Everglades Boys Team Sweeps In Strongest Showing Of Its BCAA Season

COCONUT CREEK, September 12, 2019–Everglades boys team dominated its BCAA meet against Dillard and Monarch on Wednesday.

Everglades swept all three relays and won seven of eight individual events held.

Everglades defeated Monarch, 80-20, and Dillard, 89-2. In the other meet, Monarch defeated Dillard 86-2.

It was the boys strongest showing of the season.

Brothers Leonardo and Alejandro Mateus combined for three individual wins and were members of the winning 200-yard medley and 200-yard freestyle relays.

Alejandro Mateus won the 200-yard individual medley in 2:07.70 and 100-yard butterfly in 57.88. Leonardo Mateus won the 100-yard breaststroke in 1:07.46 and finished second in the 500-yard freestyle in 4:53.30, just behind Juan Colmenares in 4:53.28 in one of the most exciting races of the meet.

Brayden Spalluto was Monarch’s only boys’ winner in the 100-yard freestyle in 1:02.26.

In the girls’ competition, Everglades defeated Dillard, 69-11, and tied Monarch, 45.50-45.50. In the other meet, Monarch defeated Dillard, 63-11.

Monarch won the girls’ 200-yard medley and 400-yard freestyle relays and five individual events.

Ava Martinez and Giulianna Garcia were double winners for Monarch.

Martinez won the 200-yard freestyle in 2:16.25 and 100-yard backstroke in 1:11.65. She was also a member of her team’s two winning relays.

Garcia won the 200-yard individual medley in 2:18.25 and 100-yard butterfly in 1:01.76 and was a member of the two winning relays.

St. Thomas Aquinas Sweeps District 9-4A Team Titles; Lance Lesage Wins District Title

CORAL SPRINGS, October 29, 2018—St. Thomas Aquinas defended its girls and boys team titles at last week’s District 9-4A Swimming and Diving Championship at Coral Springs Aquatic Complex.

The Raiders young girls team won with 646.5 points ahead of Douglas with 357 points and Deerfield Beach with 218 points.

The Raiders won all three of the girls relays and won six individual events.

The Raiders swept the top three places in the girls’ 200-yard freestyle with senior Kasey Jordan winning in 2:00.24 followed by sophomore Gabriella Chambers in 2:02.82 and freshman Isabella Troccoli in 2:07.12.

The Raiders also swept the top three places in the girls 100-yard butterfly with Jordan in 55.15, sophomore Lalainie Bannister in 55.89 and Troccoli in 57.99.

The Raiders swept the top three spots in the girls 500-yard freestyle with Gabriella Chambers in 5:25.13, freshman Victoria Landron in 5:27.18 and freshman Megan Smith in 5:32.63.

Kasey Jordan and Giulianna Garcia were double winners in individual events for the Raiders.

Jordan won the 200-yard freestyle in 2:00.24 and 100-yard freestyle in 55.15.

Garcia won the 200-yard individual medley in 2:15.07 and 100-yard butterfly in 1:00.39.

The Raiders boys team won the district crown with 427 points. Douglas was second with 365 and Coral Glades was third with 335 points.

SOFLO’s Lance Lesage won the 100-yard backstroke in 54.22 and was second in the 100-yard freestyle in 49.52. He was also a member of the Raiders’ two winning 200-yard medley and 400-yard freestyle relays.

Juan Zapata was a double winner for the Raiders boys in the 200-yard individual medley in 1:58.27 and 100-yard butterfly in 52.00.

Andres McKeon of Coral Springs and Carter Carlson of Deerfield Beach were also double winners.

McKeon won the 200-yard freestyle in 1:50.19 and 500-yard freestyle in 4:55.55.

Carlson won the 100-yard freestyle in 49.34 and 100-yard breaststroke in 1:02.92 and anchored the Bucks’ winning 200-yard freestyle relay that won in 1:31.55.

Connor Dietrich of Douglas won the boys diving title with 450.45 points. Teammate Olivia Rosen won the girls diving title with 410.60.

Boca Raton High School will host the Region 3-4A meet at Bobcat Aquatic Complex on Friday, Nov. 2 at 11 a.m. for diving and 5:30 p.m. for swimming. The event is timed finals.

Monarch Sweeps Blanche Ely, Northeast In BCAA Regular Season-Ender

DEERFIELD BEACH, October 11, 2018—Monarch ended its Broward County Athletic Association regular season on a winning note Wednesday in a tri-meet at Deerfield Beach Aquatic Center.

The Knights girls team, with 12 swimmers, defeated Blanche Ely, 133-6, and Northeast, 109-59. Northeast topped Ely, 98-9.

Monarch won the girls 200-yard medley and 400-yard freestyle relays.

Haley Taylor, Grace Nemanic and Giulianna Garcia were double winners for the Knights.

Taylor won the 50-yard freestyle in 27.21 and 100-yard freestyle in 1:03.75.

Nemanic won the 200-yard individual medley in 2:50.10 and 100-yard breaststroke in 1:26.93.

Garcia won the 100-yard butterfly in 1:1.93 and 500-yard freestyle in 5:39.53.

The Knights boys team, featuring ten swimmers, downed Blanche Ely, 111-7, and Northeast, 90-22. Northeast defeated Blanche Ely, 24-10.

Monarch swept all three boys relays. Teirnan Brosseau, Murilo Da Silva and Evan Spalluto were double winners.

Brosseau won the 200-yard freestyle in 2:07.90 and 100-yard freestyle in 57.19.

Da Silva won the 100-yard butterfly in 1:03.63 and 100-year breaststroke in 1:11.81.

Spalluto on the 200-yard individual medley in 2:31.66 and 100-yard backstroke in 1:07.06.

Cypress Bay Defends BCAA Team Titles; Kathleen Golding, Diego Machado, Juan Zapata Double Winners; Golding, Machado Break Meet Records

PLANTATION, September 30, 2018—Defending champion Cypress Bay lived up to expectations sweeping the girls and boys team titles Saturday night at the Broward County Athletic Association Swimming and Diving Championship at Plantation Aquatic Complex.

The Lightning boys’ team, led by double winner and record breaker Diego Machado and relays, won the team title with 585 points for the third time in four years.

Machado won the 200-yard freestyle in the county’s fastest time of 1:41.81, breaking the BCAA record of 1:42.41 set by Cypress Bay alum Franco Lupoli in 2011. Machado also won the 100-yard freestyle in 46.74, also the county’s fastest this season.

In an exciting girls competition, the Lightning, led by individual winners Gaby Banks and Elle Koch and relays, won the team title with 585 points. St. Thomas Aquinas was runner-up with 557 points and Cooper City was third with 437.

Banks, a junior, won the 50-yard freestyle in the county’s fastest time of 23.97, was fourth in the 100-yard freestyle in 53.17, a member of the winning 200-yard freestyle relay with teammates Emily Lopez-Diaz, Jacqueline Lugo and Paige Lane, and second-place 400-yard freestyle relay. She finished with 43 points in high point.

In morning prelims, Cypress Bay junior Ellie Koch swam the county’s fastest time this season in the 100-yard backstroke in 1:00.37 to earn the top seed for finals. She came back in finals and bettered her time in 1:00.22 to win the event. She finished with 41 points in high point.

Cooper City senior Kathleen Golding left a lasting impression in her final BCAA Championship appearance. The University of Florida commit broke the BCAA record in the 200-yard freestyle to finish with three career BCAA records.

Golding won the 200-yard freestyle in 1:50.39, breaking the previous record of 1:52.35 set by Ileana Lucos of Cypress Bay in 2006. She also won the 200-yard individual medley in 2:03.35, off her record of 2:02.93 set last year. Both times moved Golding into the No. 1 position of the county honor roll.

Golding was a member of the winning 200-yard medley relay with teammates Solana Capalbo, Molly Golding and Kate Kaplan. Golding finished with 48 points.

Cooper City freshman teammate Mallory Schleicher had a successful BCAA meet debut, winning the 500-yard freestyle in 5:09.56, second fastest time in the county this season. Other Cooper City individual winners were Solana Capalbo in the 100-yard freestyle in 52.21 and finished with 45 points and Molly Golding in the 100-yard breaststroke in 1:07.66. Golding finished with 45 points.

St. Thomas Aquinas’ Juan Zapata continued his outstanding season with wins in the 200-yard individual medley in 1:54.72 and 100-yard butterfly in 50.72, flirting with St. Thomas alum Bradley Alley’s 2004 meet record of 50.26. He finished with 48 points in high point.

Cypress Bay flexed its muscles in the relay competition sweeping all three boys’ relays. The Lightning’s only other winner was Luis Bucaro in the 500-yard freestyle in 4:40.65.

There were three other individual winners from Western, St. Thomas Aquinas and South Broward.

Eduardo Lopez of Western won the 50-yard freestyle in 22.25, knocking off Cooper City’s Robert Wilson, second in 22.40.

Lance Lesage, competing for St. Thomas for the first season after transferring from Fort Lauderdale, won his first BCAA title in the 100-yard backstroke in 53.83.

Andy Rogatinsky of South Broward, enjoying a good season, won the 100-yard breaststroke in 1:00.27 and was third in the 200-yard individual medley in 2:00.59. He finished with 44 points.

Freshman Giulianna Garcia of Monarch won the 100-yard butterfly in 59.36. She was the only swimmer to dip under a minute and was also the first BCAA girls champion for Monarch. She was the fastest qualifier in morning prelims in 1:00.07.

St. Thomas Aquinas girls team gave Cypress Bay a run for its’ money throughout the meet. The Raiders won the 400-yard freestyle relay in 3:37.60 with Lalainie Bannister, Gabriella Chambers, Kasey Jordan and Isabella Chambers and picked up 48 points. Cypress Bay clinched the title with a second place 42 points finishing in 3:38.30 with Banks, Marianna Serrao, Koch and Lane.

In a battle of freshman divers, Pompano Beach’s Christina Hilton won the girls 1-meter diving title with 236.90, knocking off defending champion Olivia Rosen of Douglas with 224.05.

In the boys 1-meter event, Blake Shaw of Northeast won with 258.30 points. Cooper City’s Tyler Flowers finished second for the second consecutive year with 249.95 points, bettering last year’s total of 193.40.

Monarch Tops Piper, South Plantation

DEERFIELD BEACH, September 25, 2018—Monarch picked up two wins after topping Piper and South Plantation Monday at Deerfield Beach Aquatic Center.

The girls team defeated Piper, 114-50, and South Plantation, 110-65. South Plantation downed Piper, 65-49.

The girls were led by Hayley Taylor and Giulianna Garcia.

Taylor, a junior, swept the freestyle sprint events. She won the 50-yard freestyle in 27.81 and 100-yard freestyle in 1:02.34.

Garcia, a freshman making her high school debut this season, won the 100-yard butterfly in 1:02.03 and 500-yard freestyle in 5:49.31.

The boys team defeated Piper, 91-22, and South Plantation 95-33. South Plantation edged Piper, 47-44.

Arthur Reis was the lone double winner for Monarch. The junior won the 200-yard individual medley in 2:45.32 and 100-yard butterfly in 1:17.09.

Monarch swept all three boys relays. All three teams will compete Saturday in the BCAA Championships in Plantation.
