SOFLO Swimmers More Than Ready For This Weekend’s State, Region Meets

PEMBROKE PINES, November 7, 2019—South Florida Aquatic Club will have a record 65 swimmers competing in the State 2A and State 1A and Region 4-4A and Region 4-3A FHSAA Swimming and Diving Championships.

The hard work and dedication paid off for SOFLO swimmers and coaches.

After a full season of high school swimming meets, ninety-five percent of SOFLO swimmers who swim on high school teams qualified for either the district, region or state meets.

At Friday’s State 2A meet, SOFLO swimmers competing are American Heritage Plantation’s Sebastian Lares, 200-yard individual medley and 100-yard backstroke; and Nicolas Rossi, 200- and 500-yard freestyles and relays; Juan Camilo Rivero of Monsignor Pace will compete in the 100-yard butterfly; and Juan Pablo Pineda of Mater Lakes will compete in the 50-yard freestyle, 100-yard breaststroke and relays.

In the State 1A meet on Saturday, Sagemont’s Sara Quintero will swim the 200-yard individual medley and 100-yard butterfly; eighth grader Anastasia Lutz of NSU University School, 500-yard freestyle and South Florida Heat’s Hartley Pitters-Hinds will swim the 100-yard freestyle and relays; Cutler Bay’s Elena Dinehart, 200-yard freestyle, 100-yard backstroke and relays; Olivia Dinehart, 200-yard individual medley, 100-yard breaststroke and relays; Madeline Smutny, 100-yard butterfly, 500-yard freestyle and relays; Miguel Sierra, 100-yard butterfly, 100-yard backstroke and relays; Lucy Smutny, 500-yard freestyle and 100-yard backstroke and relays alternate; and Sophia Grubbs, 100-yard breaststroke.

At the Region 4-3A meet, among dozens of the qualified SOFLO swimmers are Lance Lesage of St. Thomas Aquinas, Rafael Rodriguez, Zackary Harris and Victoria Torres of Pembroke Pines Charter; and Sydney Sever of Terra Institute.

At the Region 4-4A meet, leading SOFLO’s contingent are Molly Golding, Sally Golding, Robert Wilson and Mallory Schleicher; Sarah Acevedo and Juan Colmenares of Everglades; Philopatier Ibrahim, Gaby Banks, Paige Lane and Jacqueline Lugo of Cypress Bay; John Paul Handal of West Broward; Maddy Schain, 200-yard freestyle and 100-yard backstroke; Tristan Wilson, 200-yard freestyle and 100-yard backstroke; Maia Vatinelle, 200-yard individual medley and 500-yard freestyle; Dominic Bono, 200-yard individual medley and 500-yard freestyle; Garrett Oliver, 200-yard individual medley and 100-yard breaststroke; Jose Hermida, 100-yard butterfly and 100-yard breaststroke; and Ana-Luisa Frable, 100-yard freestyle.

SOFLO’s Max Asnis, Sara Quintero, Sam Quintero Shine; Pine Crest Sweeps Team Titles

October 27, 2016—-Pine Crest dominated the District 11-1A Swimming and Diving Championships Thursday at Nova Southeastern Aquatic Center.

Pine Crest girls team started its journey to the state meet, winning the girls crown with 613 points. South Florida Heat was runner-up with 354.50.

The Panthers, led by 2016 U.S. Olympic trials qualifier and Southern Cal-commit Marta Ciesla, won two relays and three individual events. Ciesla won the 50-yard freestyle in 23.71 and 100-yard freestyle in 51.63 and swam two relays.

Pine Crest’s boys team won with 423 points. The Panthers swept all three relays and won two individual events by Nico Ferrera in the 500- and 100-yard freestyles.

Patrick Groters and Daniel Jacobs, who represent Aruba internationally, were double winners for University School that finished runner-up.

SOFLO’s Max Asnis of University School and Sagemont’s Sara and Samuel Quintero finished among the top nine.

Asnis was second in the 200-yard freestyle in 1:48.33 and fourth in the 500-yard freestyle in 4:50.93.

Samuel Quintero was sixth in the 200-yard individual medley in 2:06.18 and fourth in the 100-yard breaststroke in 1:02.84.

Sara Quintero was ninth in the 200-yard freestyle in a best time 2:07.85. She dropped 0.24 off her previous best. Quintero was also eighth in the 500-yard freestyle in 5:31.63.

Nine teams competed to qualify swimmers for the Nov. 4 Region 4-1A meet at Nova Southeastern Aquatic Center.

SOFLO’s Quintero, Lares Double Winners In Session One Of December Sprint Championships

December 12, 2015—Sara Quintero and Sebastian Lares of South Florida Aquatic Club each won two events in the opening session of the December Sprint Championships Saturday at Academic Village Pool in Pembroke Pines.

Quintero, 12, won the 100-yard butterfly in a best time 1:09.57, dropping .03 off her previous best.

Quintero also won the 100-yard individual medley in 1:12.17, also a best time, shaving 1.03 seconds off her previous best.

Other individual SOFLO girls winners were Jena Legaspi, Sarah Acevedo, Abby Oyetunji and Kelley Heron.

Lares, 11, won the 100-yard butterfly in 1:05.42 and 100-yard individual medle in 1:06.71.

Other individual SOFLO boys winners were Marcos Vazquez, Kevin Porto, Michael Arias, Ryan Capote, Ervin Marin and Sam Asnis.

Teams entered in the two-session meet were Bob Karl Swim Club, Bone Island Swim Club, Devilrays Swim Club, Indian River Aquatics, Metro Aquatics, YSF of South Florida and host SOFLO.

It was the final Florida Gold Coast meet of the year for SOFLO.

SOFLO Finishes On Winning Note On Final Day Of Area 3 Long Course Championships At SOFLO

July 12, 2015—South Florida Aquatic Club swimmers look ready, willing and able for the championship season.

The host team dominated the third and final day of the Florida Gold Coast Area 3 Long Course Developmental Championships Sunday at Academic Village Pool in Pembroke Pines.

Sara Quintero, 11, led the girls’ team with two individual wins and relay victory. Quintero won the 11-12 200-meter breaststroke in 3:22.51 and 200-meter backstroke in 2:52.91. She was also a member of the winning 200-meter medley relay with teammates Michelle Ordonez, Katrina Del Vecchio and Sarah Acevedo.

Alex Golding, 11, was a triple winner for the boys’ team. Golding won the 100-meter freestyle in 1:10.52, 50-meter backstroke in 38.50 and 50-meter breaststroke in 43.29.

Other individual winners were:

The three-day meet featured 22 teams including Miami Swimming, Gulliver Swimming, Blue Marlins of Hialeah Gardens, Metro Aquatics and AquaKids Sharks. SOFLO and the Comets Booster Club took over meet host duties when another FGC team was unable to host the meet.

Next up for swimmers with time standard cuts will be the July 17-19 FGC Senior Championships at Coral Springs and July 24-26 FGC Junior Olympics at Plantation.

SOFLO Swimmers Shine On Final Day Of Mike Horgan Fall Invitational Meet

October 19, 2014—South Florida Aquatic Club swimmers ended on a good note with several lifetime-best times, JO cuts and wins at the fourth annual Mike Horgan Fall Invitational Meet Sunday at the Lake Lytal Family Aquatic Center in West Palm Beach.

The meet was a good gauge for swimmers and coaches in the middle of short course training. The field featured most of the top teams in the Florida Gold Coast.

On the final day, SOFLO girls turned in nineteen best times and SOFLO boys posted eighteen best times.

Rafael Rodriguez dominated the boys competition. Rodriguez won the 100-yard freestyle in a best time 51.18; 50-yard backstroke in a best time 27.36; 200-yard backstroke in 2:03.35; and 100-yard butterfly in a best time 56.67

Leonardo Mateus won the 200-yard individual medley in 2:16.31 and 1,650-yard freestyle in 17:53.29.

Sara Quintero won the 200-yard individual medley in a best time2:33.65. She also won the 100-yard butterfly in 1:09.60, another best time.

Isabella Di Salvo won the 100-yard butterfly in a best time 1:04.62. She was also second in the 50-yard backstroke in a best time 31.25.

The Florida Gold Coast Top 16 Fall Invitational is named in honor of one of the most beloved and well-respected coaches in the Florida Gold Coast. Horgan, Lake Lytal’s head developmental coach, died of a heart attack at age 50 in August, 2011.

SOFLO’s Rafael Rodriguez Dominates Day Two Of Mike Horgan Fall Invitational Meet

October 18, 2014—Rafael Rodriguez and his South Florida Aquatic club teammates had another good day at the fourth annual Mike Horgan Fall Invitational Meet Saturday at the Lake Lytal Family Aquatic Center in West Palm Beach.

Rodriguez, 12, led the team with four victories.

He won the 200-yard individual medley in a best time 57.86; 50-yard freestyle in 23.90, also a best time; 50-yard butterfly in a best time 25.78 and 100-yard backstroke in 58.42.

Other SOFLO winners were:

Sara Quintero, 100-yard backstroke in a best time 1:13.53 followed by 8-year-old teammate Erika Pelaez in 1:13.87.

Leonardo Mateus, 200-yard freestyle, 1:58.10, best time; 200-yard butterfly, 2:17.31, best time.

Isabella Di Salvo had two seconds and one third. She was third in the 50-yard butterfly in 29.47 and second in the 200-yard butterfly in a best time 2:29.22 and third in the 100-yard backstroke in a best time 1:06.25.

The three-day meet concludes on Sunday with two sessions at 8:30 and 11:30 a.m.

SOFLO Swimmers Start Strong At Mike Horgan Fall Invitational Meet At Lake Lytal

October 17, 2014—South Florida Aquatic Club swimmers got off to a strong start Friday night at the fourth annual Mike Horgan Fall Invitational Meet at the Lake Lytal Family Aquatic Center in West Palm Beach.

Sara Quintero, 10, led the SOFLO girls winning the 500-yard freestyle breaking the 6-minute barrier in a best time 5:54.08, shaving 8.17 minutes off her previous best of 6:02.25.

Quintero was also ninth in the 400-yard individual medley in a best time 5:26.38.

SOFLO teammate Erika Pelaez, 8, was third in the 500-yard freestyle in 6:07.73, dropping 23.27 minutes off her previous best time.

Rafael Rodriguez and Leonardo Mateus led the SOFLO boys.

Rodriguez, 12, enjoying his best age group short course season, won the 500-yard freestyle in a best time 4:51.15, dropping 2.02 minutes off his previous best.

Mateus, 12, won the 400-yard individual medley in a best time 4:34.59, dropping 14.04 minutes.

The Florida Gold Coast Top 16 Fall Invitational is named in honor of one of the most beloved and well-respected coaches in the Florida Gold Coast. Horgan, Lake Lytal’s head developmental coach, died of a heart attack at age 50 in August, 2011.
