Rodriguez Wins Two More To Lead SOFLO On Final Day Of YCF Winter Classic By Sharon Robb


December 11, 2016—Rafael Rodriguez of South Florida Aquatic Club had the meet of his life at the YCF Winter Classic at the Orlando YMCA.

On the third and final day of competition,. Rodriguez, 14, won the 1,650-yard freestyle in 16:23.18 and 200-yard butterfly in a best tie 1:57.80. It was the first time he broke 2 minutes in the event. His previous best was 2:00.41.

Rodriguez won seven events over three days and scored 63 points for his Herculean effort.

Other SOFLO individual winners were:

Molly Golding, 13, won the 200-yard breaststroke in a best time 2:24.75. Golding swam back-to-back best times. In prelims she swam 2:26.00 to lower her previous best of 2:28.38.

Santiago Rivera, 19, won the 200-yard breaststroke in 2:05.23.

It was one of SOFLO’s most successful meets of the year and perfect way to end the year for swimmes, coaches and parents.

The meet, featuring 32 teams, is an end-of-calendar year prelims and finals format meet. It was created as a replacement for the Gator meet which is not being held this year because of construction at the O’Connell Center at University of Florida.

SOFLO’s Megan Romano Wins Backstroke At All-Florida Sr. Circuit Meet

May 14, 2016—With the U.S. Olympic Trials six weeks away, Megan Romano is in the midst of one of her final tune-ups at the All-Florida Senior Circuit Meet at Florida Gulf Coast University Aquatics Center.

On Saturday, Romano, 25, a former world champion, won the 100-meter backstroke in 1:02.16, after going 1:02.09 in morning prelims to earn the top seed.

Romano had the fastest seed times in the 50-meter freestyle in 26.28 and 400-meter freestyle in 4:22.75 in prelims before scratching from finals.

The U.S. Olympic hopeful is preparing for the June 26-July 3 Olympic trials in Omaha, Neb. She has been training with SOFLO’s ProFlo group since early January with remarkable progress.

SOFLO teammate Catalina Mendieta, 26, was fifth in the 100-meter backstroke in a best time 1:06.50, improving her previous best time of 1:06.97.

SOFLO’s Santiago Rivera, 19, was fourth in the 200-meter breaststroke in 2:31.43, shaving 4.63 seconds off his previous lifetime best time of 2:36.06. He qualified third in prelims in 2:31.53.

The three-day meet concludes Sunday with prelims at 9 a.m. and finals at 6 p.m.

SOFLO’s Alvarez, Rivera, Kopecki, Pelaez Shine On Opening Day Of Senior Circuit Meet

May 13, 2016—Monica Alvarez, Santiago Rivera and C.J. Kopecki were top South Florida Aquatic Club finishers Friday night in the All-Florida Senior Circuit Meet at Florida Gulf Coast University Aquatics Center in Fort Myers.

Alvarez, 27, was third in the 100-meter breaststroke in 1:14.31 followed by SOFLO teammate Ksen Golovkina, 26, fourth in 1:14.71.

Rivera, 19, was fourth in the 100-meter breaststroke in a best time 1:07.94. He swam back-to-back bests, 1:10.57 in prelims. He dropped 4.99 seconds. His previous time was 1:12.93.

C.J. Kopecki, 16, was fourth in the 400-meter individual medley in 5:02.62.

Catalina Mendieta, 26, was seventh in the 100-meter butterfly in 1:03.97, just off her seed time of 1:03.89.

In the 200-meter freestyle, Emiliana Pelaez, 17, swam back-to-back best times. She swam 2:11.28 in finals to finish 13th. She had swum 2:14.73, also a best time in prelims. Her previous best was 2:14.88.

The three-day meet is also serving as an Olympic Trials qualifier. The meet continues Saturday with prelims at 9 a.m. and finals at 6 p.m.
