Olivia Dinehart, Juan Vallmitjana Lead SOFLO In Final Session Of SOFLO Distance IMX/IMR TYR Challenge

PEMBROKE PINES, October 2, 2022–South Florida Aquatic Club finished up a solid weekend of racing at Session Five of the SOFLO Distance IMX/IMR TYR Challenge Sunday at Academic Village Pool.

Olivia Dinehart, 17, and Juan Vallmitjana, 13, were double winners.

Dinehart won the 100-yard individual medley in 1:00.55 and 500-yard freestyle in 5:16.56. She finished with three firsts, one third and one sixth place.

Vallmitjana won the 200-yard individual medley in a best time 2:04.93, dropping 3.92 seconds off his previous best, and 500-yard freestyle in 4:46.19. He was also second in the 200-yard butterfly in a best time 2:04.18, dropping 5.79. He finished with three wins, three seconds and one third place.

Other SOFLO winners were:
Elena Dinehart, 17, 200-yard butterfly, 2:10.17.
Maddie Smutny, 17, 500-yard freestyle, 5:06.16.
Julio Horrego, 23, 100-yard individual medley, 49.93.
Ricardo Roche, 22, 500-yard freestyle, 4:49.43.

In one of the more exciting races, Roche outlasted teammate Manuel Melendez in the 500-yard freestyle, 4:49.43-4:50.93.

Triple Winner Toma Petkov Leads SOFLO At Session Four Of SOFLO Distance IMX/IMR TYR Challenge

PEMBROKE PINES, October 2, 2022–Based on Session Four of the SOFLO Distance IMX/IMR TYR Challenge Sunday at Academic Village Pool, the future looks bright for South Florida Aquatic Club’s young up-and-coming swimmers.

Triple winner Toma Petkov, 10, and double winner Christie Ann Lumsden, 10, led SOFLO on the third and final day of competition.

Petkov won the 50-yard backstroke in 39.04; 50-yard breaststroke in 41.75 and 50-yard butterfly in a best time 35.45, dropping 0.96 off his previous best. Petkov finished with five wins and three best times.

Lumsden won the 100-yard backstroke in a best time 1:18.50, dropping 0.10 and 100-yard breaststroke in 1:20.26. She was also third in the 100-yard butterfly in 1:25.99. Lumsden finished with four wins and one third place.

PEMBROKE PINES, October 1, 2022–South Florida Aquatic Club swimmers finished out the day on a successful note at Session Three of the SOFLO Distance IMX/IMR TYR Challenge Saturday at Academic Village Pool.

Elena Dinehart, 17, and Julio Horrego, 23, were double winners.

Dinehart won the 15-and-over 200-yard backstroke in 2:07.67 and 400-yard individual medley in 4:40.60.

Horrego, a 2020 Honduran Olympian, won the 200-yard breaststroke in 1:58.54 and 100-yard freestyle in 45.68.

Other SOFLO winners were:
Juan Vallmitjana, 13, in the 400-yard individual medley in a best time 4:19.31, dropping 9.56 seconds off his previous best. He was also second in the 200-yard backstroke in a best time 2:04.84, dropping 9.30 and 200-yard breaststroke in 2:24.46, dropping 8.36. He dropped a total of 26.22 seconds in three events.

Ricardo Roche, 22, won the 200-yard backstroke in 1:51.92.

Ana Villamil, 17, won the 200-yard breaststroke in 2:30.28. She also had a 4.25 drop in her 200 backstroke.

Maddie Smutny, 17, won the 100-yard freestyle in 53.87.

SOFLO Swimmers Shine In Session Two Of SOFLO Distance IMX/IMR TYR Challenge; Lumsden, Harran, Petkov Double Winners

PEMBROKE PINES, October 1, 2022–South Florida Aquatic Club swimmers got off to a good start in Session Two of the SOFLO Distance IMX/IMR TYR Challenge Saturday at Academic Village Pool.

Christie Ann Lumsden, 10, Laila Harran, 12, and Toma Petkov, 10, each won two events and had a total of four time drops.

Lumsden won the 10-and-under 200-yard individual medley in 2:41.93 and 200-yard freestyle in 2:17.81.

Harran won the 11-12 200-yard individual medley in a best time 2:21.10, dropping 5.88 and 500-yard freestyle in 5:34.23, another best time dropping 9.32.

Petkov won the 10-and-under 100-yard individual medley in a best time 1:19.81, dropping 0.06 and 100-yard freestyle in 1:10.36, dropping 0.31.

David Valdiviezo, 12, won the 500-yard freestyle in a best time 5:33.54, dropping 9.06 seconds from his previous best. Valdiviezo also had a 3.69 drop in the 200 IM.

Several other SOFLO swimmers had some impressive time drops: Grace Petrucci, 100 IM, 5.04 seconds; Valentina Remmele, 200 IM, 5.48 and 200 freestyle, 4.61; Amber Connor, 200 IM, 41.23; Sofia Rodriguez, 200 IM, 5.58; Stephania Dmitrova, 200 freestyle, 4.09; Mackenzie McPherson, 500 freestyle, 4.72; Jianna Amores, 500 freestyle, 19.47; Luis Escobar, 200 IM, 10.30; Leonardo Zuluaga, 200 IM, 4.71; Santiago Zuluaga, 100 freestyle, 20.39; Michael Barber, 200 freestyle, 5.31; Gabriel Ferrer, 200 freestyle, 5.44; Sean Tee, 200 freestyle, 5.40; and Guillermo Mantilla, 500 freestyle, 5.34.

SOFLO Girls Sweep Distance Event On Opening Day Of SOFLO Distance IMX/IMR TYR Challenge

PEMBROKE PINES, September 30, 2022–South Florida Aquatic Club swimmers dominated opening night action at the SOFLO Distance IMX/IMR TYR Challenge Friday at Academic Village Pool.

SOFLO girls swept the top three spots in the 1,650-yard freestyle.

Auburn University-commit Olivia Dinehart, 17, won the distance event in 17 minutes, 38.77 seconds. Teammates Maddy Smutny, 17, was second in 17:48.82 and Elena Dinehart, 17, was third in 17:59.96.

Juan Vallmitjana, 13, was SOFLO’s top boys’ finisher placing third in a best time 16:19.12, dropping 25.39 from his previous best of 16:44.51.

SOFLO teammate Felix Gonzalez, 15, was fourth in 16:47.64, also a best time dropping 3.02 seconds. His previous best was 16:50.66.

SOFLO Swimmers Head Talented Field For This Weekend’s SOFLO Distance IMX/IMR TYR Challenge

PEMBROKE PINES, September 29, 2022—South Florida Aquatic Club and other Florida Gold Coast swimmers will get a chance to see how they stack up against the rest of the nation’s age group swimmers this weekend at the SOFLO Distance IMX/IMR TYR Challenge at Academic Village Pool.

The three-day meet begins Friday at 5:30 p.m. with the girls and boys 1,650-yard freestyle events. Warm-up is 4:30 p.m.

It continues on Saturday with two sessions beginning at 8:30 a.m. and concludes on Sunday, again with two sessions starting at 8:30 a.m. Warm-up is 7:30 a.m.

Up-and-coming swimmers, ages 10-and-under, will compete in the IMR (Ready) Challenge. All sessions are timed finals. Events are 100 individual medley, 100 freestyle, 50 backstroke, 50 breaststroke and 50 butterfly.

The USA Swimming-sanctioned meet is a fun, motivational meet to help young swimmers reach the next level in their swimming careers.

The IMR Challenge allows swimmers to see how they compare to other swimmers around the nation in their age group. Swimmers must compete in all the events required for their age group to establish a score.

Once a swimmer competes in each IM Ready event at least once in an official meet, swimmers and parents can check their rankings on USA Swimming’s website.

The IMX (Xtreme) Challenge is the next step-up from the IMR competition. It includes a series of five events for 10-and-unders and 11-12 or six events for 13-and-over. Once swimmers complete the IMX program they can also see where their score ranks nationally, among their local LSC and own swim club.

IMX: 10-and-under events, 200 individual medley, 200 freestyle, 100 backstroke, 100 breaststroke, 100 butterfly.

IMX: 11-12, 200 individual medley, 500 freestyle, 100 backstroke, 100 breaststroke, 100 butterfly.

IMX: 13-and-over, 200 individual medley, 400 individual medley, 500 freestyle, 200 backstroke, 200 breaststroke, 200 butterfly.

The meet will be scored. Swimmers who complete all IMR events will receive an IMR score. Swimmers who complete all IMX will receive an IMX score. Swimmers who do not complete all required events will receive a score of zero.

Scoring for the various age groups will be based on the following points systems: 10-and-under Hytek Age Group Points; 11-14 Hytek Single Age Points; and 15-and-over Hytek Open Points.

Martin, Wilson, Gembicki, Vallmitjana Lead SOFLO On Day One Of Distance IMX/IMR TYR Challenge

PEMBROKE PINES, October 1, 2021–South Florida Aquatic Club swimmers got off to a good start Friday at the SOFLO Distance IMX/IMR TYR Challenge at Academic Village Pool.

SOFLO’s Gianna Martin, Izzy Wilson and Nat Gembicki won three of the girls’ four age groups in the opening 1,650-yard freestyle event.

Martin, 10, won the 10-and-under in 23:57.73. Wilson, 14, won the 13-14 in 18:12.68. Gembicki, 16, won the 15-and-over in 17:49.94.

SOFLO teammate Juan Vallmitjana, 12, was SOFLO’s lone boys’ winner in the 11-12 age group in a best time 17:24.44, dropping 40.27.

The 11-team, three-day meet continues on Saturday with two sessions at 8:30 a.m. and noon and concludes on Sunday, again with two sessions at 8:30 a.m. and 11:30 a.m.

SOFLO has 160 swimmers (89 boys and 71 girls) competing in 867 individual events.

Up-and-coming swimmers will compete in the IMR (Ready) Challenge. All sessions are timed finals.

PEMBROKE PINES, September 30, 2021–South Florida Aquatic Club swimmers will get a chance to see how they stack up against the rest of the nation’s age group swimmers this weekend at the SOFLO Distance IMX/IMR TYR Challenge at Academic Village Pool.

The 11-team, three-day meet begins Friday at 5:30 p.m. with the girls and boys 1,650-yard freestyle events.

It continues on Saturday with two sessions at 8:30 a.m. and noon and concludes on Sunday, again with two sessions at 8:30 a.m. and 11:30 a.m.

Up-and-coming swimmers will compete in the IMR (Ready) Challenge. All sessions are timed finals.

The USA Swimming-sanctioned meet is a fun, motivational meet to help young swimmers reach the next level in their swimming careers.

The IMR Challenge allows swimmers to see how they compare to other swimmers around the nation in their age group. Swimmers must compete in all the events required for their age group to establish a score.

Once a swimmer competes in each IM Ready event at least once in an official meet, swimmers and parents can check their rankings on USA Swimming’s website.

The IMX (Xtreme) Challenge is the next step-up from the IMR competition. It includes a series of five or six events. Once swimmers complete the IMX program they can also see where their score ranks nationally, among their local LSC and own swim club.

The meet will be scored. Swimmers who complete all IMR events will receive an IMR score. Swimmers who complete all IMX will receive an IMX score. Swimmers who do not complete all required events will receive a score of zero.

Scoring for the various age groups will be based on the following points systems: 10-and-under Hytek Age Group Points; 11-14 Hytek Single Age Points; and 15-and-over Hytek Open Points.

IMR, 10-and-under events, 100 individual medley, 100 freestyle, 50 backstroke, 50 breaststroke and 50 butterfly.

IMX: 10-and-under events, 200 individual medley, 200 freestyle, 100 backstroke, 100 breaststroke, 100 butterfly.

IMX: 11-12, 200 individual medley, 500 freestyle, 100 backstroke, 100 breaststroke, 100 butterfly.

IMX: 13-and-over, 200 individual medley, 400 individual medley, 500 freestyle, 200 backstroke, 200 breaststroke, 200 butterfly.

In addition to host SOFLO, other Florida Gold Coast teams competing are Gulliver Swim Club, Plantation Swim Team, SwimFast, Miami Country Day Aquatics, Ransom Everglades, Metro Aquatics, Boca Raton Swim Team, Southern Wahoos Aquatic Team, City of Miami Parks and PAQ.

SOFLO Girls, Boys Share Center Stage On Final Day Of SOFLO Distance IMX/IMR TYR Challenge

PEMBROKE PINES, September 29, 2019— South Florida Aquatic Club boys and girls swimmers took turns taking center stage on the third and final day of the SOFLO Distance IMX/IMR TYR Challenge at Academic Village Pool.

Olivia Dinehart won the 200-yard individual medley 2:11.42 and was second in the 500-yard freestyle in 5:06.75.

Grabbing second places in their events were Anastasia Lutz, Sarah Acevedo and Shelby Evans.

Rafael Rodriguez won the 200-yard butterfly in 1:54.29 and 200-yard individual medley in 1:56.40.

Ryan Harries won the 50-yard breaststroke in a best time 37.94.

Dominic Bono won the 500-yard freestyle in 4:47.97.

Philopatier Ibrahim took second places in the 200-yard butterfly and 200-yard individual medley.

In addition to host SOFLO, other teams that competed were City of Miami Parks, Hialeah Swim CLub, Midtown Weston, Pompano Beach Piranhas, St. Andrew’s and Shelton Doral.

SOFLO Boys Rule The Pool; Atkinson Tunes Up For ISL Debut At SOFLO Distance IMX/IMR TYR Challenge

PEMBROKE PINES, September 28, 2019—The South Florida Aquatic Club boys stole the show Saturday on the second day of the SOFLO Distance IMX/IMR TYR Challenge at Academic Village Pool.

Lance Lesage, Juan Vallmitjana, Juan Pablo Pineda and Rafael Rodriguez won their individual events.

Lesage, 16, won the 200-yard backstroke in 1:54.22. Lesage was one of five swimmers in the top six.

Vallmitjana , 10, won the 200-yard freestyle in a best time 2:14.43 with a drop of 4.86 seconds.

Pineda, 17, won the 200-yard breaststroke in 2:12.45.

Rodriguez, 17, won his second event of the meet in the 400-yard individual medley in 4:09.92.

SOFLO’s four-time Jamaican Olympian and short course world record holder Alia Atkinson, 30, competed in the 200-yard breaststroke as a tuneup race for her pro debut in a new swimming league. Atkinson won in 2:20.44.

The International Swimming League will open its inaugural season in October. The opener is Oct. 5-6 in Indianapolis. The league will take place in seven cities across the U.S. and Europe and culminate December 20-21 at a custom-built pool in the heart of Las Vegas.

Other dates and sites are Oct. 12-13 in Naples Italy, Oct.19-20 in Lewisville, Tex., Oct. 26-27 in Budapest, Hungary, Nov. 16-17 in College Park, Md. and Nov. 23-24 in London.

The league is attempting to make the sport more exciting and lucrative for swimmers.

Atkinson will swim for Team Iron along with Katinka Hosszu, Ranomi Kromowidjojo, Kira Toussaint, Vlad Morozov, Kristof Milak and Gunnar Bentz.

The three-day SOFLO meet concludes Sunday at 9 a.m.
