SOFLO’s Atkinson, Dinehart, Mora, Sierra, Relays Come Up Big; SOFLO Extends Lead On Day Three Of FGC Senior Championships

By Sharon Robb
PEMBROKE PINES, March 20, 2021–Defending champion South Florida Aquatic Club continued to steamroll through the Florida Gold Coast Senior Championships Saturday at Academic Village Pool.

Led by two relay and four individual victories, SOFLO leads the combined team standings with 1,434.5 points and has all but clinched its seventh team title against a field of 25 teams.

SOFLO has more than doubled the points of second place Gulliver Swim Club with 502.5 and Pine Crest Swimming with 473.

SOFLO women’s team leads the 20-team women’s field with 698.5 points followed by Pine Crest Swimming with 396 and Midtown Weston Aquatics with 335.

SOFLO men’s team has pulled away from the field of 21 teams with 736 points. Gulliver is second with 267 and Metro Aquatics is third with 231.

“We had a lot of kids really step it up in the 200 freestyle, which was really nice,” SOFLO head coach Chris Anderson said. “And, our breaststrokers, to have four in the finals for men and to back it up with four in finals for the butterfly, that’s pretty solid.”

SOFLO had another outstanding night in the championship finals.

Olivia Dinehart, 16, won the 200-yard breaststroke in a best time 2:13.50, shaving 1.69 seconds off her previous best of 2:15.19.

Juan Mora, 16, broke 2 minutes for the first time to win the 200-meter breaststroke in a best time 1:59.88, dropping 2.49 seconds off his previous best of 2:02.37. He just missed the 15-16 Florida Gold Coast record of 1:59.22. Anderson said “that was a spectacular swim for him, that was probably the swim of the night.”

Four-time Jamaican Olympian Alia Atkinson, 32, won the 100-yard butterfly in a best time and pool record 52.01, dropping an impressive 6.44 seconds off her previous best of 58.45. Atkinson broke her own pool record of 52.62 set in 2015.

Miguel Sierra, 17, won the 100-yard butterfly in 48.73, just missing the 2018 pool record of 48.53 set by SOFLO teammate Miguel Cancel.

SOFLO got off to a good start in morning prelims, sweeping the 200-yard medley relays.

The women finished one-three in the relay. The “A” relay of Elena Dinehart, Alia Atkinson, Paige Lane and Olivia Dinehart won in 1:46.71. The “B” relay of Lucy Smutny, Sophia Grubbs, Maddie Smutny and Mallory Schleicher finished in 1:50.25.

The men’s “A” relay of Andres Lares, Juan Mora, Miguel Sierra and Michael Arias won in 1:32.94. The “B” relay of Juan Colmenares, Javier Roman, Matthew Tarafa and Agustin Rodriguez was eighth in 1:39.12.

“The kids bounced back from yesterday,” Anderson said. “Our 200 freestyle relays were pretty solid yesterday but today to come back in the medley and have our women go one-three and our men go one-eight, that’s a huge feat.

“They really stepped up. We are a little better in the medley because we specialize in all different areas in our club. It truly, truly really did help to do that and to do it with Julio today I thought it showed a lot of depth.”

Honduran Olympic hopeful Julio Horrego scratched Saturday’s events because of illness.

Other top four SOFLO finishers were:

Mallory Schleicher, 17, 200-yard freestyle, fourth 1:50.85, time drop 1.22.

Andres Lares, 21, 200-yard freestyle, fourth, 1:40.28, time drop 4.33.

Maddie Smutny, 15, 100-yard butterfly, third, 55.91, time drop 0.21.

Other winners were:

UCLA-commit Paige MacEachern, 18, Pine Crest Swimming, 200-yard freestyle in a thrilling race against Anna Auld of East Coast Aquaticss, 1:50.01-1:50.12.

Defending champion South Florida Aquatic Club and Comets Booster Club are hosting the well-organized four-day meet.

In a perfectly-choreographed and synchronized pre-final National Anthem ceremony coordinated by Coach George Mersinger, SOFLO’s Dippers swam the length of the short-course lane with small flags attached to their kick boards. The final swimmer swam with a pair of goggles in honor of swimmer Nicholas Dworet, killed in the Feb. 14, 2018 Marjory Douglas High School mass shooting.

SOFLO has 63 swimmers, ages 15-and-over, (39 male and 24 female) in 320 individual events and four relays.

SOFLO Has Slim Lead Headed Into Final Day Of FGC Senior Championships; Golding, Rodriguez Top Finishers On Day Two

By Sharon Robb

PEMBROKE PINES, March 24, 2018—The battle for the combined team title is going down to the wire at the Florida Gold Coast Senior Championships.

Defending champion and meet host South Florida Aquatic Club leads Metro Aquatics by 8.5 points going into the third and final day of competition at Academic Village Pool.

SOFLO, led by Kathleen Golding and Rafael Rodriguez for the second consecutive day, leads by only 8.5 points. SOFLO has 1,654 points and Metro Aquatics is second with 1,646. East Coast Aquatic Club is third with 1,554.

It is expected to be one of the closest finishes in meet history. SOFLO is attempting to win both Seniors and Junior Olympic titles in the same short course season for the sixth time in the team’s 18-year history.

“The kids swam really well,” said SOFLO head coach Chris Anderson after Saturday’s finals. “We are shaving off a lot of best times in the groups. The Gold Group did a really nice job and senior training group is making consos and finals and scoring points. Sunday should be one of our stronger days with the medley relays.

“The team is really coming together,” Anderson said. “They are doing a good job closing out races and when necessary winning some races. Teams are are definitely gunning for us.

“We need to come together as a team. I told them they have to have a little bit more grit and get a little tougher. They need to get comfortable feeling slightly uncomfortable going fast. It’s going to be a matter of pride. I think it will come down to the men’s and women’s B relays.”

Golding won the 100-yard butterfly in a best time 53.90 and was third in the 50-yard backstroke in a best time 26.23. Golding has 137 points.

Golding was also a member of SOFLO’s third place 800-yard freestyle relay that finished in 7:45.61. Other relay members were Paige Lane, Kelley Heron and Katrina Del Vecchio.

Lane was also third in the 200-yard freestyle in a best time 1:53.38 and fourth in the 100-yard butterfly in 58.56.

Rodriguez won the 400-yard individual medley in a best time 4:01.32 and was second in the 200-yard freestyle in a best time in 1:42.25. Leonardo Mateus was third in the 400 IM in a best time 4:13.43.

Rodriguez was also a member of SOFLO’s runner-up 800-yard freestyle relay that finished in 7:04.39. Other relay members were Heath Brames, Ricardo Roche and CJ Kopecki.
