Jenesys Amores Leads SOFLO In Session Four Of TYR SOFLO Open; Older Swimmers Shine On Final Day

PEMBROKE PINES, January 22, 2023—Jenesys Amores led South Florida Aquatic Club on the third and final day of the TYR SOFLO Open Sunday at Academic Village Pool.

Amores, 14, won four events and finished with 98 points for the meet.

Amores won the 200-yard freestyle in 2:02.19; 50-yard backstroke in 31.28; 200-yard backstroke in 2:17.56; and 100-yard freestyle in 58.29.

In another exciting relay race, SOFLO A’s girls 200-yard freestyle relay of Ana Villamil, Natalie Gembicki, Carley Kaplan and Olivia Dinehart won in 1:40.12, edging out TS Aquatics in 1:40.65 with Tawannah McLemore, Brianna Hernandez, Kendra Gomez and Nati Ortiz.

Juan Vallmitjana and Nicolai Ross were double winners for SOFLO boys.

Vallmitjana won the 200-yard freestyle in 1:51.62 and 200-yard butterfly in 2:05.28.

Ross won the 200-yard backstroke in 2:06.65 and 100-yard freestyle in 51.63.

TS Aquatics knocked off SOFLO A’s boys’ 200-yard freestyle relay (Javier Colmenares, Derek Hau, Jaden Amores and Aldo Zepeda), 1:29.58-1:31.96 with Miles Green, Mason Green, RJ Martin and Mekhi Dawkins.

Individual SOFLO winners were: Natalie Gembicki, Lydia Smutny, Maddie Smutny, Elise Dinehart, Elena Dinehart, Olivia Dinehart, Mason Jimenez, Maximilian Remmele, Jaden Amores and Luciano Gonzalez.

SOFLO Swimmers Dominate Opening Night Of TYR SOFLO Open

PEMBROKE PINES, January 20, 2023—South Florida Aquatic Club got off to a strong start on opening night of the TYR SOFLO Open Friday at Academic Village Pool.

SOFLO girls swept all but two races in the girls events and boys swept all but three races.

Christie Ann Lumsden, Jianna Amores, Rainier Leyva Riestra and Juan Vallmitjana were double winners.

Lumsden won the 10-and-under 200-yard freestyle in a best time 2:10.74, dropping 0.93 and 200-yard individual medley in 2:33.42, also a best time with a 5.24 time drop.

Amores won the 11-12 200-yard freestyle in a 2:05.94, a best time with a 0.62 drop and 200-yard IM in a best time 2:25.98 with a 2.59 drop.

SOFLO individual girls winners were Jenesys Amores in the 13-14 100 IM in a best time 1:05.66 with a 3.03 drop. Laila Harran won the 13-14 400 IM in 4:51.50.

In the boys’ competition, Riestra won the 11-12 200-yard freestyle in 2:08.34 and 200 IM in a best time 2:30.49, with a 0.62 drop.

Vallmitjana won the 13-14 100 IM 58.45, with a 5.67 drop and 400 IM in 4:18.55.

SOFLO’s Toma Petkov won the 10-and-under 200 IM in 2:40.65.

SOFLO Girls Lead, Boys Second After Day One Of 32nd Speedo Winter Championships


PLANTATION, December 8, 2022—South Florida Aquatic Club took the early lead in the girls’ competition of the 32nd annual Speedo Winter Championships Thursday at Plantation Aquatic Complex.

The two-time defending champions are tied with St. Andrew’s for the lead in the girls’ competition with 162 points ahead of North Palm Beach (78) and Jupiter Fraons (54).

SOFLO won both 19-and-over relays. SOFLO won the 200-yard medley relay in 1:46.31 with Elena Dinehart, Olivia Dinehart, Ana Villamil and Natalie Gembicki.

SOFLO also won the 200-yard freestyle relay in 1:37.49 with Natalie Gembicki, Ana Villamil, Maddie Smutny and Olivia Dinehart). Three other relays took third places.

Izzy Wilson was SOFLO’s lone individual winner in the 15-16 1,650-yard freestyle in a best time 17:11.03, dropping 1.47 seconds.

SOFLO boys are second with 139 points behind St. Andrew’s with 186. Metro Aquatics are third with 80, just one point ahead of host Plantation Swim Team with 79.

SOFLO’s top boys finishers were Juan Vallmitjana and Felix Gonzalez. Valmitjana was second in the 13-14 1,650-yard freestyle in a best time 16:07.71, with an impressive 11.22-second drop. Gonzalez was third in the distance event in 16:34.36.

SOFLO boys relays also took one second, two third, one fourth and one fifth place.

Forty-six of the 71 teams competed on opening night.

The four-day meet, one of the oldest and largest in the state, continues Friday, Saturday and Sunday with prelims at 8:30 a.m. and finals 5 p.m.

In addition to SOFLO, other top teams competing are Azura Florida Aquatics, Eagle Aquatics, Pine Crest Swimming, St. Andrew’s Aquatics, Midtown Weston, Jupiter Dragons, Wahoos of Wellington and Metro Aquatics.

PEMBROKE PINES, November 21, 2022—South Florida Aquatic Club swimmers dominated the two-day TYR SOFLO Last Chance Meet at Academic Village Pool.

Four SOFLO swimmers earned high point awards. They were:

Christie Ann Lumsden, 10, with 2,846 points followed by teammate Valentina Remmele, 10, second with 1,597 and Amber Connor fourth with 1,490.

Toma Petkov, 10, with 2,156 points followed by Michael Barber, 10, third with 1,665 and Luis Escobar, 10, fifth with 1,586.

Juan Vallmitjana, 13, with 3,477 points followed by Joshua Menezes, 13, third with 1,796; Justin Campos, 14, fourth with 1,691; and Jose Rincon, 14, fifth with 1,608.

Ana Villamil, 17, with 1,887 points followed by Gabriella DeLuna, 16, (second) with 1,857 and Michelle Marinheiro, 20, (fifth) with 1,300.

Olivia Dinehart, Juan Vallmitjana Lead SOFLO In Final Session Of SOFLO Distance IMX/IMR TYR Challenge

PEMBROKE PINES, October 2, 2022–South Florida Aquatic Club finished up a solid weekend of racing at Session Five of the SOFLO Distance IMX/IMR TYR Challenge Sunday at Academic Village Pool.

Olivia Dinehart, 17, and Juan Vallmitjana, 13, were double winners.

Dinehart won the 100-yard individual medley in 1:00.55 and 500-yard freestyle in 5:16.56. She finished with three firsts, one third and one sixth place.

Vallmitjana won the 200-yard individual medley in a best time 2:04.93, dropping 3.92 seconds off his previous best, and 500-yard freestyle in 4:46.19. He was also second in the 200-yard butterfly in a best time 2:04.18, dropping 5.79. He finished with three wins, three seconds and one third place.

Other SOFLO winners were:

Among other Florida Gold Coast teams in the field were Pine Crest, Metro Aquatics, Plantation Swim Team, Midtown Weston, Olympus Swim Club, North Miami Swim Team, Hialeah Swim Club and Speed World Swimming. It was one of the most competitive fields assembled for the meet.

Elena Dinehart, Julio Horrego Lead SOFLO At Session Three Of SOFLO Distance IMX/IMR TYR Challenge

PEMBROKE PINES, October 1, 2022–South Florida Aquatic Club swimmers finished out the day on a successful note at Session Three of the SOFLO Distance IMX/IMR TYR Challenge Saturday at Academic Village Pool.

Elena Dinehart, 17, and Julio Horrego, 23, were double winners.

Dinehart won the 15-and-over 200-yard backstroke in 2:07.67 and 400-yard individual medley in 4:40.60.

Horrego, a 2020 Honduran Olympian, won the 200-yard breaststroke in 1:58.54 and 100-yard freestyle in 45.68.

Other SOFLO winners were:
Juan Vallmitjana, 13, in the 400-yard individual medley in a best time 4:19.31, dropping 9.56 seconds off his previous best. He was also second in the 200-yard backstroke in a best time 2:04.84, dropping 9.30 and 200-yard breaststroke in 2:24.46, dropping 8.36. He dropped a total of 26.22 seconds in three events.

Ricardo Roche, 22, won the 200-yard backstroke in 1:51.92.

Ana Villamil, 17, won the 200-yard breaststroke in 2:30.28. She also had a 4.25 drop in her 200 backstroke.

Maddie Smutny, 17, won the 100-yard freestyle in 53.87.

Several SOFLO swimmers had impressive time drops including Sarah Bedoya, 200 backstroke, 5.24; Sofia Lugo, 400 IM, 4.03; Maximiliano Remmele, 200 backstroke, 10.59, 200 breaststroke, 12.87 and 400 IM 13.41; Connor Jimenez, 200 backstroke, 12.15 and 200 breaststroke, 8.95; Mason Jimenez, 200 backstroke, 14.57, 200 breaststroke, 8.92 and 400 IM 19.70; Abraham Penaloza, 200 breaststroke, 7.84; Ryan Harries, 200 breaststroke, 9.16; and Joshua Menezes, 400 IM, 5.55

The three-day meet concludes Sunday with two sessions at 8:30 a.m. and 11:30 a.m. Warm-up is 7:30 a.m.

SOFLO heads the field with 174 (91 girls and 83 boys) swimmers in 879 individual events.

SOFLO Girls Sweep Distance Event On Opening Day Of SOFLO Distance IMX/IMR TYR Challenge

PEMBROKE PINES, September 30, 2022–South Florida Aquatic Club swimmers dominated opening night action at the SOFLO Distance IMX/IMR TYR Challenge Friday at Academic Village Pool.

SOFLO girls swept the top three spots in the 1,650-yard freestyle.

Auburn University-commit Olivia Dinehart, 17, won the distance event in 17 minutes, 38.77 seconds. Teammates Maddy Smutny, 17, was second in 17:48.82 and Elena Dinehart, 17, was third in 17:59.96.

Juan Vallmitjana, 13, was SOFLO’s top boys’ finisher placing third in a best time 16:19.12, dropping 25.39 from his previous best of 16:44.51.

SOFLO teammate Felix Gonzalez, 15, was fourth in 16:47.64, also a best time dropping 3.02 seconds. His previous best was 16:50.66.

St. Andrew’s Sweeps Team Titles; SOFLO Second In Combined And Boys, Third In Girls At FGC Junior Olympics; Rose Lockie Coaches Final SOFLO Meet

STUART, July 18, 2022—South Florida Aquatic Club finished runner-up in the combined and boys team standings and third among the girls teams Sunday at the 14&Under Florida Gold Coast Junior Olympics at Sailfish Splash Waterpark.

St. Andrews Aquatics won its second consecutive JO title, sweeping the combined, boys and girls team titles. The Boca Raton club also won the short course JOs combined and girls team titles in March at Coral Springs.

St. Andrew’s Aquatics won the combined with 671 points followed by SOFLO with 468 and Wahoos of Wellington with 421.

In a close battle for the boys team title, St. Andrew’s Aquatics won with 253.50 points. SOFLO was second with 227 and defending champion Metro Aquatics was third with 217. One point separated St. Andrew’s and SOFLO headed into Sunday’s boys prelims where St. Andrew’s picked up clutch points in the relays.

St. Andrew’s Aquatics won the girls team title with 417.50 points. Wahoos of Wellington edged SOFLO for second place, 247-241.

Longtime and beloved coach Rose Lockie coached her final meet before retiring from club coaching at SOFLO and high school coaching at Pembroke Pines Charter. Lockie will start her retirement with a trip to Seattle and then a “dream” Alaskan cruise.

“On this, my last day of coaching, I would like to thank you all for the wonderful memories I will be taking with me. It has been an honor and a privilege to be a member of this amazing team,” Coach Rose wrote in a note to coaches, swimmers and parents.

“A special thank you to Coach Chris for giving me the opportunity to coach Bronze from Day 1; to Coach Luis and Coach George, who have been by my side for 16 years. I wish you all the very best. Swimmers train hard to reach your goals. Good luck. So, thank you again as I move on to another chapter of my life. I will miss you all.”

SOFLO’s Christie Ann Lumsden and Juan Vallmitjana led in high point. Lumsden finished third with 42 points and Vallmitjana finished fourth with 31 points.

SOFLO’s 13-14 200-meter freestyle relay was third in 1:56.68 with Lydia Smutny, Jenesys Amores, Tania Mantilla and Katelyn Gembicki.

SOFLO’s 11-12 200-meter medley relay was third in 2:14.98 with Saree Young, Gianna Martin, Jianna Amores and Laila Harran.

Lydia Smutny was SOFLO’s top girls’ finisher placing second in the 200-meter butterfly in 2:28.05. Lumsden was third in the 200-meter freestyle in 2:32.26.

SOFLO’s 11-12 boys 200-meter medley relay was second in 2:16.08 with David Valdiviezo, Ethan Hall, Noah Mejias and Guillermo Mantilla.

Vallmitjana was the boys top finisher taking fourth in both the 200-meter IM in 2:20.74 and 200-meter freestyle in 2:04.35.

SOFLO had one of its largest contingents compete with 64 qualified swimmers (33 boys, 31 girls) in 274 individual events and relays. Next up are this week’s FGC Senior Championships for SOFLO.

SOFLO Boys Lead; Lumsden, Vallmitjana, Relays Shine On Day Three Of FGC Junior Olympics

STUART, July 17, 2022—South Florida Aquatic Club leads the boys team standings going into the fourth and final day of the 14&Under Florida Gold Coast Junior Olympics at Sailfish Splash Waterpark.

SOFLO and St. Andrew’s are in a dogfight for the boys’ team title with SOFLO leading 170-169. Defending champion Metro Aquatics is third with 153.

St. Andrew’s has all but clinched the girls team title with 284.50 points. Wahoos of Wellington is second with 176 and SOFLO is third with 171.

Christian Ann Lumsden, 10, won her second event in the 50-meter breaststroke in a best time 41.18, bettering her previous best of 41.36. She was also third in the 100-meter freestyle in a best time 1:08.33. She has compiled 27 points in high point.

Juan Vallmitjana, 13, was second in the 400-meter freestyle in a best time 4:16.68, bettering his previous best of 4:30.38.

SOFLO boys 200-meter medley relay was second in 2:44.29 with Michael Barber, Toma Petkov, Ethan Phan and Niccolo Miccolis.

SOFLO girls picked up two third places and one fourth in the relays.

The 10-and-under 200-meter medley relay was third in 2:40.87 with Joanna Valdiviezo, Christie Ann Lumsden, Varvara Dmitrova and Valentina Remmele.

The 13-14 400-meter medley relay was third in 4:46.25 with Jenesys Amores, Lydia Smutny, Elise Dinehart and Katelyn Gembicki. The 11-12 relay was fourth in 5:02.99 with Saree Young, Gianna Martin, Jianna Amores and Laila Harran.

Weather and lightning delays played havoc with the meet and forced the rescheduling of events.

SOFLO has one of its largest contingents with 64 qualified swimmers (33 boys, 31 girls) in 274 individual events and relays.

At last summer’s JOs, SOFLO won the girls team title with 262 points ahead of Metro Aquatics with 234. SOFLO boys’ team finished second with 246.50 behind Metro Aquatics with 346 points. Metro Aquatics won the combined team title with 610 points. Defending champion SOFLO was second with 546.50.

The four-day meet, which concludes on Sunday, is being co-hosted by Martin County, Florida Gold Coast Swimming, Martin County Swimming and North Palm Beach Swim Club for the sixth time.

SOFLO’s Lumsden Wins Title; Ransom Everglades Relay Breaks FGC Record; SOFLO Boys Lead, Girls Second At Junior Olympics

STUART, July 15, 2022—South Florida Aquatic Club leads the boys team standings and is second among girls teams after second day action at the 14&Under Florida Gold Coast Junior Olympics Friday at Sailfish Splash Waterpark.

The boys team leads with 112.5 points followed by St. Andrew’s Aquatics with 104 and defending champion Metro Aquatics with 84.

Defending champion SOFLO girls are second with 106 points behind St. Andrew’s Aquatics with 154.5. Wahoos of Wellington are third with 105.

Christie Ann Lumsden, 10, won SOFLO’s first JO title of the meet in the 100-meter breaststroke in a best time 1:26.02, dropping 6.47 seconds off her previous best. Lumsden was also second in the 200-meter individual medley in 2:51.01, also a best time dropping 10.62 and dipping below 3 minutes for the first time.

SOFLO’s top boys’ finishers were Derek Hau and Juan Vallmitjana.

Hau, 14, was second in the 50-meter freestyle in a best time 26.04, dropping 0.74. He was also sixth in the 100-meter breaststroke in a best time 1:12.00 with a time drop 1.22.

Vallmitjana, 13, was second in the 400-meter individual medley in a best time 4:53.49, dropping 18.94, dipping below 5 minutes.

Ransom Everglades Aquatic Club broke the Florida Gold Coast age group record in the boys’ 13-14 400-meter freestyle relay in 3:46.87 with Nohan Gomez, Andy Serrano-Pena, Gabriel Martinez Cabrera and Jake Kotz-Agramonte. It was the first FGC JO record and first gold medal in club history. The time is ranked sixth in the nation.
