-meter individual medley in a best time 4:21.26, lowering his entry time of 4:28 by 6.74 seconds. He finished second in finals in 4:21.91.

SOFLO’s Enrique Rodriguez, 16, of Venezuela was second in the 200-meter butterfly in a best time 2:12.56, dropping 1.81 seconds.

SOFLO’s Andrea Santander, 19, of Venezuela was sixth in the 50-meter freestyle in 27.21 after going 27.08 in morning prelims.

Puerto Rico’s Yeziel Morales, 24, of Azura Florida Aquatics won the 100-meter backstroke in a best time 55.09, under the FINA Olympic “B” cut of 55.47 and meet record. Venezuela’s Alfonso Mestre, 19, of University of Florida earned the FINA Olympic “A” cut in the 800-meter freestyle (7:54.31) in 7:50.81, an official split time off the 1500 meters and also broke his own national record.

In other notable swims, Puerto Rico’s Jarod Arroyo set a national record in the 200 IM in 2:00.61. Xavier Ruiz of Puerto Rico set a national record in the 100-meter breaststroke in 1:04.53.

After Saturday night’s individual events, Puerto Rico has a huge lead in the team standings with 1,202 points. Venezuela is second with 516.5.

The CCCAN Championships are a biennial aquatics championship for countries in Central America and the Caribbean. The name of the event comes from the event’s organizers: the Central American & Caribbean Swimming Confederation, whose abbreviated name is CCCAN.
