Valentina Remmele, Dalyah Bouti, Gabriela Ekht Lead SOFLO At Holiday Classic

PEMBROKE PINES, November 19, 2022—South Florida Aquatic Club swimmers got in some great racing Saturday at the Holiday Classic at Academic Village Pool.

Valentina Remmele, 10, was a triple winner. She won the 10-and-under 50-yard freestyle in 30.34, dropping 0.58; 50-yard backstroke in 36.81, dropping 0.57; and 100-yard individual medley in 1:19.02, dropping 0.89. Remmele competed in six events and had four best times.

Dalyah Bouti, 8, competed in six events and had four best times. Bouti won the 8-and-under 25-yard backstroke in 21.62, dropping 1.39.

Gabriela Ekht, 10, competed in nine events and had seven time drops including 6.43 seconds in the 100-yard breaststroke. She won the 10-and-under 50-yard breaststroke in a best time 43.60 dropping 1.38. She also dropped 4.86 seconds in the 100 IM.

Mikey Barber, 10, was SOFLO’s top boys finisher. He competed in seven events and had three best times. He was second in the 10-and-under 50-yard breaststroke in a best time 44.10, dropping 0.51. Gregory Miralles, 8, was second in the 8-and-under 25-yard breaststroke in 27.22. He competed in six events and had two best times including a nice 14.70 drop in the 100 IM.

SOFLO’s Jordan Evans Sweeps Five Events At Holiday Classic

PEMBROKE PINES, November 23, 2019—Jordan Evans of South Florida Aquatic Club had an outstanding day at the Holiday Classic Saturday at Academic Village Pool.

Evans won five events all with career-best times. Her wins and best times were:

50-yard freestyle, 36.30, time drop 3.22.

25-yard freestyle, 16.56, time drop 1.58.

25-yard butterfly, 18.71, time drop 2.29.

25-yard breaststroke, 21.42, time drop 2.29.

25-yard backstroke, 19.98, time drop 2.08.

SOFLO’s Christie Ann Lumsden was second in the 25-yard freestyle in a best time 18.39 and 50-yard freestyle in 40.25. She also took a third and fourth place.

Matthew Ortiz was SOFLO’s top boys finisher with two seconds, two thirds and one fifth place. Ortiz was second in the 25-yard butterfly in 20.99 and 50-yard freestyle in a best time 38.14.

SOFLO Girls Dominate Holiday Classic

December 11, 2015—South Florida Aquatic Club’s girl power dominated the 10&Under Holiday Classic Friday night at Academic Village in Pembroke Pines.

Fiorella Di Salvo won four 7-8 events and finished second and posted four best times in another to lead the girls team.

Valerie Vank won five events in the 9-10 age group.

Six-year-old Clara Bland won all four of her events.

SOFLO girls compiled 404 points to win the team title. The boys team swept the team title with 297 points.

The boys were led by Joseph Blake Natino, who won all four of his events; Alejandro Mateus, who won five events; and double winner Benjamin Kim.

On Saturday, the December Sprint Championship will be held with two sessions at 8:30 a.m. and 1:30 p.m.

Teams entered are Bob Karl Swim Club, Bone Island Swim Club, Delvilrays Swim Club, Indian River Aquatics, Metro Aquatics, YSF of South Florida and host SOFLO.

Santa Claus, with the help of one of his favorite elves, three-time Olympian Alia Atkinson, got a sneak preview of who is naughty, nice and fast at Friday’s Broward County Holiday Classic 8&Under Championships.

In a Winter Wonderland, also known as Academic Village Pool, the Comets took turns posing for pictures with Santa and having fun with teammates and coaches while competing in sprint events.

The majority of the Comets swimmers turned in at least one if not more than one best time.

Sebastian Lares, 8, swept all five of his events, swam three career-best times and earned high point award in his age group with a meet-high 100 points to lead the Comet boys.

Lares won the 100-yard freestyle (1:11.51), 50-yard butterfly (39.44), 50-yard breaststroke (45.32), 50-yard backstroke (38.22) and 100-yard individual medley (1:24.87). He led off the 100-yard freestyle relay with a split of 18.31.

Fernando Barreto, 6, won one event, finished second in two races and third in another and swam two best times.

Zackary Harris, 8, finished second in four races and fourth in another and turned in four lifetime-best times.

Erika Pelaez, 6, led the Comet girls winning all four of her events in all best times. She won high point award for her age group with 80 points.

Pelaez won the 6-and-under 25-yard freestyle (17.07), 25-yard butterfly (20.29), 25-yard breaststroke (26.09) and 25-yard backstroke (20.26). She also led off the 100-yard freestyle relay with a 23.25 split.

Jena Legaspi, 8, won one event, finished second in four others and swam four career-best times.

From the grass roots to elite level, South Florida Aquatic Club swimmers will be busy this weekend.

SOFLO’s Olympians Alia Atkinson, Vlad Polyakov and Dara Torres along with Jessie Alcaide will compete at the AT&T Winter National Championships that begin Thursday at the Georgia Tech Aquatic Center in Atlanta.

The meet is long course meters.

Alcaide will compete in the 50- and 100-meter freestyle; Atkinson will swim the 100- and 200-meter breaststroke, 100-meter butterfly and 200-meter individual medley. Polyakov is entered in the 100- and 200-meter breaststroke.

Torres will compete only in the 50-meter freestyle.

The foursome will be joined by Olympic gold medalists Ryan Lochte, Rebecca Soni, Missy Franklin and Brendan Hansen.  A total of 64 out of 108 U.S. national team members will compete during the three-day meet that ends on Saturday.

The international field will feature Japanese Olympic gold medalist Kosuke Kitajima, Fred Bousquet and Laure Manaudou of France, Gemma Spofforth of Great Britain and Darian Townsend of South Africa.

Fourteen-time Olympic gold medalist Michael Phelps will not compete, choosing instead to train.

Taped footage of the meet will air on NBC on Sunday, 2-3 p.m. The meet will also be webcast live at usaswimming.org or ihigh.com/liveswim.

Rojas Heads To Gainesville

SOFLO’s Marc Rojas, coming off the state high school meet and winter championships, will compete in the Gator Swim Club Holiday Classic in Gainesville Friday through Sunday.

The meet is short course yards.

Rojas, 17, will compete in the 100-yard breaststroke on Friday (seeded ninth in 58.96), 200-yard individual medley on Saturday (seeded eighth in 1:57.32) and 200-yard breaststroke on Sunday (seeded sixth in 2:07.92).

A week after watching her younger sister Melissa compete, Marcella Marinheiro, 17, is competing in the Brazilian 17-18 Age Group Nationals in Joao Pessoa, Paraiba-Brazil this week.

Comets Host Holiday Classic

SOFLO will host the annual 8 & Under Broward County Holiday Classic Saturday at the Academic Village Pool in Pembroke Pines.

The meet is geared toward the grass roots swimmers learning strokes and how to race in a fun, festive atmosphere.

Since it is a championship meet, high point awards will be given. Warm-up is 10 a.m. The meet begins 11 a.m.

At age 5, Sofia Christopher and Noelle Crichton are SOFLO’s youngest swimmers. Christopher will compete in the 6-and-under 25-yard freestyle and 25-yard backstroke and Crichton will swim all four stroke races in the 6-and-under age group.

SOFLO has 51 swimmers entered in the meet. Several other clubs will compete including Pompano Beach, FLA and Heritage Aquatics.
