For the second year in a row, Archbishop McCarthy finished runner-up at the 23rd annual Florida Catholic Swimming and Diving Championships Saturday in Orlando.

The Mavericks, coached by South Florida Aquatic Club age group coach Megan Garland, finished with 311 points, bettering last year’s total by eight points.

It is the team’s best finish in the program’s history and also the first time Archbishop McCarthy had two individual boys’ champions.

Kry Nichlany won the 100-yard butterfly in a season-best 52.51 and Matthew Mila won the 100-yard breaststroke in 1:02.65, another season-best.

The Mavericks’ 400-yard freestyle relay of Kry Nichlany, JoJo Perez, Philippe Coppee and Matthew Mila was second in 3:25.72.

Archbishop McCarthy finished fourth in the combined team standings with 420 points. The girls’ team finished eighth with 109 points.

St. Thomas Aquinas used its depth and talent to dominate the 18-team field.

The Raiders swept the combined (1,115 points), girls (568) and boys team titles (547) to defend their titles.

Despite graduating several top swimmers including Brandon Goldman, now a freshman at Lousiana State University, the Raiders had at least one swimmer finish among the top four.

St. Thomas Aquinas girls and boys were equally impressive, sweeping all six relays.

St. Thomas’ Mia Fiorenzi was a double winner in the 50-yard freestyle in a season-best 24.71 and 100-yard butterfly in 57.70, another season-best.

Raiders teammate Samantha Stinemire won the 100-yard backstroke in 58.08, second fastest time in the county this year. It was also a best time this year for Stinemire bettering her seed time of 1:01.28.

Natalya Wozab, also of St. Thomas Aquinas, won the 100-yard breaststroke in a season-best 1:10.50.

Raiders diver Karlee Price finished runner-up on 1-meter springboard with 282.75 points, just 15 points out of first.

The Raiders boys were led by double winner Gabriel Perez Silva and individual winner Esteban Velasquez.

Silva won the 50-yard freestyle in a season-best 21.73 and 100-yard freestyle in 47.79, also a season-best.

Velasquez won the 200-yard individual medley in a season-best 2:02.10.

Cardinal Gibbons’ Zachary Allen won the diving title with 255.65 points.

Archbishop McCarthy Opens Rebuilding Season At Home

Archbishop McCarthy Opens Rebuilding Season At Home

WRITTEN BY SHARON ROBB

September 12, 2013

While veterans Kry Nichlany, Matthew Mila and JoJo Perez confidently walked on the Academic Village Pool deck, there were more than a few opening meet jitters among the younger, more inexperienced swimmers.

But once the Mavericks gathered together for the team cheer before their Wednesday night meet against Doral Academy and South Florida Heat, the atmosphere turned fun.

Nichlany, Mila and Perez, all state qualifiers last year, won four individual events and two relays in the Mavericks’ only victory of the night, 61-37, over South Florida Heat.

The trio were members of the winning 200-yard medley relay in 1:47.12 and 400-yard freestyle relay in 3:28.77.

Nichlany was a double winner in the 200-yard individual medley (2:07.65) and 100-yard butterfly (55.13). Mila also won two events in the 50-yard freestyle (27.74) and 100-yard breaststroke (1:03.72). Against Doral, Perez won the 500-yard freestyle in 5:23.69.

Nichlany, Perez and Mila have an excellent chance of returning to the state meet in Stuart in November. The trio is filling the void left by the graduation of Ryan Hall.

For Mavericks coach Megan Garland, a South Florida Aquatic Club-based age group coach, it was refreshing to work with so many new high school swimmers.

“Hosting the first meet is always a little crazy,” Garland said. “Training the parents is almost as important as training the kids. The parents were great. I actually got a chance to watch the races, see the kids swim and got some splits.

“The kids looked like they had fun and that’s what I was looking for,” Garland said. “To me that’s what high school swimming is all about.

“I don’t have tryouts. I take all kids and all abilities. I try to teach them everything I can about swimming in the short amount of time that we have. Have fun, make friends. These guys really become close as a team and they are such good kids.”

Last year the swimmers progressed as the season wore on. Garland said every swimmer improved their times each week.

“They got better every single meet and that’s what I look for,” Garland said.

Garland had a record 61 swimmers come out for the team. She didn’t turn anyone away. She has only five club swimmers on the team.

“We have a lot of new kids and only brought in two club swimmers,” Garland said. “It is definitely a learning and rebuilding year. I don’t know what we are going to do at the end of the season.”

SOFLO’s Colon, Mila, Parada Qualify For State 2A Meet

WRITTEN BY SHARON ROBB

November 4, 2012

With so many high quality swimmers, the Region 4-2A Swimming and Diving Championships at Florida Gulf Coast University felt more like a state meet than a region meet.

Archbishop McCarthy and Pembroke Pines Charter did manage to qualify its top boys swimmers for the FHSAA State 2A Swimming and Diving Championships on Thursday at the Orlando YMCA Aquatic Center.

Pembroke Pines Charter senior Ivan Parada leads the SOFLO contingent. Parada is seeded 13th in the 100-yard freestyle in 48.93 and 22nd in the 200-yard backstroke in 56.29.

Archbishop McCarthy senior Ryan Hall will return to state in one individual event and two relays. Hall qualified in the 100-yard freestyle and is seeded 18th in 49.22.

Mavericks teammate Kry Nichlany, a junior who trains with the Davie Nadadores, qualified in the 100-yard butterfly and is seeded 16th in 53.60.

Archbishop McCarthy also qualified its 200- and 400-yard freestyle relays. The 200 free relay is seeded 16h in 1:31.49 with Matthew Mila, JoJo Perez, Nichlany and Hall.

The 400 free relay is seeded 13th in 3:19.91 with the same foursome.

SOFLO’s Jordan Colon, a sophomore at Mater Academy, qualified for his first state meet in the 100-yard breaststroke. He is seeded 17th for states with a best time of 1:02.55.

Pembroke Pines Charter and Archbishop McCarthy boys teams had their 200-yard medley relay teams disqualified for early take-off and stroke infraction.

Riviera Beach Suncoast won the girls team title with 343 points, an 18-point margin over runner-up Naples Gulf Coast.

Boys powerhouse Miami Belen Jesuit won the boys team title by nearly 100 points with 353 points ahead of Gulf Coast with 258.

For Belen, senior Julian Ballestas won the 100 freestyle (46.17) and was on two winning relays. Junior Boleck De Pawlikowski won the 100 backstroke (52.70) and was on two winning relays. Belen Jesuit also swept the 200 medley relay (1:38.92), 200 freestyle relay (1:28.52) and 400 freestyle relay (3:13.36).

Senior Hannah Vandersluis of Suncoast won the 200 individual medley (2:07.84) and 100 breaststroke (1:06.88). Her little sister, Francesca, a freshman, was second in the 100 breaststroke in 1:08.97.

Senior Daniela Sorgente of Dreyfoos School of the Arts won the girls diving title with 466.45 points.

Senior Lauren Suarez of Forest Hill won the 100-yard freestyle (52.72). Sisters Lauren, Kristen and Julie Suarez won the 200 freestyle relay (1:41.58) and are the first sister trio to qualify on the same relay for the state meet.
