SOFLO’s Alex Golding, Relays Top Finishers; Golding, Lares Make Futures Cuts; SOFLO Remains In Lead After Day Two Of FGC Senior Championships

CORAL SPRINGS, July 31, 2021—Alex Golding led South Florida Aquatic Club at the Florida Gold Coast Senior Championships Saturday at Coral Springs Aquatic Complex.

Golding, 17, finished runner-up in the 400-meter individual medley in a best time 4:41.74, shaving 3.88 seconds off his previous best of 4:45.62 and making his Futures cut. His splits were 1:05.92 (100 fly), 1:13.03 (100 back), 1:20.32 (100 breast) and 1:02.47 (100 free). Dario Martin, 16, of Olympus Swimming Club won in 4:35.98.

Golding was also 11th in the 200-meter freestyle in another best time, 2:00.00, with a 0.61 time drop and member of the third place 400-meter freestyle relay.

Also making his Futures cut was Sebastian Lares, 17, finishing ninth in the 200-meter freestyle in 1:57.09, time drop 4.64.

After two days, defending South Florida Aquatic Club continues to lead the combined team standings with 1,077.5, closely followed by St. Andrew’s Aquatics with 1,035.

“Our kids are having a spectacular meet,” SOFLO coach Chris Anderson said. “Our depth is winning it. Our star swimmers are at Futures and going to nationals tomorrow yet we are doing what we need to do at Senior Champs and that’s winning the combined. That’s huge. I know St. Andrew’s is very close, but that’s the best of the best. We have 10, 12 athletes that are the best of the best going to bigger meets. Our kids are really stepping it up and emerging into new stars.”

St. Andrew’s Aquatics leads the men’s competition with 770 followed by SOFLO with 639.

Gulliver Swim Club leads the women’s team standings with 567. SOFLO is fourth with 438.5.

SOFLO’s Top 10 finishers were:

Nat Gembicki, 16, 400-meter individual medley, sixth, 5:18.73.

The men’s 400-meter freestyle relay was third in 3:38.70 with Rafael Rodriguez, Alex Golding, Philo Ibrahim and Sebastian Lares.

The women’s 400-meter freestyle relay was fourth in 4:04.19 with Gembicki, Sally Golding, Michelle Marinheiro and Gaby Banks.

Javier Roman, 17, 200-meter breaststroke, ninth 2:32.39.

In March, SOFLO won its seventh title at its home pool. SOFLO swept the combined (2,007 points), women (1,013.50) and men (993.50) team titles.

The meet concludes on Sunday. Prelims are 8:30 a.m. and finals 5 p.m. The men’s and women’s 1500 freestyle distance finals are 11:25 a.m.

For the three-day long course meet in the Michael Lohberg Pool of Champions, 41 SOFLO swimmers, ages 15-and-over, (26 men and 15 women) have qualified for 174 individual and eight relay events.

Everyone is encouraged to wear face coverings or face masks while at the facility. Hand sanitation stations are available throughout the facility.

SOFLO Swimmers Head Field For This Weekend’s GRSC Fall Classic

MIAMI, October 18, 2019—South Florida Aquatic Club swimmers will get a chance at some good racing at this weekend’s GRSC Fall Classic at Gulliver Swim Club.

SOFLO has 47 swimmers (25 girls and 22 boys) competing in 256 individual events.

Among SOFLO’s top seeds are:

Mariana Pinto, 12, 200-yard freestyle, 2:02.51.

Juan Vallmitjana, 10, 200-yard freestyle, 2:14.43; 50-yard freestyle, 28.91; 100-yard freestyle, 1:04.23; 50-yard butterfly, 35.01.

SOFLO’s Mallory Schleicher Wins 5K Title At Swim Miami; Gulliver’s Alicia Mancilla Wins Mile Race

August 17, 2017—Mallory Schleicher of South Florida Aquatic Club won her first 5K open water overall title this past weekend.

Schleicher, 13, of Cooper City, won the 5K women’s race at Swim Miami at Miami Yacht Club on Watson Island.

Schleicher finished in 1 hour, 7 minutes and 42.36 seconds. Her mile pace was 21:50. She was the youngest swimmer in the women’s field. Maria Tupayachi Ortiz, 37, of Miami was second in 1:08:50.14.

At JO’s, Schleicher was fifth in the 1500-meter freestyle in 18:19.17 with a huge time drop of 18.55.

SOFLO age group coach George Mersinger, 64, of Miramar was the club’s second top finisher. He was 49th in 28:22.53.

Gina Grant, SOFLO’s newest masters swimmer, made her open water debut. She was 51st overall in 28:40

in the mile, won the female Special Olympics category and was fourth among the nine-swimmer Special Olympics field.

It was Grant’s second swimming event for SOFLO. She was a triple winner in the 1500 freestyle, 400 individual medley and 400 medley relay at the Special Olympics Florida-Broward Swimming County Games at Nova Southeastern.

In the 5K (3.1-miles) men’s race, former University of Alabama All-American Ricardo Valdivia, 52, held on to win the overall title in 55:57.62 just ahead of Blake Manganiello, 22, of Miami in 55:59.62. Both held 18:03 mile pace.

Alicia Mancilla of Gulliver Swim Club, fresh off her FINA World Championships debut in Budapest, Hungary, won the overall title in the Swim Miami Open Water Mile.

Mancilla, 17, topped a field of 160 men and women swimmers to win the race in 19:38.03. She was the only swimmer to crack 20 minutes. She defeated the closest male swimmer, Adam Madarassy, 32, of Miami who finished second in 21:58.95.

At Worlds, Mancilla, representing Guatemala, was the youngest swimmer in the 1500-meter freestyle. She won her heat in a best time 17:15.04 and finished 19th.

Swim Miami is part of the South Florida Swim Series.

Olivia Carter Wins On Day One Of Speedo Junior Nationals; SOFLO’s Kathleen Golding Competes Wednesday

August 8, 2017—Olivia Carter of Enfinity Aquatics knocked off Dakota Luther to win the 200-meter butterfly on opening day of the Speedo Junior National Championships Tuesday at Nassau County Aquatics Center in East Meadow, N.Y.

Carter, 17, won in a meet record 2:09.02 out-touching Luther, the only World Championships qualifier in the meet. Luther was the fastest qualifier in prelims in 2:11.40, out-touching Luther, the only World Championships qualifier in the meet. Luther was the fastest qualifier in prelims in 2:11.40. Both Luther and Carter will be teammates at University of Georgia in the fall.

Other winners were:

Daniel Roy, 17, of King Aquatic Club, 100-meter breaststroke, 1:01.42. High school Swimmer of the Year Reece Whitley, the event favorite, declared a false start.

Erica Sullivan, 16, of Sandpipers of Nevada, 800-meter freestyle, 8:33.49, lifetime best by one second.

Johannes Calloni, 17, of Scarlet Aquatics, 1500-meter freestyle, 15:18.44. Calloni is Stanford-bound.

The top Florida Gold Coast finisher was Mary Smutny, 16, of AquaKids Sharks. Smutny was fifth in the 200-meter butterfly in 2:13.87. Smutny has seven events remaining. Marcella Ruppert-Gomez, 18, of Gulliver Swim Club was seventh in the 800-meter freestyle in a lifetime-best 8:47.72, a time drop of 6.9 seconds.

South Florida Aquatic Club’s Kathleen Golding, 16, a junior at Cooper City High School and 2016 U.S. Olympic trials qualifier, begins competing on Wednesday.

She will swim the first two of six events, the 100-meter freestyle (seeded 11th) and 400-meter individual medley (seeded 6th).

The five-day meet runs through Saturday. Prelims are 9 a.m. and finals 6 p.m. All sessions will be live streamed at usaswimming.org.

Atlantis, Gulliver Swim Clubs Win Eleven Races At FGC Area 3 Championships

July 14, 2017—Atlantis Swim Club and Gulliver Swim Club combined for eleven individual wins on opening night of the Florida Gold Coast Area 3 Long Course Developmental Championships at Academic Village Pool.

Led by double winners Ysabella Farias, 13, and Tomas Farias, 17, Atlantis Swim Club won four boys and two girls individual events.

Ysabella Farias swept the freestyle events. She won the 200-meter freestyle in a best time 2:19.58 with a 5.30 time drop and 400-meter freestyle in 4:49.53, another best time with a 14.19 time drop.

Tomas Farias swept the medley races. He won the 200-meter individual medley in 2:30.87 and 400-meter individual medley in a best time 5:33.22 with a time drop of 10.31.

Gulliver Swim Club had five winners including three girls and two boys.

For Gulliver girls, Maria Grant, 10, won the 200-meter IM in 3:10.59 with a 13.07 time drop; Deborah Alarcon, 13, in the 200-meter individual medley in a best time 2:38.93 with a time drop of 7.65; and Natalie Gembicki, 12, won the 400-meter freestyle in a best time 5:25.88 with a drop of 3.51.

Gulliver boys were led by Eddy Chen, 13, who won the 200-meter individual medley in 2:35.79, a 3.18 time drop and Peyton Selts, 10, in the 400-meter freestyle in 6:03.55 with a time drop of 10.35.

There are two other FGC Area Championships being held simultaneously. Sunrise is hosting the Area 2 Championships and Boca Raton Swim Team is hosting the Area 1 Championships at Boca Raton High School Aquatic Center.

Kraft, Pacheco Triple Winners In Final Session Of Gulliver Winter Classic

February 19, 2017—Cassandra Kraft of Gulliver Swim Club and Sebastian Pacheco of Metro Aquatics each won three events to highlight action Sunday in the fifth and final session of the Gulliver Winter Classic.

Kraft, 10, won the 100-yard individual medley in 1:07.82; 50-yard butterfly in 29.04; and 100-yard freestyle in 59.01. All three were time drops.

Kraft was also second in the 50-yard backstroke in 31.33, also a time drop.

Pacheco, 12, won the 100-yard individual medley in 1:04.63, 100-yard freestyle in 56.55 and 50-yard backstroke in 31.32. He had time drops in the IM and freestyle.
