TYR APRIL BOY SWIMMER OF THE MONTH: Ryan Harries

By Sharon Robb
PEMBROKE PINES, May 19, 2021—Three years ago Ryan Harries joined South Florida Aquatic Club and got serious about swimming.

Now, three years later he is beginning to see his hard work and dedication to the sport pay off in training and competitions.

“I like to work hard to become a better swimmer,” said Harries, 12, a sixth grader at Montessori Academy.

“I like it a lot at SOFLO,” Harries said. “My teammates push me to go faster which makes me a better swimmer. I like the team because they’re nice friends and kind. We share the same goals. I like Coach Rose. She’s nice. She can be tough but she helps me get better.”

Harries trains with Bronze A Group coached by head age group coach Rose Lockie.

“He is a hard worker,” Lockie said. “He gives his best all the time. He gives a 100 percent effort. He will ask what he can do to make his strokes better so he’s constantly trying to become better. He asks questions, he just doesn’t show up and swim. He is easy to coach. He really does love to swim.”

Harries had a great month of swimming. He tied TYR March Swimmer of the Month Juan Vallmitjana for most mileage (8,000) for 11-12 year olds in the SoFlo500 fundraiser at Academic Village Pool.

Harries also had a successful open water debut at the Florida Gold Coast Open Water Championship in Pompano Beach and qualified for his first FGC open water zones team.

Harries will represent the Florida Gold Coast and SOFLO at the June 5-6 Southern Zone Open Water Championship at Chester Frost Park in Hixson, Tenn.

“He is very excited about it,” Lockie said. “It should be a great experience for him. I hope he really enjoys it.”

Said Harries, “I was pretty happy with the open water swim at the beach. It’s the biggest race I’ve been happiest with so far. It was my first open water. I liked swimming in the ocean but the waves were big and that made it hard. I would like to do more open water swims. I’m training for Tennessee now and long course JOs.”

Before Harries started swimming competitively, he competed in T-ball, baseball and basketball and also played guitar. He is now solely focused on swimming.

“I really like the sport. It’s fun to drop time, go to meets and talk to your friends,” said Harries, whose favorite stroke is breaststroke. “I like the water.”

During the COVID-19 pandemic, Harries has been doing on-line classes at home. Swimming has helped him become more disciplined with his time.

“It definitely helps me with time management and to have a good schedule,” Harries said. “Swimming takes up a lot of my time. I’m glad I stayed with it.”

Each TYR Swimmer of the Month receives a free TYR backpack.

SOFLO sponsor TYR is a USA manufacturer of recreational and competitive swimwear, caps, goggles, triathlon gear and accessories and one of the nation’s top companies.

TYR, created by athletes, is named for the Norse god of warriors in Germanic mythology. Among its male-sponsored athletes are Ryan Lochte, Michael Andrew, Matt Grevers, Tom Shields, Maxime Rooney and Jacob Pebley.

Bronze, Silver, Meteorites and Asteroids swimmers will get another chance to race in a controlled atmosphere at Academic Village Pool.

After more than four months of not racing, South Florida Aquatic Club swimmers are not only training well but getting in some much-needed racing and fun competition in a unique format to gauge training and fitness levels.
