SWIMMING ROUNDUP: USA Swimming Makes Sweeping Rule Changes

By Sharon Robb
COLORADO SPRINGS, October 4, 2022—USA Swimming’s Rules and Regulations Committee approved several rule changes at its recent House of Delegates meeting. Some will take effect immediately and others on Jan. 1, 2023.

USA Swimming has eliminated the use of the terminology Junior Olympics for Age Group Championship meets. In some LSCs including the Florida Gold Coast, their Age Group Championship has historically been named Junior Olympics. LSCs are no longer allowed to call the meets Junior Olympic or JOs.

The biggest rule change is the “120 Day Rule,” which has a swimmer waiting 120 days after switching clubs to compete for his or her new club. The requirement was trimmed to 60 days after their last competition with their former team. The rule is is effective immediately.

There are also rules changes surrounding minimum requirements for officiating at LSC-sanctioned meets. At a minimum LSC’s must now require one referee, one starter, three timers per lane (unless automatic timing system is being used, in which case only one timer per lane is required), one clerk of course (if applicable), one place judge (two are preferred), two stroke judges and two turn judges or two stroke and turn judges, relay take-off judges (if applicable), one administrative official, one announcer (if applicable), and two marshals, at least one of each gender. The minimum officiating requirements are less strict for development, dual, and intrasquad meets.

There are also changes with reporting process for world and USA Swimming records. For World Records, supporting evidence must now be filed on official FINA World Record application forms, which must be submitted to the Executive Director of FINA within 14 days after the performance instead of 21 days.

For USA Swimming records, one of the key changes is that for LSC and local records, official split times may be used, provided those splits are taken with a fully automatic timing system. The record application form must be filled out, signed by the designated officials, and sent in along with the completion of pool measurement within 30 days.

PARMENTER, BOSTIC HONORED
Jimmy Parmenter, former Plantation Swim Team coach for 27 years and St. Thomas Aquinas coach now coaching in Nebraska at BT Aquatics and Brownell Talbot College Prep School, received the U.S. Masters Swimming Kerry O’Brien Coaches Award, originally named the Grassroots Coaching Award. The award, established in 2008, recognizes a USMS coach who builds masters membership in his or her community…Palm Beach Masters Swimming and Wahoo Triathlon Club founder and coach Linda Irish Bostic was named U.S. Masters Swimming 2022 Coach of the Year. Swimmer John Potts called her “a legend of adult swimming.”….

CROOKS SEC SWIMMER OF THE WEEK
Tennessee’s Jordan Crooks, a sophomore from George Town, Cayman Islands who trains with TS Aquatics, earned SEC Swimmer of the Week honors. Crooks had two wins during the Volunteers’ season-opener at UNC Wilmington. Crooks won the 50 freestyle in 19.36, top time in the nation this season. He also won the 100 butterfly in 46.81 mark, second in the SEC and third in the nation. Crooks was also a member of the winning 200 medley relay. His sister Jillian also trains with Total Swimmer (TS) Aquatics. The siblings represented the Cayman Islands at the FINA World Championships…

Florida Gulf Coast University, located in Lee County, cancelled its season-opener against Campbell scheduled for October 14-15 in Fort Myers. The athletic director said a “lack of hotel availability” for the cancellation after Hurricane Ian devastated the area. The damage left many homes destroyed in Fort Myers, forcing local residents into hotels….The Osprey Invite hosted by the University of North Florida with Florida State and Georgia Southern, was also rescheduled for Oct. 7.

TYR FEBRUARY BOY SWIMMER OF THE MONTH: Tristan Dons

By Sharon Robb
PEMBROKE PINES, March 29, 2022–Tristan Dons knows what it takes to be successful when it comes to swimming.

The American Heritage Plantation eighth grader made five Junior Olympic cut times in the 100-yard backstroke, 100- and 200-yard freestyles, 100-yard butterfly and 200-yard individual medley at the BB Championships.

And it wasn’t luck for the 13-year-old. It was hard work and dedication.

“I was very happy with five JO cuts,” Dons said. “For me it’s more about improving and if improving means getting JO cuts that’s great.”

Said his Silver Group coach Jack Davies, “Tristan lit the pool up, picking up five new JO cuts at BBs. He brings a steely focus to practice, both in terms of mechanics and effort levels.

“He consistently is leading in his lane, pushing his teammates and looking for every way he can to improve as an athlete. Having moved from New Mexico he has since truly set himself up as a leader in the group and was justly rewarded with a breakthrough finish in February.”

At Junior Olympics, Dons, 13, competed in ten events including four relays. His best individual finish was 17th in the 200-yard backstroke in a best time 2:10.86, dropping 2.52 seconds.

“I know he is looking to continue his growth as a swimmer,” Davies said. “Having a 13-year-old step up the way he has bodes extremely well in this group and beyond as he is still comparatively young, and being able to harness his passion, discipline and work ethic moving forward to the benefit not just to himself, but the training group and larger team around him.”

Dons has been swimming for nearly 10 years. He played soccer and tennis when he was younger but is focused on swimming now. His father was a national-level swimmer when he lived in the Netherlands and started both his sons in the sport.

“Swimming is a way for me to express myself,” Dons said. “It’s a reflection of how I’m feeling day to day. If I’m feeling good that day I tend to swim good and if I’m not feeling good that day I don’t tend to do as normally good as I would.

“It’s a great way for me to cool down especially after school,” Dons said. “My mind is racing and swimming is relaxing for me.”

Dons said swimming has helped him be healthier “having a sport that I am very dedicated to. If I want to be good at this one sport I have to be healthy and in shape all-around. In terms of discipline, it’s helped me with school. I’m not a terrible student, at least I hope not. It’s just a product of what my coaches over the years have taught me.”

Dons said he has improved since training at SOFLO, particularly in backstroke. His biggest meet so far as been Western Zones in the summer of 2018 while he was living in New Mexico. He swam the 50 and 100 butterfly, 50 backstroke and two relays.

His goals for the future are centered around “keep improving,” he said. “I want to have consistent improvement throughout my swimming career whether it’s seconds off the 50 or 1/100ths off the 200. I just want to keep improving and get better as a swimmer.”

Each TYR Swimmer of the Month receives a free TYR backpack.

TYR MARCH GIRL SWIMMER OF THE MONTH: Elise Dinehart

By Sharon Robb
PEMBROKE PINES, April 23, 2021–It was only natural Elise Dinehart would follow in the footsteps of her older twin sisters Elena and Olivia in swimming.

The family affair has turned into an advantage for the young talented swimmer.

Dinehart, 12, is in seventh grade and swims for Southwood Middle School along with South Florida Aquatic Club’s Mako Sharks group coached by Isidro Planell.

“It definitely helps having her sisters around,” Planell said. “They both work very hard and are positive influences for Elise when it comes to work ethic, attitude and being good people.”

Her work ethic paid off at the March 11-14 Florida Gold Coast Junior Olympics at Coral Springs and March 31-April 3 International Swim Coaches Association (ISCA) East Coast Elite Showcase Classic Championship in St. Petersburg.

Dinehart scored 34 points (ninth place in high point for 11-12 girls) at JOs where she placed third in the 200-yard individual medley in 2:18.63 dropping 4.76 seconds off her previous best; fourth in the 500-yard freestyle in 5:28.65, dropping 19.51 and fifth in the 100-yard individual medley in 1:04.23, dropping 5.95.

“I think at the end of the meet I was really, really tired,” she said. “I was really happy with all my races.”

At ISCA, she was fifth in the 200-yard breaststroke, scoring 15 points and leading SOFLO girls in high point scoring. “That was really cool, the meet was a new experience because it was national,” she said.

Dinehart has been swimming for most of her life. She was 7 when she started competing in swim meets.

“I followed my sisters in swimming,” Dinehart said. “I was swimming already but I did watch them practice. It’s an advantage having older sisters because I can look up to them. I want to be like them when I’m older.

“We’re not competitive against each other. They do help me and give me advice about meets and stuff.”

Like many of her teammates, Dinehart loves to race.

“I love being competitive and racing people a lot,” she said. “I’m glad I stayed with swimming. It’s what I want to do. I really like it. I feel like when I am not doing well in practice or a meet, the next day I get more excited to try and go faster. It motivates me.”

Swimming has helped Dinehart with her time management when it comes to school.

“I’ve been working hard in school just like I do in swimming,” Dinehart said. “There is an advantage being home schooled because I can relax more, but I really want to go back to school.”

Dinehart’s long range goals include high school and college swimming and maybe even a trip to the Olympics one day. Dinehart is also in the art magnet program at middle school where she paints and draws.

Planell enjoys coaching Dinehart and watching her progress.

“Her work ethic is incredibly admirable,” he said. “Whenever she comes on deck for practice she brings positive energy along. She usually and almost always is the first person in the water. She always asks me to watch her strokes and see where she needs improvement.

“She never backs down from the challenges I throw at her during practice. In fact, she always responds positively by accepting the challenge and pushing through the entire set whether or not she hits the mark. She truly does set the example of what it means to be a Mako.”

Each TYR Swimmer of the Month receives a free TYR backpack.

TYR MARCH BOY SWIMMER OF THE MONTH: Juan Vallmitjana

By Sharon Robb
PEMBROKE PINES, April 20, 2021–Swimming is music to Juan Vallmitjana’s ears.

The talented violinist is making great progress with Coach Rose Lockie’s Bronze Group which was evident at last month’s Junior Olympics and ISCA meets.

Vallmitjana, 12, a sixth grader at Montessori Academy, scored 51 points in 11-12 boys at JOs and 23 points at ISCA. He led SOFLO in high point scoring at both meets.

At the March 11-14 Florida Gold Coast Junior Olympics at Coral Springs, Vallmitjana was second in the 1,650-yard freestyle in a best time 18:04.71, dropping 27.26 off his previous best; second in the 200-yard individual medley in 2:16.21, dropping 7.38; and third in the 500-yard freestyle in 5:12.04, dropping 10.09. He was also second in the 200-yard freestyle in 1:58.31, the first time he swam under 2 minutes while shaving 3.34 seconds off his previous best.

“I was happy with JOs the most,” he said. “I dropped time on everything that I wanted and I got basically all of my goal times for it.”

At the March 31-April 3 International Swim Coaches Association (ISCA) East Coast Elite Showcase Classic Championship in St. Petersburg, Vallmitjana was third in the 1,000-yard freestyle in a best time 10:49.38, dropping 1:09.31. His previous best was 11:58.69. He was also fifth in the 100-yard butterfly in 1:02.11, dropping 1.67 and sixth in the 400-yard individual medley in 4:50.51, dropping 6.68 seconds.

Vallmitjana has been swimming competitively for SOFLO since he was 6. At age 2 1/2, his mother Sonia taught him water-safe basic swimming in his backyard pool.

“When I started to learn I liked it right away,” he said. “All the pictures of me I have my eyes wide open.”

Vallmitjana competed in soccer and tennis but decided to focus solely on swimming when he turned 7.

“I liked the competitiveness of swimming, the coaches and people there,” Vallmitjana said. “I like to race. I really like Coach Rose. She’s good. She’s only tough because she tries to help us get better. She brings out the best in me.”

Swimming has enabled Vallmitjana to work on his fitness and time management when it comes to school and violin practice and lessons.

“It’s definitely gotten me more fit,” he said. “It’s helped me be more interactive with people outside of my school. I like socializing with my teammates. I’ve definitely made more friends. And, it’s definitely helped me more with time management because I have to squeeze everything together.”

His favorite stroke is freestyle and when it comes to events, he loves going the distance. On Saturday he will compete in the 3,000 event at the FGC Open Water Championship in Pompano Beach. “I think it’s going to be choppy,” he said.

“I like the longer races,” Vallmitjana said. “While I’m racing I just think of my goal I want to do and the people who I want to pass and beat so I can get the time that I want and feel good about it afterwards.

“Sometimes in a race a song repeats itself over and over again in my head, just random songs I hear on the radio, and I talk to myself when I’m bored.”

Among Vallmitjana’s “smaller” goals are moving up into the Silver Group and “bigger” goals, getting his national cuts and competing at nationals. He would also like to compete on a high school team.

To relax, Vallmitjana has been playing the violin since he was 4. “It’s more of a hobby that relaxes me,” he said. “After school he practices for an hour and then heads to Academic Village Pool for swim practice. “I would like to continue playing it in the future.”

TYR FEBRUARY BOY SWIMMER OF THE MONTH: Eric Ferrer

By Sharon Robb
PEMBROKE PINES, March 25, 2021–Eric Ferrer found his favorite sport and it’s swimming.

Ferrer, 10, a fourth grader at Pembroke Pines West Elementary School, trains with Coach Luis Soler and the Asteroids.

Ferrer has been swimming with South Florida Aquatic Club for nearly three years and is improving with every meet. At last month’s Florida Gold Coast Short Course Yards BB Silver Championships South, Ferrer made four Junior Olympic cuts

“I didn’t like any of the other sports like soccer, it just got boring,” Ferrer explained.

After he was involved in taekwondo for five years and earned a black belt at age 9, his mom suggested swimming. Ferrer said taekwondo helped him with swimming with his “flexibility, confidence, muscles and strength.”

Ferrer and is younger brother Gabriel, a SOFLO Dipper, turned out to be naturals in the sport.

“I can to talk to my friends,” said Ferrer when asked what he likes so much about swimming. “I can get very competitive and I like that.”

Swimming also helps with time management and discipline, Ferrer said. He trains Monday, Wednesday and Friday, 5:30-7 p.m and Tuesday and Thursday, 7-8:30.

While he does every stroke and most events except the 100 butterfly and 500 freestyle, his favorite is the backstroke. He said his biggest meets have been BBs and JOs and attributed his success to several factors. He said his mom was a big help making him healthy smoothies before BBs and JOs.

“My mom’s good drinks with bananas and beets, stretching and practice,” Ferrer said. “I really liked JOs because having to come back for finals was fun. It was really hard swimming morning and night. I was tired but it was a good experience.”

Ferrer has several goals for the future including “getting 11-12 JOs cuts, to move up to Bronze and work on my breaststroke.”

Between school and swimming, Ferrer likes to bike and reads a lot, he said. Currently, he is reading Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix.

His mom and swimming chaffeur, Lily Ferrer said “We are very proud of him. He works really hard.

“He had already maxed out on taekwondo so we were looking for something more of an overall workout,” she said.

“We had friends that used to be a part of the club and told us about it. He had been swimming already since he was 5 so we figured that would be the next best move for him. Something individual but at the same time a team-oriented sport.”

Each TYR Swimmer of the Month receives a free TYR backpack.
