Gulliver Invitational Attracts Top Teams On Saturday, SOFLO’s Tyla Martin Will Compete

Gulliver Invitational Attracts Top Teams On Saturday, SOFLO’s Tyla Martin Will Compete

September 16, 2011

WRITTEN BY SHARON ROBB

Any time Jacksonville Bolles, Pine Crest, Gulliver Prep, Ransom-Everglades and Carrollton are in the same pool, it turns out to be a mini-state meet.

Even though it’s still the first month of the high school swim season, the teams will compete Saturday at the Gulliver Invitational in what promises to be a competitive meet.

It will give swimmers a chance to race in a prelim-and-final format against the best, and for coaches a way to gauge training with two months left to go before the state meet in November in Orlando.

South Florida Aquatic club swimmer Tyla Martin will compete for Pine Crest, state runners-up last year. She is the only SOFLO swimmer in the meet.

Martin is entered in four events, the 200-yard medley relay, 100-yard butterfly (58.59), 100-yard backstroke (59.80) and 400-yard freestyle relay.

Martin, a freshman making her high school swimming debut this season, is seeded third in the 100-yard butterfly behind Bolles’ Smacker Miles and Salem Peacock, the only three swimmers seeded under one minute among the field of 20 swimmers.

Martin is seeded fourth in the 100-yard backstroke behind Bolles’ Chandler Soapes, Kandes Soapes and Salem Peacock, the only four swimmers under one minute in the field of 20 swimmers.

Bolles’ national age group record holder Ryan Murphy, at 16, the youngest member of the U.S. national team for the Oct. 15-22 Pan American Games, heads another talented Bolles team, defending state 1A champions. Murphy is a junior.

The Bolles high school program is the standard for all high school teams in the state of Florida. The boys have won 31 state titles including 23 consecutive team championships and girls have won 22 state titles including 20 straight.

The day-long meet will be held at Gulliver Prep’s $4.5 million on-campus Aquatic Center’s Olympic Pool.

A field of 757 high school and middle school swimmers will compete.

Gulliver is the only school in Miami-Dade to have an on-campus 50-meter Olympic-size pool that features Omega starting blocks with adjustable slanted backstop for track starts and wired to detect false starts on relays. The new facility opened January 2010.

The meet is named after Miami pioneer Marian Krutulis who purchased the school in 1953 and developed it into one of the state’s top private schools.
