Bolles Sweeps FHSAA State 1A Titles, Makes History; Quintero Swims Best Times

By Sharon Robb

STUART, November 8, 2017—Jacksonville Bolles made a little more history Saturday night at the FHSAA State 1A Swimming and Diving Championships at Sailfish Splashpark Aquatic Center.

Bolles won a national record 30th consecutive boys team title surpassing the national record of 29 held by Punahou of Hawaii (from 1958 to 1986). The girls won their 27th state title without winning an event.

Bolles boys won by more than 100 points with 350. The girls won with 333.5 points. Pine Crest was the top Broward finisher, placing second among girls with 288 and fourth among boys teams with 187 points.

Trinity Prep also made history. Trinity Prep became the first 1A team other than Bolles to win both the boys 200- and 400-yard freestyle relays. Bolles had won the 400 relay 29 years in a row. Trinity Prep edged Bolles, 3:03.03-3:04.10. It was also only the third time since 1990 Bolles did not win the 200 relay.

“It was huge, very historic,” Trinity Prep coach Rocco Aceto told the Orlando Sentinel. “My phone lit up like a Christmas tree with coaches calling from all over the country.”

Ariel Spektor led Bolles with two individual wins in the 200-yard individual medley in 1:47.25 and 100-yard butterfly in 48.20. He also led the winning 200-yard medley relay.

Despite Bolles dominance among teams, there were several outstanding swims by Broward County athletes.

Westminster Academy senior Jessica Nava defended her 100-yard butterfly title with a state record performance in 53.39, an automatic All-American time. She broke her own record of 53.46 set last year. She also won the 100-yard backstroke in 55.10.

Pine Crest sophomore Andrea Santander won the 200-yard freestyle in an automatic All-American time of 1:47.02. She was also second in the 100-yard freestyle in 49.99.

Pine Crest won the 400-yard freestyle relay in an automatic All-American time of 3:27.85 with Santander, Annabella Lyn, Marissa Brannan and Alexandra Meszaros.

NSU University School senior Patrick Groters ended his high school career in style winning the 100-yard backstroke in 50.23. He was second in the 200-yard individual medley in 1:49.02. Longtime teammate Daniel Jacobs, also a senior, was second in the 500-yard freestyle in 4:28.38 and third in the 200-yard freestyle in 1:39.37.

Pine Crest senior Nico Ferrara was third in the 100-yard freestyle in 45.60 and fourth in the 50-yard freestyle in 20.91.

South Florida Aquatic Club’s Sam Quintero, at age 12 one of the youngest swimmers in the field, swam lifetime-bests in two events for Sagemont. South Florida Aquatic Club Wins Combined, Boys Team Titles At FGC Senior Championships; Five-Peats JOs, Seniors In Same Season

By Sharon Robb

March 26, 2017—-The winning tradition continues at South Florida Aquatic Club.

With a combination of depth, talent and confidence, SOFLO swimmers captured the combined and boys’ team titles Sunday night at the Florida Gold Coast Senior Championships.

SOFLO won the combined team title with a 145-point cushion with 2,748 points. Gulliver Swim Club was second with 2,571 and Pine Crest Swimming was third with 2,122 points.

In the friendly confines of their home Academic Village Swimming Pool, SOFLO swimmers added another page to its history books.

With 57 talented swimmers, SOFLO got its’ five-peat. After winning the FGC Junior Olympics for the seventh consecutive year and eighth overall earlier this month, the team captured both Seniors and JO titles in the same season for the fifth time in the team’s 17 years of existence.

“For us to be able to pull off the double of winning JOs and Seniors, that’s just crazy,” SOFLO coach Chris Anderson said after getting thrown into the pool during the post-meet celebration. “They found a way to win.”

Even more impressive is SOFLO accomplished the feat with no pro swimmers group.

“Our swimmers feel comfortable in our own pool,” Anderson said. “The fact we had a group that didn’t consist of pros motivated them even more. It seems more satisfying in a way to do it with our kids that have been here. I can appreciate it more for us.”

After several seconds and thirds, Kelley Heron, 17, won her first high point award since age 10 with 159 points, ahead of Jessica Nava of Pine Crest Swim Team with 149 and SOFLO teammate Jessica Rodriguez with 142.

Kathleen Golding, 16, won the 15-16 high point award with 203 points, edging out Mary Smutny, 16, of AquaKids Sharks with 200.

SOFLO had three boys in the Top 10 15-16 high point. Samuel Quintero, 16, was third with 130 points; Rafael Rodriguez, 15, was fourth with 128 points and Luke Lezotte, 16, who had a huge breakthrough meet, was tenth with 97 points.

SOFLO had two boys in the Top 10 open high point. Ervin Marin, 17, was fifth with 124 points and Ricardo Roche, 16, tied for sixth with 115 points.

Jennifer Rodriguez made her first-ever cut for the Futures Championships.

“We got some high quality swims from kids that have been loyal to our program for four or five years,” Anderson said. “It is a very satisfying accomplishment do it with the kids that we have.”

SOFLO girls opened with a win in the 200-yard medley relay in 1:42.97 with Kelley Heron, Alia Atkinson, Catalina Mendieta and Kathleen Golding.

Among other Top 3 finishers were:

Golding, first, 50-yard butterfly, 24.98, one of five SOFLO swimmers in the finals; first in the 200-yard individual medley in 2:00.36; and second, 50-yard freestyle, 23.23.

Atkinson, after a long layoff, first in the 50-yard butterfly in 24.51.

Ricardo Roche won the 1,650-yard freestyle in 15:44.8

Heron, second, 100-yard backstroke, 57.95.

“I am definitely enjoying this,” Anderson said. “I am very satisfied where our staff and team is and progress and maturity of our team. We have not only cultivated a culture but we are growing it as well. We are consistently growing athletes and that’s a really good feeling to have.”

Jennifer Martin, 36, a sergeant with the Pembroke Pines Police Department training for the Aug. 6-16 World Police & Fire Games in Los Angeles, got in some great racing against swimmers half her age.

Martin anchored SOFLO’s seventh place 200-yard medley relay that finished in 1:50.39; was 12th in the 50-yard butterfly in 27.79; and 15th

in the 50-yard freestyle in 25.24.

SOFLO hosted the seniors meet for the fifth time and will again host next year.

“I felt the effort everywhere from the coaches and officials to the volunteers and parents,” Anderson said. “We had some good input from the other coaches and a lot of really positive feedback. I can’t thank our officials and volunteers enough. We not only ran an efficient meet, but it was a first-class meet as well.”

Pereira, Heron, Golding, Roche, Quintero Lead SOFLO At IMR-IMX Challenge

By Sharon Robb

October 1, 2016—Mother Nature was on her best behavior as South Florida Aquatic Club swimmers participated on the first day of racing at the SOFLO IMR-IMX Challenge at Academic Village Pool.

SOFLO captured five individual races and turned in sixty best times on the opening day of competition in two sessions after Friday night’s 1,000-yard freestyle events were cancelled because of lightning.

Alessandro Pereira, 10, won the 200-yard freestyle in 2:16.92, dropping 11.49 seconds off his previous best. Pereira also swam a career-best time in the 200-yard individual medley in 2:33.03, shaving 9.42 seconds off his previous best.

Pereira led a SOFLO sweep in the boys’ 200-yard freestyle, all three best times. Javier Colmenares, 12, was second in 2:21.96 and Lucas Porven, 10, was third in 2:25.06.

SOFLO girls dominated the second session.

Kathleen Golding, 15, won two events. She won the 200-yard breaststroke in a best time 2:20.31, dropping 1.17 seconds. She also won the 400-yard individual medley n 4:26.05. She was second in the 200-yard backstroke in a best time 2:08.27, dropping 1.90 seconds.

Kelley Heron, 17, won the 200-yard backstroke in 2:07.69. She was also third in the 200-yard breaststroke in a best time 2:28.26, dropping 0.79 seconds and third in the 400-yard individual medley in 4:46.18.

Ricardo Roche, 16, won the 200-yard backstroke in 1:55.83.

Samuel Quintero, 16, won the 400-yard individual medley in a best time 4:30.51, dropping 8.78 seconds.

Nearly 500 swimmers and sixteen teams are competing in one of the biggest Florida Gold Coast meets of the fall.

The meet concludes on Sunday with two sessions at 8:30 a.m. and noon.

The USA Swimming-sanctioned meet is a fun, motivational meet to help young swimmers reach the next level in their swimming careers.

The IMR (Ready) Challenge allows swimmers to see how they compare to other swimmers around the nation in their age group. Swimmers must compete in all the events required for their age group to establish a score.

Once a swimmer competes in each IM Ready event at least once in an official meet, swimmers and parents can check their rankings on USA Swimming’s website.

The IMX (Xtreme) Challenge is the next step-up from the IMR competition. It includes a series of five or six events. Once swimmers complete the IMX program they can also see where their score ranks nationally, among their local LSC and own swim club.
