Creekside Girls, Oviedo Boys Capture FHSAA State 4A Team Titles; SOFLO’s Dominic Bono Posts Two Best Times

By Sharon Robb

STUART, November 7, 2020–Creekside girls and Oviedo boys won the team titles in the FHSAA State 4A Swimming and Diving Championship Saturday at Sailfish Splash Waterpark.

St. John’s Creekside, runners-up last year, won the girls title with 271 points followed by defending girls champion Oviedo with 246. Miami Palmetto, the only girls team from South Florida in the field, was 23rd with 16 points. Defending girls state champion Buchholz was sixth with 118.

Two-time defending boys state champion Oviedo won its third consecutive boys title with 216 points followed by Creekside with 192.5. Miami Palmetto was 12th with 77 points.

Oviedo was hoping to sweep the boys and girls team titles. Not since 1995 when Dr. Phillips swept has a high school won the team titles in the same year.

“We really don’t talk about winning the state championship, we really don’t,” Oviedo 26-year coach Charlie Rose told the Orlando Sentinel. “We know it’s there. What we have to do, hopefully, individually, everybody goes in and do the best they can do, do their part. If that happens, then the potential is there for us to win it. We know that.”

South Florida Aquatic Club’s Dominic Bono, a senior at Coral Reef, made his final state meet appearance. He was 11th in the 200-yard individual medley in 1:55.05. He was ninth fastest qualifier in prelims in a best time 1:54.33.

Bono also finished 16th in the 500-yard freestyle in 4:46.28. In prelims, he posted a best time of 4:44.62.

SOFLO teammate Garrett Oliver of Miami Palmetto competed on two relays. He swam the second leg on the 200-yard medley relay that qualified 11th in 1:38.27 and finished 10th in 1:38.47. He also swam the second leg on the 200-yard freestyle relay that qualified sixth in 1:28.94 and finished fifth in 1:28.61.

There were three girls double winners.

University of Florida-bound senior Micayla Cronk of Flagler Palm Coast won the 200-yard freestyle in 1:46.23 and 100-yard freestyle in 48.78.

University of Virginia commit and Olympic Trials qualifier Ella Bathurst of Tampa Plant won the 200-yard individual medley in 1:58.24 and 100-yard backstroke in 52.77.

Auburn commit Lexie Mulvihill of George Steinbrenner High School in Lutz, won the 50-yard freestyle in 22.22 and 100-yard butterfly in 53.16.

2021 Olympic Trials qualifiers Addison Sauickie and Gracie Weyant, both of Sarasota Riverview, won individual events. Sauickie won the 500-yard freestyle in 4:47.23. Weyant won the 100-yard breaststroke in 1:01.51.

For the boys, Liam Custer of Sarasota Riverview and Dawson Joyce of Seminole were double winners.

Custer won the 200-yard individual medley in 1:47.41 and 500-yard freestyle in 4:21.41.

Joyce won the 50-yard freestyle in 19.79 and 100-yard freestyle in 43.59.

Olympia senior Brandon Wegner won the boys 1-meter diving title with 490.90 points. Boone freshman Lanie Gutch won the girls 1-meter title with 468.60.

Because of the delayed season because of COVID-19, several public schools from Broward, Palm Beach and Miami-Dade opted out of the state series and did not compete.

Oviedo Sweeps State 4A Girls, Boys Team Titles; Broward Shut Out Of State Titles; Boca Raton Girls Finish Third

By Sharon Robb

STUART, November 15, 2019—Oviedo High School’s swim program made a little more history at the FHSAA State 4A Swimming and Diving Championships Friday at Sailfish Splash Waterpark and Aquatics Center.

The boys team, surprise winners last year winning its first state title in the program’s history, defended its title and won a second crown.

Even better, the girls team joined them winning its first girls title.

The boys topped a field of 44 teams with 214 points. Sanford Seminole and Sarasota Riverview tied for second with 177 points. Jupiter was top Palm Beach finisher placing fifth with 145 points and Deerfield Beach was top Broward team placing 17th with 32 points.

The girls team, runners-up last year by a slim margin, topped a field of 38 girls teams to win with 333 points. Creekside was second with 198 and Boca Raton was third with 167. Cypress Bay was top Broward team placing 11th with 79 points.

The last time an Orlando-area school won boys and girls swim championships in the same year was Dr. Phillips in 1995. It’s also the first time a girls team from the Orlando area has won a state title in 16 years. Lake Brantley last won in 2003.

“This year, we all have worked a lot harder to become close as a team,” Oviedo senior Abigail Gibbons, an Auburn commit, told the Orlando Sentinel. “We’re all fast kids, we’ve all been good at something, but you can’t do anything if you don’t believe in the team.

“So it’s something we worked for. We wanted it more than ever now, especially that we watched the boys get first place last year and girls got runner-up.”

It was a disastrous night for Broward County teams and swimmers. No boy or girl individual swimmer or relay finished in the Top 3 in any event.

South Florida Aquatic Club’s Gaby Banks of Cypress Bay was top finisher placing fifth in the 50-yard freestyle in 23.38. Banks represents Jamaica internationally. Banks also led off Cypress Bay’s fifth place 200-yard freestyle relay that finished in 1:37.21 along with SOFLO teammate Jacqueline Lugo, Nicol Ballardi and SOFLO teammate Paige Lane.

Boca Raton sophomore Emilie Moore won the girls 1-meter diving title with 450.45 points and helped her girls team finish third.

Jupiter senior Tyler Coffey won the boys 1-meter diving title with 509.85 points. Cooper City’s Tyler Flowers was third with 453.35.

Boca Raton boys and Jupiter girls won the team titles at the Region 3-4A Swimming and Diving Championships at Boca Raton Aquatic Center.

The boys team won the region team title for the eighth consecutive year with 336 points. St. Thomas Aquinas was runner-up with 301 and Jupiter was third with 260.

The girls team was third with 285 points. Jupiter won the team title with 388 and St. Thomas Aquinas was runner-up with 288.5.

Against a fast, competitive field from Palm Beach and Broward, the Bobcats broke three school records. They were:

Freshman Paige MacEachern, winning the 200-yard individual medley in 2:06.11, breaking the previous record of 2:06.13 set by Natalie Pike in 2003. MacEachern was also second in the 100-yard breaststroke in 1:06.52.

Junior Cameron Taddonio, winning the 500-yard freestyle in 4:31.70 breaking the previous mark of 4:34.22 set by Brady Eldridge in 1993. It was also Taddonio’s first USA Swimming junior national cut. Taddonio was also second in the 200-yard freestyle in 1:41.79.

Senior Jose Garcia, winning the 100-yard backstroke in 52.40 breaking the old record of 52.54 set by Alejandro Vassallo in 2013. Garcia was also second in the 100-yard butterfly in 51.06.

The boys relied on talent and depth to win the region crown. The Bobcat girls were just as successful with a win in the 200-yard medley relay and two individual victories.

The top two in each event plus relay winners automatically advanced to Class 4A state meet on Friday at Sailfish Splashpark Aquatic Athletics Center in Stuart. The remaining qualifiers were chosen on the next fastest times in region meets around the state.
