Ponte Vedra Girls Repeat, Nease Boys Win State 3A Team Titles; Collingwood Broward’s Lone State Champion; SOFLO’s Colmenares Takes Bronze

STUART, November 5, 2022—It was a tough day for Broward County teams and swimmers at the FHSAA State 3A Swimming and Diving Championships Friday at Sailfish Splash Waterpark.

St. Thomas Aquinas senior Samuel Collingwood was the only swimmer to capture a state title.

In his final state appearance, Collingwood won the 50-yard freestyle in a best time 20.69, dropping 0.43. He was second fastest qualifier in prelims in 20.82. He was also second in the 100 freestyle in 46.08, also a best time dropping 1.29 and led off the Raiders’ third place 400-yard freestyle relay.

Everglades’ Javier Colmenares, who trains with South Florida Aquatic Club, was third in the 100-yard breaststroke in 56.55. He swam his best time of 55.92 in prelims where he was second fastest qualifier dropping 1.84 off his previous best. He was also fifth in the 200-yard individual medley in 1:53.70. He swam a best time 1:53.67 in prelims, dropping 2.14.

St. Thomas girls top finishers were Julianne McCranie and senior diver Kaitlyn Raby.

McCranie, a junior, was second in the 100-yard backstroke in 56.97 and third in the 100-yard butterfly in 54.87. Raby was third with 438.60 points.

SOFLO’s Mariann Catalasan was a member of St. Thomas Aquinas’ third place 200-yard medley relay that finished in 1:48.26 along with teammates McCranie, Teresa Landron and Jade Renaud.

Other SOFLO 3A individual qualifiers were Nathaniel Garrick and Calista Harries of Archbishop McCarthy; Alejandro Mateus of Everglades and Zackary Harris of Pembroke Pines Charter.

Pembroke Pines Charter’s 200 medley (Zackary Harris, Abraham Penaloza, Christian Tijero and Luca Hincapie) and 400 freestyle (Christian Tijero, Karvin Ortiz, Luca Hincapie, Zackary Harris) relay members were also SOFLO swimmer qualifiers.

St. Thomas Aquinas was fourth among boys teams with 143 points and fifth among girls teams with 166. Ponte Vedra repeated at girls champions winning with 340.5, more than 100 points ahead of runner-up St. Petersburg with 211. Nease won the boys title with 290 points. Tampa Jesuit was second with 245.

St. Thomas Aquinas Sweeps Team Titles At Region 4-3A Swimming and Diving Championships; SOFLO’s Catalasan, Colmenares Win Region Titles


STUART, October 29, 2022–St. Thomas Aquinas girls and boys teams set themselves up nicely for a Top 3 finish at next week’s Class 3A state meet.

The Raiders dominated the Region 4-3A Swimming and Diving Championships at Sailfish Splash Waterpark by sweeping the boys and girls team titles.

The girls team swept all three relays and won seven individual events to total 505 points. South Fork was a distant second with 214.

The boys team won two relays and four individual events to finish with 466 points. Belen Jesuit was runner-up with 291.

Julianne McCranie and Anastasia Lutz were double winners for the Raiders. McCranie won the 100-yard butterfly in 56.36 and 100-yard backstroke in 58.06. Lutz won the 50-yard freestyle in 24.63 and 100-yard freestyle in 53.91. Teammate Jade Renaud won the 200-yard individual medley in 2:15.23.

Kaitlyn Raby was among St. Thomas winners, capturing the 1-meter diving title with 495.55 points.

Alex Mansur was a double winner for the Raider boys in the 200-yard freestyle in 1:42.52 and 100-yard freestyle in 47.03 and anchored the winning 200- and 400-yard freestyle relays.

Samuel Collingwood and Gabriel Tortola also won region titles for the Raiders in the 50-yard and 500-yard freestyles respectively.

South Florida Aquatic Club’s Mariann Catalasan, a junior at St. Thomas Aquinas, won the 100-yard breaststroke in 1:08.43 and was a member of the winning 200-yard medley relay.

SOFLO teammate Javier Colmenares of Everglades won the 200-yard individual medley in 1:55.81 and 100-yard breaststroke in 57.76. SOFLO and Everglades teammate Alejandro Mateus took second in the 100-yard butterfly and 100-yard backstroke.

Kaitlyn Jorgensen of Pembroke Pines Charter won the 200-yard freestyle in 1:56.06.

The FHSAA State 3A meet is Friday, Nov. 4 at Sailfish Splash Waterpark in Stuart. The state qualifiers and psych sheet will be posted at fhsaa.org after the completion of all region meets around the state.

St. Thomas Aquinas Sweeps District 11-3A Team Titles; SOFLO’s Catalasan, Vasquez, Colmenares, Mateus Win

CORAL SPRINGS, October 21, 2022—Defending champion St. Thomas Aquinas dominated the field to sweep the boys and girls team titles in the District 11-3A Swimming and Diving Championships Friday at Coral Springs Aquatic Complex.

The Raider girls swept all three relays and won seven individual events including diving to win the team title with an impressive 616 points among the 10-team field. Pembroke Pines Charter was second with 336.

The Raider boys also swept all three relays and won four individual events to win with 596 points ahead of Pembroke Pines Charter with 386. Seven boys teams competed.

South Florida Aquatic Club swimmers captured seven individual events and played a role on a winning relay.

Mariann Catalasan of St. Thomas Aquinas won the 200-yard individual medley in 2:17.76 and 100-yard breaststroke in 1:08.74. Catalasan was also a member of the winning 200-yard medley relay.

Sarah Vasquez, also of St. Thomas Aquinas, won the 500-yard freestyle in 5:20.85 and was second in 2:02.90.

Other St. Thomas Aquinas district champions were double winners Julianne McCranie in the 100-yard butterfly in 58.85 and 100-yard backstroke in 1:01.01. Anastasia Lutz won the 100-yard freestyle in 55.99.

SOFLO’s Javier Colmenares and Alejandro Mateus were double winners for Everglades.

Colmenares won the 200-yard individual medley in 2:00.00 and 100-yard breaststroke in 59.25.

Mateus won the 100-yard butterfly in 53.87 and 100-yard backstroke in 54.88.

Alex Mansur led the Raiders winning two events in the 200-yard freestyle in 1:44.12 and 100-yard freestyle in 47.84.

Other St. Thomas Aquinas winners were Samuel Collingwood in the 50-yard freestyle in 21.70 and Gabriel Tortola in the 500-yard freestyle in 4:51.83.

St. Thomas Aquinas’ Kaitlyn Raby won the 1-meter diving title with 460.70 points.

St. Thomas Aquinas Girls Win, Boys Second At 31st Florida Catholic Invitational

ORLANDO—St. Thomas Aquinas girls defended their title and boys team was runner-up Saturday night at the 31st annual Florida Catholic Invitational at Lake Highland Aquatic Center.

The Raider girls, buoyed by two relay wins and three individual wins won with 583 points ahead of Bishop Kenny (501), Cardinal Gibbons (297) and Archbishop McCarthy (238).

The Raiders’ 200-yard medley relay won in 1:50.95 with Julianne McCranie, Mariann Catalasan, Teresa Landron and Jade Renaud. The 400-yard free relay won in 3:45.81 with Sarah Vasquez, Ana Lutz, Mia Gelin and McCranie.

Vasquez and Catalasan train with South Florida Aquatic Club. Catalasan was also second in the 200 IM in 2:19.91 and 100 breaststroke in 1:10.11. Vasquez was third in the 500 freestyle in 5:24.58.

The Raiders’ Jade Renaud, Ana Lutz and McCranie won individual events. Renaud won the 200 IM in 2:16.96, Lutz won the 50 freestyle in 24.84 and McCranie won the 100 backstroke in 57.34.

The only other Broward girls’ winner was Jaclyn Nelson of Cardinal Gibbons in the 100-yard freestyle in 54.39.

St. Thomas Aquinas boys team were second with 460 points behind Bishop Kenny with 479 followed by Archbishop McCarthy (202), St. Joseph’s (150) and Cardinal Gibbons (138).

Alex Mansur was a double winner for the Raiders in the 200-yard freestyle in 1:43.89 and 100-yard freestyle in 47.68.

Cardinal Gibbons had two winners. Marcus Szabo won the 100-yard butterfly in 51.61 and Mason Starkman won the 1-meter diving title.

South Florida Aquatic Club’s Nathaniel Garrick of Archbishop McCarthy broke his own team record in the 500-yard freestyle in 4:58.49. It was a lifetime best for the team captain and national merit scholar with a time drop of 5.11 and first time he dipped below 5 minutes.

SOFLO Swimmers Off To Good Start On Day One Of FGC Short Course BB South Championships

PEMBROKE PINES, February 25, 2022—South Florida Aquatic Club swimmers got off to a good start on opening day of the Florida Gold Coast Short Course BB South Championships Friday at Academic Village Pool.

SOFLO had four individual winners in the 500-yard freestyle and 400-yard individual medley events.

Saree Young, 12, won the 11-12 500-yard freestyle in a best time 5:49.87, dropping 11.45 seconds off her previous best. Teammate Sofia Rodriguez, 11, was second in a best time 5:59.88, dropping 9.43 seconds and breaking 6 minutes for the first time.

Mariann Catalasan, 15, won the 15-18 500-yard freestyle in a best time 5:32.37, dropping 3.06.

Toma Petkov, 9, won the 7-10 500-yard freestyle in a best time 6:43.35, dropping 13.97.

Eric Ferrer, 11, won the 11-12 400-yard individual medley in a best time 5:20.46, dropping 1.74.

The three-day meet, hosted by SOFLO and Comets Swim Team Booster Club, continues on Saturday and Sunday with boys and girls morning prelims at 9 a.m. and finals at 6 p.m. The 1,650-yard freestyle is Sunday at 4 p.m. between sessions.

Host SOFLO has the largest team entered with 79 swimmers (42 boys and 37 girls) in 346 individual events.

St. Thomas Aquinas Sweeps District 11-3A Titles; Pembroke Pines Charter Runners-up

CORAL SPRINGS, October 28, 2021–St. Thomas Aquinas swept the team titles at the District 11-3A Swimming and Diving Championships Thursday at Coral Springs Aquatic Complex.

The girls’ team defended its’ title and won its third consecutive championship with 615 points. Pembroke Pines Charter was runner-up with 417 points.

St. Thomas boys team, third last year, won the team title with 488 points. Pembroke Pines Charter was also runner-up with 426 points.

Pembroke Pines Charter boys and girls teams are coached by South Florida Aquatic Club head age group coach Rose Lockie. She is coaching her final year of high school swimming.

St. Thomas Aquinas swept all three girls relays and had two individual winners, Mariann Catalasan and Julianne McCranie.

Catalasan, a sophomore, won her first district title in the 200-yard individual medley in 2:16.36. Last year she was third in 2:27.24. She was also second in the 100-yard breaststroke in 1:07.60 for the second consecutive year. Last year she finished in 1:15.48.

McCranie, also a sophomore, defended her title in the 100-yard backstroke in 1:02.11 and was second in the 100-yard butterfly in 1:00.59 in one of the more exciting races of the meet. Seminole Ridge sophomore Taylor Rizzi won in 1:00.31.

Pembroke Pines Charter finished runner-up in the girls’ 200-yard medley relay and 400-yard freestyle relay and won four individual events.

Senior Victoria Torres was a double winner for Pembroke Pines Charter. She won the 100-yard freestyle in 54.43 and 100-yard breaststroke in 1:07.60.

Jaguar teammates Kaitlyn Jorgensen won the 200-yard freestyle in 2:00.52 and Sarah Vazquez won the 500-yard freestyle in 5:26.57.

St. Thomas Aquinas boys’ team was just as impressive as the girls. The Raiders won the 200- and 400-yard freestyle relays and won three individual events.

The Raiders were led by freshman Alex Mansur, winning the 200-yard freestyle in 1:44.22 and 100-yard freestyle in 48.45, in another exciting race just ahead of Landon Emmons of Seminole Ridge in 48.86. Emmons won the 50-yard freestyle in 22.32.

Mansur also led a Raider sweep in the 200-yard freestyle in 1:44.22 followed by teammates Gabriel Tortola, a freshman, in 1:48.79 and Matthew Tan, a sophomore, in 1:50.62. Tortola also won the 500-yard freestyle in 4:50.90.

Everglades was led by the one-two punch of Javier Colmenares and Alejandro Mateus, both double winners.

Colmenares won the 200-yard individual medley in 2:05.79 and 100-yard breaststroke in 1:00.36.

Mateus won the 100-yard butterfly in 54.75 and 100-yard backstroke in 55.20.

St. Thomas Aquinas Raiders Sweep Flanagan In Season Opener

PLANTATION, September 10, 2021—St. Thomas Aquinas won its BCAA season opener Thursday at Plantation Aquatic Complex.

Despite the majority of Thursday meets cancelled because of bad weather, the Raiders girls defeated Flanagan, 145-20, and the Raiders boys won 138.5-21.5. West Broward was scheduled for the tri-meet but did not attend.

The girls were led by double winners Julianne McCranie and Anna Kline.

McCranie won the 100-yard butterfly in 59.97 and 100-yard backstroke in 1:03.22.

Kline won the 200-yard freestyle in 2:11.75 and 500-yard freestyle in 5:57.38.

Mariann Catalasan won the 200-yard individual medley in 2:23.53.

The Raiders swept all six girls and boys relays.

The boys were led by double winners Matthew Tan and Jack Faulkner.

Tan won the 200-yard freestyle in 1:53.72 and 500-yard freestyle in 5:13.47.

SOFLO Swimmers Shine On Final Day Of FGC BB Silver South Long Course Championships

POMPANO BEACH, July 18, 2021—South Florida Aquatic Club swimmers had another outstanding day of racing at the Florida Gold Coast BB Silver South Long Course Championships Sunday at Pompano Beach Aquatic Center.

While no team scores were kept, SOFLO swimmers dominated the three-day meet and came up with 40 more qualifying times for this week’s Florida Gold Coast Junior Olympics.

“Congrats on another very successful BB Championship meet, way to go SOFLO,” SOFLO head coach Chris Anderson wrote from Tokyo, Japan where he arrived on Monday to coach SOFLO’s Alia Atkinson of Jamaica and Julio Horrego of Honduras in his fifth Olympic coaching appearance.

For the second day in a row, Mackenzie McPherson, 11, was a double winner in the 100-meter butterfly in a best time 1:20.83 and 200-meter individual medley in 2:52.72, another best time. She dropped 3.34 in the butterfly and 9.09 in the 200 IM. She was also third in the 100-meter freestyle in a best time 1:10.67, dropping 1.78.

McPherson finished with six new time standards for JOs in the 100 back, 50, 100 and 200 freestyles, 100 butterfly and 200 IM.

Other SOFLO winners were:

Gabriella Ordonez, 10, 100-meter butterfly, 1:41.61.

Saree Young, 11, 50-meter backstroke, 37.18, a new JO time.

Mariann Catalasan, 15, 200-meter individual medley, 2:39.25, time drop 3.67.

Benjamin Kim, 13, 200-meter breaststroke, 2:56.14, a new JO time.

Ian Barrios, 12, meter butterfly, 1:19.66, time drop 3.68. He had two JO qualifying times including the 100 butterfly.

Carlos Salas, 14, 100-meter butterfly, 1:08.99, time drop 3.79, a new JO time.

Ethan Hall, 11, 50-meter breaststroke, 40.57, time drop 3.64, one of three new JO times.

Maximiliano Remmele, 12, 200-meter individual medley, 2:49.79, a new JO time.

Other swimmers who picked up one or more JO times at BBs were Gabriela Avila, Matteo Castelli, Daniel Chaussky, Elise Dinehart, Marvan Ekanayake, Sofia Gomez, Felix Gonzalez, Luca Hincapie, Ethan McPeek, Isabella Montes, Carlos Rincon, Felipe Rodriguez and Sarah Vasquez.

South Florida Aquatic Club had 57 swimmers (31 boys and 26 girls) compete in 215 individual events.

The meet was cancelled in 2020 because of the pandemic. In 2019, SOFLO won the combined, boys and girls team titles at Sunrise Civic Center.

In addition to SOFLO and host Pompano Beach Piranhas, other FGC teams that competed were Hurricane Aquatics, Florida Keys Swim Club, SwimFast, North Miami Swim Team, Olympus, Cooper City Cyclones, Hialeah, Gulliver, Miami Country Day, Eagle Aquatics, Shelton Doral, Midtown Weston, Metro Aquatics, Blue Marlins of Hialeah Gardens, Miami Swimming and Ransom Everglades.

SOFLO’s Vasquez, Catalasan, Dinehart, Tijero Win In Best Times On Day One Of FGC BB Silver South Long Course Championships

POMPANO BEACH, July 16, 2021—South Florida Aquatic Club captured four events at the Florida Gold Coast BB Silver South Long Course Championships Friday night at Pompano Beach Aquatic Center.

The girls team won three of seven age group races and boys team won one of six races.

Sarah Vasquez, 13, won the 13-14 400-meter freestyle in a best time 4:58.76, dropping 6.45 seconds off her previous best of 5:05.21.

Mariann Catalasan, 15, won the 15-18 400-meter freestyle in a best time of 5:05.50. Her yards entry time was 5:45.93.

Elise Dinehart, 13, won the 13-14 400-meter individual medley in a best time 5:43.34, dropping 17.54 seconds and breaking 6 minutes for the first time. Her previous best was 6:00.88.

Christian Tijero, 15, won the 400-meter individual medley in a best time 5:20.42, dropping 7.41 seconds. His previous best was 5:27.83.

South Florida Aquatic Club heads the field with 57 swimmers (31 boys and 26 girls) in 215 individual events.

Saturday events are: 200-meter butterfly, 100-meter backstroke, 50 freestyle, 50 butterfly, 100 breaststroke and 200 freestyle. Prelims are 9 a.m. and finals 6 p.m.

The 100’s strokes during prelims have been consolidated from separate age groups into one group. So instead of having an 11-12, 13-14, 15-18 100 butterfly, for example, it will be a multi- aged 11-18 100 butterfly in prelims. Finals will swim as 11-12, 13-14, and 15-18.

Parents are asked to come in, watch their swimmer race and then leave the deck to allow space for others to do the same.

Admission and parking are free.

During the competition the latest meet information will be posted on the Piranhas’ website, http://www.pompanopiranhas.com once there click on FGC BB Silver South Championship button there. Results will also be posted on Meet Mobile.

The FGC BB Silver North Long Course Championships are being hosted by Boca Raton Swim Team, also Friday through Saturday. The teams are Azura Florida Aquatics, Coral Springs, East Coast Aquatics, FAST, Hammerhead Aquatics, Heritage Aquatic Team, Jupiter Dragons, Lake Lytal Lightning, Martin County, North Palm Beach, PAQ, Pine Crest, Plantation, St. Andrew’s Aquatics, Sunrise, Swim Fort Lauderdale, TS Aquatics, Tsunamis and Wahoos of Wellington.

SOFLO Swimmers Race Well On Opening Day Of SoFlo Memorial Day Intrasquad Long Course Challenge

PEMBROKE PINES, May 28, 2021—South Florida Aquatic Club swimmers got in some much-needed racing on Day One of the SoFlo Memorial Day Intrasquad Long Course Challenge on Friday.

The three-day meet, part of a holiday meet doubleheader at Academic Village Pool, is giving 114 SOFLO swimmers (64 boys and 50 girls) the opportunity to race and fine tune.

The 400-meter freestyle and 400-meter individual medley were held on opening day.

In the girls’ 400-meter freestyle, Jemma Baldwin, 10; Elise Dinehart, 12; Amelie Bicerne, 13; and Lucy Smutny, 18, won their age group titles.

In the boys’ 400-meter freestyle, Eric Ferrer, 10; Juan Vallmitjana, 12; Javier Colmenares, 14; and Ivan Grass, 16, won their age group titles.

Mariann Catalasan, 15, won the 15-18 400-meter individual medley in a best time 5:48.36. Gabriella DeLuna, 14, won the 13-14 age group in 5:28.18.

Nicholas Pelaez, 14, won the 13-14 and Alan Bertea, 17, won the 15-18 boys age group titles in the 400 IM.

On Saturday and Sunday, each session begins 12:30 p.m. The meet is being live streamed.

All COVID-19 pandemic safety precautions will be observed. The venue will not be open to spectators. Face coverings must be worn at all times within the venue. Non-compliance will result in ejection from the venue and school grounds. Only athletes, coaches, officials and volunteers will be allowed on the pool deck.
