Ivan Parada of Pembroke Pines Charter and Kry Nichlany of Archbishop McCarthy finished tenth Thursday night at the FHSAA State 2A Swimming and Diving Championships at Orlando YMCA Aquatic Center.

Parada, a senior competing in his final state meet, was second in the “B” final and tenth overall in the 100-yard freestyle in a best time 48.40. Parada also finished the 100-yard backstroke in 56.36 to finish 23rd.

Nichlany, a junior finished second in the 100-yard butterfly “B” final and tenth overall in a best time 52.49.

Maverick teammate and senior team captain Ryan Hall, was 16th in the 100-yard freestyle in 49.54 after going 49.20 in prelims in his return trip to state.

Archbishop McCarthy’s 200-yard freestyle relay of Matthew Mila, Kry Nichlany, Ryan Hall and Jojo Perez was 13th in 1:31.84 after going 1:31.75 in prelims.

SOFLO’s Jordan Colon, a sophomore at Mater Academy, finished 21st in the 100-yard breaststroke in 1:03.15 in his state meet debut.

Archbishop McCarthy’s 400-yard freestyle relay of Matthew Mila, Kry Nichlany, Jojo Perez and Ryan Hall was 13th in 3:20.92.

SOFLO age group coach Megan Garland won bragging rights for a year after her Archbishop McCarthy team finished 31st with 24 points, 10 places ahead of Pembroke Pines Charter, coached by SOFLO age group coach Rose Lockie, which was 41st with 7 points.

“Our boys did well today,” Garland said. “It was the first time ever we’ve had kids make it back to finals individually. And our relays both placed 13th.”

Fort Lauderdale High senior Lance Rutkin just missed a state title in the 500-yard freestyle finishing second in an automatic All-American time of 4:25.78. The Princeton-bound swimmer was also third in the 200-yard freestyle in a best time 1:40.09. Rutkin was also a member of the fourth place 200-yard freestyle relay that went a best time.

“If I had an extra five yards in the 500 I might have caught him, it was exciting,” Rutkin said. “I knew it was going to come down to the last 50.”

Miami Belen, led by senior Julian Ballestas, won the boys’ team crown with 221 points for the sixth time in seven years.

Tallahassee Chiles won the girls’ team title with 304.5 points followed by Riviera Beach Suncoast with 161. Martin County was third with 151.

WRITTEN BY SHARON ROBB

November 4, 2012

With so many high quality swimmers, the Region 4-2A Swimming and Diving Championships at Florida Gulf Coast University felt more like a state meet than a region meet.

Archbishop McCarthy and Pembroke Pines Charter did manage to qualify its top boys swimmers for the FHSAA State 2A Swimming and Diving Championships on Thursday at the Orlando YMCA Aquatic Center.

Pembroke Pines Charter senior Ivan Parada leads the SOFLO contingent. Parada is seeded 13th in the 100-yard freestyle in 48.93 and 22nd in the 200-yard backstroke in 56.29.

Archbishop McCarthy senior Ryan Hall will return to state in one individual event and two relays. Hall qualified in the 100-yard freestyle and is seeded 18th in 49.22.

Mavericks teammate Kry Nichlany, a junior who trains with the Davie Nadadores, qualified in the 100-yard butterfly and is seeded 16th in 53.60.

Archbishop McCarthy also qualified its 200- and 400-yard freestyle relays. The 200 free relay is seeded 16h in 1:31.49 with Matthew Mila, JoJo Perez, Nichlany and Hall.

The 400 free relay is seeded 13th in 3:19.91 with the same foursome.

SOFLO’s Jordan Colon, a sophomore at Mater Academy, qualified for his first state meet in the 100-yard breaststroke. He is seeded 17th for states with a best time of 1:02.55.

Pembroke Pines Charter and Archbishop McCarthy boys teams had their 200-yard medley relay teams disqualified for early take-off and stroke infraction.

Riviera Beach Suncoast won the girls team title with 343 points, an 18-point margin over runner-up Naples Gulf Coast.

Boys powerhouse Miami Belen Jesuit won the boys team title by nearly 100 points with 353 points ahead of Gulf Coast with 258.

For Belen, senior Julian Ballestas won the 100 freestyle (46.17) and was on two winning relays. Junior Boleck De Pawlikowski won the 100 backstroke (52.70) and was on two winning relays. Belen Jesuit also swept the 200 medley relay (1:38.92), 200 freestyle relay (1:28.52) and 400 freestyle relay (3:13.36).

Pembroke Pines Charter Building For Future, Splits Double Dual Meet

Pembroke Pines Charter Building For Future, Splits Double Dual Meet

WRITTEN BY SHARON ROBB

October 3, 2012

With so many underclassmen and up-and-coming club swimmers, the future looks bright for Pembroke Pines Charter.

The Jaguars hosted St. Thomas Aquinas and Coral Springs Wednesday night at Academic Village Pool.

The boys’ team, led by Ivan Parada, Diego Rodriguez, Joshue Kon and Alexander Viloria, defeated Coral Springs, 123-35 and dropped a 113-63 decision to state runner-up St. Thomas Aquinas. It was the boys first loss of the season.

The girls, led by 500-yard freestyle winner Lilli Calero and runners-up Monica Rodriguez, Cristina Villegas and Rodriguez Calero, also defeated Coral Springs, 137-13, and lost to St. Thomas, 131-49. It was the girls second loss of the season. The girls are defending district champions.

Parada was a double winner, knocking off RJ Moore of St. Thomas in the 50-yard freestyle, 22.66-23.00, and winning the 100-yard freestyle in 50.09.

Parada was also a member of the winning 400-yard freestyle that won in 3:37.50 along with teammates Joshue Kon, Alexander Viloria and Nikolas Ujueta.

Rose Lockie, in the midst of her third season as head coach at Pembroke Pines Charter, not only sees vast improvement from the last two seasons but also unlimited potential for the future.

“I think they are doing really well,” said Lockie, an age group coach with South Florida Aquatic Club.

“We have a lot of depth,” Lockie said. “We don’t have any superstars, but the depth is making it easier. We have a big mix of club and high school swimmers. We have a lot of brand new swimmers.”

If the swimmers fulfill Lockie’s attendance rules, each swimmer gets the opportunity to swim in each meet.

“For the girls it’s harder because we have more and some may only swim a leg of a relay but every kid will swim. Everybody on the team swims in every meet if they attend the required practices.”

Lockie had 55 swimmers out for the team with 47 at Wednesday’s meet.

“I think it’s because it’s the Olympic year,” Lockie said. “Any time after the Olympics you are going to get a lot of swimmers. We’ll see if they come back next year. We have a lot of brand new swimmers. I have so many freshmen.”

Lockie said it’s a 50-50 split between club and non-club swimmers on the team roster.

“Even those who are not club swimmers have swam for clubs before,” Lockie said. “They have the experience. Someone like Alex Viloria who quit USA Swimming a while back but does water polo is swimming great. Most of them are doing really well and most of the non-club swimmers seem to be pumped up. They are very enthusiastic.”

Lockie is settling in to coaching high school swimming. “It’s gotten better every year, it just has,” Lockie said. “I’ve relaxed a lot more and realize it’s high school swimming. Most of these kids are here to have fun. They are not looking for scholarships, they just want to have fun and go to meets.

“This is my best team yet,” Lockie said. “We’ll see how it goes. We will do the best we can. My freshmen are probably most of my best swimmers so it looks really good for the future.”
