Boca Raton Girls Knock Off Cypress Bay To Win Region 4-4A Meet; Cypress Bay Boys Defend Title; SOFLO’s Bono, Schleicher, Banks, Lane Win

BOCA RATON, November 11, 2019—Boca Raton girls team stunned defending champion Cypress Bay to capture the Region 4-4A Swimming and Diving Championships Friday at the Boca Raton High School Aquatic Center.

The Bobcat girls, led by double winners Ella Martinez and Paige Maceachern, two winning relays and top three diver sweep, won with 374 points. Cypress Bay was runner-up with 328. Cooper City was third with 249. The girls field featured 22 teams.

Cypress Bay defended its boys title with 266 points, just six points ahead of Miami Palmetto with 260 to top a field of 24 boys. Boca Raton was third with 237 points.

Deerfield Beach won the 200-yard medley relay and 200-yard freestyle relay. The Bucks’ Carter Carlson won the 100-yard breaststroke in 58.47 and was second in the 100-yard freestyle in 46.91.

South Broward’s Alex Marrero won the 100-yard backstroke in 52.59.

Jacob Wienants, the son of former Fort Lauderdale Swim Team and University of Miami swimmer Kurt Wienants, led off Miami Palmetto’s winning 400-yard freestyle relay that won in 3:11.49 with teammates Christian Perez, Roberto Valdes and Kyle Korvick.

South Florida Aquatic Club had two individual and two relay region champions.

Coral Reef junior Dominic Bono was a double winner in the 200-yard individual medley in 1:55.09 and 500-yard freestyle in 4:39.96.

Mallory Schleicher of Cooper City won the 500-yard freestyle in 4:57.23 and was second in the 200-yard freestyle in 1:52.61.

SOFLO’s Gaby Banks led off and Paige Lane swam third leg on Cypress Bay’s winning 200-yard freestyle relay that won in 1:38.04 with teammates Jemma Kelly Lane and Nicol Bellardi.

Cooper City’s Tyler Flowers won the 1-meter diving title with 507.75 points, nearly a 200-point margin. Emilie Moore of Boca Raton won the girls title with 512.70 points followed by teammates Brooke Goedel and Grace Koenig.

Cypress Bay Sweeps Everglades, Pompano Beach, Finishes Dual Meet Season Undefeated, Ready For Districts

POMPANO BEACH, October 11, 2019–Cypress Bay is more than ready for the post-season after finishing the regular season undefeated after Thursday wins over Pompano Beach and Everglades.

The Lightning girls defeated Pompano Beach, 132-53, and Everglades, 136-41. In the other matchup, Pompano Beach topped Everglades, 111-58.

Cypress Bay swept all three girls relays and won four individual events including Paige Lane in the 100-yard freestyle in 55.68.

Everglades had three individual winners including Sarah Acevedo in the 100-yard backstroke in 1:06.84.

The Lightning boys defeated Pompano Beach, 107-63, and Everglades, 102-65. Pompano Beach edged Everglades, 85-84, in the other matchup.

Cypress Bay won two boys relays and had three individual winners including Philopatier Ibrahim in the 200-yard individual medley in 2:00.69.

Among winners for Everglades were Juan Colmenares and Alejandro Mateus.

Christina Hilton of Pompano Beach won the 1-meter diving with 225.85 points. Double winner Rafael Santos, Alexandro Marquez and Lorelei Bennett led the Tornadoes with wins.

With plenty of talent and depth, Cypress Bay will now fine tune to try and defend its title at the Oct. 29 District 10-4A at the Coral Springs Aquatic Complex Michael Lohberg School of Champions.

Cypress Bay Dominates Season Opener With Impressive Wins

WESTON, August 29, 2019—-Cypress Bay, the most dominant Broward County public high school swim program last season, took up where it left off in its season opener.

With talent and depth, Cypress Bay girls defeated St. Thomas Aquinas, 170-110, and Coral Glades, 191-77.

Cypress Bay boys were just as impressive defeating St. Thomas Aquinas, 173-97, and Coral Glades, 163.50-100.50.

The girls swept all three relays and won every individual event except one.

SOFLO’s Paige Lane was the only double winner capturing the 200-yard freestyle in 1:59.94 and 100-yard freestyle in 57.33.

SOFLO’s Gaby Banks, coming off the FINA World Junior Championships for Jamaica, won the 50-yard freestyle in 24.35.

Jack D’Avi led the Cypress Bay boys with two wins in the 50-yard freestyle in 22.88 and 100-yard freestyle in 50.50.

SOFLO’s Philopatier Ibrahim won the 500-yard freestyle in 4:55.02 for Cypress Bay.

SOFLO’s Lance Lesage was St. Thomas Aquinas only individual winner in the 100-yard backstroke in 52.80. Lesage was coming off the Speedo Junior Championships.

SOFLO’s Mallory Schleicher Fifth On Day Two Of USA Swimming Futures Championships; Podkoscielny Gets First U.S. Olympic Trials Cut

GREENSBORO, N.C., August 2, 2019—Mallory Schleicher was top finisher for South Florida Aquatic Club at the USA Swimming Futures Championships Friday at Greensboro Aquatic Center.

Against a fast field, Schleicher, 15, was fifth in the 400-meter individual medley in a lifetime-best 4:58.69 with a time drop of 4.21 seconds. She qualified eighth in morning prelims in 5:04.45.

It was the first time Schleicher cracked the 5-minute barrier in the 400 IM.

Pine Crest’s Julia Podkoscielny, 14, won the 400 IM in 4:50.42, also a best time with a 4.52 time drop, another 5-minute cracked barrier and even more impressive, her first U.S. Olympic Trials cut.

Schleicher was also a member of SOFLO’s eighth place women’s 400-meter freestyle relay in 3:59.94 with teammates Olivia Dinehart, Gaby Banks and Paige Lane.

South Florida Aquatic Club Ends Successful Southern Zone South Sectional Championships With Highest Finish, More Time Standards

GAINESVILLE, July 14, 2018—South Florida Aquatic Club had its most successful Speedo Championship Series Southern Zone South Sectional Championships in team history at University of Florida’s O’Connell Center Pool.

On Sunday, the Sharks finished third among combined teams, third (682 points) among men’s teams and fifth (576 teams) among women’s teams in the four-day, 61-team meet. South Florida Aquatic Club was the highest Florida Gold Coast finisher. Host Gator Swim Club defended its titles.

Lance Lesage, 16, picked up his second Summer Junior National qualifying standard. On Saturday, he got his first junior national cut in the 100-meter backstroke in 58.60 and on Sunday he made his 200-meter backstroke cut with a fifth-place finish in a lifetime-best time of 2:06.42, shaving 2.77 seconds off his previous best of 2:09.19. He finished with 68 points in high point.

Mallory Schleicher, 15, earned her time standard in the 200-meter backstroke to qualify for the USA Swimming Futures Championships in 2:24.54, dropping 3.30 seconds. Schleicher finished with 65 points in high point.

Kathleen Golding, 18, won the 800-meter freestyle in a best time 8:49.37, dropping 18.78 seconds. She finished with 83 points in high point.

Other top SOFLO finishers were:

SOFLO’s 400-meter freestyle relay was second in 3:56.87 with Mary Smutny, Kathleen Golding, Paige Lane and Mallory Schleicher.

Mary Smutny, 18, was third in the 200-meter butterfly in 2:16.36. She finished with 80.5 points in high point.

Schleicher was also fifth in the 800-meter freestyle in a best time 9:08.45, dropping 4.92 off her previous best of 9:13.37.

Rafael Rodriguez, 17, was ninth in the 200-meter butterfly in a best time 2:06.05, dropping 1.20 seconds off his previous best of 2:07.25.

Molly Golding, 16, was 11th in the 200-meter breaststroke in 2:43.75. She finished 31 points in high point.

Dominic Bono, 16, dropped 13.74 seconds off his 1500-meter freestyle time in 16:38.08. His previous best was 16:51.80.

In addition to SOFLO, other top teams entered were host and defending champion Gator Swim Club, Bolles, Sarasota YMCA, Azura, Gulliver Swim Club, Club Seminole, Westminster Academy, Trinity Prep, Metro Aquatics, Swim Florida, Highlander and Hurricane Aquatics.

At last year’s event, SOFLO finished fifth (1,050 points) among combined teams behind host Gator Swim Club (3,007), Bolles (1,453), East Coast Aquatic Club (1,169) and Swim Florida (1,061) among 60 teams. SOFLO men finished fourth (481) and women (491) were fifth.

SOFLO Mixed Relay Wins; Rafael Rodriguez Drops Time; SOFLO Men Take Second On Day One Of Southern Zone South Sectional Championships

GAINESVILLE, July 11, 2018—South Florida Aquatic Club had a big opening night at the Speedo Championship Series Southern Zone South Sectional Championships Thursday at University of Florida’s O’Connell Center Pool.

SOFLO men’s team is second with 165 points and SOFLO women’s team is tied for sixth with 104 among a field of 29 teams. SOFLO has 23 swimmers competing in the meet.

SOFLO’s mixed 200-meter medley relay team won big in 1:54.15 ahead of St. Andrew’s in 1:56.32. The relay of Lance Lesage (27.20), Juan Pablo Pineda (30.11), Kathleen Golding (29.09) and Paige Lane (27.75) dropped 0.36 seconds off its entry time of 1:54.51.

SOFLO’s men’s 200-meter medley relay was second in 1:48.17, dropping 3.79 off its entry time of 1:51.96. The relay of Lance Lesage (27.01), Juan Pablo Pineda (30.44), Miguel Sierra (26.01) and Rafael Rodriguez (24.71).

SOFLO men also finished sixth in the 200-meter freestyle relay with Robert Wilson, Lance Lesage, Rafael Rodriguez and Miguel Sierra in 1:40.35.

SOFLO women also had eighth and 12th place relay finishes.

Rodriguez opened the meet with a best time in the 800-meter freestyle in 8:38.11, shaving 2.08 seconds off his previous best of 8:40.19. His opening split was 1:00.31 and closing split 1:03.51.

SOFLO Swimmers Dominate Day One Prelims Of SOFLO Holiday Classic; Paige Lane, Nicolas Rossi Post Impressive Time Drops

PEMBROKE PINES, November 30, 2018–South Florida Aquatic Club dominated opening night prelim action at the SOFLO Holiday Classic Friday at Academic Village Pool.

SOFLO swept the top three places in four individual events. The girls swept the 200-yard butterfly and 200-yard backstroke events. The boys swept the 50-yard freestyle and 200-yard backstroke.

In the girls’ 200-yard butterfly, Alia Atkinson was top finisher in prelims in 2:05.32 just edging SOFLO teammate Paige Lane, seeded fifth in 2:11.76 who was second in a best time 2:05.41 after dropping an impressive 6.35 seconds. Kathleen Golding was third in 2:07.60.

Atkinson, 29, fine tuning for the upcoming FINA World Short Course Championships, also was top finisher in the 100-yard breaststroke in 1:05.36.

Molly Golding was top finisher in the 200-yard backstroke in a best time 2:14.71, dropping 2.21 followed by Jena Legaspi in 2:20.05 and JennaMarie Brames in 2:20.79.

Robert Wilson was top finisher inthe 50-yard freestyle in 22.28 followed by teammates Rafael Rodriguez in 22.67 and Juan Pablo Pineda in a best time 22.78.

Lance Lesage was top finisher in the 200-yard backstroke in a best time 1:52.56, dropping 1.09 seconds. Nicolas Rossi was second in 2:06.28, also a best time, dropping an impressive 8.86 seconds and Leonardo Mateus was third in 2:07.72.

Several swimmers were coming off outstanding high school seasons.

The meet continues Saturday with two sessions, prelims at 8:30 a.m. and finals at 5 p.m.

Cypress Bay Defends Region 4-4A Titles; SOFLO Swimmers Come Up Big, Headed To States

BOCA RATON, November 5, 2018—Cypress Bay had no problem defending its girls and boys team titles for the fourth consecutive year at the Region 4-4A Swimming and Diving Championships.

The Lightning won the girls team title with 413 points. Cooper City was runnerup with 384 points and Coral Reef was third with 206.

The boys team won with 361.5 points. Miami Palmetto was second with 277 and Cooper City was third with 237.

South Florida Aquatic Club swimmers dominated the timed final meet at Boca Raton High School Aquatic Center.

Defending state champion Kathleen Golding of Cooper City headed the SOFLO contingent qualifying for her fourth and final state meet before heading to University of Florida next fall.

Golding won the 200-yard individual medley in 2:02.97, an All-American consideration time and 100-yard freestyle in 51.81. She is seeded second in the 200 IM and fifth in the 100-yard freestyle in 51.81.

Cooper City freshman Mallory Schleicher will make her state meet debut in the 200- and 500-yard freestyle events. She is seeded 16th in the 500 freestyle in 5:03.05 and 20th in the 200 freestyle. She won region titles in the 200 freestyle in 1:54.14 and 500 freestyle.

Everglades’ Sarah Acevedo will also make her state meet debut in the 500-yard freestyle, seeded 24th in 5:11.43. She was second at regions.

Cypress Bay sophomore Paige Lane also qualified in the 200-yard freestyle, seeded 24th at the state meet in 1:55.94 and also the 100-yard freestyle, seeded 24th in 53.60. Lane was runnerup in the 100- and 200-yard freestyles. Lane anchored Cypress Bay’s runner-up 400-yard freestyle relay.

Molly Golding of Cooper City qualified in the 100-yard breaststroke in 1:07.23 and is seeded 11th and 200 IM and is seeded 13th in the 100 breaststroke. She was second in the 100 breaststroke and third in the 200 IM in 2:09.21.

Jennifer Rodriguez of Hialeah Gardens is seeded fourth in the 100-yard breaststroke in 1:04.58. She also qualified in the 200 IM and is seeded 22nd in 2:10.44. She won the 100 breaststroke and was fourth in the 200 IM at regions.

Gaby Banks of Cypress Bay is seeded 11th in the 50-yard freestyle in 24.23. Cooper City’s Solana Capalbo is seeded 17th in the sprint event in 24.58. Banks won the 50-yard freestyle at regions. Capalbo was second in the 50 freestyle and third in the 100 freestyle in 53.62.

Cooper City won the girls 200-yard medley relay in 1:49.66 with Solana Capalbo, Molly Golding, Kathleen Golding and Kate Kaplan.

Cooper City also won the 400-yard freestyle relay in 3:35.79 with Mallory Schleicher, Molly Golding, Solana Capalbo and Kathleen Golding.

Cypress Bay won the 200-yard freestyle relay in 1:40.01 with Gaby Banks, Emily Lopez-Diaz, Jemma Kelly and Paige Lane.

Cypress Bay sophomore Philopatier Ibrahim will make his state debut after qualifying in the 200-yard freestyle, seeded 18th in 1:45.02 and 500-yard freestyle, seeded 23rd in 4:44.83. He was fourth in the 500 freestyle. He was also a member of the runner-up 200-yard freestyle relay team.

Robert Wilson of Cooper City is seeded 20th in the 100-yard freestyle in 48.48 and 22nd in the 50-yard freestyle in 22.25. Wilson won the region title in the 50 in 22.25 and was third in the 100 freestyle n 48.48.

Javier Roman of Cooper City is seeded 22nd in the 100-yard breaststroke in 1:00.69.

Cypress Bay won the boys 200-yard medley relay in 1:39.89 with Yesh Mandava, Samuel Manrique, Max Miller and Jack D’Avi.

Cooper City’s Tyler Flowers is the top-seeded 4A Broward diver at fourth with 478.95 points he totaled at regions. Hannah Egert of Western won the girls diving title with 359.25.

The State 4A meet is Saturday at Sailfish Splashpark Aquatic Athletics Center in Stuart. Prelims are 9 a.m. and finals 5:30 p.m.

Cypress Bay Sweeps Coral Springs, South Broward, Ready To Defend BCAA Titles

HOLLYWOOD, September 25, 2018—Defending champion Cypress Bay tuned up for Saturday’s Broward County Athletic Association Swimming and Diving Championships with one-sided victories over Coral Springs and South Broward Monday at the Bulldogs pool.

The Lightning girls team defeated Coral Springs, 82-12 and South Broward, 77-17. Host South Broward edged Coral Springs, 49-45.

Cypress Bay swept all three girls relays and won seven of eight individual events.

Among individual winners were sophomore Paige Lane in the 200-yard freestyle in 1:59.30, junior Jacqueline Lugo in the 100-yard butterfly in 1:04.36 and senior Daniela Kim in the 100-yard breaststroke in 1:08.24.

The boys’ team defeated South Broward, 67-25, and Coral Springs 72-18. South Broward defeated Coral Springs, 56-36.

Cypress Bay won the boys 200-yard and 400-yard freestyle relays.

Luis Bucaro won the 200-yard freestyle in 1:51.71 and Diego Machado won the 100-yard freestyle in 52.61.

South Broward’s Andy Rogatinsky won the 100-yard breaststroke in 1:01.53 and second in the 200-yard freestyle in 1:54.61.

Cypress Bay Wins Big Against Pembroke Pines Charter In Season Opener

WESTON, September 6, 2018—Cypress Bay took up where it left off last season winning its boys and girls season opener against Pembroke Pines Charter at YMCA Weston Family Center.

The BCAA champions had too much depth and talent for Pembroke Pines Charter to overcome.

The girls team captured every individual event and all three relays to win 189-89.

The boys team won 188-90, winning all three relays and six individual events.

SOFLO’s Paige Lane and Gaby Banks were double winners and Jacqueline Lugo won an individual event. Daniela Kim was also a double winner.

Lane, a sophomore, won the 200-yard freestyle in 1:59.35 and 500-yard freestyle in 5:23.69. She was also a member of the winning 200- and 400-yard freestyle relays and finished with 16 points.

Banks, a junior, won the 50-yard freestyle in 24.10 and 100-yard freestyle in 54.09 and also was a member of two winning relays. She also finished with 16 points.

Lugo, a junior, won the 100-yard butterfly in 1:03.64 and was a member of two winning relays.

Kim won the 200-yard individual medley in 2:17.45 and 100-yard breaststroke in 1:10.37. She was also on two winning relays and finished with 16 points.

Cypress Bay had six different swimmers win individual events including top swimmer Diego Machado, winner of the 100-yard freestyle in 51.69.

Pembroke Pines Charter junior Rafael Rodriguez was the lone bright spot for the Jaguars winning the 100-yard butterfly in 52.63 and 500-yard freestyle in 4:48.82. He finished with 16 points.

Cypress Bay’s first meet of the season against Cooper City last week was rained out and has yet to be rescheduled.

Cypress Bay will host McArthur and Piper on Sept. 12 at 7 p.m. at the YMCA. Pines Charter will host Douglas and Stranahan, also at 7 p.m., at Academic Village Pool on the Charter campus.
