SOFLO, MWA Swimmers Dominate Michael’s Memorial Meet

By Sharon Robb
WESTON, September 13, 2021—South Florida Aquatic Club swimmers got in some much-welcomed racing against a strong field Saturday at the Michael’s Memorial Meet.

The meet, hosted by Midtown Weston Aquatics Club at Midtown Athletics Club, went from a two-day to one-day timed finals event because of bad weather.

SOFLO’s Amelie Bicerne, Benjamin Kim and Eric Ferrer were triple winners for SOFLO.

Among SOFLO’s champions were:

Isabella Montes, 13, 200-yard butterfly 2:31.77; 100-yard butterfly 1:06.43.

Amelie Bicerne, 13, 100-yard backstroke 1:07.51; 200-yard freestyle 2:06.74; 200-yard backstroke 2:20.45.

Gianna Martin, 10, 100-yard breaststroke 1:23.53; 200-yard freestyle 2:34.65.

Sofia Lugo, 12, 200-yard freestyle 2:12.45.

Benjamin Kim, 14, 100-yard backstroke 1:04.94; 100-yard breaststroke 1:11.40; 200-yard breaststroke 2:33.01.

Eric Ferrer, 10, 50-yard freestyle 29.15; 200-yard freestyle 2:22.93; 50-yard backstrokle 36.37.

Joshua Menezes, 12, 100-yard breaststroke 1:16.11.

Carlos Rincon, 14, 200-yard freestyle 2:02.21.

SOFLO had 65 swimmers (37 boys and 28 girls) in 328 individual events.

In addition to host Midtown Weston and SOFLO, Ransom-Everglades and Plantation Swim Team also competed. The meet was capped at 300 swimmers.

The meet was held in honor of Michael Fish. Since 2013, the Florida Gold Coast local swimming committee has scheduled the Michael’s Memorial Meet in September as a tribute to “a great man who loved the sport of swimming.”

Michael Fish was hit by a drunk driver the morning of May 14, 2011, while riding his bike and was pronounced dead the next day. He was survived by his wife Kathy and their children Jared and Hannah.

To raise awareness every year, Mothers Against Drunk Drivers (MADD) organizes a 5K walk/run to pay tribute and raise funds to help families of victims of drunk driving. MWA donated the Athlete Surcharge ($5 per swimmer) to the organization. All donations will go to Walk Like MADD for FISH on behalf of Fish Family.

Meet officials have taken enhanced health and safety measures for the swimmers, coaches and officials.

Spectators will not be permitted in designated areas of the pool deck unless they are registered with USA Swimming as an athlete or as a non-athlete, and they are working the meet. The only exception is for timers and volunteers assisting with the meet. Coaches are permitted in all areas of the pool deck.

The meet is in honor of Michael Fish.

Kathy Fish is Assistant Chair of the FGC Officials Committee and meet referee for this event.

To raise awareness every year, Mothers Against Drunk Drivers (MADD) organizes a 5K walk/run to pay tribute and raise funds to help families of victims of drunk driving. The meet host will donate the Athlete Surcharge ($5 per swimmer) to the organization. All donations will go to Walk Like MADD for FISH on behalf of Fish Family.

TYR FEBRUARY BOY SWIMMER OF THE MONTH: Eric Ferrer

By Sharon Robb
PEMBROKE PINES, March 25, 2021–Eric Ferrer found his favorite sport and it’s swimming.

Ferrer, 10, a fourth grader at Pembroke Pines West Elementary School, trains with Coach Luis Soler and the Asteroids.

Ferrer has been swimming with South Florida Aquatic Club for nearly three years and is improving with every meet. At last month’s Florida Gold Coast Short Course Yards BB Silver Championships South, Ferrer made four Junior Olympic cuts

“I didn’t like any of the other sports like soccer, it just got boring,” Ferrer explained.

After he was involved in taekwondo for five years and earned a black belt at age 9, his mom suggested swimming. Ferrer said taekwondo helped him with swimming with his “flexibility, confidence, muscles and strength.”

Ferrer and is younger brother Gabriel, a SOFLO Dipper, turned out to be naturals in the sport.

“I can to talk to my friends,” said Ferrer when asked what he likes so much about swimming. “I can get very competitive and I like that.”

Swimming also helps with time management and discipline, Ferrer said. He trains Monday, Wednesday and Friday, 5:30-7 p.m and Tuesday and Thursday, 7-8:30.

While he does every stroke and most events except the 100 butterfly and 500 freestyle, his favorite is the backstroke. He said his biggest meets have been BBs and JOs and attributed his success to several factors. He said his mom was a big help making him healthy smoothies before BBs and JOs.

“My mom’s good drinks with bananas and beets, stretching and practice,” Ferrer said. “I really liked JOs because having to come back for finals was fun. It was really hard swimming morning and night. I was tired but it was a good experience.”

Ferrer has several goals for the future including “getting 11-12 JOs cuts, to move up to Bronze and work on my breaststroke.”

Between school and swimming, Ferrer likes to bike and reads a lot, he said. Currently, he is reading Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix.

His mom and swimming chaffeur, Lily Ferrer said “We are very proud of him. He works really hard.

“He had already maxed out on taekwondo so we were looking for something more of an overall workout,” she said.

“We had friends that used to be a part of the club and told us about it. He had been swimming already since he was 5 so we figured that would be the next best move for him. Something individual but at the same time a team-oriented sport.”

Each TYR Swimmer of the Month receives a free TYR backpack.

SOFLO sponsor TYR is a USA manufacturer of recreational and competitive swimwear, caps, goggles, triathlon gear and accessories and one of the nation’s top companies.
