Defending Champion SOFLO Sharks Head Field For This Week’s FGC Summer Junior Olympics

STUART, July 17, 2019—It’s Show Time for South Florida Aquatic Club and another opportunity to make a little more history in Florida Gold Coast swimming.

South Florida Aquatic Club will try and build on its winning tradition and legacy at this week’s Florida Gold Coast 14&Under Long Course Summer Junior Olympic Championships.

The four-day meet begins Thursday at Sailfish Splash Water Park. Last year the final night of the meet was cancelled because of bad weather.

SOFLO is going after its tenth consecutive JO long course team title and 11th overall in club history. SOFLO has also won back-to-back short and long course JO titles six times.

In March, SOFLO won the FGC 14&Under Short Course JOs for a record tenth overall combined in the club’s 19-year history. SOFLO won the boys title with 524 points ahead of runnerup FAST (401). SOFLO girls finished runnerup by just 18 points behind Pine Crest.

SOFLO, defending champion in combined, has qualified 58 individual swimmers in 302 events. SOFLO has also entered 40 relay teams where it will rely on its depth to pick up points against talented but less deep FGC teams.

Last year SOFLO won the combined team title with 579.50 ahead of runner-up Pine Crest with 448 and FAST with 414.50. Pine Crest girls won with 378 and SOFLO was second with 297. FAST boys won with 321.50 and SOFLO boys were runnerup with 282.50 points.

SOFLO swimmers making their final JO long course meet appearance are 14-year-olds Samuel Bullen, Elena Dinehart, Olivia Dinehart, Nathaniel Garrick, Logan Gonzalez, Sophia Grubbs, Zackary Harris, Christopher Hau, Matthew Kim, Alejandro Mateus, Sabrina Osorio, Sofia Osorio, Madeline Smutny, Yanjun Wang and Aldo Zepeda.

The meet features 14-and-under swimmers who have achieved the JO time standards for the event entered.

Among top teams in the meet are Pine Crest, Azura, FAST, Jupiter, Hialeah, Swim Fort Lauderdale and Sunrise.

It is the fourth time the meet will be co-hosted by FGC clubs Martin County Swimming and North Palm Beach Swim Club at Sailfish Splash Water Park, site of the annual FHSAA State High School Swimming and Diving meet for the past six years.

Samuel Quintero Double Winner In Opening Session Of NPB Summer Kickoff

June 1, 2019—Samuel Quintero was a double winner in the first session of the 11th annual North Palm Beach Long Course Summer Kickoff Saturday at Plantation Central Park Aquatic Complex.

Swimming unattached for South Florida Aquatic Club after three great weeks of training at Academic Village Pool, Quintero, 18, won the 400-meter individual medley in 4:54.72, nearly five seconds ahead of Patrick Doyle, 16, of Sunrise in 4:59.88. Only Quintero and Doyle cracked five minutes.

Quintero also won the 100-meter breaststroke in a best time 1:08.83, shaving 0.57 off his previous best of 1:09.40.

SOFLO teammate Marco Cabrera Duarte, 18, won the 200-meter backstroke in 2:10.82 followed by runner-up and teammate Lance Lesage, 16, in 2:12.84

Heath Brames was fourth in the 200-meter freestyle in 2:03.82. Austin Nelson was fifth in the 200-meter backstroke in a best time 2:26.29.

SOFLO’s top women’s finisher was Vien Nguyen, 22. The Vietnamese Olympian and national record holder was second in the 200-meter backstroke in 2:28.58; third in the 100-meter breaststroke in a best time 1:21.37, dropping 0.39; and fourth in the 100-meter butterfly in 1:08.61.

Kelley Heron was third in the 200-meter backstroke in 2:29.88. Melissa Marinheiro was fourth in the 200-meter freestyle in 2:18.43.

SOFLO has the largest team with 83 swimmers entered in 394 time final races.

The meet, one of the Florida Gold Coast’s top summer meets, has attracted some of the Florida Gold Coast’s top teams including Azura, Boca Raton Swim Team, SwimFast, Martin County, Swim Fort Lauderdale, Miami Swimming and hosts North Palm Beach and Plantation Swim Team.

Session Two for the younger age group swimmers is scheduled to get underway 1:30 p.m. on Saturday.

SOFLO Heads Field For NPB Summer Kickoff This Weekend At Plantation Central Park Aquatic Complex

May 30, 2019—South Florida Aquatic Club heads the field for this weekend’s 11th annual North Palm Beach Long Course Summer Kickoff at Plantation Central Park Aquatic Complex.

Plantation Swim Team and City of Plantation are hosting one of the biggest meets of the summer while North Palm Beach Swim Club officials are running it on Saturday and Sunday.

SOFLO has the largest team with 83 swimmers entered in 394 time final races.

The SOFLO contingent features a talented group of swimmers from Vietnamese Olympian and national record holder Vien Thianh Nguyen to collegians back for the summer including Heath Brames (University of Massachusetts), Kelley Heron (Michigan State), Melissa Marinheiro (Florida Gulf Coast) and C.J. Kopecki (Seton Hall) to high school and age group swimmers.

Among other SOFLO swimmers competing are Jemma Baldwin, 8, Fiorella Di Salvo, 11, Ryan Harries, 11, Lance Lesage, 16, Oleksii Viazmetinov, 10, and Juan Vallmitjana, 10.
