SOFLO’s Mallory Schleicher Wins Swim Miami Beach Open Water Mile

MIAMI BEACH, December 3, 2018—Mallory Schleicher of South Florida Aquatic Club won the second annual Swim Miami Beach Open Water Mile off North Beach Bandshell on Sunday.

After competing in the two-day SOFLO Holiday Classic, Schleicher, 15 won the overall women’s title in 16 minutes and 26 seconds.

Schleicher was eighth overall among a field of 174 men and women swimmers and also won her 15-16 age group. Schleicher is one of the Florida Gold Coast’s top open water swimmers.

At the SOFLO Holiday Classic, she was second in the 50- and 100-yard freestyle events and 100-yard backstroke and third in the 100-yard butterfly, all with time drops.

Gina Grant, 20, of Pembroke Pines and SOFLO was second overall among women and second in her age group in 26:08 in the Special Olympics Open Water Mile Swim.

Two other SOFLO swimmers competed in the mile swim. Leonardo Mateus, 16, was sixth overall in 15:47 and Alejandro Mateus, 13, was tenth overall in 16:39. Both won their age groups.

Canadian David Pouliot won the men’s overall title in 14:24 among 123 men and his 19-24 age group title.

ELSEWHERE

Olympian and former Florida Atlantic swimmer Manny Huerta won the 30-34 age group title Sunday at the Ironman South American Championship in Mar del Plata, Argentina. He finished in 8 hours, 29 minutes and 47 seconds. He was 15th among 728 male triathletes and 18th overall among a field of 834. He qualified in his age group for the Kona Ironman World Championship representing Puerto Rico. Michaeil Weiss of Austria won in 7:30:23. Aussie Sarah Crowley won the women’s title in 8:20.17.

SOFLO Swimmers Kick Off Holiday Season At SOFLO Holiday Classic

PEMBROKE PINES, December 2, 2018—After two days of mostly prelim swims, South Florida Aquatic Club swimmers rose to the occasion in the finals of the SOFLO Holiday Classic Saturday at Academic Village Pool.

Other than the 500-yard freestyle and 400-yard individual medley events, the first two days of the unique formatted meet featured prelims.

On Saturday night, SOFLO swimmers saved their best for last. Among some of SOFLO’s top finishers with time drops were:

There were swimmers who may not have finished in the top three, but had impressive time drops.

Rafael Frable, 11, dropped 23.62 seconds off his 200-yard breaststroke to place second in 3:15.02. He also shaved 4.02 seconds off his 100-yard backstroke to place ninth in 1:46.18.

Logan Gonzalez, 13, dropped 14.45 seconds off his 500-yard freestyle to finish ninth in 5:28.71. His previous best was 5:43.16.

Sarah Bedoya, 11, dropped 6.48 off her 100-yard backstroke to place sixth in a best time 1:28.87 and 5.08 off her 50-yard freestyle to finish in 33.26.

Adam Stewart, 10, dropped 6.18 seconds off his 100-yard breaststroke to finish third in 1:38.23 and 6.41 off his 100-yard freestyle to finish second in 1:25.15.

Olivia Ware, 15, dropped 5.65 off her 200-yard breaststroke in a best time 3:05.18 to place fifth.

Sophia Bedoya, 16, dropped 5.52 off her 100-yard freestyle to place seventh in 1:00.98

Samuel Bullen, 13, dropped 5.51 off his 200-yard breaststroke to place third in 2:31.76.

Alessio Mazzi, 12, dropped 5.33 off his 200-yard individual medley to place second in 2:59.25.

Lucas Porven, 13, dropped 4.23 off his 100-yard butterfly to finish fifth in 1:06.01.

Mariann Catalasan, 12, dropped 4.10 seconds off her 200-yard freestyle to finish third in 2:17.84.

The holiday season continues for SOFLO swimmers with the Dec. 5-8 Speedo Winter Junior Nationals, Dec. 11-16 FINA Short Course World Championship and Dec. 13-16 Speedo Winter Championships.

SOFLO Swimmers Dominate Day One Prelims Of SOFLO Holiday Classic; Paige Lane, Nicolas Rossi Post Impressive Time Drops

PEMBROKE PINES, November 30, 2018–South Florida Aquatic Club dominated opening night prelim action at the SOFLO Holiday Classic Friday at Academic Village Pool.

SOFLO swept the top three places in four individual events. The girls swept the 200-yard butterfly and 200-yard backstroke events. The boys swept the 50-yard freestyle and 200-yard backstroke.

In the girls’ 200-yard butterfly, Alia Atkinson was top finisher in prelims in 2:05.32 just edging SOFLO teammate Paige Lane, seeded fifth in 2:11.76 who was second in a best time 2:05.41 after dropping an impressive 6.35 seconds. Kathleen Golding was third in 2:07.60.

Atkinson, 29, fine tuning for the upcoming FINA World Short Course Championships, also was top finisher in the 100-yard breaststroke in 1:05.36.

Molly Golding was top finisher in the 200-yard backstroke in a best time 2:14.71, dropping 2.21 followed by Jena Legaspi in 2:20.05 and JennaMarie Brames in 2:20.79.

Robert Wilson was top finisher inthe 50-yard freestyle in 22.28 followed by teammates Rafael Rodriguez in 22.67 and Juan Pablo Pineda in a best time 22.78.

Lance Lesage was top finisher in the 200-yard backstroke in a best time 1:52.56, dropping 1.09 seconds. Nicolas Rossi was second in 2:06.28, also a best time, dropping an impressive 8.86 seconds and Leonardo Mateus was third in 2:07.72.

Several swimmers were coming off outstanding high school seasons.

The meet continues Saturday with two sessions, prelims at 8:30 a.m. and finals at 5 p.m.

SOFLO Heads Field For Holiday Classic This Weekend

PEMBROKE PINES, November 28, 2018–Let the holidays begin with the SOFLO Holiday Classic Friday and Saturday at Academic Village Pool.

There will be fun, merriment and good racing during the two-day Florida Gold Coast meet.

SOFLO heads the field with 158 swimmers (79 girls and 79 boys) competing in 910 individual events.

Among other FGC teams competing are Flying Fish, Heritage Aquatics, Boca Raton, TS Aquatics, Miami Swimming, Plantation Swim Team, North Palm Beach and City of Miami Swim Team.

The field has attracted a variety of swimmers from Olympians and high school swimmers to top age group swimmers.

Four-time Jamaican Olympian Alia Atkinson is fine tuning for the 2018 FINA World Short Course Championships. She will swim the 200-yard butterfly (1:57.71) and 100-yard breaststroke (57.29).

Atkinson is coming off the FINA World Cup Series meet in Singapore. She has won eight gold medals during this year’s series. Atkinson still holds the short course world record in the 50-meter breaststroke. The 14th World Championships are Dec. 11-16 in Hangzhou, China. Atkinson will be joined by SOFLO head coach Chris Anderson and two other Jamaican swimmers.

SOFLO dominates the top seeds. Among them are:
