Jacob Walters of West Broward led the SOFLO boys with his best time and 12th place finish in the 100-yard butterfly in 52.37, bettering his prelim time of 52.79 and previous best of 52.95.

Lopez, who along with her SOFLO teammates will compete next in the FGC Winter Championships in Plantation, was thrilled and encouraged by her performance at state particularly her first championship finals debut.

“I am really, really happy, I couldn’t be happier,” Lopez said. “I went a best time by a lot. I wasn’t really happy with my morning swim and I knew I could do better. In finals, I felt good in the water. I was sort of nervous about my turns but I’ve been working on them with Coach.

“I was happy with my finish, it’s the first time I made finals at state. The last two years I made “B” finals. I’ve been working really, really hard waking up at 4:30 for morning practice. It’s totally worth it. I had a lot of fun at the state meet. It’s not really intimidating, there’s a lot of good swimmers there. Everyone is really nice there and a lot of them are my friends. This motivates me definitely because I am getting closer to my junior national cut.”

SOFLO’s Kylie Herman and Haley Wright were members of Cypress Bay’s 12th-place 400-yard freestyle relay. Carly Swanson and Herman were also members of Cypress Bay’s 12th-place 200-yard freestyle relay bettering their morning prelim time.

In the team competition, Boca Raton High School won its first ever boys title with 258 points ahead of Palm Harbor with 247. The Bobcats had been state runners-up in 1997 in Class 5A and 2008 in Class 2A. Jason McCormick won the 50- and 100-yard freestyles and was a member of the winning 200- and 400-yard freestyle relays, all in All-American automatic times.

Sarasota Riverview defended its girls team title by more than 100 points with three event titles and a runnerup with 256 points. Senior Taylor Katz won the 200- and 500-yard freestyles. It is the team’s sixth state title in seven years.
