Metro Aquatic Club Of Miami Knocks Off Defending Champion SOFLO In FGC Senior Championships; SOFLO’s Golding, Rodriguez Win High Point

By Sharon Robb

PEMBROKE PINES, March 26, 2018—SOFLO swimmers Kathleen Golding and Rafael Rodriguez, team leaders throughout the Florida Gold Coast Senior Championships, finished as high point award winners Sunday at Academic Village Pool.

The pair played a key role in SOFLO’s runner-up finish in the combined and boys team standings and third place in the girls team standings.

Golding accumulated 209 points, the second most of any girl swimmer. Chade Nersicio of East Coast Aquatic Club was top high point winner with 210 points.

Rodriguez totaled 204 points, the most of any boy swimmer in both age groups.

Defending champion SOFLO fell 33.50 points shy defending its title in the combined and boys team standings. SOFLO was trying to make history by winning both seniors and JO titles in the same short course season for the sixth time in the team’s 18-year history.

“Our kids swam well, we just came up short,” SOFLO head coach Chris Anderson said. “We had a lot of good individual swims.”

Metro Aquatic Club of Miami knocked off the meet host, winning the combined team title with 2,620.50. SOFLO was second with 2,587. MAC won the boys team title with 1,944 ahead of SOFLO with 1,407.

Gulliver Swim Team won the girls team title with 1,729.50. East Coast Aquatic Club was second with 1,612 and SOFLO was third with 1,180. Defending champion Pine Crest was fourth with 725.50.

It was the first time MAC won the combined team title in more than 20 years, in 1997. Several members of the team were off Miami Belen’s fifth place state 3A team.

“It’s been a long time,” said MAC and Miami Belen veteran coach Kirk Peppas. “We won it the first couple of years when it was a young competition. The Gold Coast has grown so much in seniors and is very competitive.”

MAC clinched the title in the final boys’ event, placing one-two in the 400-yard medley relay. Nine of the swimmers were coming off last weekend’s National Club Swimming Association Meet (NCSA) at Orlando YMCA.

“The kids never thought we had a shot until they looked at the heat sheets,” Peppas said. “The leadership kicked in, they got pumped up and pulled it off. I am happy for the kids. It was a really good group effort. I didn’t know they would do this. It all came down to the relays. It was fun. It’s a good way to end the meet.

“Aitor did a good job of making sure everyone did their part. Everybody stepped up, everyone was together and that’s what makes a team, a team. They all pushed each other.”

Metro Aquatic Club of Miami was led by top swimmers Nestor Montero, 16, Andres Wong, 15, Alejandro Timp, 16, Aaron Rodriguez, 16, Brandon Vives, 18, team leader Aitor Fungairino, 17, and Adrian Aguilar, 17, Stephanie Suarez, 16, and Anelis Roque, 14.

Visiting coaches and parents were impressed by the meet’s atmosphere and organization including Peppas.

“People were into it, there was more of a fun, relaxed atmosphere with everybody, it wasn’t just another championship meet,” Peppas said. “Everyone was entertained. The parents were involved, the music was good, everyone was pumped up. It was a good scenario. Chris did a good job of putting on a good meet.”

Among SOFLO swimmer Sunday highlights:

Golding swam the second fastest time in the pool ever in the 200-yard individual medley in a best time 1:58.58. Golding won the 50-yard butterfly in 24.58, another best time and 50-yard freestyle in 23.04.

Golding was also a member of the winning 400-yard medley relay in 3:49.42 and second-place 200-yard medley relay in 1:46.76 with teammates Kelley Heron, Jennifer Rodriguez and Paige Lane.

Heron was third in the 200 IM in 2:06.57.

Rodriguez closed out an outstanding meet. He won the 1,650-yard freestyle in 15:51.48. Teammate Ricardo Roche was second in the event in 16:04.52 and Leonardo Mateus was third in 16:22.32.

Rodriguez was also second in the 50-yard freestyle in a best time 21.82.

Lance Lesage was third in the 100-yard backstroke in 52.81.

SOFLO took a pair of thirds in both the 200- and 400-yard medley relays.

The morning session on Sunday was held in memory of TS Aquatics swimmer Nicholas Dworet and 16 other victims killed in the Marjory Stoneman Douglas mass shooting. Seventeen balloons were tied to the lane lines during prelims.

Parents, swimmers and spectators were also treated each day to the National Anthem in unique presentations including a beautiful violin rendition by talented SOFLO swimmer Joseph Lee and well-choreographed lane swim out by SOFLO swimmers with TYR patriotic kickboards, U.S. flag and wearing USA flag swim caps during the anthem.

SOFLO Swimmers Have Banner Second Day At Senior Championships; Donahue Breaks FGC Record

By Sharon Robb

March 19, 2015—South Florida Aquatic Club emphasized the “team” in total team effort on the second day of competition at the Florida Gold Coast Senior Championships Saturday at windswept Academic Village Pool.

From former world champion Megan Romano and Olympic gold medalist Claire Donahue to Carly Swanson and Kelley Heron, nearly every SOFLO swimmer came up with big swims and lifetime-best times on a windy day.

And thanks to that total team effort, the defending champions lead the combined and women’s team standings for the second day in a row.

SOFLO leads combined with 1,698.5 points going into the third and final day on Sunday. Gulliver, led by Miguel Cancel, and T2 Aquatics of Naples are tied for second with 1,566.

SOFLO leads the women’s team standings with 945.5 points. Gulliver is second with 856.6 and T2 Aquatics is third with 657. T2 Aquatics leads the men’s team standings with 909. SOFLO is second with 753 and Gulliver is third with 709.5 points.

Donahue and Romano, training for the U.S. Olympic trials, both had “sweet times” according to SOFLO head coach Chris Anderson.

Donahue, 27, broke the Florida Gold Coast record in the 100-yard butterfly, winning in a best time 51.92, shaving 4.06 seconds off her entry time of 55.98.

Romano, 25, won the 200-yard freestyle in a best time 1:44.89, dropping 2.03 seconds off her entry time of 1:46.92. She was also second in the 50-yard backstroke in 25.72, dropping 0.75.

Kathleen Golding, 15, was a double winner. The U.S. Olympic Trials qualifier won the 400-yard individual medley in 4:20.07 and 200-yard freestyle in a best time 1:49.46. Golding was also second in the 100-yard butterfly in 56.27.

Swanson, 18, had two impressive time drops. She swam the 200-yard freestyle in 1:58.87, shaving 4.43 seconds off her previous best of 2:03.30. It was the first time Swanson cracked the 2-minute barrier in her swimming career. She finished the 50-yard backstroke in 29.26, dropping 1.13 seconds from her previous best of 30.39, swimming a sub-30 for the first time.

Heron, 16, finished sixth in the 400-yard individual medley in a best time 4:34.74, dropping 6.34 seconds off her previous best of 4:41.08. She was also third in the 50-yard backstroke in 27.37, dropping 0.34 off her seed time of 27.71.

Alia Atkinson, 27, was also a double winner. The three-time Jamaican Olympian won the 50-yard backstroke in 25.45. Teammate Catalina Mendieta was fourth in a best time 27.27 and fourth in the 100-yard butterfly in 56.51, another best time. Atkinson also won the 200-yard breaststroke in 2:09.28.

Kile Aukerman, 23, continues to show remarkable improvement since training with SOFLO. The post-grad won the 200-yard breaststroke in a best time of 1:59.60, shaving 13.69 seconds off his best time of 2:13.29 and first time he cracked 2 minutes.

Aukerman was also fourth in the 100-yard butterfly in 50.82, another best time and impressive time drop of 11.91.

Ricardo Roche, 16, was fourth in the 400-yard individual medley in a best time 4:09.09 with a huge time drop of 15.09 bettering his previous best of 4:24.18. Golding, Roche, Rojas Lead SOFLO On Day Two Of FGC Senior Championships

By Sharon Robb

July 18, 2015—South Florida Aquatic Club rebounded after a slow start at the Florida Gold Coast Senior Championships Saturday at the Michael Lohberg Pool of Champions.

Kathleen Golding, 14, was second in the open 100-meter butterfly in a best time 1:03.28 to lead the girls’ team. Her previous best was 1:04.92. Her prelim swim was 1:03.61, second fastest qualifying time.

Marc Rojas, 21, a senior at Florida State, was second in the open 200-meter breaststroke in 2:25.91.

Ricardo Roche, 15, was third in the 15-16 400-meter individual medley in a lifetime-best 4:50.73, dropping 15.74 off his previous best.

Two swimmers made U.S. Olympic trials cut times and another broke a Florida Gold Coast record.

Eric Williams, 24, of Boca Raton Swim Team qualified in the 50-meter freestyle. Swimming leadoff leg of the 200-meter freestyle relay, Williams swam a blistering 23.11 split, well under the qualifying standard of 23.29.

Williams plans to step up his training over the next year leading up to the June 26-July 3 trials at the Omaha CenturyLink Center.

Nick Carter, 25, of Gulliver Prep also got his U.S. Olympic cut in the 200-meter backstroke in 2:03.64.

Jessica Nava, 15, of Pine Crest Swimming, broke the Florida Gold Coast record in the 100-meter butterfly in 1:01.25. She broke the 2010 record of 1:01.67 set by Chelsea Britt.

Claire Maiocco, 16, of Trinity Prep, who got her Olympic cut in the 100-meter butterfly in 1:00.39 at the recent sectionals in Orlando, came close to bettering it on Saturday night. She won the 15-16 title in 1:00.90, well under the Trials cut of 1:01.19.

Gulliver Swim Club, with a talented group of swimmers, has all but clinched the combined team title with 970 points. Miami Swimming is second with 558.50 and South Florida Aquatic Club is third with 440.

During Saturday morning three weather delays stopped the meet. The 800 freestyle relay was cancelled.

The three-day meet concludes Sunday with prelims and finals at the Coral Springs Aquatic Complex.

Florida Swim Network is live streaming the finals with play-by-play announcer Bess Auer and guest color analysts Sid Cassidy and Ryan Rosenbaum.

The meet features 44 teams and 603 swimmers. Several non-Florida Gold Coast teams and swimmers are also in the field including Trinity Prep, Sarasota and Peru, training in South Florida.

SOFLO Leads FGC Senior Championships After Day Two

By Sharon Robb

March 21, 2015—Jessica Rodriguez and Kathleen Golding highlighted another good showing of South Florida Aquatic Club swims Saturday night at the Florida Gold Coast Senior Championships at Academic Village Pool in Pembroke Pines.

Rodriguez, 16, won the 200-yard breaststroke in a career-best time 2:17.38, nearly three seconds ahead of Allison Kopas, 16, of Swim Fort Lauderdale. Her previous best was 2:19.68.

Golding, 14, won the women’s 400-yard individual medley in 4:17.41, also a career-best time, lowering her previous best of 4:21.14. She topped an impressive field that included Kelly Fertel, 17, of Gulliver and Amanda Tipton, 18, of Swim Fort Lauderdale.

“Those were two good solid times peaking into national level swims,” SOFLO coach Chris Anderson said.

Three-time Jamaican Olympian and world record holder Alia Atkinson, 26, broke her national record in the 100-yard butterfly, winning in 52.62, nearly three seconds ahead of teammate Carolina Colorado.

Earlier, Colorado, 27, swimming unattached for SOFLO, had knocked off Atkinson in the 50-yard backstroke, 25.07-25.42.

SOFLO’s Valentina Artemeva, 28, was second in the 200-yard breaststroke in a career-best 2:16.48, bettering her previous best of 2:20.97.

Colombian Jorge Murillo Valdes, 23, swimming unattached for SOFLO, won the 200-yard breaststroke in a best time 1:57.81, the only swimmer in the field to dip under 2 minutes. His previous best was 2:04.55.

SOFLO won the women’s 800-yard freestyle relay in 7:32.27 with Atkinson, Kelley Heron, Melissa Marinheiro and Golding.

Entering the third and final day, South Florida Aquatic Club will go after a three-peat. SOFLO is trying to win the Senior Championships and Junior Olympics in the same short course season and looks to be in the driver’s seat.

SOFLO leads the combined team standings with 2,068.50 points. Gulliver Swim Club is second with 1,519.50 points and Swim Fort Lauderdale is third with 1,301. The top three teams are the only ones to break 1,000 points.

SOFLO also leads the women’s team standings with 1,109.50 points ahead of Gulliver (695.50) and the men’s results with 959 points, also ahead of Gulliver (824).

Among other top SOFLO swims:

Juan Lucas, 16, won the B final of the 100-yard butterfly in 53.40 with an impressive time drop. His previous best was 55.63. CJ Kopecki, 15, was second in the B final in the 100-yard butterfly in 53.63.

Ervin Marin, 15, was third in the 400-yard individual medley in a best tie 4:06.54. His previous best was 4:07.57. Marin was third in the 200-yard breaststroke in a best time 2:09.24, dropping from 2:09.91. Marin also won the B final of the 200-yard freestyle in a best time 1:44.23, dropping from 1:45.39.

Florida State-bound Jordan Colon, 17, won the B final of the 50-yard backstroke in a best tie 27.01, dropping from 28.14.

Kelley Heron, 15, was second in the 50-yard backstroke in a best time 27.78, dropping from 28.19.

Abby Oyetunji, 15, was second in the B final of the 200-yard freestyle in a best time 1:58.82, the first time she cracked 2 minutes. Her previous best was 2:02.32.

Anderson was impressed with the team’s second day swims.

“This is the meet we really tried to focus on and really tried to peak at,” Anderson said. “We wanted to finish off the short course season right before long course and end on a high note as far as short course.

“Our swimmers had some great time drops and swims. Tonight goes to the Gold Group and National Group. They did a really good job executing their races.

“Our kids are really improving, building confidence and pushing their bodies a lot stronger because of pride which we have been trying to do and instill in these kids for a while now,” Anderson said.

A field of more than 500 swimmers from 32 teams are competing in the three-day meet, the last major meet of the short course season for age group swimmers.

The meet has attracted most of the Florida Gold Coast teams. In addition to SOFLO and Azura, among teams entered are St. Andrew’s Swimming, Miami Swimming, Gulliver, Coral Springs Swim Club, Pompano Beach, Swim Fort Lauderdale, Wahoos of Wellington, Metro Aquatics, Lake Lytal Lightning, AquaKids Sharks, Performance Aquatics, Boca Raton and Plantation Swim Team.
